Physician Responded My gut says something is not right
TLDR: (Almost) 4 year old boy sick for 7 days. Symptoms are changing rather than reducing. Wondering if it could be walking pneumonia with MIRM. I can't shake the feeling that something isn't right or typical about this.
For context, I was the first one to catch this and was absoloutely flattened by it. My symptoms (with the exception of the skin stuff) have been parallel to my son's, and I am also still sick (day 9 for me), but everyone else recovered fine after their fever broke or barely had symptoms at all. My grandparents, whom we saw, were quite sick after returning from Mexico, so there might be something there. But whereas I might expect to see us bouncing back at this point, my son is instead looking really sick in my opinion, and I'm worried about how poorly he seems to be recovering.
His timeline is as follows:
Day 1-2: congestion and runny nose
Day 3: headache, mild and very brief fever, sore throat, dry coughing at night, lost voice, very low stamina and energy
Day 4: feeling better with fever broken but other symptoms continued
Day 5: very short bursts of energy, continued low stamina, rash on lip and cheek appear simultaneously together within a few hours. Hoarseness and sore throat are improving, cough is getting worse (still dry, now also occuring during the day and more often at night, waking him).
Day 6: continued symptoms. Super congested and very runny nose (worse than early days). Check inside mouth and find 1 sore (red in center, thin white outer ridge, rather big). Nothing else notable inside mouth.
Day 7: rash on other cheek appears, still low stamina, clearly not feeling well despite some improvement in mood. I now count 5 sores on one side (he will not show me the other side). They do not look like the examples I see online for parvovirus, herpes gingivitis (?) or hands, foot and mouth disease. Top lip is still red, cracked and blistery despite daily moisturizing (unscented, pure Tallow.) Lips in general are not dry, just very irritated and painful.
A doctor today suggested it was probably viral but did not seem confident. She dismissed pneumonia due to clear lung sounds but I have since learned walking pneumonia can sound clear. I am wondering if it could be that with MIRM. My son may be immuncompromised as I am but is still too young to do testing to confirm a diagnosis. To make matters worse, he has recently lost weight due to not meeting his nutritional needs because of severe ARFID, which is another reason I am quite concerned about his recovery.
He is autistic and has low interoceptive awareness and functional speech, making it difficult to rely on outward mood or get answers from him on how he's feeling.
Am I being paranoid? I just feel like the progression of symptoms is off, especially considering I too am not getting much better (I actually think it has also moved into my chest). My poor son looks glassy eyed and is beginning to have redness under his eyes, is blistering, really tired, etc and has not been to daycare in a week. I can't imagine how much this will take out of him if it goes much longer.
Any help is really appreciated, thank you!
