Looking For Help a tech dumbass?

So I, erm, have this friend, see? He's a complete idiot wrt tech stuff but wants someone local to Northeast to help him set up a home server and show him how to use it without burning his house down. "He" would pay for the help.

Server would be used for data/photo backup (including from multiple iphones), Smart home integration and Jellyfin/MakeMKV. The idea is to stop paying the oligarchs their subscription fees.

Any recommendations? TIA.

Where can I find savory THC edibles? I devoured Laurie+Maryjane Cheese Crisps (think Parmesan shortbread) back in the day and then they disappeared. It was so cool to drink wine and have some good cheese and "the crackers". Whatcha got?

Looking For Best burger spot in SE/Portland for my partner’s 38th birthday?

Hi Portland,

My partner is turning 38 in November and his absolute favorite food is burgers. I’m a burrito guy so I’ve got myself covered, but I want to take him somewhere great for a memorable burger and tasty sides for his birthday.

We live in Buckman and will have a small group of us hungry guys—we aren’t looking for anywhere too fancy. I’m sober (happy with an iced tea or coffee), but he loves a good beer or cider. He generally prefers classic, hearty burgers without anything too wild—historically, he goes for combinations with bacon, blue cheese, mushrooms, or crisp onions.

I’d appreciate any ideas you have! My partner is the nicest guy, works his tush off for Portland Public Schools keeping Grant High School clean, and really deserves a big, tasty burger for his born day.

Thanks in advance!

Looking For Tips for Blue/Red MAX shuttle delays?

Since moving to Portland, the Blue/Red MAX lines have been extremely reliable to get me to Beaverton from Goose Hollow, which allows me to connect to the WES to Wilsonville.

The 26 closure this morning combined with the MAX power outage turned what is usually a 15 min train ride into a nightmarish 2 hour bus ride, just to get from Goose Hollow to Beaverton. By the time I got there, the last AM WES train had departed already and my only option left to go in the direction of the SMART network was the 76. On my way home now it looks like 26 is open but MAX at Sunset TC is still experiencing a power outage.

Any recommendations on how to better get around this mess when it happens? It took me 4 hours to get to work this morning, 2.5 of those hours just accounting for the shuttle bus fiasco to travel 3 stops. I would never willingly get in the shuttle bus towards Beaverton ever again, as the Washington Park stop seems to have exacerbated the amount of traffic on the route. I’m not sure if the shuttle could be just as bad on my way home now, and whether the 19 would be any better or if I should just uber from Beaverton.

If I had called an uber from Goose Hollow, I’m not sure how I would’ve directed them to ensure they avoid the jam caused by the 26 closure, and it would be great if there was a solution that didn’t involve an uber. A personal vehicle is not the solution I’m looking for here, but any other suggestions are welcome!

I thought they had some sort of classes or something about things like being a projectionist or something. I’m sort of interested in what it would take to start my own second run theater but I have zero experience. Any info would be appreciated!

Looking For Anyone else get their windshields cracked last night on HWY 26 around 9:30pm?

So to add some context, last night, my sister and I were making our way into Portland from Beaverton around 9/9:30pm when suddenly there was a Loud boom and a huge crater developed in the glass. I didn’t see anything coming towards me nor did I see the object make an impact to the glass. Shortly after this, I pulled over several hundred yards from where it occurred to check out the damage, and at the time, other cars were pulled over as well but, well behind me. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but now with the news of the closure and this occurring after the 217 exit but before the Sylvan exit, it now has me wondering if instead of a rock or whatever it could have been something electric? Reason I say that is because I rechecked the damage this morning in the daylight I noticed that not only were there the cracks but also what seems to be deep scratches in a uniform shape - not at all cracks but actual scratches. Which is not at all typical from what I’ve experienced with other types rocks or debris hitting my windshield. Keep in mind, this is a brand new vehicle, 2026. I am making this post to see if anyone else has this occur to them. My running theory is that I must have run over a power line or cord or something electrical must have caused the damage. I’m waiting to submit anything to insurance just yet because if other people experienced the same thing last night. I’m gonna try to post pictures of the damage - I also have pictures of a prior time my windshield made contact with a chunk of snow a few years ago.
Thanks!

TL;DR:
I suspect that my vehicle must have made some sort of contact with something electrical last night and want to know if anyone got their windshields cracked last night (October 27 26 around 9:30pm)

Edit: spelling

Edit 2:
Here are some pictures - the oddest thing to me is those scratches are in a perfect line. The picture with the flash on was taken shortly after it happened, and the scratches are very pronounced. Additionally, if you look at the “impact” site, there’s a deep dent on the frame of the vehicle - and if you look closely at the one taken at night, you can see that there’s almost like a splatter of white and red paint. Which is why I’m skeptical that it was a rock or something. And something of that size i would have at least seen as it impacted the windshield but I didn’t see anything at all.

Looking For Grateful Dead-loving Portlanders, want to meet up?

This Friday night, October 30, I'm heading out to see Steely Dead, a musical fusion of the Grateful Dead and Steely Dan, at The Get Down. Want to go and meet up? I attend live shows every now and then, but usually on my own since hardly anyone in my immediate circle shares an interest in anything Dead-related. I'm a 54 year old married guy, just looking for a few new friends.

Looking For Where to sell my comic book collection?

I’m looking to sell my comic books but they’re mostly underground/alternative stuff and I wasn’t sure if some stores are more interested in superhero stuff. My collection consists of a lot of first pressing Zap Comix and Heavy Metal magazines, etc. Anyone have any suggestions for stores that might be interested in this kind of material? (Also I’m looking to get cash rather than store credit and I’m not worried if I don’t receive a lot for it, just looking to give it away for a little money). I appreciate the help! :)

Looking For How long has Veronica's Salsa been a brand?

I looked it up and it says it was registered only in 2021 but I could swear it's been longer than that. Also, my current smaller (16 oz) tub says it's a Reser's Fine Foods brand*, but I went to the Reser's website and it doesn't seem to be listed among their Mexican product category. Super weird. They had other salsas listed, though. *did it belong to an independent outfit before, maybe, that got bought out? Currently I can't seem to find the Picante variety in the larger 24 oz tub, the last two times I went to Freddy's.

Looking For What is something you wish you knew about moving to Portland?

My fiance and I are making a much anticipated move to Portland in the next couple of months. It feels like it will be a giant step up from where we currently live (Reno).

What should I know about moving to the area?

We plan on renting (preferably a house) before settling on a neighborhood that we like and then buying.

Looking For Where do new moms hang?

I don't post too much on reddit so I'm hoping this is received okay. I'm looking for fellow moms! I know the obvious answer is we're all at home, but I'm the first one in my circle here in Portland to have a baby, and I'd like to make mom friends.

I'm also hoping to find other moms who are not white. Absolutely wanting mom friends of all kinds and colors, but it would be nice to not feel alone. My baby is three months, almost four, fyi. I'm no longer on maternity leave, so that rules out a lot of mom groups and baby events I'm seeing that meet in the mornings.

Love,

A tired new mom who's trying to build intentional community despite also just wanting to go back to bed.
