I have a problematic room mate who is constantly leaving messes, dirty, taking and moving things that don’t belong to her, not pulling her weight in the household, making up lies, and overall just being a pain in the ass.
For the past 2 days, she has left a rice cooker on the counter filled with rice that’s been on for 52 hours… like over 2 days and it’s hot. i opened it 10 minutes ago and steam came out. the other roomie said she’s seen her come out and serve herself out of it multiple times over the last 2 days like she’s just leaving the rice cooker on with rice in it and eating out of it. I know that people leave rice in cookers for extended periods on warm, but that long? I kind of thought it was like a 12 hour-ish, maybe overnight time window for that
Im caucasian (so is my roommate) from a VERY caucasian household. and i’m actually not even from this country. So im honestly not sure, Is this normal?
Just to be clear I am genuinely asking and not trying to be an asshole, it just seems like an excessively long time

I see a lot of posts here, especially from when I used to live with flatmates, that made me realise my situation wasn’t even that bad compared to what some people have to deal with.
I didn’t have the best flatmates either, but there are definitely much worse ones out there.
Still, about three months ago, I reached my limit and decided to move out and get a studio apartment of my own.
I’m spending more money, no doubt about it. I have to cut back on quite a few other things. But honestly, the improvement in my mental health has been worth every penny.
At the end of the day, health is the most important thing we have, and mental health is a huge part of that.
I understand that many people simply can’t afford to live alone, and I’m not suggesting that everyone can or should do it. But if you’re in a position where you could afford it and you’re only choosing not to because you want to save more money or spend it on other things, I’d seriously consider making the move.
For me, having my own space, peace and quiet, and not having to worry about other people’s habits or deal with the stress of sharing a home has made a massive difference to my everyday life.
Sometimes we focus so much on saving money that we forget what we’re sacrificing in the process.
Just my two cents.

Its right fucking there. All you had to do was lift the lid. You already walked over to the kitchen just to.. place trash on the fucking counter? Trash that fits in the bin right next to you perfectly fine? Why? Fucking why?

TDLR; 26M Roommate left his messes everywhere, never entirely cleaned behind himself, and would cook quite literally 24/7 to the point where 27F roommate and I couldn't cook anymore.
Hello! This is my first ever post, and I'm happy to say that I do not live there anymore since the 26th, but this is definitely something I need to share.
Me [22F] and my roommate [27F] have gotten a new roommate [26M] around august.
He did tell us he would be cooking quite a bit, but what came left kinda left me and my roommate lowk speechless.
Ever since he moved in, he would be cooking 24/7. And I mean... Everyday every hour.
I'd wake up, he's in the kitchen. I wanna make myself lunch, he's in the kitchen cooking again.
For supper, he was YET AGAIN cooking. Like.
This guy would NOT let go of the kitchen.
Huge respect for him cooking everytime but holy fuck man make yourself leftovers or something.. 😭 He'd be taking over the kitchen for 2+ hrs sometimes and me and my roommate fully gave up on cooking for ourselves because we both hated talking to someone about issues like that.
Fast forward a bit later, we both realize he leaves his messes everywhere. Like sure, he does the dishes... then leaves the stove fully dirty, the air fryer uncleaned, a pot on top of the stove for a full day until he next needs it, trash not being taken out, recycling bin just spilling everywhere...
Shaves his beard, leaves his hair all over the bathroom counter and sink.
There would ALWAYS be water EVERYWHERE after his shower. Like.. The bathroom became a lake.
Water all over the counter, the floor, etc. to the point where it had leaked in the basement where the tenants lockers' were and it dripped on another tenant's stuff, we had to get repairs in the bathroom and when my roommate confronted him, he said "that ain't me"....
This guy has tested my patience so much while I lived there that even if my roommate still has to live with him and that I feel bad for her, I'm sad to say I am so glad I left.
He was genuinely always all over the place, taking over everything, never taking the trash out, or the recycling bin (to a point where he put stuff NEXT to the recycling bin instead of IN the bin), there would always either be water, hair or his clothes in the bathroom.
I was living pure hell
Thank god I'm not there anymore, but jesus christ 😭

He goes into me and my gf's room without knocking no matter how many times we've told him it makes us uncomfortable. It especially creeps me out that he goes in there while we're trying to sleep. It's almost always something related to our cats. He gets paranoid that they aren't eating/drinking and obsessively checks their bowls or he goes in there looking for cat toys.
We've said it's an invasion of our privacy and he needs to trust that we take good care of cats. It doesn't get through to him. He always says something along the lines of "I was just checking..." or says that it's OK for him to go in because the door is open (it's almost always propped open a little for the cats). His sister also lives with us, but she refuses to take sides in the situation.
We're moving out in August, so at least we're done with this eventually. We've had other issues with him too, but this is the one that bothers me most. I just want some privacy in my own room.

My roommate and I are sharing a college apartment. Our shared bathroom has a sink and a shower. Every single time my roommate showers or washes her hands, water ends up everywhere -- the sink counter, the floor, and all over the mirror and the walls. If you walk into the bathroom within 24 hours of her using it, you're walking into puddles. Her bathmat sits right next to the shower and is constantly soggy with water. Sometimes, the puddles even get onto the carpeted floor outside the bathroom. I just don't understand a) how she gets the bathroom so wet, and b) how she doesn't notice the bathroom is so wet. The puddles reach all the way to the toilet. How do I get her to stop covering the bathroom floor in a layer of water?
Attached image is an example of how the bathmat looks after she showers.
ETA: I'm going to ask her how it gets so wet whenever she gets home. Maybe, someday, we'll have answers.
Bonus ETA: This is an old picture. The mat in the picture has since finished drying, and the floor that was under it seems to be fine. I take all of your point on better places to hang something up to dry.

One of my housemates does this thing where I say “no” and then she says, “NO🫶.”
It’s bad, but I’m not gonna get into ✨all of it✨ (I’ve gotten feedback that the way she’s treating me is “abusive”) ‘cause it’s not worth it.
We had to have a mediation on Sunday because things escalated so much.
I felt better afterwards because the mediator started off by saying that this was to focus on safety issues as ROOMMATES, not as friends. So, we talked logistics, boundaries, and guidelines.
One of the things I asked for was for her to wear headphones during my virtual appointments. The mediator asked if she could hear through my door and she said yes. This is the second time I’ve had a roommate listen in on my private therapy sessions.
ANYWAY! That wasn’t fun.
But, one of the b i g g e s t fights we had was over her boyfriend’s LOUD dog coming over. He chases the cats, he YAPS YAPS YAPS. I do not know HOW the universe constructed such a loud and HIGH PITCHED dog.
Context:
-I had tried repeatedly to compromise
—> especially with noise cancelling headphones, fans, any kind of buffer, but he can be heard through all of it
-the loud yaps trigger sensory meltdowns that I am in the process of getting professional help (occupational therapy) to manage since I am autistic, but I can only do so much
-When I expressed discomfort, she said that “having time with her boyfriends dog was important for her health”
-I kept trying to compromise and then said no. She said she was “having a PTSD response” and “was triggered” and we took space for a few days
-I said “I need you to accept my no” and she said “no”
-She planned for the dog to come over anyway before the mediation
-GOD EVEN TYPING THIS IS EXHAUSTING I’m trying so hard to summarize this
Anyway, but in the mediation, we made a compromise for this issue.
And then, I get this email saying, “the next time the dog is coming over is Thursday”
And then, I feel crazy because didn’t we just make this plan and set these boundaries and now you’re just… going against that?
So, I clarify the plan. I’m calm, I’m not emotional, I’m chill:
“For clarification on the plan discussed in the mediation meeting:
-Star comes over once every two weeks on a day landing between Friday - Monday
-You'll send my an email by Wednesday, so I have time to make arrangements to be out of the house
-I'll be out of the house while he's over”
And then it’s, “Your notes from mediation are mostly correct (he's coming over every other week between Friday-Monday, not strictly two weeks apart).”
TWO WEEKS AND EVERY OTHER WEEK ARE THE SAME THING, I looked it up !!
This shit is just so weird.
We also said we would switch to email communication and I’ve gotten four new threads today.
I’ve been practicing not being emotional about how she treats me anymore (especially since I’m trying to manage work, my mental and physical health, etc.), but this is just super duper weird and I just have to say it:
THIS FEELS WEIRD!!! AND UNNECESSARILY HARD!!!
I know living with other folks isn’t easy, especially since I’ve almost always had to do it, but like… this is hard HARD HARD. It’s like she’s been playing chess, but I didn’t even think there was a board game at all. It’s weird.
I’m going to keep practicing disengaging and being super calm and cool, but this is so weird !
This is weird !!!!
Nothing I can do about it except keep using my skills and work towards finally living alone. I just had to shout it into the void, I guess.

My car was keyed recently. I have no evidence on who did it. I suspect it was my roomate because of her erratic and bizzare behaviors, and given that we've had many conflicts.
There are no security cameras outside my apartment, so I'll never be able to confirm my suspicions.

Yeah it could be worse but I am just confused. Genuinely confuddled. If I keep garbage in my room during a busy study time I put it all in a pile next to my chair and then take it out during my bathroom break.
Every time I come back during the week after being gone for like 48h my roomate somehow gets q-tips, food wrappers, bottle caps, and full soda cans on every square inch on the floor like he literally tossed it behind his shoulder or he took a leafblower to it. Like how is there shreds of paper and sticker backings all the way next to my dresser. Its behind a wall, hello.. Then even when im back he just leaves it there. At least sweep it into a bag.

I (19ftm) live in a student house with 3 other people. 2 people share a room
the person I share a room with honestly gets on my nerves so much
she either stays up late watching something on her laptop, watching tiktok or listening to music. all without earphones. when she listens to music, she sings along to it or sometimes even whistles for some reason
I've asked her before to please stop since I go to sleep way before her, but she goes right back to doing this stuff after some time
I really do not understand how someone can be so inconsiderate. I have been woken up on numerous occasions because of her making noise, but not once did she consider that she needs to tone it down
I am so tired of asking the same thing over and over again. we're both adults here. why is it so hard for her to understand you shouldn't be making noise when someone else is sleeping?
sometimes I consider getting revenge by making noise early in the morning when she's asleep. but I doubt that would help
it's currently 3:35am as I type this and my alarm goes off at 5:15am. plus, I have an exam today which is just absolutely wonderful

TLDR: Housemate who has lived here for years (I've just moved here) is hairdressing in the shared spaces - unhygienic therefore restricting my use of the kitchen and bathroom.
I moved here recently. She told me she works from home once a week. It wasn't until after I'd agreed to move in and paid everything that she told me she's a hairdresser. She uses the kitchen and bathroom (both downstairs) for cutting and dyeing hair. She told me that her and the person who was previously in this room both coexisted in the kitchen. I said it's unhygienic to have hairs in the kitchen so I wouldn't be able to cook or eat there.
She just said "sorry for the inconvenience" that's it. She's been here for several years, I don't have details for the landlord or agency - I pay rent to her and she pays it to the agency. But the fact that she's been here for so many years doing this, means seemingly they know she's doing it? I don't know. I don't know what to do about this.
I've moved 4 times in the past year because I've been deceived every time about the living situation. For example, lying about it being quiet and clean when it's not. And I'm so tired of moving but I'm so tired of having to keep on confronting them, be ignored and then have to move again, anyway because no changes are made.
It's a shared space, I haven't even eaten or gone to the toilet yet (it's 1pm right now) because I hear them yapping and her doing the person's hair. She seems to have no sense of hygiene. I saw her walk barefoot in the kitchen the other day; she has cats that also take up all of the shared space, and that's an issue I've already had to confront her about (because they were making noise at night and she refused twice to keep them in one room, before eventually surprisingly relenting after I told her I'd have to reconsider living here - now they sleep in her room at night). This is a woman in her 40s, by the way. I'm in my late 20s and this is how she's behaving. The other housemate who is here (40s, M) doesn't seem to care because 1) he's not here the day she does this and 2) he's barely in the shared spaces and apparently doesn't hear anything at night.
I feel like I have to avoid being here (which I did last week) just to avoid having to have my space impeached on, not hear the noise of them talking, the hairdryer etc. which is anxiety inducing. But I shouldn't have to feel like this when I am paying rent, too.
She has way too much control over the shared spaces (all of the decoration is hers, she has a box in the kitchen for all the hair supplies, she has these cats, she also has birds in another bedroom). Considering she was so stubborn about the cats, and because she's been here for so many years, with clearly no push back from anybody, she must think this is acceptable behaviour. She said she was going to be moving in a few months - turns out it's not going to be until April, at least, I just found out. Part of me wants to find out who this agency/landlord is so I can see if they're aware of it but then I don't want to have tension in the house with her, although I kinda already do and I've literally only been here for a few weeks. What would you do? This whole thing is bizarre and exhausting already and I haven't even finished unpacking yet.

I (22f) live with my roommate (24f), while we get along with each other and have no issues with cleaning or anything like that. She can be incredibly annoying. Every time I have a conversation with her, EVERY SINGLE TIME, I have to basically repeat what I said or she asks me something that has nothing to do with what I said. She is also very religious, which makes things a bit awkward sometimes because I am not and I don’t try to act like I am. I feel like she judges me because of things like having sex and sharing a bed with my boyfriend when he comes over. She talks to herself constantly and it sounds like she’s having a full blown conversation with someone. I keep to myself a lot because, I can feel a bit overwhelmed by her. I know this is probably just rude of me but, I needed to get this off my chest.
r/badroommates • u/SilentHillLuver69 • 1d ago
moved in with a roommate from Facebook Marketplace in April. Things became increasingly tense: she changed the Wi-Fi password, locked the thermostat, slammed dishes around, and took my clothes out of the dryer to put her own already clean, dry clothes in to remove wrinkles. If I moved her clothes to make room for my laundry, she’d complain they’d get wrinkled.
I have ADHD and haven’t always been consistent with chores, but I’ve made an effort to contribute.
My new place was available on the 24th. I said I’d aim to move out then but might need more time. She expected me to return the keys that day, while I assumed I had until the 31st. When I asked for that extra time, she freaked out, saying I wasn’t following her schedule. My room is now empty except for the final cleaning.
My best friend thinks she’s rushing me unnecessarily and suspects she may be staying in the apartment herself. She also thinks I may have been overcharged on rent.

I just found out that my roommate and ex-best friend distorts and exaggerates stories about living together in our shared apartment and tells them at work. Intending to make me look bad, I don't know why, how is he capable of something like that.
Furthermore, she's abusing this; I can't even make phone calls at home during the day because she complains and tells everyone at work about it. At this moment, she has been screaming and laughing on the phone for 2 hours.
I mean, first and foremost is life in our apartment, something private, and then. I don't go around telling everyone that she doesn't take out the trash and that she always leaves the kitchen dirty...so????? Furthermore, at HER workplace, where I have friends and acquaintances...do you know how I found this out? My boyfriend also works there.
So basically, I found out she talks trash about me and even my boyfriend like it's nothing... Do you know how many favors I've done for her? I even went with her to her fertility treatments, dude...I receive her packages, I take care of her when she's sick.
It's all over, I'm devastated in bed, not eating. Why, I could just...tell her to go to hell, but she has a reputation for sabotaging the work of colleagues she doesn't like. And
And I don't want her to do that to my boyfriend..
So I've been crying for two days and today I couldn't even eat; I feel an incredible betrayal in my back...
The best part is, today he greets me with "hiiiii" as if nothing had happened.
She is detestable.
(Yes, I should move, but in the short term I don't know what to do.)

I couldn't even keep the hand towel in the bathroom because at least two of my housemates don't use soap when they "wash" their hands after using the toilet.

So this is a bit of a doozy so here it goes. I’m more so posting for my own sanity to get this written down where I can get feedback and advice.
TLDR: Roommate who was my friend went behind my back and found a new place to live while I was under the impression we were looking for a new place together. Gave bs excuses as to why she’s leaving and is actively doing the behavior she used as her reason to leave the lease.
So I’ve lived with this person for 2 years now and for the most part we’ve gotten along fine. We developed a friendship and I opened up to her about my past and she did the same. She could be a bit controlling and emotional but I never thought nothing of it and offered to be a shoulder to lean on if she needed anything.
So as we’re first becoming friends she tells me about how it’s so nice that I’m on the lease now because her old roommates used to have noisy sex all the time apparently. I said that sucks and made a note and always kept it quiet and respectful whenever I’d have anyone over. I told her about my past roommate situations and almost being homeless due to poor roommate choices. We’re month to month and we agreed if anyone wanted to leave to give a two month notice to all people living on property to give us enough time to find a new spot and not be put out on such short notice.
As we’re live together she has multiple issues she comes to me just to vent to, I’m more than happy to hear her out and give her advice if she wanted it. We got along great and things were smooth. That all started to change when my little brother moved in.
When my little brother moved in everything was fine at first until he started dating his gf. At the time my roommate was in the middle of an off portion of her on and off again boyfriend and she was pretty down. (This dude is totally using her and I’ve tried to tell her multiple times to stop talking to the guy after so much drama but she refused to listen and is an adult so I did all I can). So one day she comes to me in tears saying that she heard my lil brother and his gf having sex and asked if I could talk to him about it. I obliged and just told my brother to be respectful and he agreed and listened. Him and his gf never took up space in common areas, didn’t overuse the kitchen, kept stuff clean, all that. And then sure enough a few days later my roommate comes crying to me about hearing my brother again.
At this point I’m getting a little annoyed because I’ve never heard it but I don’t share a wall. But I’m kinda like, we’re roommates, just talk to him about it like an adult. So she wants to do a house meeting. At this point my brother’s gf has been over a lot but again, not taking any of the common spaces. We talk and come to an agreement. Because my brother’s gf is moving halfway across the states in 2.5 weeks she won’t be over every night but she can be over a decent amount due to her literally leaving the state we’re in. So at this point it’s established that the gf won’t be an issue to my roommate anymore after a couple weeks, she won’t be over all the time and she’ll stay only in my bros room. We all agree and that’s what ends up happening for about a week.
A day after that week we look at a new rental as rent is gonna be increasing on our current spot and we’re looking for a better deal. Everything is going fine and normal no problems. 2 days later on a Saturday (we’re all off on Saturday) my brother tells me apparently my roommate banged in the wall at 9:30am and was pissed because apparently she heard them again (they were being quiet, for context there is a whole ass closet in between my roommate and brothers wall). So my bro apologizes and after that everything seems cool.
Literally the next day she asks for a house meeting asap and me and bro are free Sunday evening around 10. She comes in and says she found a new place to live and is moving out in a month. Apparently hearing my little bro at 9:30am on a weekend being quiet was the final straw and she went behind our backs and just found a place, committed and expected us to just be ok with it.
Sure it’s legal but like I told her about my past and we made an agreement to not do this. So she says basically that she shouldn’t have to hear that on her day off (bruh be an adult and put in some ear plugs or hold out just one more week till his gf is gone). Like she agreed to this situation and then threw a fit when it wasn’t perfect for her. And now I’m stressed tf looking for any place to live with my bro because we are not staying in this already expensive place with some random roommate
The best part is she’s been having her shitty on and off again bf “sneak in” (I hear that bitch come on everytime) and they’re having sex and showering together. All stuff that she complained she “shouldn’t have to hear” because it’s too hard. I’m at a loss here.
She went behind my back and put me in a stressful financial situation for her own sake, complained about how she never had to deal with adults having sex before (lies she was in a dorm in college), still has her shit piece bf over and doing the same thing she “had to move out” for. It’s like where does the hypocrisy end? I’m just so shocked and angry and sad that someone I thought was my friend would do this to me.
So yeah, fuck me I guess, if you read all this you’re just as crazy as me for writing it all down. So you’re cool :)

For context when we first moved in with eachother he wasn't this religious, infact he rarely spoke about his religion. But hes gotten increasingly more religious in the past few months to the point that probably 80% of the conversations he starts with me are about the bible/God.
If we're talking about something that in no way relates to the Bible in any way, he'll find a way to bring it up. I actually have to leave my bedroom door closed otherwise he'll come in and start talking about Christianity, and this can go on for 10+ minutes. He'll come in and talk loudly over my TV, or if im wearing headphones he'll still continually try to talk to me. It feels like I'm being lectured to, he knows I'm athiest.
I do plan on moving out when the lease is up, but that won't be for another 5 months. I just wanted to vent because its becoming more and more irritating.

so i recently moved into a shared apartment/dorm with 2 other girls for school (strangers, we met on move-in day). one is a bit older and shes very neat, nice, and cleans up after herself. the other one is my age, and she doesnt clean up after herself at all, especially after using the kitchen. she leaves food scraps (?) in the sink drain, the stove (electric) has a giant food stain that wont scrape off, and she leaves a lot of mess on the counters too.
all of us have a group chat together, and me and the nice roommate are a little closer because we actually talk to eachother and help eachother out. the other roommate doesnt talk to us or acknowledge us (which im fine with, i also dont love talking to people when im at home).
its usually the nice roommate texting in the groupchat asking for the place to be cleaned/whoever did that mess to clean up after themselves, but the bad roommate keeps pretending it isnt hers and acts like she's been cleaning when we both know she hasnt.
we definitely know because me and he nice roommate chat with eachother, and also when the bad roommate was on holiday a week ago it was so clean, no messes at all. its only ever dirty when shes around.
how should we make her clean..? at least after herself.

TLDR: Just moved to NYC and had to have roommates, they’re both gross af one of them let’s her pet “go” in the kitchen sink and I’m considering just paying more in rent when the lease is up to avoid this happening again.
Guess I’m here to vent/get advice for what you all have done in the past.
I (25f) recently moved to New York, and I had already gotten myself to be OK with the fact that grown people need roommates here because it’s so expensive, but now I’m starting to think I would rather have less disposable income and pay more to live solo than do this again.
I moved into an apartment with two other girls, I thought that would be the cleaner route. I am OK with messy, the occasional jacket left lying around that you just don’t have time to get to until the weekend… I understand that, but they are absolutely DISGUSTING. So much so that I have purchased all of my own cookware, silverware, cutting boards, and a sponge, etc. because I just don’t trust anything that they touch. I’m now keeping all of my stuff in my room. I previously offered to buy an air fryer for everyone because I thought it would be super convenient and I had one back home, but now I don’t even want them touching it because I know that they’re dirty people and I couldn’t trust them to keep it clean and then it will be on me when it breaks or something.
When I first moved in, there was no soap in the bathroom and I just assumed they ran out so I purchased more, but as the days went on, I realized that neither of them wash their hands…ever. I have never heard them run water after flushing the toilet.
Neither of them take the trash out either. They just let it pile up. I’ve taken it out several times since I’ve been here and the only time I got one of them to take it out was when I specifically said hey can you take it out on your way downstairs.
I am no longer using any of the utensils, as I mentioned so I’m not washing anything either. I deep cleaned the dishwasher over the weekend and I’m solely using that so I haven’t touched anything in the sink since last Thursday when I did a full wipe down and washed everything…and guess what? Neither have they, they just continue to pile the dishes up.
I’ve also seen one of them “wash” dishes several times and she just runs water and it switches it around with her hand and then puts it with the clean dishes and knowing that she doesn’t wash her hands that means she’s spreading her feces around all the stuff and then putting it with clean dishes, nothing they eat out of is sanitary.
One of them has hair that sheds so much I’m surprised she has any left on her head and she leaves it everywhere!! On the bathroom sink in the shower on the kitchen counters. I even found several strands in the refrigerator which by the way I also deep cleaned because I didn’t feel comfortable, putting my food in there at the state that it was in. Old food, spills everywhere the kitchen rugs hadn’t been cleaned in God knows how long… I washed them. I swept and mopped the living room floor and I continue to do that. One of them in particular has seen me cleaning and has not offered to help.
And I don’t wanna give too much away because I think it’ll be really easy if one of them ever comes across this thread to know who I am, but there’s an animal in the house and she lets the animal do its business wherever it wants I found it in the kitchen sink and that’s what prompted me to get my own utensils and decided to never use the sink again. They’re absolutely filthy people and I know that everyone wasn’t raised with the same standard of cleanliness and maybe mine is even above and beyond, but I’ve just never lived in such filth.
The thing is, we already had a conversation about cleaning schedules when I first moved in and they said we all clean up after each other and we’ll take the trash out whenever we see it, but now I’m starting to think “clean up after each other” just means that they want me to clean up after them and I think that’s what they’re used to in a roommate, is them being so dirty that the other person just does it.
Unfortunately for them, I’m very petty and I’m not gonna do it. I will use all my own stuff and never touch theirs and only clean things that we share before I wash another dish for them again so the countdown is on we’ll see how long it takes them to wash the sink out of the pets “business” that was in there.
I absolutely know that at the end of this I won’t be renewing this lease and I’m just going back-and-forth on if I want to live alone next because I don’t think I could do this again. I’m trying to keep the peace for the next 11 months and move on with my life.
Any suggestion on how I do that are much welcome 😅
Also, they’re older than me and in their 30s which I thought was a guaranteed they would be clean people, but I guess that isn’t true

it feels impossible to communicate with my roommates without falling into a sort of parental role where i have to remind them to do everything.
we haven’t been living together long and i’ve already had to remind them multiple times to keep up on their dishes. our sink is a decent size but very shallow, so when there’s a lot of dishes it becomes nearly impossible to use. every time i remind them they’ll go crazy cleaning up for a day and then their efforts will slowly decrease until we’re back where we started. we have a perfectly fine dishwasher, but for some reason they don’t use it despite me reminding them about it as well.
another issue is that they leave a mess behind them
in the kitchen every day. dirty pans will be left on the stovetop, crumbs everywhere, dishes left on the coffee table, etc etc. and they cook A LOT. i wake up to a dirty kitchen, i clean it, i come home to a dirty kitchen, i clean it again, and the cycle repeats itself.
i recently downloaded a roommate app that has a digital chore schedule feature and asked if they all would download it and give it a try since no one kept up with our previous attempt at a chore chart. so far only one person has joined and i’m not optimistic.
i know communication with roommates is essential, but how do i effectively tell them to clean up after themselves without becoming the mom of the household? i can’t force them to adhere to a schedule and i don’t want to constantly send text reminders about things that should be common courtesy…so what do i do? is there even a solution to this?

They don’t do anything, they don’t have any friends, they’re insecure and selfish and I’m so sick of it.
The only people who do anything in this house are me and two other people who are full time students and employees, working up to 60 hours a week.
It is so beyond me as to why they cannot think for a second that that is insane. They can’t even do their own dished all the way, they just do three of their own dishes and leave them on my drying rack for me to put away.
I do their dishes, pick up their shoes, pick up their Halloween decorations they tried to put up but left when they fell down, I spray the house for pests, clean everything top to bottom. In the even that the other two functioning members of society are busy or exhausted, or if I’m busy or exhausted, NOTHING gets done.
They break my things, trash my house, and don’t help anyone with anything. In fact i recently found out one of them is actively being abusive to one of our functioning house members.
They go to school and nothing else, they’re both completely antisocial. Ones monstrously insecure- in the way that makes someone selfish, and the other one is the most selfish and opportunistic person I’ve ever met which is crazy because I’ve known some insane people in my lifetime.
I feel like they ruined my house, ruined my mental health, and ruined my wedding just by making an appearance- well, one of them took longer to get ready than ME at my wedding and had us waiting outside of bars for them so they could take pictures.
It’s a lot. These people should never ever live with other people again, this is insane. We’re adults in our twenties and they can’t even clean up after themselves.
I genuinely don’t understand how these people are cool with themselves. All they care about is looksmaxxing im not fucking joking.
If I didn’t care about my peace and the spiritual integrity of my house I’d just leave it be. I’ve known tweakers with more self respect.
There’s 5 of us, the two functioning members of society, me, and the two that I’m ranting about
Btw I’m talking likes of trash out of two trash cans and a sink full of dishes constantly. The floor is like sandpaper and the walls have smudges all over them. I’ve genuinely seen nicer interiors in the worst trailer parks
