Shalini Ramachandran and Betsy McKay (Wall Street Journal reporters who wrote the award-winning Overmedicated America series last year) are working on a book which will examine the making of America's pill-first culture for anxiety and depression. They are looking to talk to people who have experiences to share about benzodiazepines or antidepressants, including those who have had more than one generation of their families on Xanax, Prozac and the like. Part of their research will focus on drug companies, regulators and the medical system, and they are also seeking to talk to clinicians, researchers, government/regulatory officials, and current or former pharmaceutical company executives/workers.
If you'd like to share your story, please fill out this Google form, and they will reach out to contact you.
Note: I had a phone call with Shalini before agreeing to post their request and it’s clear they’re allies working on material that could bring benzos into public discussion in a significant way. Their intent is to make a systemic impact - and personally, I’m pretty excited to see what they produce in the end.

I’m happy to say I’ve reached another recovery benchmark: 5 years off benzos!
Peer recovery communities (especially this one) have played a huge role in my successful healing from years of benzo use and I wanna enable my people to celebrate with something more practically useful than good vibes or words of gratitude - so I’m offering the gifts of knowledge, strategy, and a bunch of tools to promote recovery, empowerment, and personal growth in the form of the book I wrote last year: Life Beyond Benzos: A Strategy Guide for Navigating Withdrawal and Thriving in Recovery”. As of now the full book is available for free as a downloadable pdf to anyone who wants a copy of it - just follow the link above, scroll to the bottom of the page, and hit the “download” button.
Just to give you a sense of what it contains:
- The short preface is my own recovery story.
- Intro part-1 explains the role of the amygdala (the brain’s survival and fear center) in relation benzos, introducing Amy (the withdrawal hijacked amygdala) and the various kinds of psychological tactics Amy uses to get you to stay on (or go back to) benzos - and with it are methods you can employ to reduce Amy’s control of you.
- Intro part-2 broadens the focus beyond Amy, offering an overview of the strategies covered in the book and providing a ton of guidance for maximizing the benefits you can gain from it.
- The majority of the book is comprised of 15 evidence-based strategies that address critical aspects of the process which can make or break your recovery experience. It includes strategies related to taking ownership of recovery, radical acceptance, mindfulness, embracing grief, developing sustainable support systems, managing expectations, self-compassion, self-advocacy, finding meaning in suffering, and more. Each strategy involves an intro to the concept, an explanation of the strategy’s relevance in relation to benzo recovery and of its applicability as a tool for disarming Amy, an overview of the ways it can serve you in life after the healing is done, and a ton of different techniques you can use to put the strategy into practice (along with basic step-by-step instructions to give you a taste of it then and there).
I recognize that we’re all different and one size never fits all in benzo recovery, so I tried to ensure that there’s something for everyone in each strategy presented. I suspect you’ll find something that works for you and I really hope it helps you on the journey. Please feel free share it with anyone that you think would benefit from this kind of resource - and if they’re recovering from benzos, you can be sure aspects of it will very much apply.
Thanks for helping me to celebrate 5 years of healing and for showing up to support one another - none of us should have to do this alone.

I tried to do a 6 week taper in the psyche ward. In my country rehab and detox clinics are linked with the health system so I was on the road to going to rehab and eventually a 9 month aftercare program
I was detoxing from opiates using Suboxone also.
How fuckin stupid I was to think that psyche ward doctors know anything about addiction.
I have left the psyche ward because it was so unimaginably bad. I've been stuck in fight or flight and completely disassociated for nearly 2 weeks.
Whenever I tried to explain to the nurses how bad it is they brushed it off. I honestly lost my fucking mind and looked like I belonged in a psyche ward , I was afraid I was going to go completely psychotic, I didn't but I was on the tipping point due to the derealization making everything terrifying and being extremely paranoid. A level of paranoia I've never felt.
Now my rehab and recovery is all gone because I left. The doctor was an emotionless robotic bastard, he didn't give a fucking when I told him to slow it down
I have been addicted to benzos on and off for 10 years. Mostly RC benzos. So you can imagine how high my tolerance is.
I did go to rehab in 2023. This episode of disassociation and fight or flight this extreme didn't happen. However it did happen a few weeks after I left which caused me to relapse, which is extremely puzzling and the reason I'm so confused.
I remember when it happened I was home from rehab, and this disassociation followed by fight or flight happened after I used a computer screen for a few weeks.
It happens the same way every time. I get these severe migraines which happen at night after a day of screens, and then I wake up the next day disassociated and frightened because of it, the migraine cripples me for 3-4 days and my body is stuck in a fight or flight state. And then I'm extremely sensitive to visual and sound..
The difference was that in rehab I didn't have a phone or computer. Only television for a few hours a day, although I was mindful not to watch TV for too long while I was there because I was afraid these migraines would happen. They leave me in a state of constant sensory overload and fight or flight for I dont know how long, I've never waited it out long enough because it's so unbearable and basically cripples me from doing anything.
I was detoxed in 6 weeks with librium, after my last relapse which was 3 years of RC benzos like flubromazepam
I relapsed today. I have to visit with the mental health team Monday after my discharge. There going to urine test. Their going to find benzos
It has been the worst 8 days of my life. A lot of shit happened in the psyche ward that contributed to me leaving and will be another trauma that I can add to the long list. Along with my relapse today.
150mg librium detox in 6 weeks. Now because I left, they gave me a 6 day script for Suboxone that decreasea by 2mg every 2 days. So after this runs out I'm off Suboxone
I've been genuinely suicidal. I've never been so humiliated with all the shit that has happened in the last 3 days alone. With the derealization it literally feels like I've been living in a nightmare
And now it's probably going to rebound and be even worse. I don't think never going to be clean until I die

Hello all,
I spent the last few years abusing street bars alongside alcohol cocaine and other drugs. The past year or so I probably averaged around 2-4mg daily with frequent binges up to 20mg, all the while drinking anywhere from 6-24 drinks daily. Starting at the beginning of September I started seriously trying to taper, lowering my daily dose every few days pretty consistently and avoiding alcohol. For the past two weeks, my daily dose has been less than 0.5mg, with the last few days being less than 0.25mg. I take a tiny crumble of a pill at like 10am and another one around 10pm.
Withdrawals weren’t necessarily that bad besides depression/sadness, worst physical symptoms I got were slight muscle twitches. I stopped all other drugs except smoking tons of weed, occasionally drinking (a few beers once a week instead of 12+ daily), and taking 50mg Benadryl most nights for sleep.
Happy with my progress and that i was able to avoid seizures and extreme withdrawal but I want to fully jump off. I only have like 3mg left and it is starting to get difficult to partition the doses any smaller as I’m down to a fraction of a quarter bar. Thank you

I've been pretty much sedentary and am now deconditioned. I can't even go out for walks since I started this valium taper and I constantly worry about my blood pressure being "weird".

I’ve been (basically) benzo free since about May now and I recall from the last time I gave them up that I would think about bashing a Xanax multiple times a day and now is still the same. I’ve whacked every drug under the sun except crack and nothing else has ever had this same effect. Just wondering how many of yous feel the same way and how long for?

Context: Currently 6 weeks out from CT after 5 months of 10-20mg diazepam per day.
I've heard alot about this supplement over the years, it's basically green tea extract and it's supposed to help with anxiety. But I've always been skeptical because surely they can't do anything, or at least nothing compared to benzos...so I thought before yesterday happened!
My l theanine arrived in the mail and I popped a 400mg capsule thinking nothing of it, then started watching a TV show to get my mind of stuff. But after about half an hour I suddenly realised that something felt... very different. The ringing in my ears had dissipated, my mind wasn't stuck in a paranoid loop anymore and I wasn't depressed in the slightest -- I felt NORMAL!!
I quickly left my room and started walking outside with some music because I honestly didn't believe it and wanted to make certain, and HOLY CRAP it genuinely felt like I was on cloud 9! After a wave that lasted a fucking week straight with some of the worst depression I've ever felt it was completely gone just like that, flick of a switch basically .
I was astounded as I looked around and saw how beautiful everything was all of a sudden, colours were popping and I was actually listening to the music and FEELING it. Just 2 hours ago everything looked and felt so so grey I had honestly forgotten what normal felt like, then the clouds parted in the sky and everything was brilliant again I almost cried 🥲.
I genuinely could not believe this shit it was almost like I was on an LSD comeup or a manic episode 😂. But nope I was dead sober, I just felt incredible because a window had opened up thanks to the L-theanine!! This is the first time I've ever experienced a true "window" I think and I was honestly skeptical about it before but now I am a true believer, I was just stunned at how this was even possible lol.
I was even able to smoke weed without my DP/DR flaring up or anything it was just a chill weed high that I used to get, I was experiencing actual EUPHORIA for the first time in literally 2 months I think. I even took it today with some caffeine and experienced NO JITTERS or nothing, just clean focused energy.
Safe to say that this stuff is actually amazing and even better than magnesium glyscinate somehow. I don't know if it gave me the window or if it was the catalyst but I am not complaining! If you haven't given L-theanine a shot yet then please do so IMMEDIATELY because I had 0 hope at all.

Hi all
I was taking 20mg of tranxene ( a long acting benzo) for two weeks , I quitted cold turkey ( I couldn't taper ) and got withdrawals like insomnia , anxiety I am just wondering how much they will last and should I start tapering now ( withdrawals started 9 days ago )
Thank you

I completed my taper (two months duration after 14 years of use at 1 to .5mg daily) and have been off Klonopin for about a month and a half.
I have been experiencing the common withdrawal symptoms (insomnia, dizziness, agoraphobia, panic, intense ever present anxiety).
I have used all of my FMLA time available and am running to the end of my Short Term Disability period. I originally thought this was POTS syndrome but only recently realized how much the benzo had been contributing to my daily misery. Hence the taper.
I have filed for an extension of my STD benefits and am starting to look at Long term disability. I have documentation from my primary doctor submitted and am working on documenting from psychology and psychiatry which I will submit as soon as it’s ready.
I submitted ADA accommodations to do a graduated return to the office and it was denied by my managers. I am required to work in the office full time. I am a graphic designer.
I am supposed to “check back in” with HR before Nov. 2nd. I am terrified to do this!!! I feel like I am going to lose my job of 23 years over this. I don’t know how to handle this.
I have a good relationship with my managers but I can’t be sure if they are losing patience with me. This is mainly what scares me. I need advice on communication with my workplace. They don’t know that I am going through a withdrawal phase explicitly. I have given them only symptoms and recovery plans from my doctors.
I feel like I should just be honest with my managers as they truly are caring people that I honestly love working for and explain to them what is going on so they don’t fill in the blanks with “he looks just fine, there doesn’t seem to be a problem “. As we all know this is invisible to them unless you tell them.
I’m sorry this post is long but I am really in need of help! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. 💕💕💕
Edit: Fixed typos.

I had to recently start taking gabapentin again in month 8 post benzo jump, for some reason I was slowly getting better and issues were getting easier and symptoms less intense and all the sudden out of the blue my already existing restless leg symptoms went through the roof, I was having mood swings, confusion etc, it like month 1 all over again.
I was getting and hour or two of sleep a night no matter what I took, melatonin, iron, magnesium, etc. nothing made a dent in it and I would keep moving all night to the point of exhaustion and get an hour of sleep or so and have to get up for work again. I was going insane.
I started taking 300mg of gabapentin again and I’m now getting 7 or so hours of sleep a night again. But the last time I took this dose for a month I stopped it cold turkey for reasons I can’t remember why and didn’t sleep for 5 days straight and had to commit myself.
I’m really afraid of going through it again but I have no other options atm, doctors don’t seem to believe in benzo paws or my concerns about having to use gabapentin again, and I’ve seen a lot of doctors… So I don’t know what to do, I’m on day 3 of gabapentin again and I’m having some mild memory and realization issues, but I’m sleeping so I don’t know what’s worse.
Any advice plz?

So I’m 21 days past my last Benzo. Basicly 3-4mg Ativan daily for 5 months. I did a rapid 6 day detox center taper on Valium. Back on 9/1/26 my crappy psychiatrist upped my Effexor from 150mg to 225mg. I can’t tell if these are side effects of Effexor or withdrawals. I remember years ago I didn’t tolerate 225mg Effexor well at all, and I think I had jaw clenching anxiety and headaches. Any insight from anybody, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all. Was prescribed clonazapam for 20 years for an "as needed" basis which usually meant anywhere from .5 mg to 1.5mg a week. One year ago I started a six month taper that was absolute agony, and now I'm six months clean. Most of my symptoms have gone away. No sweating, no insomnia, anxiety is still higher than usual but not horrible. Nearly all the real bad symptoms have passed.
But for the life of me I can't get rid of this headache and light sensitivity. Pretty much every day behind my left eye and in my forehead I am experiencing pain. It's similar to a migraine but it improves if I take a long shower, or if am able to relax, so I think it's just tight muscles or something. During my taper it was so bad I couldn't watch TV without wanting to puke, so I went to an ENT, ophthalmologist, and headache specialist who ordered an MRI and bloodwork. Everything came back fine so through process of elimination I think it's just long withdrawal symptoms.
Anyone deal with this crap for months/years and can let me know there is an eventual light at the end of the tunnel? This past week has been really hard as I had a very stressful last week and it has triggered the symptoms to be worse.

I started a benzodiazepine 11 years ago after I got my child. I understand why I got it since I was in such bad shape mentally. Fast forward 10 years ( still on it) and I went to a detox clinic that took me off of it in 3 weeks. I wouldn't recommend this. When I got home I started to fall into a black hole and ended up in the worst depression I've ever had. My anxiety was also sky rocketing and I was so afraid every waken minute. My mind was racing uncontrollably and I started to see another reality. It felt like I was in hell.
While being in this major life events occurred. Move, sickness and death in family. I was put back on benzos but only half of the dosage I was to start from so I never stabilised. I had to start taper after 2 months. Tapering now. I have no choice because the doctor can't give me more. But it's like my life has changed because of the way I look at the world. I feel terror in my chest and my brain all the time and people ask WHY and WHAT are you so scared of and I can only answer my nervous system has crashed.
I look at people around me calmly doing things while I'm scared. I live with my child in a country I'm not from with no family and I can't and don't want to move back.
I have tinnitus and inner akathisia, panic attacks, severe anxiety and depression. There is no point in getting help from pshycatri here because they really can't do anything. Trust me I've tried. I can't work as before, I struggle to eat. I can't watch tv cuz I can't focuse. I'm severely depressed and scared and I know no doctor or pshycatri can help. The week I have my daughter I just have to act as normal as I can. I'm just surviving. I wonder if the world ever will look normal again? And don't say 'Take a walk, eat healthy food and exercise'. I'm trying to survive this. Will the world ever look normal again?

I’ve been taking Ativan .5mgs since December of last year. I wasn’t taking it everyday only sparingly. These days my crisis has gotten so much worse that I find I take it multiple times a week and it’s been like that for 3 months now.
I’ve noticed a lot of what people talk about here and I have severe symptoms. I don’t want to continue a drug that is so harmful but am confused where I land in the spectrum of dependence and how I should proceed. I have no quality of life.
Thoughts anyone? I want to get off but fear this whole rebound withdrawl effect. I’m not stabilized but I also don’t want to continue something not made for long time use. It feels like a vicious cycle

It’s been a little over a week and I feel like complete shit. I can’t eat and on top of that I’m sooooo grouchy due to lack of sleep. My plug is out and doesn’t reup til the 17th so I legit have no source. I have cravings but no rebound but to be honest this feels really annoying.

Been addicted to Valium for years, I quit a while back and had bad withdraws for a week or so, my work colleague in the office is constantly popping Valium’s during the day, he offered me some I turned him down, today i ended up taking 15mg and hes given me 9 x 5mg tabs ffs

I’ve been on lorazepam daily for the last three months due to a severe spike in my panic disorder and no other meds working for me. Before that, I used to take lorazepam on the very rare occasion that I knew my tools wouldn’t work like being on an airplane or something like that, but I had never taken it continuously.
And so ever since I’ve been on it daily I feel like I’m just a shell of what I used to be. It’s like my whole personality is gone. I always feel very uneasy, it’s like the life has been sucked out if me, I sleep poorly, I’m depressed and I wasn’t before, etc etc The interdose rebound anxiety is no joke… it’s the worst anxiety I’ve ever felt and I thought I had seen it all.
I was reading an investigative piece the other day about the danger of benzos and how they can turn on you pretty quickly. While they’re helpful short term — they can worsen your symptoms a lot afterwards and then you’re stuck with them. I just wonder why not more people are talking about this? Is anyone else feeling like benzos have just made everything worse for them?

So I'm having increased panic with severe symptoms lately that brought me to ER and multiple doctor visits, after which I got Ativan to use per needed. I took it irregularly 6 times within 3 weeks, with the last break being 10 days, so I assume I wasn't addicted then.
However after that break I had extreme anxiety again where I couldn't eat, sleep, get up etc so i had to take it again. I took it on: 19th 1g, 22nd 1g, 23rd 0.5g, 24th 2x0.5g. The day of 25th went fine but now 26th and 27th are again pure hell and it's increasing. How do I know if I'm already addicted, and should taper or just not take it anymore?
I know that doesn't sound like a lot of days but I feel like Ativan is just throwing me deeper and deeper. I can't tell if my symptoms are just from Ativan or my regular anxiety being out of control. I have health anxiety too and I'm scared to just ride it out without Ativan for the next couple of days because the symptoms are really severe and it feels life threatening. I'm also being investigated for various other physical health disorders because my symptoms are so severe and I don't know if it's "just" anxiety. As you can see it's a bit of a catch 22 where I'm getting worse but not sure if it's Ativan making me worse or just my anxiety or my physical health.

I was given xanax for the first time when I was 18 but still in highschool. I started having ugly panic attacks triggered by a very random thing that’s not important, and because my mom didn’t wanna deal with it she just sent me to the doctor and they gave me xanax.
They only told me to take it when I have a panic attack and half of a 0.25. Tbh i don’t remember how often i used to take it back then but when i left for college my mom packed a few boxes for me.
I remember in college I had another one of those periods where i would get ugly panic attacks and couldn’t get out of the house, so i was taking 0.25 daily and at some point i suddenly stopped with no withdrawal symptoms. However, i would still take it occasionally for sleep.
Over the years i carried on taking it but not regularly, maybe a few times a month, especially when: i’m home alone, can’t sleep, or about to have a panic attack.
I feel like if i didn’t have it in the house i couldn’t live. Is this addiction and could i say goodbye to it forever at some point? It feels impossible right now.

I have absolutely never been through nor felt anything like diazapam WD in my life. Can’t even describe most of it, but this nerve pain is unreal. I’ve read a couple writings from other people who had the nerve pain similar to what I’ve had, so I attribute it to the WD, along with every other god awful symptom I’ve got in the past 14 weeks since I stopped diazapam CT. The pain felt like a horribly pinched nerve in my neck for a month. Went away Saturday and woke up Sunday feeling like my left ankle was broken (it isn’t, and I’ve been healthy my whole life up to here). Can’t move today at all as foot won’t rotate or support body weight in any way. But only pins and needles feeling when it’s rested. Severe, unbearable pain with weight or trying to rotate it…again, like a pinched nerve. I don’t want to take muscle relaxers nor pain meds as this could last days or months, and neither would help the source issue. So has anyone found anything that helps this? It isn’t like a burning pain, it’s like a metal rod is thrown through the top of my foot if any pressure at all is on it.

Anyone else feeling a similar way? For context I'm 6 weeks out after basically cold turkeying and kindling myself a little bit, I was using 2mg on and off for about a year and then 1mg daily for 3 months.
I'm incredible thankful that most of the BAD symptoms are gone now like I'm not constantly on the verge of panic, I'm not convinced I have a brain tumor or anything and I can actually sleep 6-8 hours almost every night!! (I feel incredibly unrefreshed every time I wake up but NO COMPLAINS either way😂)
So now that most of the anxiety symptoms are gone I'm left with really bad depression and fatigue which has been doing my head in! I've had depression the entire time hell even while I was using benzos but this is next level, I'm just so so tired constantly and I've basically given up on trying to socialise for the time being.
To make matters worse I just started university and I'm in my first month, because of this benzo withdrawal I hardly have any friends! The only saving grace for me at the moment is weed as I'm finally in a place where I can smoke and not feel completely anxious, and also running 10-15 minutes a day really helps.
But yeah I have basically no desire to do anything anymore and I'm wondering how long it's going to take for me to sorta go back to baseline, I know I haven't done permanent damage but tbh the idea of me feeling like this for another year or two genuinely scares me a little bit and I'm now willing to try basically anything to speed up my recovery.
Anyone delt with this and recovered or anything? Would also love to know if anybody has experience with LSD/Shrooms as I took 150ug of LSD about 3 days ago which genuinely did help me afterwards, although I was somehow still feeling "anhedonic" at times while tripping which was mental!

Since my downward spiral with this drug began 2 weeks ago I have been suffering from SEVERE emotional pain - more so than ever before.
Thoughts are so bad that I let this happen to myself. After everything ive been through in life and my addictions to alcohol and kratom. Now this.
My thought life has been so dark I just dont know how to continue at this point.
Also bc this was started by losing several of my pills, trying to CT, reinstating at the ER but not being given enough bc the er doc didn't believe anyone could have withdrawals from .5 mgs, I am once again in a tablet deficit and am having to cut doses to make the rx last.
Just such a nightmare. I cant deal with these thoughts.
