I have seen threads that discuss whether some of the big backgammon platforms have biased dice. I totally get the argument that many, if not most players think that they are better than they actually are, and that many don't understand probability.
That said, I have to say that I think that there is something pretty screwy about the dice rolls that I have seen since I started playing on one of the major platforms a couple of weeks ago.
I am not an especially good player. On a couple of the platforms that I am on I average 60 to 65 percent wins, so winning more than I lose, but not by a huge amount. Yet on this one platform, I am 40 percent wins, at most. But I could easily write that off as maybe I'm just being matched with much better players than on other platforms. The thing is, it looked to me as if I was losing because, no matter how bad my opponent was (and some of them were laughably bad), they would get highly improbable rolls in a sequence that would allow them to win, or I would get highly improbable sequences of rolls that led to my losing. What seemed to happen most often was high numbers of doubles being rolled. So I started keeping track.
I'm posting the records of the two most recent games that I have played, with doubles highlighted (I have eliminated identifying info, but I am the player p...). Normal probability would be that an average of rolls would be one sixth doubles. Yes, of course there can be variations, and though it is unlikely, it would be possible that every roll in a game would be a double. In both of these games, one third of the rolls are doubles, twice what you would normally expect. And these two are only my most recent games. Possible? Of course. Likely? What do you think?
And lest you think I'm being a sore loser, I won one of those last two games because, if you look at it, the last eight rolls in a row are all doubles. Again, possible? Of course. Likely....?
So, to me something weird is going on with the dice rolls on that platform.
I don't trust it to be fair.
