"She's my beard now"

Tobias slowly looks at Gob

I'm 3 episodes in and already sad it's almost over. Feels so good to see everyone back together

111

u/NEKKID_GRAMMAW May 30 '18

The beard joke was funny but Tobias' reaction, that was gold.

10

u/Waterknight94 May 31 '18

I had laughed already in the first two episodes at some things, but Tobias reacting to that line was the best.

118

u/sunzusunzusunzusunzu May 29 '18

Tobias is the ONLY one that we see react to that...

71

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

First time I laughed out loud this season was that joke

20

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

I don't think I've ever laughed so hard since the end of season 3. So good to be back!

5

u/renzollo May 31 '18

This was the first moment it really felt like Arrested Development since the end of S3

-10

u/eunderscore May 29 '18

It was kinda funny but felt like a forced gag. Gob's whole sexuality story feels badly handled and stuck in the past.

24

u/GuyFawkes99 May 30 '18

I love it. His desperate flailing need to be accepted, understood and loved, coupled with his inability to be honest about that need … fucking dark.

-7

u/eunderscore May 30 '18

There is that. AD I think has always treated being gay as being in some way off if not lesser, which I don't think will be its friend in time. It treads the line by being about a person's own issues rather than being gay as a thing specifically, but it's certainly used as a comedic device which is something mostly everything else has left behind.

22

u/Maria_LaGuerta May 30 '18

I wouldn't want to live in a world where jokes like this are unacceptable and I'm actually gay. The joke refers to gobs own homophobia, not the writers. I can't think of a single time the joke has been gays are lesser people.

21

u/[deleted] May 30 '18

Hm. I guess I can agree in some cases, but the reason why the gay thing works here so much is bc of how hard Gob is trying to overcompensate. It happens in real life. As someone who was closeted for a very long time, I relate to this and I think it's very sweet and funny, honestly. Not offensive at all to me, but I'm sure others could take it differently.

6

u/GuyFawkes99 May 30 '18

I agree with you. Lots of jokes about transsexuals and gays, always on the line of whether the joke is that he’s gay or whether he’s deluded. The truth is it’s both. The guys who write this show are in their late 50s. They’re not the most progressive people on earth. They’re trying to grow like the rest of us.

0

u/[deleted] May 30 '18

68

u/chriswizardhippie May 30 '18

A beard is what homosexual men who are in the closet call the women they date.

37

u/creiss74 May 31 '18

And her last name is Beard since she was married to John Beard.

She's his Beard now.

31

u/chriswizardhippie May 31 '18

And used her hair as a literal beard. Joke has layers

148

u/NapsAndNetflix May 29 '18

oh shit, wasn't expecting the Kyle Mooney cameo

38

u/anklis May 29 '18

Now 2/3 of good neighbor have been on

12

u/FakingHappiness513 May 30 '18 edited May 30 '18

Who else has been on it?

Edit:Forgot about Beck

2

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '18

When was Beck on?

0

u/[deleted] May 30 '18

2

u/anklis May 30 '18

He had a very small part in brigsby bear, so he could possibly make an appearance

349

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

Lmao wtf was that action sequence!

30

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

Favorite part of the new season so far I rewinded it a couple times

20

u/sheer_will May 31 '18

I love how long the elevator takes to get there and it opens insanely slow as well. Hilarious.

18

u/meikooooo May 31 '18

Also continuation from the first episode when it slowly closes when Michael is talking to toddler.

0

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

399

u/jwalterleavesnotes May 29 '18

It was Michaels self defense coupled with George michaels Star Wars skills

241

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

The funniest thing I’ve seen in a week.

286

u/impossiblefan May 29 '18

The fact that it came from nowhere and just wasn't mentioned again made it so much funnier tbh.

13

u/[deleted] May 30 '18

Fucking brilliantly built up too. Ahhh I fucking love this show when it's on point

2

u/MGLLN Jun 29 '18

It was really unexpected. Was literally eating something and I started choking/laughing

64

u/UpiedYoutims May 29 '18

They definitely did a few jokes like that that were very different from usual AD jokes. I like it

170

u/bobthefetus May 29 '18

TOTAL REGRESSION!

13

u/GuyFawkes99 May 30 '18

Oh fuck my sides

48

u/lifeofwill May 29 '18

Michael's family safety training coming in handy

1

u/polocolo Jun 11 '18

I screamed when I saw it. I was like "where does that come from?" that's how great the show is. They can still surprise us

70

u/foxh8er May 29 '18

Did they stop bleeping? The bleeps were great!

4

u/GuyFawkes99 May 30 '18

That’s what I thought,but then they bleeped a fuck.

0

u/[deleted] May 30 '18

1

u/GuyFawkes99 Jun 02 '18

I think “fuck” is the only word they’re still bleeping.

80

u/djaeke May 29 '18

No, they were bleeping last episode. Seems like they're doing it when it serves the joke, but skipping it when it doesn't make it funnier or you need to hear specifically what curse they said.

5

u/theoneirologist May 29 '18

Agreed. I don’t get why they bleep some and then don’t. Just messy if you ask me.

72

u/foxh8er May 29 '18

Real shoddy editing. Just pure crap

155

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

It’s like everyone aged up like a Sim in the past few years. Even the anchor went from middle aged man to an old man.

Everyone but Bateman.

56

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

I don’t know what’s wrong with Will Arnett’s face. I know he’s a bit heavier than before obviously but he’s got like a super heavy tan or something, and stubble?

And there’s Jeffrey Tambor starting to look less and less like the family grandfather cause he’s not aging along with everyone else.

0

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

3

u/SugarMyChurros Jun 24 '18

Watching this season, I got the impression that he's on something. Aside from that fact he doesn't look so good, you can see it in his eyes. May not be booze though, pills? At the very least: food.
"Flaked" came out in 2016? He looks dramatically different for such a short time-frame. There were a couple of times during S5 that I thought to myself, "Man, I hope Will Arnett is ok"

109

u/MarkLedger May 29 '18

Cross and Hale look the same

98

u/rainydistress May 29 '18

Hale's face looks a little longer or something and even Bateman's showing signs of aging but Tambor and Cross look the exact same to me. Probably sucking off of Steve Holt's life force

→ More replies (6)

6

u/Colonel_Chestbridge1 May 30 '18

Hale has some grey in his hair now though

24

u/iblameshane May 29 '18

I love that John Beard is working for Wee BBC now. Or, was working for them

1

u/GuyFawkes99 May 30 '18

Don’t sack me!

2

u/meikooooo May 31 '18

I feel like when Michael said something like "has anyone noticed the family isn't quite the same" (can't remember the exact line) it was a meta joke about how they've all aged.

25

u/Thrison May 29 '18

The horrid green screen is back! Portia de Rossi clearly filmed her lines in the family gathering scene in L2's apartment separately from the rest of the cast.

0

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

27

u/Thrison May 29 '18 edited May 29 '18

There was green screen involved, otherwise this shot could not exist: https://i.imgur.com/aPD1ibA.png

There were several shots done like this - but yes, there were other shots that were clearly just filmed at a different time and others that had a stand-in standing behind Lucille with the head conveniently just out of the shot.

Edit: Just pointing out that the comment I replied to was edited while I typed my reply that outright denied green screening was used at all. :)

575

u/idonthavemanyfriend May 29 '18

Tobias falling off chairs and no one acknowledging it was my favourite gag in this episode.

163

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

Really brought me into the classic AD frame of mind each time.

25

u/Jaerivus May 30 '18

...no one acknowledging it was my favourite gag in this episode.

That certainly was funny, and I would have mentioned it had I known.

5

u/fort_wendy Jun 02 '18

It's basic slapstick but I guess I'm a big fan of slapstick. One of my favorite scenes

1

u/jrr6415sun Jun 28 '18

i didn't find it funny

0

u/fede01_8 Jun 12 '18

I don't find physical comedy funny :/

440

u/BoomanShames May 29 '18

had to replay the scene a few times to make sure i heard right but does GM call his dad Darth when he’s in the kitchen with Maebe? “i haven’t even seen my Darth since i hit him”.

208

u/jwalterleavesnotes May 29 '18

And then brings up rebels

134

u/UncleBenjen123 May 30 '18

When he’s giving his online fighting classes “Like if you just found out your Darth Vader figure is dating your girlfriend”

23

u/BoomanShames May 30 '18

hahah i completely missed that; that’s great.

85

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

Yeah he did, it was in the subs.

62

u/Sonicfan42069666 May 29 '18

That line was extra funny to me because "Vader" means father.

5

u/No_Commission Jun 01 '18

That was kinda the joke, right?

2

u/erichayward Jul 02 '18

Yes! It got me thinking about Star Wars references throughout the series, which other, smarter people probably realized ages ago. But for example "Rebel Alley."

1

u/Amanroth87 Oct 17 '18

Rebel alley isnt really a star wars reference. It's a reference to the fact that Ron names all his children after the place they were conceived. This is blatantly stated though. Also Rebel's son is named Lem and Ron Howard shows Michael the LEM which is more subtle.

Rebel's name does come up in reference to star wars, but I don't believe the name itself is a reference to SW.

408

u/thatsinsame May 29 '18

"Then why do i have to fuck my cousin for some meth money, mom?"

24

u/TotaledLips May 30 '18

I loved that line! Taken out of context, it's so fucked up!

584

u/awesometuck1559 May 29 '18

"That would later appear in a Han Solo origin picture."

my fuckin sides

73

u/CardinalNYC May 29 '18 edited May 29 '18

I'll be honest, other than name-dropping the movie, I didn't actually get this joke... and I watched Solo last night. I know Ron Howard directed it but the action on screen in the episode didn't really match with anything in Solo.

82

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

I think he was using Teras Kasi, which is the fighting style Qi'Ra used in Solo

52

u/spore1234 May 29 '18

Ron Howard - the narrator - is also the director of the han solo movie. A very meta joke

→ More replies (11)

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '18

I think it was used by the marauder on the train. GM spins with the sword and then does a spinning kick.

86

u/BRAND_NEW_GUY25 May 29 '18

Was that move actually in the movie? I don't remember it

72

u/rainydistress May 29 '18

Maybe one of Qi'Ra's moves from her martial arts thing that she's a master of or something

4

u/Pickles256 May 30 '18

Probably a cut scene

14

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

I'm not sure they'd even know would they? There's very little time to add that joke in between the release of the film and show

514

u/ShadowShadowed May 29 '18

I'm going in and out of Michael like a cuckoo clock bird.

Never change Tobias.

17

u/threefingersplease May 31 '18

This is my favorite line of the season so far... it's gonna be one of those AD quotes for me... I'm sure of it.

5

u/onimi666 Jun 04 '18

Never change Tobias.

I mean, he has to take those cutoffs off sometime, right? ...Right?

5

u/jaydock Jun 20 '18

At this point I’m starting to genuinely believe he’s just a straight oblivious guy

192

u/[deleted] May 30 '18

is anyone else really into alia shawkat with the gray hair

103

u/GRAIN_DIV_20 May 30 '18

I've been into her boobs since back in the day :P

1

u/jrr6415sun Jun 28 '18

no she's gross

558

u/awesometuck1559 May 29 '18

Another Netflix hallway fight scene.

147

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

If Daredevil was Michael's Son, he would get destroyed in a fight

familydefense

50

u/Rhysieroni May 30 '18

Y'all did that scene actually happen? Lol

18

u/vera214usc May 30 '18

Is that a real thing? I only know about it from Joel McHale.

26

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

Did I miss something there? What was the point of that?

192

u/krazykraz01 May 29 '18

Michael's self-defence lessons from Google kicked in.

→ More replies (8)

4

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '18

That scene was when I knew this season was gonna be great

309

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

Portia’s not in the room is she?

221

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

At least it doesn’t look as bad as that Barry scene in season 4.

38

u/Penguator432 May 29 '18

Which episode/scene? My TV's so old I can't tell good green screen from bad green screen.

→ More replies (5)

71

u/Sonicfan42069666 May 29 '18

I think it looked just as bad, if not worse. By the end of the scene, it actually felt like they were lampshading it with some of the dialogue.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/moosefreak May 30 '18

that barry scene was hilarious idk why everyone hates it. Felt like a gag

91

u/MortonTheBrave May 29 '18 edited May 29 '18

It actually fooled me until her reaction shot when Michael asked about Lucille 2.

28

u/Thrison May 29 '18

I think that was the first green screen shot of that gathering scene. That said, the scenes with Lindsay and George in Mexico was very well done.

→ More replies (2)

57

u/Antivora May 29 '18

Came here to say this, clearly green screen when she has the family in the background and never a full shoot of her together with the rest

10

u/midnightmems May 30 '18

I noticed this too. Why isn’t she with them??

57

u/bshively May 30 '18

Portia de Rossi retired from acting but came back for a smaller role in season 5, which I imagine is why she’s so often on green screens.

→ More replies (6)

148

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

Lmao. Lucille Austero gave them the key to her penthouse.. in 1992.

91

u/seanyo1313 May 29 '18

They had every right

17

u/GuyFawkes99 May 30 '18

I didn’t get that line. The family just trying to be woke or …?

258

u/rajnam May 29 '18

Daddy not horny 😂

32

u/aujthomas May 29 '18

out of curiosity, why we're those red "We're horny?" shirts so pixelized? is there any inside reference that's alluding to or just some weird editing issue? it looks like they digitally drew the shirts onto GOB/Sr. instead of just buying two real shirts and wearing those

33

u/fdg456n May 29 '18

It looks like they pumped up the saturation in post for some reason. In the next scene Lucille is wearing a cardigan the same colour. It must be some sort of symbolic connection.

“It’s probably because I’m younger. A puta.”

9

u/Boinayel8 May 30 '18

I laughed so much at this.

6

u/gude Jun 01 '18

As a Brazilian guy, the amount of puta said in this show makes me laugh like a lunatic

212

u/[deleted] May 29 '18

loving that gob has a Beard beard.

97

u/narmowl May 29 '18

I loved the look Tobias turned and gave him.

136

u/degnor May 29 '18

You caught that too? I think that’s great. Tobias picks up on one single homoerotic double entendre when another character says it.

27

u/GuyFawkes99 May 30 '18

Does John Beard have a job besides cameoing in Arrested Development?

22

u/communistjack May 30 '18

yes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Beard_(news_anchor)

In Buffalo, Beard served as anchor for Channel 2 News Daybreak and Midday on WGRZ. While anchor, WGRZ's morning newscast, Daybreak vaulted into first place in Buffalo's Nielsen ratings.[3] On November 1, 2016 it was announced that John Beard would be leaving WGRZ at the end of the year.[4] Beard ultimately stayed over a year longer, with his final newscast airing January 18, 2018.[5]

62

Yeah, and Lucille 2's name was being replaced by Sally :s

I think the movie that George Michael is watching (that has Rebel Alley in it) is the family movie that Michael was making, but it's been retooled to be about Kitty. The line we hear is "say goodbye to these," which is likely accompanied by Rebel (playing Kitty) showing her breasts (Kitty's classic joke from the original series), which is why GM suddenly misses Rebel. Kitty was left in charge of Michael's movie, which is why it's now about her.
