Question Can't beat AC6 Ayre boss with BASHO frame + LASER LADE. Need build & tactics help. [New Player]
So I started playing AC6 for the first time last Monday (Oct 5th attotp) and I've now gotten to the Ayre boss and I just can't do it.
It doesn't matter what Inner parts I've tried swapping out, a gentle breeze staggers me forever and I always have no energy, meaning no dodging, meaning more staggers. And in terms of the DPS race I always loose, especially in the second half of the fight. Every time I have no repairs left before I even kill its first shield, much less get its health down to 50%. And from my experience Assault Armor & Pulse Shield do absolutely fucking nothing against boss characters.
I couldn't beat Ibus either but considering from my research most players consider Ibus to be the actual hardest boss in the game, so I just used a cheese build to skip it because it's BS and it doesn't matter. Excluding that though I've managed to at least A-Rank all the missions with this build.
But I have to see "my mech" in the ending cutscene, otherwise there's no point in even doing it. I need help & guidance if I'm gonna bother keep playing this game.

What parts of the mech would you say you feel you need to keep? Does it need to stay a double melee BASHO? Can it be a BASHO with any loadout? Can it be any double melee frame? Could it be a BASHO dualtrigger with a melee punish?

u/MaxBlackfinger 14d ago
The only things that matter to me are the BASHO frame & the Vvc-770LB.
It's my main look and the most viable playstyle I'm capable of.
I do double melee to wait out the cooldown.

I would swap the second melee for missiles or a plasma launcher. Also I'd drop the laser blade for the laser lance.
I run a very light build with the 930ish damage plasma rifle, laser lance, and dual missiles. It works extremely well for building stagger and murdering enemies.

Dang. I wanted to give this a shot tonight but it turns out I unistalled it on my steamdeck.
We'll see how long it takes to download on hotel wifi

I keep all my games archived on a SSD for rapid re-installs independent from internet access.
GOG has Offline Backup Installers and I think Steam has a custom download or install repackage'er or something? But I can't remember the last time I used it (years ago, back when Space Engineers didn't have any DLC yet) or how it works or if it even still exists today.

Put a pair of Ransetsu-RFs (specifically RFs, not ARs) in your hands and put the LB in your shoulder weapon bay. (in your hands you could also go with dual etsujins, or an R-RF and a ludlow, or an R-RF and an etsujin. There's a fair amount of other good options, but let's stick with these for now)
Probably swap the laser orbit for like a MLT or SPL missile, but that's not super important. Swap the kikaku booster out for a fluegel or alula, and the generator out for... y'know, I'm not actually sure. Basho is a good core but I don't use it a lot because its generator adjustment stats feel bad to work with. Probably go with yaba, ming-tang, or VP-20C for the generator, maybe hokushi.
Could maybe swap out the FCS? Not really anything wrong with ocellus here, but if you wanted to free up a bit of energy load and make your missile lock speed a bit less bad, abbot's an option. If you're willing to sacrifice a bit more energy load and some of your short range lock speed for a bit more mid range lock speed and actually okay missile lock speed, talbot's another. But missile lock speed generally isn't a huge deal unless you're using a missile with slow base lock speed, and I think the R-RF's the only gun I've mentioned that would care much about mid-range lock speed.
The gameplan is basically just spam your dualtrigger and fire your missiles on lock until she staggers, and then hit her with the charged attack of the laser blade to punish. In principle you should be able to punish every stagger with the heavy attack, but if you're out of position for it it's better to hit with the light attack than whiff with the heavy.
Her melee attacks have bad vertical tracking, so try to stay at a slightly higher or slightly lower altitude than her. When you see a melee coming, fly under or over her. If you're not close enough to cross her up, flying up or dropping down past the swing can also do the trick.

Alright. I just swapped the basho parts on my S-Rank ac and changed the laser Lance out to your sword and SRanked the IBIS and Ayre missions.
So it can definitely be done, dude. You're just gonna need some practice.
I used the Duckett pistols, stun needle launcher, and that 770 sword you like.
Fluegel/21Z booster
IB-C03F: WLT 001 FCS
VP-20D generator
But I don't know if all these parts are available to you yet.

Gatling guns on one or both arms are great since you can completely focus on dodging around her while holding down the fire buttons and do continous damage.
I just beat her yesterday first try even, which surprised me, since i struggled quite with defeating her on my first playthrough. My loadout wasnt even that good, i used the one song bird (which is considered a rather bad weapon), a stun needle, one gatling gun and the laser lance. But after beating her i realized i just constantly dodged, i never stood still always circled around her, abover her and dodged occassionally when she did some melee attacks. I think thats why i beat her first try, simply stay in motion, move around her, dodge around her. I cant be more specific but thats what made me win in think.

u/MaxBlackfinger 14d ago
I wanted to love the Gatlings so bad! But in this game you hold down the trigger for 3 seconds then they overheat for 6. They start doing a bit of damage but then you loose half your health because you can't do anything because you're stuck on cooldown.

u/2D_Ronin 14d ago
Thats only true for the shoulder gatling guns. They kinda suck yea. But the regular ones last very long.

Go for a light weight build and keep up constant pressure with something like the estujins(dual wield) when her posture bar breaks go in with a melee weapon, rinse and repeat. Ive beaten her more than 100 times at this point. It just works

u/MaxBlackfinger 14d ago
What Gen+Boost combo do you use? I never have enough EN to do anything.

If you're not beholden to the whole BASHO set...
Head: VP-44D or VP-44S
Torso: Nachtreiher/Alba/VP-40S
Arms: VP-46D
Legs: Nachtreiher
Booster: ALULA
FCS: TALBOT
Generator: VP-20C
Weapons:
Dual Etsujin or Ludlow
Left shoulder: Melee of choice. I know you want the Vvc-770LB, but the Vvc-774LS laser slicer does better, or even the BU-TT/A. Wait until you break their posture to use the melee.
Right shoulder: BO-044 HUXLEY or 45-091 ORBIT. These will keep the pressure on.
Watch as you run circles around her. The Alula should let you QB at will and the legs make that QB range go even further. This build also works great for Ibis. The following link is my own take.

u/Algester 13d ago
NGI requires you to empty your tank if you can not deal with that I sugges you stick with something much more linient like Yaba or Ming-tang... you may have to ditch the wuerger for something much more practical since now you don't have the EN spec to back up the wuerger

u/Fuzzy_Archer_4891 14d ago
The VP-20C is a good all rounder, and i pair it with the ALULA boosters, look into the nachter frame parts, those are pretty damn speedy

u/Chauve-sourisvampire 14d ago
I suggest swap out the laser blade for the pulse blade; better PA interference and impact, will deal better against Ayre'shield. Get Pulse Armor extension, activate it when you are on verge of being staggered to reset your impact build-up. Not much but it can help.
Maybe consider either a different core or generator setup, with basho core and coral genrator you are getting long energy recovery delays (over 5 sec if you do not redline, and still nearly 4 sec when you redline). Try VP-20D generator and/or CC-3000 Wecker core.

Your weapons are hindering u alot with the basho frame, if ur insisting on using that frame then work ur internals so u have the most energy regeneration an not so much high energy level, high energy level usually means longer redline when u fully run out, thats step one.
Step two, LEARN ENERGY MANAGEMENT!! This should be automatic for any build, but if u intentionally using a nerfed build then u got to get good with running that build an not redline. Its hard to get high energy regeneration with this frame even with the best combo of internals, so u got to use what u have the most efficient u can. Ur weapons will also have some play on ur energy regeneration depending on ur type, which leaps me to the last step
Step three... get rid of the giant lance! Its good but not on a build thats thirsty for energy. The weight an the energy it takes is high for the basho frame, pairing that with the laser shot gun takes alot of energy an down time on ur damage output. I love that shotgun but its better used as a combo ender after ur main melee, bc rhe charge attack is so fast or its used as a quick hit to finish a stun so u can punish it. If u want to use that laser shot gun an the laser blade u have on ur left hand, put both in ur shoulder slot, an use maybe the handguns dual wielding or ludlows as ur main hands to help build stun, u can use a regular shot gun to but the extra weigh could be a hinder ur energy.
I run mostly melee focused builds thats light weight an high energy regen, an i tend to use that laser shotgun alot, but i also did alot of build videos an weapon combos against Rusty in the area, that u can take a look at yo get an idea of what im talking about an see if u can find something that suits u.
As a matter of fact I haven't done a training video with Rusty in q long time! Ill do one with the basho frame an see if I can figure a set up that works an ill tag u in it if thats cool?

I think if you swap out your booster to Alula you can probably do it with your build. Also, swap to Talbot for FCS. It’s not too hungry on EN and gives you a decent close to mid range.
Ideally, you’re going to get the shield down, then punish with your heaviest melee attack.
Thats pretty much it. Spend a couple of rounds just dodging her attacks, you’ll learn most patterns.
Then once you’re comfortable, do the same again, this time shooting.
I’ve no hit the whole game with one AC and got vids for everything, so if you need help just let me know and I’ll drop a link for you.
Good luck! You got this!

Lower your weight further and increase your speed. Try the laser dagger or an empty fist as they are way lighter and you can as you can use them way more often. the empty fist can be used in your off hand too.
As for a booster change, if you want to change the booster, you might like the flugel, which isn't as optimised for melee as the kikaku, but has other stats that make up for it. I forget if one of those is thrust.
The YABA generator acts like a Coral generator, and is insanely lighter. You should try that one out too.
You also don't have a core expansion. Which is probably going to hurt you, you can use pulse armour to clear your stagger.

Try something like this. I kept the shoulders empty because I think others will suggest other things.

What helped me was staying with the back at the edge of the arena, so she can't teleport behind you easly. Then shot down her shield with bazookas or shotguns after her attacks, when she stands still for a moment. Then when her shield is down, blow her up with the VE-60SNA.
After her hp reaches 50%, fly her and dash forward to avoide her clone attacks. After that repeate like in the first phase.

What about using the handgun/shoulder cannon that shoots bubbles? They pop shields well

I typically run fast melee builds so here are some of my insights
The coral generators are kind of a trap for lightweights, the recovery from redlining is nice, but your going to be better off with a San-Tai or a Vp-20c and focusing on better energy management
Allula boosters are much better for general mobility than kikakus, you can still move incredibly fast with melee canceling with allulas and you will be quite a bit faster
Double vientos or double etsujins in your hands are incredible for staggering and you can keep the laser blade in your back slot, if your set on double melee, swapping the lance for laser dagger or pulse blade will be much easier to use, any non vertical missile in your right back will be very nice
Equip a core expansion, assualt armor is very nice for dealing with pulse sheilds or using as a stagger punish, pulse armor immediately resets your ACS and is very nice for soaking a hit

I beat Ayre with quad gatling guns but I was running a much faster build at 330-ish or more speed.
Get faster and see how that does. Ayre is 100% annoying if you're in a slow tanky build

u/Algester 14d ago edited 13d ago
go BAWS 2 ran rf, melee of choice in weapon bay and explosive missile weapon bay or normal missile pod
yep I got it change the internals
you may have to go with a single melee its much more uhh conventional, Ocellus is fine, change gen to Yaba or Ming Tang, change booster to fluegel or anything that gets you higher FASTER and more efficient
go for kinetics as you will have a hard time penetrating Ayre's PA
1
u/Algester 14d ago
dual ducks ashmead and a missile pod mmm coincidentally this will skip the shields she summons
the changes I did is switch to Yaba, and used fluegel boosters, SPD could work

u/Cyber_Von_Cyberus 13d ago
The first problem is our generator, the Coral Generators have very big energy pools but atrocious regen, awful choice against Ayre as you're going to have to boost far more frequently than it allows you to.
The second problem is your weapons; energy weapons like the Wrueger and Orbit are bad against pulse shields + they don't deal as much stagger damage as kinetic weapons which pairs badly with your other two melees, especially if you stick with that laser blade instead of the pulse blade which can hit much more reliably
1
u/lilfiregoblin 13d ago
Ditch the Kikaku booster. You're giving up far too much booster stats just for a minor increase in melee boost; you're better off what whatever gives you the 2nd or 3rd best melee stat. I think just that change is good enough
1
u/redbrimst0ne 13d ago
There’s lots of YouTube videos about that fight. I did a lightweight build, dual shotguns and pulse missiles. You gotta keep moving fast and dodge her missiles.

Weapons:
Left Back: VP-61PS Shield and get good at perfect blocking.
Right Shoulder: Standard 4 cell/6 rocket launcher. Useful poking at long range and remains useful blasting away at short range without locking you in place like an earshot or morely.
Right Hand: Any decent stagger weapon, eg. Ludlow, Coquillet, Haldeman, Zimmerman, etc.
Your Battleplan is to stay close, use general positioning and shield to avoid damage, stagger with judicious use of laser blade and right mounted weapons, then punish with charged laser blade.
Internals:
Booster: Fluegel if using melee cancels for movement, Alula or SPD (better with good shieldplay) if not, Kikaku is for gimmick builds and annoying high level tournament players in Build Discussions on the AC6 discord.
FCS: Ocellus, your FCS scaling weapons won't hit anything past close range anyway.
Generator: Yaba, simply has no weaknesses.

If you can get good at dodging her melee attack then it'll be a lot easier. Personally I just dodge into her a bit to her left side and it's basically free hits from there. I kept constantly moving to the left so most her shots would miss all while moving closer to her to bait the melee again. That's at least what helped me beat her in a Balam AC without any repair kits

u/p4rk3rrlife 11d ago
I beat Ayre with:
2x Zimmerman 2x Stun Needle Ocellus FCS San-Tai generator P06SPD booster Reverse-joint legs Terminal Armor
The build matters, but honestly the bigger thing is how you use it.
Stay close, use hard lock, and don’t try to play the fight at mid range. Ayre is way more annoying if you let her dance around you.
What worked best for me was:
Zimmermans to break shield / build stagger -> double Stun Needle on the stagger.
I actually made the mistake at first of dumping the Needles into her shield. It works, but it’s much better to save them for when she’s actually staggered. They hit like a truck there.
Also, don’t fire the Needles just because they’re off cooldown. Ayre moves too much. Wait until she finishes an animation or is staggered, then punish.
For her melee, I had better luck dodging toward/past her instead of backing away. Once she whiffs, turn around and blast her.
Phase 2 is basically the same thing, just more aggressive. Keep shotgun pressure, build ACS, and cash out with the Needles. For the big Coral attacks, vertical movement helps a lot — going above/below her was much safer than trying to dodge everything sideways.
You don’t need a perfect fight either. I got the S-rank without doing anything close to no-hit.
Zimmermans start the argument, Stun Needles end it.

Big boom. Just use the javelin arm missiles that do massive direct damage and the big boom shoulders on the highest hp set up you can get. Then use the shield core to get 2 bubble shields. Max out your explosive damage and damage resistance. Took me about 3minutes to kill her with this set up. Use shield core on her first dodge, run to wall, when she tries to melee direct her with both shoulders. Should kill her shield, then use arms. Rinse repeat. Never leave the wall. This build also works on ibus. I have s rank against Ayre

as someone who's managed to beat her with the loader 4. dodge her projectiles. track her flanks, dodge her sword strikes inward left, or back all the way out if you're relying on your guns. Break her shield with your guns then punish with the shotgun, sword. next phase she'll turn into an airplane, dodge that laterally. Next phase she'll really tweak out. the swords she spawns are easier to dodge upward right, but no guaranteed dodges. she'll follow up with a sword strike. you can dodge this and hit her with whatever you got. sometimes she'll go up high and carpet bomb you out, you want to get high and dodge this laterally. she'll turn into a plane sometimes and circle around you, sending attacks your way as a distraction, then finishing with a laser. this is much easier to dodge the closer you are, but no guarantees on that one. if you're really close somehow, you can punish.

I can respect your second to last sentence, but I feel that what you want to do is at odds with the game itself.
Ibis, for one, is not BS; you either get your speed above 380 and run circles around it, or get good with its attack patterns and dodging. But you've actually gone and made a cheese build for it, which is ironically the spirit of the game: Armored Core is a toy box full of parts. It dares you to throw things together and overcome the challenges it's set out to do. You've done that for Ibis, so why not do that for Ayre and other difficult situations you come across?
If you *must* have Basho everything, then hats off and good luck, but otherwise I really don't think you should be beholden to any single build or part.
