Seeking resources and other sponsors interested in I-864 reform after fraud or identity theft.

Title: My sponsored spouse stole my identity and now seeks I-864 support. How can I advocate for reform?
I’m a U.S. citizen who sponsored my spouse in good faith. Several years into our marriage, she defrauded me and stole my identity. I sued her in a civil case. She also currently faces felony charges, which are pending—not convictions.
She is now seeking financial support from me under the I-864 Affidavit of Support. It is devastating to seek accountability for the harm someone caused while also facing their demand that you financially support them.
I understand that sponsorship carries serious responsibilities. But I believe there should be a meaningful legal protection for sponsors when the person seeking support has committed serious crimes against them, including identity theft or financial fraud.
The reform I want to advocate for is a way to bar I-864 recovery when serious wrongdoing against the sponsor is established through a fair legal process. I’m looking for help understanding how that protection could be written into law.
I’ve written hundreds of letters seeking help and bringing attention to this issue, with very little response. I haven’t stopped, but I need a more effective path forward.
Does anyone know:
Attorneys or legal organizations experienced with I-864 civil cases involving fraud or crimes against the sponsor?
Advocacy groups or other sponsors working toward legislative reform?
Congressional offices or committees that would consider a specific reform proposal?
How to organize affected sponsors and turn these experiences into meaningful legislative action?
I’m keeping identifying information and case details private. I’m sharing my experience, and I recognize that pending charges do not establish guilt.
My concern is accountability for individual wrongdoing and a fair process for sponsors who have been harmed. Any concrete resources or firsthand experiences would be appreciated.

First OWI in Wisconsin - L1-B Visa Holder - Looking for Advice

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for advice and support because I'm honestly feeling desperate right now.

I'm a Brazilian citizen living and working in Wisconsin under an L1-B work visa.

A few days ago, I made the mistake of driving after drinking. I was returning home in a rental car when an animal crossed the road. I swerved to avoid it and hit a curb. There was no collision with any other vehicle or person, and nobody was injured.

The police arrived, and I was arrested after a breath test investigation.

On the way to the station/hospital, I refused the blood test because English is my second language and I genuinely did not fully understand what was being explained to me at the time. After I realized what was happening, I agreed to the blood draw, and I was taken to the hospital where a blood sample was collected anyway.

I have already filed a petition in Municipal Court to challenge/revoke the refusal, since I understood there was a 10-day deadline to do so.

What is making me panic now is that I have already received an email from the Brazilian Consulate informing me that my U.S. visa has been revoked. They informed me that I may remain in the United States until the expiration date on my I-94, but I cannot leave and re-enter the country using that visa.

Has anyone gone through something similar?

  • First OWI.
  • No prior criminal history.
  • No injuries.
  • No third parties involved.
  • Work visa (L1-B).
  • Visa already revoked.

I'm especially interested in hearing from anyone who has dealt with immigration consequences after a first OWI/DUI.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Marriage Timeline Advice

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend and I are pretty much decided on getting married next year. I live in Northern California while he lives in Mexico and we are ready to be done with the distance. That being said, I know we have a huge battle to tackle when it comes to filing papers for him here in the United States.

I have already kind of accepted that I will most likely have to live in Mexico while we figure things out. But on the other hand, I have no idea what we're facing. All the information I have come across just makes me more and more confused. I wanted to ask you all if you had any advice. I know talking to an immigration lawyer is probably the best at this point however I want to be prepared to ask the right questions.

Is the K-1 Visa route the fastest? We were thinking of getting married then filing for a spousal visa however I've seen some people say that's an awful idea. Please help.

Thank you in advance.

My husband is in ICE custody. Merits hearing Nov 2nd. Should we file for bond?

My husband has been detained by ICE since June 25, 2026, and his individual merits hearing is scheduled for November 2.
He originally entered the United States legally with a visa and overstayed. I am a U.S. citizen, and we got married on August 26, 2026, while he was detained.
Current applications:
EOIR-42B (Cancellation of Removal) — filed with immigration court
I-589 (Asylum) — filed with immigration court
I-130 (Marriage-based petition) — pending with USCIS
I-485 (Adjustment of Status) — not filed
With his merits hearing only days away, is it even worth paying an attorney to request a bond hearing now, or would it make more sense to wait until after November 2?
If the judge approves one of his applications, would requesting bond have been unnecessary? If the judge denies his applications and we appeal to the BIA, could he still request bond while the appeal is pending?
I’m also concerned about the I-485. Our paralegal says we can wait until after the merits hearing to file it with USCIS. Is that actually advisable when his I-130 is still pending? Should we be requesting a continuance instead?
We’re already spending a significant amount on legal representation, and I feel like we’re making decisions without understanding the consequences.
I would really appreciate advice from immigration attorneys or anyone who has gone through something similar, especially regarding bond hearings, appeals, and adjustment of status during removal proceedings.
Thank you to anyone who takes the time to respond.

Help me please 🙏🏻

Hi everyone,
I’m posting on behalf of a friend whose wife is a U.S. Green Card holder (lawful permanent resident). She filed an I-130 petition for her husband, who lives in Iraq, in July 2023.
As of now, they have not received an approval for the I-130 petition and are still waiting for an update.
Is anyone else in a similar situation, especially those who filed for a spouse in July 2023 or around that time?
If your petitioner is a Green Card holder and your spouse is in Iraq, could you please share your timeline?
When did you file your I-130?
Has your petition been approved yet?
Which USCIS service center is processing your case?
Have you received any updates or requests for additional evidence?
We would really appreciate hearing from anyone with a similar case. We’re trying to understand whether this waiting time is normal or if there might be an issue with the petition.
Thank you!
