8-Ball This is how I rack

Solid top, mixed corners, solids make that backwards J shape. I don’t know why I do this. Maybe seems most mixed, maybe saw it somewhere.

You?

8-Ball Made this insane 8 ball to win a semi final in a tournament. I called it as well!

Long time lurker here sharing one of my sickest shots till date. A kick bank 8 ball pot.

Can I repeat it? Probably not. But I'm glad my thinking paid off. Was gonna call it on the side pocket as I have seen those go in. But I played the odds.

Location: Pool Lab, Toronto.

Cue: For those who are just starting out, this is a $100 dufferin cue.

8-Ball Let me see your poolhall

I added a picture of my little alabama poolhall/bar. I work and play here almost everyday. Up front we have darts and Golden tee, but I figured for the sake of the sub I'd just show the battlefield. Haha.

We have Sundays 9 ball APA, Mondays 8 ball APA and a cash league Wednesdays 8 ball. Free pool on Saturdays. We host our areas Tricups and Win it, in it for Vegas as well.

8-Ball You know what’s the best part about having a girlfriend who loves to play pool? You get to tell her to break the next rack after you sneak the engagement ring onto the shaft of her break cue.

8-Ball Hustling obsolete?

I have played pool for many years and have seen many hustlers and many money games. A friend of mine who is a bit younger says that because of YouTube it's impossible to hustle anymore. I don't believe this is true because even though you know you're being hustled many times you think you're better and you will keep playing. I admit it might be a bit harder to walk into a strange pool hall and stay hustling because people might know you from YouTube, but there will always be those low-key low profile players who no one knows. And as in the past way before the Internet once a new guy walks into a pool hall the regulars would have already known he isn't from There. I don't think the Internet and YouTube has hurt the hustler.

8-Ball What do you do?

Post image

Girlfriend said she saw this shot in a video and it said what to do, but no matter what she does she either messes up shape or misses the shot.

How do you play this?

EDIT:

For more detail. cue ball and 1 ball are on the foot rail. 8 ball is on the long rail. All balls are frozen.

You are playing 8 ball with these being only balls left on table, you are solids. How do you shoot the 1 and get shape on the 8 ball?

8-Ball Novice player with beginner question on racking.

Post image

So, I have been trying to learn more and more about 8 ball and get better at my understanding of rules, and racking. For some reason I did think like color was supposed to be paired up but then I saw this racked on a pool table.

Is there specific rules to racking in 8 ball? Is this acceptable because for my organized brain it makes sense to me.

8-Ball Why do people actually call a safety out loud?

Genuinely curious question here:

I play a lot of pool, but one thing that still confuses me is before a shot when a player will audibly announce "no call", or "safety". I just don't understand why that matters at all. Obviously in specific games, specific shots must be called (called shot, 10 ball, etc.). But when you're not calling a ball in a pocket, why does it matter to announce a no call?

As long as it is a legal shot (good contact and rail afterwards), what's the point of audibly announcing a no call?

8-Ball For 40 years I have been racking this way and found out today it was wrong.

Post image

Shooting pool earlier and racked like this, was told it was wrong and that a stripe should be in one of the back corner spots. Laughed it off, finished the game and looked it up to see that I was indeed wrong.

My question is, was it ever okay to rack like this? I do not shoot in a league or anything but shoot often enough at bars and with other people that I thought I’d have seen or been corrected by now.

8-Ball Does breaking your cue mid-game automatically result in losing?

Post image

Played in a casual tournament at a local bar. Most players are very casual players (like me) that use the house cues and don’t play competitively anywhere. But the guy that runs it is very on top of reffing the matches and making sure you play by the rules.

In the semi-final game, player A left player B a relatively easy shot on the 8 to win. Player A proceeds to break his cue. Not to put it away, but just unscrewed it, then screwed it back in, sort of like he was just fidgeting with it, probably because he was pissed off/anxious that he was about to lose.

Ref clocks it right away and says Player A loses. Proceeds to say that it is a rule that if a player breaks his cue that it is a loss, as it means you are conceding the match to your opponent. Player A freaks out and says that wasn’t his intention therefore it shouldn’t count, Ref says he should have known better (Player A seemed to be a seasoned player, not a total casual). Things got heated, they argued pretty intensely.

Player B says it’s fine/they can continue. It was a pretty high percentage shot, and if he wins it would put a rest to this argument, because then the cue break technicality wouldn’t have mattered anyways. But what do you know, Player B misses! And then Player A goes on to win.

Player A plays the ref in the finals (the ref was a player/organizer/ref for the tourney) and Player A goes on to win. The Ref was pissed and pretty salty after.

What do you think? Is this a firm technicality that results in a loss? Similar to not calling the 8 on your last shot?

Or is it a soft rule that only depends on the players intentions when they broke their cue? And/or shouldn’t be enforced in a casual bar tournament?

8-Ball Are Mezz the best production wooden cues out there?

My 1 year old $900 Pechauer cue is badly warped. I'm going to return it since it has a lifetime warrantee. Maybe I got unlucky with it. Looking for another one around the $800-$1500 range. How does Schon compare to Mezz?

I like my '80s Huebler that I bought from an old dude I know for $500. Actually it plays better than the Pechauer. It's almost perfectly straight but has a really tiny bend.
