Image Orson three days in to his antibiotics for his abscess. He’s grown use to on demand 24/7 spoiling. It’s currently 2:13am and I’m plugging in a heated blanket for him. His eye looks almost back to normal!

Image Basset lovers, although this isn’t specific to the breed, I wanted to bring attention to something called retrobulbar abscess.

Post image

Orson woke up with a swollen eye on Sunday. He was perfectly fine on Saturday. I took him to the first emergency vet appointment they had. I figured he scratched his eye or had something in his eye. The vet opened his jaw all the way and he yelped. Then she checked his eye pressure. She diagnosed him with a retrobulbar abscess. These can happen when something from outside like sharp grasses, or shards of sticks, puncture through the upper palette and cause an infection. The reason he yelped when his jaw was open was due to the position of the abscess.

Long story short, be aware with what your dogs are chewing on outside. Orson lovesssss sticks and eating grass. But also don’t put off the vet for any changes in the eye. The vet said any change in the eye warrants an emergency appointment because they can get bad fast.

Video Integrating Theodore with new kitten

Hi all.

Theodore is our two year old Basset. He lives with another dog and a cat. (A cat who he plays with all day and they are best friends- however she was already an adult when we brought him home) Last week we got a brand new kitten he isn't integrating as we thought he would. We have been bringing the new kitten (who is currently set up in my daughter's room) down to the shared space a few times a day to get them used to each other. Theodore cries a lot. In the video you can see this. He is being held as when he gets too close he tried to jump on the kitten. Knowing my boy I know he wants to play but hes 30kg of pure muscle and shes 100g of fluff. Any ideas or suggestions at getting them better acquainted? We've done the usual scent swapping with blankets. TIA

Watching Sir Tibbles Waddlesworth and Walter von Waddlesworth, Esq. gallop towards me always cracks me up.

Our friend did a wonderful family portrait session in the woods and captured our boys running through the woods 😂❤️🐶

I remember looking at bassethoundsrunning years ago and it’s even better to see it in person. One of the top joys of owning bassets!

Discussion Are ear flushing procedures worth it?

My basset hound , Ace, has been struggling with chronic ear infections for about half a year now. He has Addison's disease, so I take him to the vet for his monthly shot, and to help his ears. The vet sent me to a dermatologist because he probably has environmental allergies. They need to get rid of the infection before they can test for allergies, but nothing seems to work.

Ace has three different types of bacteria in his ear. They explained that two of them are notoriously difficult to treat. The dermatologist wants to do this procedure that flushes out his ears. It's incredibly expensive, but I'm willing to do it if it helps Ace. When I expressed concern about the price, they told me that I didn't have to do it.

Does anyone have experience with this procedure? Should I do it? I'm willing to put down the money if it makes Ace's ear feel better. When I called the vet, they told me that they accept care credit, or would it be worth it to look into pet insurance.

Discussion Front Clip Harnesses Friendly for Basset Height?

Post image
189 Upvotes

Hi all, I’ve recently made the switch to a front-leading/front clip harness, which is helping with the 10-15% of each walk where my Georgia plants her feet and outright refuses to walk in the same direction as me, and I’m forced to pull/drag her short distances, bc yes we must eventually go to/from home, get to the car, or the elevator/stairs to go potty. (We no longer have a yard and are adjusting to a very nice city life, but she’s like this in the suburbs and country too, since she’s a pup)

Anyway, the front clip harness IS helping somewhat, bc she’s so short and stout like a 🫖 , she’s constantly stepping over her leash and it goes under her arm and I have to untangle it throughout our walk.

Any rec’s or brands you use that are basset height friendly?? Or how are the rest of you avoiding this problem?

Maybe one w/ a higher placed front clip? Or the actual harness sits higher on the neck?

I’m also accepting any and ALL tips for the pulling away/resisting during short distances on the leash She’s great on a leash 85% of the walk, anytime we’re both voluntarily walking the same direction. She doesn’t pull and happily trots along!

We’ve done very expensive behavioral modification and leash training that I can’t really afford rn nor was it that effective, she’s on fluoxetine for anxiety, I’ve used treats, nose shields during training (I don’t like these bc it’s like putting a blindfold on a basset) longer/shorter and retractable vs. standard leashes, etc.

We also go to the dog park for a couple hours 5-6x days a week where she plays and has many puppy/human friends she runs the (nonexistent dog park) streets with her posse of playmates. But now that we moved into a building vs. house, it’s no longer an option to entirely avoid walks in favor of the off leash a beach and park daily.

And before you go and feel sorry for Ms. Georgia as she begrudgingly and very dramatically hops at an angle alongside of me for the 10-15% of the walk where I’m forced to drag/pull her in her harness, please note Georgia is hardly oppressed! She has a private membership and almost daily visits to our local indoor/outdoor dog park 5-6x days a week, she has TWO orthopedic heated Tempur Pedic beds in both bedroom and living room, she eats premium wet food in the a.m. and a mix of dry/wet in the pm bc she goes on hunger strikes when it’s just the kibble, and she uses the same luxury hair care line (Chi!) that I use so we can match. Georgia lives better than I do and I’ll scrimp on my own food so Georgia can have a happy minimally stressful life as my best friend.

es with her presence and receives endless offers of treats, compliments and affection from on our daily travels. Georgia is loving the good life and I am her mere servant and Sherpa that 10-15% of each walk that for once, she’s forced to do something she doesn’t want to do.

It’s Georgia’s 🌍 I just live in it.

Martha is doing well, has more freedom and less stress for me with her GPS. She has learned boundaries; mostly & I can see her location at all times. If we are a distance from our place I have another plan such as sharing her location with my son.

Medical Spondylosis?

Post image
196 Upvotes

Has anyone’s Basset been diagnosed with Spondylosis? Mine was at age 3. He is full of energy and bucks around like a bull. It looked like a shoulder injury to me but vet found Spondylosis in his back. No symptoms other than a limp back then that some pain meds fixed and he was back to his old self. He’s on Dasaquin and fish oil supplements and has lost weight to a healthy weight. Doesn’t seem to be in pain but ever since he was a puppy he has never wanted to SIT. He always lays down. He was diagnosed with pano as a puppy. I’m wondering if this is also a shoulder injury but vet doesn’t think so. To me his shoulder looks much bigger on one side. Thoughts? less

Lost my sweet boy Kalmar on the 20th of October. He was sick for some time, and in his last hours he was having pain which medicine wasn’t helping with at that point, but he’s at peace now. He would have been 13 on February 1st. He was my best friend, my first and only dog, and a very, very special boy. He was a source of endless joy to me and my family. He lived a full and happy life as the most beloved and cherished dog. I’m heartbroken, but I’m so glad I had 12 amazing years.

Medical Pet Insurance

Hey everyone! I’m currently working through which pet insurance to get. I’m hoping to get your opinions with pros and cons of different available options. For example, Trupanion offers deductibles per health complication which could be good long term if as their payments are also unlimited, however the monthly payments are in reduce high in comparison to others, even for a $2000 deductible. Any guidance or insight would be appreciated!
