Software Engineer Debating Transition

Good afternoon!

I am a backend software engineer in the health sector, and frankly have been feeling a lot of burn out with the sector I am in. I love programming, but health just hasn't been doing it for me lately.

My biggest regret has always been not going for an actual engineering degree, and have always looked wistfully at the AEC industry.

I am debating transitioning sectors, and my fiancé who has been working in AEC for the good part of the last decade is encouraging me to look into BIM SWE.

From some preliminary research, I have been able to isolate some things I definitely need to learn much more about before even attempting to look into BIM (Revit, AutoCAD), but I am curious about how that transition may even look to begin with.

I would love some feedback perhaps from folks with similar backgrounds as mine (SWE's swapping industries, any regrets? etc.), or what the general knowledge/expertise required to break into this field is, and what the word about the current and future market is.

Some quick and dirty details:

  • I live right outside of a major metropolitan area that is renowned for it's AEC.
  • I have 3 years experience working in enterprise backend development, previously I did 4 years of statistical programming.
  • I have a B.S. in Comp Sci.

Thank you for reading my wall of text!

Asking for feedback. Free BIM automations, no expensive CAD required

I built something and I need people to try it and tell me honestly what they think.

Free automations that creates IFC/IM models from simple geometry & attribute data. You don’t need a CAD license or a lot of BIM experience.

Getting an AI to read AutoCAD drawings

My company funded three accounts for me for one month, each worth 200€ (two for Claude and one for ChatGPT), for a project to develop an AI capable of reading construction drawings in AutoCAD and creating the industrialized products we sell (MEP racks)

The result isn’t bad—it works—but I need to make the process more efficient. I think that with the information it has, it could already produce the entire product, but the problem lies in the workflow. The truth is, I’m an amateur with a lot of ambition (and laziness). Maybe you have some tips that could help me?

Pyrevit

for those of you using pyrevit to connect Claude to your revit using mcp, are you getting permission from your bosses or org to use it? I’m not sure who to reach out in my org in regard to data privacy. Or are you all buying your own api Claude keys? I’ve heard a lot of comments from people using this in their firms but idk anyone in mine who’s doing this and not sure if I’ll be penalized to do that if I allow Claude to read the revit models

would really appreciate any insight on this

Data Centre BIMWorkflow

Hi All,

I am starting a new position as BIM Coordinator on data center project. I have been working on infrastructure and industrial projects throughout my career as BIM Coordinator. If anyone is working on data centre, I was wondering if there are other project specific BIM/VDC workflows besides or in addition to model coordination, clash detection, scan to BIM, 4D sequencing and etc.

I built a free in-browser 3D IFC viewer: Framboise

Structural draftsman here (20+ years in reinforced concrete). I built Framboise, a free online 3D IFC viewer that lets you open IFC models directly in your browser, with nothing to install. I'd love feedback from BIM folks: what's missing, what breaks? https://scherer-be.fr

Claude/Revit

So I connected Claude to Revit 2026 today via the PyRevit MCP server…Just started with a scan of an existing floor plan and tested whether it could create it…I’m really blown away by the results. It took what would have probably taken me over a day to create and did it in just a little over an hour…

Were there mistakes? Sure, but it gave me a really good start.

Who else has tested this? What have you been able to do? What ideas do you have for using it? Sounds silly, but it has made me excited to get back to work tomorrow…

Interior Wall Modelling Practice

Hello everyone,

Ive got a project, mid rise residential, with multiple apartment types.

So I tried to model my interior wall finishes by using the "place by room", "auto join" option, but then i see that i get these wall join issues and i tried a few tips here and there and nothing worked and it seems like this method is a bad practice in general for this kind of project.

What would you think is the best practice to model these interior wall finishes given that the project contains multiple finish types and sometimes these finishes have varying heights.

Thanks everyone in advance

How do you handle last-minute design changes when BIM coordination is almost complete?

When a design change arrives late in coordination, updating the model is only part of the work. There’s also figuring out which resolved clashes need to be reopened, what other disciplines need to check, and whether issued drawings are affected.

How does your team manage that without repeating the entire coordination cycle?

Do you review the affected areas first, or rerun the full clash tests? Who decides how much rechecking is needed, especially when the deadline hasn’t moved?

Also curious how you document the impact on time and scope. What looks like a small change in one model can create a fair amount of work elsewhere.

Would like to hear what has worked for your team, particularly when the change comes after an area has already been signed off.

Free MIDP generator (ISO 19650 naming, RIBA/AIA/HOAI stages) – looking for feedback

First post here. Every project I've worked on started the same way: open last project's MIDP, delete half of it, rename everything to the new code and hope nothing breaks. On my last job that took me two days and we still ended up with duplicated sheet numbers.

So I built a free tool that does that first draft: kalma.build/midp-generator

Pick building type, disciplines, stages (RIBA, AIA, HOAI or your own) and naming (ISO 19650 or custom), and you get an Excel with the deliverable list, codes already built, grouped by discipline. No account, it just asks for an email to send the file.

It won't be perfect, you'll still edit it. It just skips the blank page.

Full disclosure: it's part of Kalma, a tool I am building to track MIDP/TIDPs during the project (with ACC links). The generator works on its own though. Will be glad to grant early access if it soung useful for you.

Two questions:
- What's missing for your discipline?
- How do you manage your MIDP today?

Can someone be a BIM coordinator….

If they don’t have the degree in the industry? My brother is looking to switch into the AEC industry in the Midwest, and he currently has a degree in something completely unrelated. How would he begin to do this? I’m in the MEP industry so I feel like I can potentially help him land a role but he first needs to know how to do it. Can anyone advise?

Does anyone here use Blender Bonsai BIM?

Revit isn't an option for me, and I recently discovered this extension. I'm starting from scratch and I'm curious about its capabilities. I know it's good for 3D models and renders, but what I'm most interested in is creating many plans for large projects, does anyone use it for that? And how did you learn to use it?

Stop AI posting please

We are seeing a glut of AI bot account posting about some revit clone they vibe coded in a week. None of the software is good or viable and all the accounts are brand new. Can we stop allowing posting from these brand new accounts that aren’t contributing?

Getting into BIM

I’m looking into getting into BIM as I’ve just started as a part 1 architectural assistant, and realise how important and beneficial it’ll be to broaden my skillset early on, and to be honest the whole technical side seems far more interesting to me.

Just looking for any advice on how to get into it early on, any good/ cheap beginner courses or ways to get a cheapish or free revit license to practice, I used revit for about 4 years for modelling but never used it to its full ability, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Where can I find real-world drawings or sample projects to practice my BIM skills?

Hi everyone!
I’m looking to improve my BIM skills, especially in Revit. Does anyone know where I can find sample architectural, structural, or MEP drawings to practice modeling?
I’d love to work on some real-world projects, starting from 2D drawings and turning them into BIM models.
Any free resources, sample projects, or recommendations would be really appreciated. Thanks!
