New Subreddit Rules: Professional Boundaries & Ethics

1. No Requests for Free Design, Layouts, or Planning

The Rule: Posts asking for specific architectural solutions, floor plan layouts, or design "ideas" for real-world properties are strictly prohibited.

  • The "Why": Architecture is a regulated profession under R.A. 9266. Providing professional advice without a contract, site inspection, or administrative accountability is a violation of the Architect’s Code of Ethical Conduct. It undermines the value of the profession and constitutes "free consultation," which is unfair to practitioners who rely on these services for their livelihood.

2. No Technical "Quick Fixes" or Structural Advice

The Rule: Do not ask for technical specifications (e.g., column sizes, beam spans, material thickness, or waterproofing methods) for actual construction projects.

  • The "Why": Under the Civil Code of the Philippines, an Architect is liable for the structural integrity of a building for 15 years. Giving "quick advice" online without a full understanding of site conditions (soil type, seismic zone, etc.) is professional malpractice and a major safety risk to the public.

3. No "Ballpark" Estimates or Material Take-offs

The Rule: Requests for detailed cost estimates, Bills of Materials (BOM), or "How much will this cost to build?" for specific personal projects will be removed.

  • The "Why": Professional estimating is a paid service (SPP Doc 204-B). Prices vary wildly based on location, finishing, and current market inflation. Providing "rough numbers" often leads to misinformation and disputes between owners and their future contractors.

4. Academic vs. Professional Distinction

The Rule: Students: Conceptual feedback for school assignments is allowed. Please use the ACAEMIC INQUIRY flair.

  • Homeowners/Clients: Posts must focus on the process (e.g., "How do I find an architect?" or "What is the standard fee for a residential project?").
  • The "Why": We support the growth of future architects (students), but we will not allow the sub to be used as a loophole to bypass hiring a Registered and Licensed Architect (RLA) for private gain.

5. No Solicitation of Unlicensed Services

The Rule: Do not ask for "cheap" drawings or for someone to "just sign and seal" existing plans.

  • The "Why": Asking a professional to sign plans they did not prepare or supervise is a criminal offense and a ground for the revocation of their PRC license. We advocate for the "Architect-of-Record" principle to ensure accountability and public safety.

Moderators Note to Users

If you are a property owner looking for design help, we encourage you to hire a Registered and Licensed Architect (RLA). This ensures your investment is safe, legal, and functional. Architecture is a service that requires years of training, a professional license, and legal accountability.

Please allow the mod team a few hours after posting to manually review and approve it — especially during busy hours or weekends.

Posts may be removed or not approved for a number of reasons, including but not limited to:
1. Violation of subreddit or Reddit-wide rules (e.g., spam, harassment, off-topic content)
2. Repetitive or commonly asked topics — please use the search bar before posting
3. Missing or incorrect flair — all posts must have the proper flair before submission
4. Low-effort, meme-only, or joke posts that don’t contribute meaningfully to discussion
5. Image-only submissions without captions, explanations, or questions
6. Unverified, misleading, or clickbait information

Yellow line is an additional wall.

CALL FOR EXPERT INTERVIEWEES

Good day! I am Aya Grace L. Margarito, a fifth-year Bachelor of Science in Architecture student at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, College of Architecture, Design, and the Built Environment.

I am currently conducting my undergraduate thesis entitled “Philippine Science High School – Negros Occidental Campus: Designing Learning Spaces for STEM Education through Adaptive Architecture,” under the guidance of my thesis adviser, Ar. Jocelyn A. Rivera-Lutap.

The study is based on the findings of Santiago et al. (2018), which observed that existing Philippine Science High School campuses were built with conventional classroom layouts rather than spaces planned for a hands-on, project-based science and mathematics curriculum. This research aims to address that gap by proposing a design for a new campus with learning spaces that can adjust to changing teaching and learning needs.

In line with this, I am inviting professionals to take part in a 15- to 20-minute interview, either online or on-site, to share their experiences in designing school campuses.

Qualifications:

At least 18 years of age

Has relevant experience in campus planning and/or school building design

Participation is voluntary. All responses will be kept confidential and will be used solely for academic purposes.

If you are interested, or if you know someone who may be, please reach out through any of the following:

📞 0915 206 6592

💬 Facebook: Aya Grace Margarito

📧 [gaya4728@gmail.com](mailto:gaya4728@gmail.com)

Your insights will be of great value to this study. Thank you very much, and sharing this post is greatly appreciated!

Rant/Opinion Need your thoughts

I just want to get your opinion regarding sa work ko
Just got hired around october and 1 week palang nagkaron na ng misunderstanding sa tasks na binigay.

No onboarding regarding sa work wala ding nag training or even heads up regarding sa department All I know is Im one of the Architects sa dept namin. Btw ang tanging alam ko lang madaming types of projects and also sabi before sa interview will give me a small scale as a start sa work para ma familiarize ako how they work.

At my first task nagkaron ako ng mga revisions and di nagustuhan ng manager naging checker ko pa daw sya and wasted his time. Direct nag rereport sa kanya but I have a Senior there ang hirap i approach last time na sinabi nya sakin nung nag ask ako regarding sa workload “It’s for you to find out” minsan naman professionals na tayo dapat alam mo na yan. And mind you may file na pinapabigay sakin pero di nya ko tinulungan hanapin, nalaman ko nalang meron pala sya copy but di nya sinend.

It’s really a struggle for me kasi bagong work and bagong scope very far from my previous jobs. Sinabi ko naman sa interview na I lack experience but I am willing to be trained. Pero pag pasok ko no trainings dapat alam ko na. Si Head sinabihan ako na honestly you’re wasting my time kasi dapat alam ko na daw yon and I can use the previous plans for the upcoming project. But I have questions kasi I don’t know the process inside the building I don’t know the flow even their standards nila lalo na if matagal na sila in that field.

I am really frustrated kasi para kang inupo sa desk mo and dapat you know na everything you cannot ask questions basta basta.

Di ko alam natrigger ulit ako I am diagnosed with PDD grabe anxiety ko hirap din ako mag sleep ng nakakapahinga parang gising utak ko nag iisip pano ba hindi magkamali at hindi mapagalitan.

I am considering na mag immediate resig or awol I don’t know what to do.

Discussion Is ₱22k worth it for an Architectural Apprentice on a night shift?

A firm offered me ₱22,000/month as an Architectural Apprentice, with financial assistance for accommodation, but the position requires night shift.

Do you think it’s worth accepting? Is ₱22k reasonable considering the night shift and living expenses in Metro Manila? Would you take the offer or look for other opportunities?

Academic Question is it too late to drop out as a 5th year student

for context, i have been considering dropping out of my 1st semester as a 5th year archi student. the thing is ive paired up with a friend of my, this friend is really close to me and we have been a pair since 4th year.

5th year thesis comes around and i think their true colors are slowly showing, what i mean by that is now that were doing our thesis paper, they usually dont work at all up until a deadline is close, theyre always providing bad quality output and almost always using ai to do the heavy researching for them, like literally i dont think they even understand what theyre writing on the paper. as for me im the one mostly carrying our paper, doing all the research work, and even in our design consultations with our instructors im the one theyre always relying on to speak up, to add to that even in our title hearing defense in fron of the panelists, i was the ONLY one who was literally defending our paper and they didnt even utter one word to the panelists.

now its getting to me and i dont think i can handle all of the carrying anymore , so i was thinking of splitting up and starting over again but the thing is we are already over half of the semester in and i dont even think i can catch up to the deadline, so that led me to another option which is to drop out of the semester and start over again the next year.

is it even worth it or should i just keep going? pls i need advice from fellow archi peeps who have experienced bad partners in their thesis😭

Discussion our degree in the job market(?)

disclaimer: this post is not meant to undermine the profession nor offend anyone, but to raise a valid discussion

anyway, does anyone think that… our degree is a little bit /weak/ in the job market?

it’s not as marketable as let’s say accountancy, or engineering, or statistics, or economics, or math, especially for leadership positions/managerial roles

like for example we learn a lot of soft skills as much as these other degree programs, or is our field really just very niche that these roles are more fitting for those fields?

example: management trainees mostly are from the aforementioned educational backgrounds

is it just me? does anyone have a counterargument?

let’s keep this a healthy discussion pleaseee

Rant/Opinion SHOULD I OR SHOULD I NOT?

Hi everyone. I’m currently in my 5th year and I’m honestly writing this because I don’t know where else to turn or who to talk to, because I feel chained and controlled without the liberty of my own life.

From day one, I never really wanted to pursue this course. I was forced into it and had to set aside what I actually wanted to do with my life. For the past five years, it has felt like constant survival, dealing with heavy workloads, sleepless nights, and the reality that I genuinely cannot see myself in this career.

Now, everything is crashing down at once. Because of academic calendar adjustments and severe time constraints, my thesis isn’t going to make it this year. I’m delayed. I’m so torn right now.

Part of me just wanted to brute-force my way through this final stretch, push my thesis through next year, and finally put an end to this 5-year nightmare just to get the degree and move on. But another part of me is completely exhausted and wondering if I should just cut my losses and shift to something I actually care about, even if it means starting over.

To make matters worse, my family is pressuring me to take the board exam. Just thinking about it for a field that has brought me so much misery makes me want to break down. The mental toll over these past five years has already been way too much.

I feel stuck, exhausted, and terrified of making the wrong choice. I’d really appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or even just a bit of clarity right now. Thank you so much.

Discussion Can one transfer to a diff uni just to finish the thesis subject?

The thesis standards on my current uni is absurd, chap 1-10 for AD9 and I'm struggling to get by. I just want to have a degree, I'm not even pursuing this career anymore. I'm stuck at thesis for 2yrs already, if I have to start from my title back to 0, I might as well do it in a diff uni that has somehow lesser requirements.

Are there any uni (even private, but not the big 4 I'm not rich) in metro manila that allows this? I'm seeing the residency rule from the new uni before awarding the transferee a diploma. Also crossing out these uni's up pup plm tip mapua bcs I know archi thesis there is HARD. I just want an easy way out ugh.

Discussion ARKI FIELD

Just a random tot while reviewing. Gusto ko kasi magkaron ng arki firm and I’ve know and seen a lot of companies who are doing the profession na lang just for the sake of money. Backjobs and mga tinipid na materyales ang halos na gamit. Napaisip tuloy ako, normal na ba yun sa profession natin? Or may mga firms pa naman na righteous at di nakain ng sistema? I want my firm to have an integrity kasi. And sana pag licensed na ako makahanap din ako ng firm na hindi lang ako tuturuan paano magdesign, pero tuturuan din ako ng morale way to handle things.

TODAY’S SKETCH

Arch of the Centuries, UST

More than just an arch, this historic landmark is a witness to centuries of Filipino education, faith, and history.

Did you know? • The Arch of the Centuries originally stood at the entrance of the University of Santo Tomas in Intramuros.

• It survived the transfer of UST to its present campus in Sampaloc, Manila, in 1927.

• The arch commemorates the university’s founding in 1611, making UST one of Asia’s oldest existing universities.

• Its original structure became a symbol of UST’s enduring legacy through wars, generations, and changing times.

• For many Thomasians, passing through the arch is a cherished graduation tradition — a symbolic passage from student life to the wider world.

A little history, captured through sketch by malayang kamay.

Professional Question/Inquiry Worth it pa rin ba kumuha ng professional license in this economy?

hello ask ko lang if worth it pa ba kumuha ng professional license if focus is pera?

sa nakikita ko marami na kasi other career options ngayon for architecture graduates. mas malaki din income if mag international like yung mga offshore / remote roles pa malaki din income pero usually hindi required na licensed. may mga construction VA na rin ngayon. pag rin mag iibang bansa experience din yata halos ang hanap and not the license? (not sure paki correct po ako if mali)

anyway i am currently still seeking architectural apprenticeship po e pero sa mga nakikita kong salary and career path ng mga licensed architects na iba, pinag iisipan ko na po if worth pa ba mag apprenticeship or magfocus na ko sa ibang architectural role na walang mentor. btw income and mataas na salary din po talaga priority ko.

so ayun ano din po ba mamimiss out if ever hindi na pinursue pagkuha ng license and will it be worth missing it?
