FAQ - Start Here ( WORK IN PROGRESS)

Welcome to r/AutoBodyRepair!

You either came to us for help, or you just started a new job! (Probably idk your story). If you're looking for help on these you came to the right place!

Still a work in progress, we're only really doing this on the side so if you have any unanswered questions leave a comment and I will put in some more work to help answer the question!

Vehicle Damage

  • Scratches ( This is easy)

Ooh, that's a bad scratch, well the first thing you need to check is if it's through the clear coat. Run your nail against it and see if it catches, if it doesn't this'll be easy. If it does get out the buffing wheel.

  • Light Scratch (Photos and maybe a link here)
    • Get yourself a microfiber and some basic compound, apply to paint, and rub until the scratch clears up.
  • Deep Scratch (Photos and a link for sure)

  • Dents ( Ooh it's time to work)

The first question is where is the dent? Middle of the door? No problem. Right on a body line? Good luck. The second question is how large is it? Did it crack the paint?

  • I got this I can do it myself
    • (Links and basic info)
  • Okay it's on a bad spot maybe I should call a professional
    • (Types of pros and super rough pricing)

  • Fender Bender ( Maybe a bit much)

  • Accident ( Talk to a professional)

This is the part where you call your local body shop for a quote, or maybe more like a few body shops.

Industry

  • Detailing ( Welcome to the world of "I can only see scratches now")
  • Painting ( It's hot in here)
  • Body Work ( How is it still not smooth?)
    • Basic Steps to vehicle repair (Still have to make this pretty)
      • Inspection- what you can see Tear down- keep going until you no longer see damage Blueprint- parts to order, damage to repair, does it have to be measured, prescan with a computer Framework- measuring pulling measuring cutting fitting measuring welding measuring again Bodywork- dressing welds, body filler application, seam sealer, primer Paint work- prep sand, clean, tape, paint Reassemble- hope you tagged your bolts, post scan Detail- make it shiney

Please read our rules to avoid post removal. We can't tell you how much a job will cost. We can't tell you if it's totalled. We can tell you what we see is broken and only speculate possible hidden damage. We can help going through written estimates We can give general insight for the overall process if you are unsure of how to proceed with finding and communicating with a collision repair shop.

Please always include year make and model with your post.

If you are attempting or inquiring about a diy repair, don't get mad if a user makes a perceived smart allic comment. You asked for advice, someone gave you an opinion about it.

Update to my previous post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AutoBodyRepair/s/G1iJn0J3fb )
Got some plexiglass and auto glass glue and slapped this together. It ain’t exactly pretty but I think it’s watertight aside from the two holes on the right I still need to seal up. Half ass tried to pull the large dent on the top and it did come out a little bit but I wasn’t using the right tools and decided that whatever I did wouldn’t end up making it better, just messed up differently lol (as many of you suggested would be the case in my original post).

Now she just has a bit more character I guess.

Autobody scam ph # 647-906-6919, Mk AUTOBODY REPAIRS

On Oct 10th/26 I met him for my 2015 Nissan Rogue rear damage at 5970 Mavis Rd. Canadian Tire parking lot.  He told me the Canadian Tire manager knows him and supplies custom-made paint for him.  That could be a lie.

Before we met, he told me he doesn’t like to be rushed; his work will be professional.  I paid him $350 cash.  He told me he would apply two coats of primer and 3 coats of paint

This is what he did. Pulled out dent with screw, applied compound, dry sanded, applied water and degreaser, wet sanded, wiped, applied single coat of primer, single coat of paint and clear coat, all in done in 40 mins.  I was watching and timing him.

On Oct 11th/26 I messaged him with the pictures that it was not done properly; he told me we’ll meet up next weekend.  I called him on Oct 15th/26 he told me his busy, will meet during the weekday.

I called him on Oct 18th and Oct 20th and left you a voicemail; he didn’t return my call.  He has time to repost his Kijiji ads and take more customers, but not to finish work on my car.

I have taken screenshots of his calls and sms.

I also met Canadian Tire manager Earl and told him everything about him; the manager and staff around him were shocked.  There were a few customers around; they also overheard our conversation.  The manager told me they don’t sell custom-made paint to any autobody shops or the public.  He took his name down, saw our messages, and took a picture of the work he did on my car.  He informed me he won’t let anyone do bodywork in the parking lot, and police will be called if he continues to do that.  I also visited Peel Regional Police - 21 Division and informed them everything as well.  They have advised me to call them immediately if he starts threatening, harassing, or using profanity.

If he was using the right paint code, why didn't he give me the leftover?

RUST 2013 Toyota 4runner. Been told this is a huge deal and the car will soon be irreparable. Any advice for someone with very low income?

Hello,

I'm sorry if anything is confusing, I don't know anything about cars and I'm trying my best.

My mother is struggling at the moment financially and doesn't have much money for repairs and we aren't sure what to do as this car is a huge lifeline for her.

She has a 2013 Toyota 4runner and has been told by two different people that this rusting issue here is going to get worse very soon and that once a hole forms between the windshield and the outside that it will be irreparable and the car will pretty much be totaled.

She is really struggling financially at this time and I have no idea what to expect. I suppose I was hoping if anyone could confirm that this is a serious issue and can shed some light on how big of a repair this is and also if there are any preventative measures that are cheaper that can be taken until we have enough money for a full fix.

Thank you guys for any help or advice you can give, it's really appreciated a lot!!

RUST Celica ST162 rust on lower fenders

Same on both sides, with the same kind of rust in the same spot.

Back in April, I was quoted €300 (€150 each side) and told it was neither urgent nor a structurally important and that I could wait until the next inspection to get it fixed.

But now it's impossible to get an appointment with them, and I'm wondering if it really was as non-urgent as they said... I can still jack it up from the jack points without any flex or cracking noises.

It's making me uneasy because rust is the only thing I have no experience with. I've lived in a dry, rust-free place and moved somewhere snowy where they salt the roads a lot in winter (I don't drive it in winter anyway).

So I was wondering how screwed I really am. It's the only place I've found rust, for what it's worth.

Thanks in advance!

Is this repairable with PDR

So this car has been in an accident, bought it rebuilt, was hit somewhere front passenger and dinged the bottoms of the door up, after washing the car, polishing it, I started noticing these lines, is this fixable with PDR? Was this Bondoed or something? I've never seen such straight lines all across the door like this. Attaching images of it at auction. I got this car at a great deal so couldn't pass it up but this does bother me looking at it. Not sure if it would be cheaper to PDR or sand down and resmooth and paint.

Popping the LEXUS TX rear bumper back in?

My wife didn’t back into the new garage and had the garage door come down on the hatch and bumper. I got the paint and scratches out, but I am not sure how to get the top of the bumper back into the clips. Do the burnper clips go over or under the body clips?
Thanks.
