Does this look like any of the names?

I had a test for ASL 3, and I couldn't figure out what name they were signing for this part. It doesn't look like any of the options provided. I submitted the test already, so it's not cheating I hope? I thought it was Jane.

hi guys! I am currently in ASL 1A and learning to sign, I cannot figure out the sentence(s) this lady is signing and I have no idea how to figure it out. I’m not sure if I have learned the words or not but I feel like I’ve never seen them before, and I want to continue learning but cannot if I don’t have this assignment submitted-i am not asking for the direct answer, but instead some help on how to figure it out. I know she is signing “I like …” and “I don’t like …”, but I don’t know what comes afterward. thank you for reading and happy learning to everyone! :))

Help! Health issues, pets and signing

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I am a hearing person who has been learning ASL for some years now, and honestly for regular day to day conversations I often prefer to sign rather than speak. (The act of using my voice can worsen my health issues, hence I prefer ASL because it doesn't hurt my body.)

I also am a new pet owner (dog!) and I both sign and speak to my dog. If it is a speaking day I will sim-com. If I am in a day I prefer to sign, I get her attention by saying her name and then once she looks at me I will exclusively sign ASL.

The issue is on days my health issues flare up... where talking becomes VERY uncomfortable for my body. I want to get my dog's attention without having to speak, and to also recognize her name said in a non-verbalized way.

Issue is:

(1) I cannot think of any non-verbal sounds that would be specific for my dog and dog only (almost like a name) so she wouldn't get confused if I am addressing her or something else. (For example, I whistle at her to get her attention... but I also whistle while I cook for my own enjoyment, so that sound not reserved just for her. I can clap... but only when both hands are available, and I clap unironically in conversations sometimes. I cannot snap my finger without nerve pain).
(2) The only alternative I can think of would be somehow getting my dog a sign name. Obviously I cannot give her one. So a Deaf person would need to give my dog one, and I would need to ask them if they would be willing to help and explain why I am asking them in the first place. However I am not allowed to bring my dog to where the Deaf events in my area are hosted. And, I moved away from where I met my first few Deaf friends so they would only see my dog in the monthly facetime, so they wouldn't really get to know her well, so they may not be able to help me here. And is it appropriate to ask for a sign name I can use for my dog, anyways?

Any tips ideas suggestions recommendations, I welcome 🤗

Interest Students and interpreters: what's the hardest part of voicing someone else's signing?

I'm Deaf, and every episode of my review series is voiced by an interpreter. This week's episode is about Voxally, a marketplace app where interpreters claim Deaf creators' signed videos and voice them for social media.

Something I've learned the hard way: the interpreter you need and the next available one are not always the same. I've had both. A good voice keeps my tone and lands my jokes. A rushed one turns me into a different person.

For the students here: if you were handed a Deaf creator's video to voice, what part would worry you most? Register, humor, names, speed?

Disclosure: my episode. Not sponsored. I booked this episode's voice through Voxally, paid by myself.

Interpretation What do you think about the sign for “insecure” being “NOT TRUST?”

I feel like insecure and not having trust are two different things. You can still trust your partner and be insecure. So how do you communicate the sign insecurity without that misunderstanding?

I want to learn ASL

I want to learn ASL (American Sign Language) and I also want to get a certificate. Ultimately, while learning it, I need a certificate that I can use in the future to officially prove in official institutions or workplaces that I know this language. Which online courses can I take for this, and what steps should I follow

Hey everyone! I’ve seen a few comments about why fingerspelling looks different in conversation than when you’re learning the alphabet, so I wanted to share this explanation.

Students who think ASL is just fun

• Upvotes

I have several ASL 1 students who, due their maturity level, don't fully understand that ASL is deaf people's language and that hearing people are guests. They think they can do whatever gesture is "close enough" because it doesn't matter.

How, and are they worth, explaining to?

Help! Trying to find a Deaf Comedian I forgot the name of!

I remember his sign name, but I don't remember his name spelled out. His sign name is the sign for “where” but with the “R” hand shape.

He’d tell stories about growing up in a deaf residential school and pranking the hearing teachers. There was a part of the story where he tries to hide behind a door, but he's found by one of the teachers because he didn’t realize his heavy breathing made enough noise to give him away.

He also did fingerspelling stories. I remember one where he's up on stage and he asks the audience to give him a word to make a story out of. Someone in the audience gives him the word “vampire” and he makes a short story using the handshapes for each letter of the word.

I loved this guy's standup performances and wanted to share them with my new ASL class, but for the life of me I can't find him. Can someone help me find this guy?

Interpretation Hiring interpreter for animation?

There is a musical that I want to animate and I want the characters to sign, but I don't know if there's any specific interpreter site or type of interpreter to look for?

What I want is to send the song/songs(there's 3 hours of the songs so not all at once) to an interpreter and then have them send me a video of them signing the song, preferably from at least 3 angles(front and 3/4 either side). I don't know how long that would take, but I've seen per hour rates from 40-80 bucks.

Any idea on how long it would take, and where to look? Or if an hourly interpreter is correct for this project since their jobs are for in person stuff.

Someone said that music lyrics are hard to translate, could I just send them the parts where characters are talking/singing? Another note is that a lot of the songs are narration, like hadestown 'He could not see the storm coming' kind of stuff. So I guess I would just need the dialogue and not the whole song.
