This guy started an outdoor services company in my area on October 19th and this was his first post on his company Facebook page. You better believe that I left a comment about him being proud that he did this job safely even though he clearly Barber chaired one of the trees.

Multiple Varieties of American Elm

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

I am running my own version of the National Elm Trial in my yard. I planted 3 varieties of American Elm that I could get from online nurseries:

  1. Princeton - planted 1 year ago (first pic)
  2. Valley Forge - planted from bare root plant 6 months ago (second pic)
  3. New Harmony - planted 1 month ago (third pic)

The Valley Forge was the most difficult to get going because I had to get it established in a pot before planting. However, this was the only way it was available. I’ll post an update in 7-10 years with the results!

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I am in US zone 6b in Massachusetts. All 3 trees were planted with the root flair exposed, water regularly after planting, and mulched around the base.

Saucer Magnolia blooming in October

My Saucer Magnolia is blooming in the Midwest, USA, in autumn (October 24). Could it be because of unseasonably warm weather? Daytime highs are in the 70s; about 8-10 degrees above normal.

I am so concerned I suddenly noticed this browning in two of our Evergreens. Is this normal at all? The other ones are fine. Located in Geogia.

Is this Dogwood crown canker ? What to do?

Thumbnail gallery

Hi, I have a Kousa dogwood that I planted about 3-4 years ago. Last year I had some issues with deer scratching other trees on the property so I installed a metal mesh ring around it to prevent damage. It was loose enough but today I went to go check out the tree and noticed there were some leaves around it, not too many. But when I removed the mesh, I noticed a large area at the base of the tree that was peeling and looked different. Is this crown canker or maybe something else? What should I do? Thanks in advance !

Here is my tree now

I posted before about cutting this down or doing a crown reduction and thinning. I thought I would share how it looks now.

I think I am going to become a DIY arborists and over the next few years trim it directionally away from the house along with the reshaping the maple in front of it and 2 mulberry trees in the backyard. I want to remove the grass and dirt around the root mound too. Maybe put a little ring around it.

If this was your plant would you try to clear the root flare even though it’s been in the ground for a couple of years now? I know it’s probably choking and rotting down in the dirt but it doesn’t seem to be affecting the growth. I thought I planted this perfectly. Potted too deeply?

Is something wrong with these pines?

Bought a house because it's essentially surrounded by the woods and I love the smell of pine needles. I don't remember them looking this ratty when we were looking at this house back in May. I feel like I would notice this. Now after closing a lot of them look like this. Is this a problem? Or just something that happens normally? I would hate to have bought a house with 50 dead pines around it.

Should I trim this branch?

Thought I’d get y’all’s 2nd opinion on this. I have small tree in my front yard with a diverging branch shown in the photo where it splits off from the main trunk. It seems solid, healthy and won’t ever be an issue with property, so should I consider trimming it this fall?

Help My Poor Avocado Tree’s Dying

Thumbnail gallery

This started about a month ago. The local nursery recommended I treat it with Horticultural oil weekly, then they suggested alternating weeks with neem. I did with no results. There doesn’t appear to be any new shoots forming which makes me wonder if it’s going to pull-through.

Yesterday I tried Sevin, but doubt it will do anything.

This is an established, 20 year old tree. Before all this started, I hadn’t done anything differently than I’ve done in years. Typically I fertilize once a year and barely need to water them at all. Right now the soil’s saturated with rain water, but that’s because we’ve had a rainy week, but before that it wasn’t.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 🥑

Does this root need to be addressed? Happy to leave it if it’s fine! What about the split trunk that begins about 10ft up?

How do yall keep from your body deteriorating, if you can.

About 7 years in and I’ve got crazy burn out a pinched nerve in my hand that gives me pretty consistent trouble and now any time I lift a smaller log I wake up in excruciating lower back pain (I life with my knees not my back).

Had to address a handful of uprooted / failed trees a couple weeks ago, I didn’t lift a whole lot but I spent the whole day with a saw in my hand. Then the next week was hell, couldn’t sleep due to my back being in so much pain and took a lot of effort to get going at work.
Well I spent about 30 minutes cutting some things about waist height so my back should be fine. But I lifted maybe 4 small logs and my back is just cooked.

Basically nothing and my back is wrecked.

Tree diseases?

Went on a walk through Lincoln Woods state park and noticed all these trees had what looked like infected wounds or something? Anyone got any idea on the cause or if it will kill them anytime soon? So many of these had the same kind of malformations on them.

Will new branches take place where my old branches died on my pine tree or will it stay dead and bare at the bottom?

Thumbnail gallery

Im sure i already know the answer and they're not going to grow back but for some reason on the base of my pine tree I should say it's my Christmas tree that I have had growing in the yard for decades decided to die on the bottom in a portion of it. I'm going to guess it's probably from the Cherry Bush that was growing too close to it and maybe shaded out the light from the area?

I was going to cut down the bush that was next to it but I think now that I have a feeling that that area will never grow back maybe I'll leave that bush there to kind of hide it?

Anything to worry about with the bases here?

Thumbnail gallery

Hard to get a good picture so I apologize, over the weekend I raked away ~2 years of leaves and mulch from this side area of three trees (not the oak). The base of 2 of them seem to be sticking out of the ground a bit more then they should, is this something time can fix with the leaves gone and no longer rotting or is it a future issue?

How do I properly take saplings out of the ground and replant it?

Hello, I live in the northeast of Pennsylvania. I have two saplings, that I believe are cedar trees, growing close to my house. I'd like to dig these out of the ground and transplant them somewhere else in my yard. How do I do this safely? And do you have any tips on read areas might be good for the saplings to grow?
