Sports bar for WNBA final?

Anyone have a recommendation for a place that might be able to show the Atlanta Dream vs Valkyries basketball final this Thursday? (5.30pm). A place for example that shows American sports. Thanks for any tips!

Border Terrier

This might be a long shot, but anyway: we are looking into getting a dog and have fallen for border terriers. Before going for it we would love to get to know/spend some time with a border terrier. Are there any border terrier owners in Basel who are looking for someone to help with their border? We would love to hear from you :)

Why Does Switzerland Have No AI Cybercrime Law?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Switzerland hosts the banks, the crypto foundations and the pharma giants, and it has decided, on purpose, not to write a law for AI. Here is what that bet looks like from the inside.

Start with the literal answer. Switzerland has no AI cybercrime law because it has no AI law at all. On 12 February 2025 the Federal Council decided there would be no Swiss equivalent of the EU AI Act. Instead, it will ratify the Council of Europe's AI Convention through small, sector-specific changes to existing laws, and a draft is due for consultation at the end of 2026. The stated goal is to avoid a "Swiss finish", meaning any burden Swiss firms would carry that EU competitors do not.

Which means that today, in October 2026, an AI-driven attack on a Swiss bank is handled by laws written when the attacker was assumed to be a person.

Is that a gap, or is it the point?

The case that the law is already enough

Swiss criminal law does not care how you broke in. Unauthorised access, data theft, data damage and computer fraud are all offences under the Criminal Code, and none of those articles mention the tool. A ransomware gang using a model to write its exploit commits exactly the same crime as one using a human. Prosecutors in Zurich do not need the words "artificial intelligence" in a statute to charge someone.

That is the Federal Council's argument, and it is not stupid. Technology-neutral law ages better than technology-specific law, and nobody in Bern wants a 2026 statute about "AI agents" that reads like a joke in 2030.

Switzerland did add one piece of hard law. Since April 2025, operators of critical infrastructure must report cyberattacks to the Federal Office for Cybersecurity within 24 hours, with fines up to CHF 100,000 for concealment since October. In the first ten months, 264 attacks were reported. Hospitals, banks, energy suppliers, telecoms. Nobody has been fined yet.
So if the crimes are covered and the reporting exists, what is missing?

What the reporting rule actually tells you

Look at the ratio. The Federal Office received about 65,000 cyber reports in 2025 from the public and companies. Only 264 came through the mandatory channel, because the duty covers critical infrastructure only. Every SME, every family office, every fiduciary, every small private bank below the threshold reports nothing to anyone unless it chooses to.

Now recall what the acceleration does. Exploits that used to cost an expert's week now cost a few thousand francs of compute. The targets that become profitable are precisely the small ones, the ones outside the reporting duty. Switzerland built its one hard rule around the victims attackers used to pick, and the rule is silent on the victims they are about to pick.

How many Swiss SMEs do you think reported a 2025 incident to anybody?

The banks: expectations, not rules
The financial regulator FINMA published its AI guidance in December 2024. It is non-binding. It expects boards to keep an inventory of every AI system, to own AI decisions rather than delegate them to vendors, and to treat AI as both a cyber vulnerability and a cyber target. FINMA's own observation at the time: many Swiss institutions are "in the early stages of AI governance".

Read those two facts together. The regulator says banks are early-stage on governing their own AI. The same banks are deploying agents that read email, move money and talk to customers. And the only thing standing between "expectation" and "rule" is a supervisory conversation.

Meanwhile, across the border, the EU AI Act has been in force since August 2024 and treats credit scoring and other financial uses as high-risk, with obligations and fines attached. Swiss banks serving EU clients are already building to that standard. So the "no Swiss finish" argument cuts both ways: Swiss firms avoid Swiss rules by following Brussels rules anyway.

If a Zurich bank already complies with the EU AI Act for its EU clients, who exactly is the Swiss light-touch approach protecting?

The real bet
Strip the politics away and Switzerland is betting on three things. That technology-neutral criminal law stays sufficient when the cost of attacking collapses. That voluntary guidance moves boards as fast as a binding rule would. And that a draft law arriving at the end of 2026, in force perhaps 2028, lands before the first serious AI-driven incident at a Swiss institution.

The first bet is reasonable. The second is optimistic. The third is a coin flip, and the coin is already in the air.

How do I meet women or people in general? 22M struggling with dating in Switzerland (Basel)

I’m a 22-year-old male and I’m struggling with dating. People here can seem a bit reserved, which makes meeting new people somewhat challenging.

I’ve built a small social circle of guys whom I meet weekly, but there are no women in it, and my friends don’t have female friends either. How do people meet here?

I’m using dating apps, but I rarely get matches, and the few matches I do get lead nowhere. Unfortunately, I’m not into clubbing or drinking. In my free time, I go to the gym; I like outdoor activities such as camping and hiking; I like culture (art, theater, and museums in general); and I like dancing salsa, although I’m a beginner.

I go out regularly in the city, but does anyone have recommendations for where to go or how to meet people?

I have a lot of hobbies like board games, clubbing , sports in general. I would like to find some groups where I could organize or participate to some events or just pass some chill evening while drinking or smoking.

Your favorite place at the Herbstmesse Basel?

I'm gonna be honest: Petersplatz. I like to eat, calm nice atmosphere. I like to buy things I never seen before. I'm not the fan of the Rollercoaster. Too expensive and i feel bad in the stomach and head after the drive. Yes I know the food is also expensive.

[Looking for] official Migrolino swag

Hey folks! Hope y'all are having a nice weekend ✌️ I'm looking for a Migrolino t-shirt, a hat, or anything at all that I could wear for a costume. Maybe someone that used to work there still has something lying around, and is happy to get rid of it? I surfed the web, and asked the staff in a shop, but no luck so far. Ideas on where to look for this are also very welcome.

Thanks for reading! Cheers :)

Swiss Indoors will start soon and I would like (or at least try) to see if I can see or meet some players outside the tournament.

Do we know where they are going to train?

Looking for an affordable family photographer in Basel

Hi everyone! 😊

I’m looking for recommendations for a good photographer in Basel who does family photos. Ideally, someone who takes natural, relaxed photos rather than anything too posed.

I’m hoping to find someone reasonably priced — I know professional photography can be expensive, but I’m not looking to spend a fortune.

If you’ve had a good experience with someone, I’d love to hear your recommendations, and if possible, an idea of their prices would be really helpful too!

Thanks so much! ❤️

Cheap/secondhand winter overcoat in Basel

Hello everyone!

I’ll be visiting Basel from 18 November to 2 December, and I’m a bit confused about whether I should buy a winter jacket or overcoat here in Bangladesh or wait until I arrive in Basel.

I live in a tropical climate, and I’ve heard from several people that it’s better to buy winter clothing in Europe because it’s more suitable for the weather there. However, since my visit is relatively short, I don’t want to spend too much money on something I might not use often back home. I also have limited luggage space — surprisingly, my baggage allowance is only 20 kg!

I already have a couple of overcoats that are comfortable for temperatures around 9–10°C, and I’m planning to bring those along with thermal innerwear.

Would these be enough if I layer properly, or would I need a warmer winter jacket for Basel in late November? If buying one there is a better option, I’d love recommendations for affordable shops. Secondhand or thrifted coats are absolutely fine!

Also, what kind of price range should I expect for new versus secondhand winter coats?

I’d really appreciate any advice from people who live in Basel or have visited around this time of year. Thank you!

Household Trash in Basel

Hello, i just learnt that there are rules to household trash in Switzerland and it differs from a canton to another. Since i’ll be in Basel, can someone please explain in details how household trash works?

- Where to put Recyclables / is there a pdf that states ALL recyclables items?

- Do i need to but specific trash bags or a sticker? From where exactly? And how much does it cost? How many would i need in a month?

- Do i need to but different trash bags for different sort of items (ex : plastics / aluminum / Carton etc) or maybe 2 bags 1 for recyclables and one for other?

Help i’m confused :/

I vibecoded and rigorously testet this map of Basel that shows prices of coffe/beer/pizza. It uses a scraper that runs every three weeks and scans all the menus it finds. Its not complete and everybody can add prices. I already added a lot of beer prices ._. Its free of course.
