Thoughts on a Patient-Specific Mandibular Plate Design Project

Hi everyone!

I'm a final-year Biomedical Engineering student specializing in Biomechanics and Biomaterials.

For my mini-project, my idea is to select a specific patient case involving a mandibular fracture or defect, use the available CT scan data to reconstruct a 3D model of the mandible, and design a patient-specific plate using CAD software.

I then plan to analyze the plate's stress distribution and deformation using FEA, potentially in ANSYS, and explore whether the design can be improved based on the results. I also have access to a 3D printer, so building a physical prototype may be possible.

I'm also considering comparing different plate materials, such as titanium and stainless steel, to evaluate their mechanical performance.

I'd appreciate your honest opinions:

Is this a valuable and feasible mini-project?

If you were on the evaluation committee, what would you criticize?

How could I make it more than just plate design and FEA?

Would you pursue this idea or explore something else?

Any advice or recommended resources would be greatly appreciated

Thank you:)šŸ’•

Anyone get into a good Biomedical Engineering Master’s/PhD program with a low GPA?

Hey! I’m in my final year of Nanotechnology Engineering at the University of Waterloo, specializing in Nanobiosystems. I’m looking into Master’s and PhD programs in biomedical engineering/bioengineering in Canada and the US.

My biggest concern is my GPA, which is currently 75%. I’m hoping to bring it up before graduation, but I do have quite a bit of research experience:

5 internships in biomedical engineering R&D
2 research papers I’m coauthoring (neither published yet)
Additional research experience in tissue engineering and biomaterials
A capstone project involving hydrogel microneedles for diagnosing specific sorts of skin cancer which received quite a bit of grant funding

I’m interested in applying to some top universities but don’t know how much my research experience can make up for my GPA :(

For those who went to grad school in these fields, where did you go, what was your GPA and how much research experience did you have? Would you recommend doing a Master’s first or applying directly for a PhD?

TBiomedical Engineering Graduate in Dubai — Desperately Looking for One Opportunity to Start My Career

Hello everyone,

I’m writing this post because, honestly, I’m trying my best to find a way into the biomedical engineering field, and I could really use some help.

I’m a Biomedical Engineering graduate currently living in Dubai, UAE. I hold a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Biomedical Engineering and have internship experience supporting medical equipment installation, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality assurance.

Despite my education and efforts, I’m still struggling to get my first real opportunity in the UAE biomedical engineering field. I’m currently working in a different industry, but my goal has always been to build a career in biomedical engineering and work with medical equipment in a hospital or healthcare environment.

I’m not expecting a high salary or a senior position. I just want one genuine opportunity to prove myself. I’m willing to start as a Junior Biomedical Engineer, Biomedical Equipment Technician trainee, Service Engineer trainee, or in any suitable entry-level role where I can learn from experienced engineers and develop my skills.

If anyone here works in a hospital, medical equipment company, healthcare group, or biomedical engineering department — or knows someone who might be able to guide me — I would be genuinely grateful for any advice, referral, contact, or opportunity.

Even if you cannot offer a job, pointing me in the right direction would mean a lot to me.

I know many people are struggling to find opportunities, and I don’t expect anything to come easily. I’m simply asking for a chance to show what I can do.

I can share my CV with anyone who is willing to help.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I sincerely hope someone can help me take this first step toward the career I worked hard to pursue.

Are engineered bacterial therapies actually going to survive real world clinical translation or will safety bottlenecks stop them outside the lab

Is a Godzilla-sized (100m) creature possible with bioengineering?

I know that the square-cube law normally prevents such a creature from existing, and a 100m tall creature would have several problems such as heat regulation, sustaining its own weight, blood circulation etc etc… However, assuming complete mastery over genetic and bioengineering, and perfect conditions, could such a creature be made eventually? Whether it’s on earth, or another planet with a completely different environment, it doesn’t matter. I’m curious on the limits of animal sizes with absolute creativity, as long as it’s hypothetically possible.

Student in Need of an Interview of Experience (College or Professional)

Hi r/bioengineering!
I'm a high school student with an assignment to get an interview with someone in the field I'm interested in going into (which is biomedical engineering). If anyone would like to step out and have a quick call for 10-15 minutes regarding your professional experience and future development in biomedical engineering, that would be great.

I'll make sure the call stays as convenient as possible for you.

should i pursue bio engineering?

im in 10th right now and struggling to see a clear career path for me. i genuinely love math and i suppose im good at biology and my mother is recommending bio engineering as a possible career path for me as she says its going to be in demand in the future.

i figured i'd ask some of my queries regarding the field here

do i have to have computer as an elective subject/ know coding to pursue this?

what exactly do bioengineers do in their jobs daily? i have a basic idea about what it is but i'd like to know what a normal day with that job looks like.

how well does it pay? does it have an average opening salary? is this job in demand right now? is it highly competitive?

do i need to have good memorization skills?

what advice would you give me if i want to pursue this field?

Title: Should I switch from CSE Core to Biotechnology?

I'm currently pursuing BTech CSE Core and am a partial dropper preparing for entrance exams. I'm considering switching to Biotechnology.

I want honest advice on:

  1. What are the job opportunities and starting salaries after BTech Biotechnology in India?

  2. Is a master's degree necessary for good career growth?

  3. How does Biotechnology compare with CSE in placements and long-term prospects?

  4. Can I manage Biotechnology while preparing for entrance exams?

  5. Would you recommend switching from CSE to Biotechnology? Why or why not?

I'd especially appreciate advice from Biotechnology graduates and professionals based on their actual experiences.

Bioeng question for insect foods

Hello. I apologize if this question is not appropriate for this sub. I'm not sure where to find this sub's rules, but I hope this post will be well received.

I need some help brainstorming some ideas for adding vitamins and other important minerals to the diets of insects, especially ants. The medium I am using are gel cups (think beetle jelly, or jell-o shots, lol) made with agar, sugar, honey, and water. I would very much like to add some vitamins and/or minerals or other helpful supplements to the mix. In particular, I'd like to add something that they may be deficient in while being kept in captivity, if such a thing exists.

Basically my question is two-fold: can you help me identify what kind of supplements would be beneficial to insects in captivity, and can you help me figure out where to obtain said supplements (and how to add it to my jell-o pods if they are solid or what not).

Please note that I am not interested in adding protein or antibiotics to this mixture.

Sorry for the strange question.

Medical laser equipment

Dear bioengineers of Reddit,

This is definitely a long shot, but is there a meaningful difference between American/European and Chinese medical laser equipment in terms of engineering, function, and clinical effectiveness?

I’m particularly interested in whether the more expensive European/US machines actually deliver better or more consistent laser output, beam quality, pulse characteristics, cooling, etc., or whether a well-made Chinese device can perform similarly despite the much lower price.

I’d really appreciate an engineer’s perspective on this.

What keywords actually show up in job postings?

A recent analysis ofĀ 3,518 job postings from 81 companies across seven rolesĀ found some interesting patterns.

In several categories, generic terms appeared more often than the big-name tools.Ā ā€œObservabilityā€ showed up more than ā€œGrafana,ā€ while ā€œSIEMā€ appeared more than ā€œSplunk.ā€

That raises an interesting question: are resumes too focused on listing specific tools and not enough on the broader skills and terminology employers use?

The study breaks down the results by role, including software engineering, cybersecurity, DevOps, marketing, product, accounting and sales.

The full dataset, methodology and findings are here:
