RIP RIP Buffy, my sweet Buff Buff girl

On Thursday evening, Buffy (9) was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer, after a day of very atypical behavior (would not come downstairs, wouldn’t eat or go outside, and eventually could not walk). The emergency vet was able to remove the blood around her heart so she was back to eating and walking, but we decided to move forward with euthanasia because we didn’t want her to experience any more pain. On Saturday morning, Buffy passed away peacefully on her bed in our living room, surrounded by me, my husband and our toddler, after a large meal of steak, eggs and blueberry muffins.

I adopted Buffy in 2019 from some random lady off Craigslist. I knew she was sketch but Buffy was beautiful and very sweet. The only picture posted was Buffy doing the heeler sit, leaning up against a door frame. Turns out Buffy had heartworms and was aggressive towards men and other dogs. Unfortunately, I think her first two years of life were very hard on her, but she made great progress with patience and medical care.

Although she was mixed with lab, Buffy embodied all the blue heeler stereotypes. She was the master of the side eye and the heeler sit. She had a very high prey drive- she once killed a pigeon on the sidewalk, I’ll never forget the look in the pigeon’s eyes. She was obsessed with me, she would have preferred that we shared skin. She barked at every dog and bicycle we passed. She had a great disdain for men in baseball caps and hated (loved?) cats and squirrels. If we came across a tennis ball on a walk, she picked it up, then promptly turned around to head back home. She was very protective of me and always waiting behind any closed door, or nudging it open to check on me. She barked incessantly at any body of water. She also whined incessantly when we were eating. She loved walking the trails, sniffing out other wildlife.

Buffy walked alongside me through many phases of life, multiple boyfriends, 4 residences, an engagement, marriage and 2 children. I was worried about bringing a baby into her house, but by giving her plenty of space and forcing boundaries, she warmed up and tolerated them. I know she knew they were an extension of me.

Now that she has passed, I have a lot of guilt about the last couple years of her life. Just how dramatically it changed and how much less time and energy I had for her. Also how much she overstimulated me. Owning a dog on top of having children, it was tough for me. I also feel guilty that I now don’t have to worry about her barking waking the girls up. She would often go upstairs before me when she was ready for bed. I always let her sleep on the bed if she wanted to, because I felt so bad for her. I hope she knew that I loved her so much, how sorry I am and how much I miss opening the door and seeing her there, waiting for me.

RIP Buffy, 2017-2026

Behavior Help with excessive barking at herding ball toy

Post image
200 Upvotes

My boy loves his herding ball but barks very loudly constantly when playing with it. It’s not just a growl or little bark it is an ear piercing bark that echoes through the neighborhood. I can’t imagine my neighbors enjoy hearing it and I feel bad letting him do it.

Has anyone had a similar issue and been able to stop it? Overall he doesn’t bark a lot but is non stop when playing with the ball. It sucks because I would love to let him play all day with it but don’t want my neighbors to hate me. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Edit: God damn people are brutal in this sub

Maizie here without fail always leaves her bone standing on end before she falls asleep by the fire. Watching her do it looks so intentional. Whenever she gets a new one I make sure to pick out one that’s cut so it can be stood up.

I know she’s not the only one with something like this. What does yours do?

Behavior Meeting and reacting to new people

Post image

I rescued my 1.5 year old dog 2 months ago and things have been going so well for the most part, he is labeled a corgi mix but the shelter told us he probably has cattle dog in him and other breeds as well (I think less corgi then cattle dog/ other breeds since he has long legs). Since adopting him I joined this group and have learned so much about the breed and how to work with and train him. He is such a quick learner and so curious about everything, he was only at the shelter for about 5 days before we adopted him so the shelter didn’t have to much information on some behaviors. He was in a family for 7 months with a senior dog, which I think helped his house training a lot since he is so gentle with our belongings and only plays with his toys. We have had good interactions with dogs though a fence and in yards on our walks, he only starts barking and crying when he realizes he can’t go meet them. People though, this is where are issues are. He is so curious to go up to people and meet them, when he met my parents he would sniff them maybe a lick and then would try to snap at them. He has never snapped at me or my fiancé (unless he’s sleepy and cranky at night but then he puts himself to bed) even when we met him at the shelter, he hid under our legs when the shelter workers tried to put a collar on him and he didn’t like how they were touching him. We want to work on his reaction to people but are not sure where to start, when he met my parents he was mostly ok but would snap at them after they gave him a treat. He was ok when we put him on a leash inside, he would just lay with us and if the people ignore him he didn’t pay attention to them. Does anyone have training tips on how to help this reaction? Maybe some tips on how to correct this as well so he knows this is not the correct reaction? I know he may not be a real people person but we need him to be ok with people so if we need to board him there are no issues. I had the idea of when introducing him to people start through a fence or have the person wear a glove (we would practice this at home first so he is used to it) so at least the person wouldn’t get hurt if he did try to snap. Thank you in advance!!!

Nutrition What do y'all think of this?

It's for Cerberus! I like the pure balance cans kinda. Just hate one ingredient. This seems better quality with the first 5 ingredients being meat. There's no peas and no chicken and nothing that could trigger him.

This is a mix in not main food.

Some things I DON'T like tho: cranberries, blueberries, and pumpkin are past the salt which means they basically have none in there. This is usually a trick to make the food seem better ingredient wise. I only look at ingredients to make sure certain ones aren't hiding because Cerbi can't have every food. This is clear.
