MOD APPROVED POST ✅️ Reminders and Community Goals

Post image
424 Upvotes

Enjoy the meme, lol! Tis handmade ✨️

Hey everyone! We want to thank everyone who's participated in our community this past month for the engaging posts, thoughtful answers, and (overall) incredibly respectful conduct. It's been nice to watch the community come together so helpfully for so many people! That said, there have been a few incidents that have drawn some attention, and we wanted to go over a few things and hear input from you all.

App/Website promotion

For starters, we've had many people reaching out to our team about promoting their fishkeeping apps or websites. While we understand that you're trying to reach out to a community that will use them, we cannot endorse apps or websites on this subreddit when they are self promoted. There are a number of safety issues in doing so, and being a part of an app store does not eliminate those risks. In addition, we have to take into account that AI bots pull massive amounts of information from reddit. When it does, it may list our subreddit as a source for your application's information, which is an obvious issue as we have no way of vetting an entire app/website for it's accuracy. That could end up misleading people who trust us as a source.

Mutual Respect

A community is built on mutual respect, both of your peers and between authority figures. Reporting an automod comment is disrespectful, and downright unhelpful. If you believe an action was taken unfairly or accidentally, please message us with a link to the message and ask us why we took the action! We are more than happy to explain the reasoning behind every action we take and admit when we are wrong.

Being disrespectful towards a poster's pets, situation, and age is also becoming an increasing problem. We've also seen advice being given on legal matters and personal health. This is an aquarium subreddit. We will remove any and all comments pertaining to subjects not in that realm of knowledge. We will remove any unproductive or hateful comments. WE WILL REMOVE ANY COMMENTS THAT ARE HARRASSING MINORS. This includes but is not limited to telling them they are abusers for being unable to correct a bad situation, repeatedly suggesting options they are not financially capable of, or suggesting they start fights with parents or guardians.

Community Goals

Lastly we want to remind people of the goal of this community- for aquarists young and old, new and experienced, of nanos to monsters, to come together and share knowledge, fun moments, show off, or help each other. You've been so fantastic at this! As a mod team we want to help you feel comfortable and safe enough to share these things. We pose a question to you, if you want to answer- what are you looking for in this community? Knowing your goals can help us align the subreddit with them and grow even more.

Swim safe out there folks!

Discussion The r/aquarium wiki is now live!

After a lot of work behind the scenes, we’ve finally enabled the r/aquarium wiki!

It’s definitely still a work in progress, so don’t be surprised if you click on a link and it doesn’t go anywhere yet. Some of the pages listed on the index are planned but haven’t been published yet. The pages that are currently published are available to view and use.

We’ll be continuing to add pages and expand the wiki over time, with the goal of creating a helpful resource for both new and experienced fishkeepers.

And this is where we’d really appreciate some community input!

If you read through any of the published pages and:

- Disagree with something

- Think something needs more explanation

- Notice something we should correct

- Think we’re missing important information

- Have a topic you think should be added

Please let us know here in the comments! We want the wiki to be useful to the community, and feedback from other fishkeepers is a big part of making that happen.

You can check out the Wiki here.

There’s still plenty left to build, but we’re excited to finally have it available!

Last night I saw one of my two rope fish, violently shaking, what seemed to be the shell of one of my prettiest magenta ivory magenta mystery snails.. comes out she was literally eating my snail… and it still gives me chills typing it out… I’m kinda devastated and would never ever put any new snails in my tank.

Help Unsure of what kind of eggs I have. Possible white cloud minnows?

I've got corys, some elderly guppies, white cloud minnows, the hellspawn (ramshorns), and a single assassin snail in the tank.

I think they may be white cloud minnows eggs bcs well nothing else I've got in the tank lays eggs like these. They're sprinkled on a ton of my plants. I've mostly only done guppies, rice fish, and corys, and the minnows have only been in a pond outside in the past, so I'm out of my comfort zone on these guys.

If they're white clouds, these parents don't seem to be as good at.. uh... Maintaining their egg counts as my corys are. I was hoping to get them breeding over winter to use them as mosquito eating fish in my pond in the summer, so crossing my fingers ig?

I took a cutting off some plants and put them into a quarantine tank to see what will hatch out of them.

Found the biggest Crossocheilus I have ever seen this weekend, couldn’t leave him in the shop. He’s going to take a while to settle in and I just see this little face appear every so often watching me when I am in the fish room.

Help Plant growth stagnant

Help. My plants in my planted 5 gallon beta tank have not grown an inch. I’ve had this tank for about 5 months and my plants don’t seem to grow, if anything, they get slightly worse but not necessarily die. I have a light at max strength for 6 hours a day, weekly liquid fertilizer and root tabs. Plants consist of anubius nana, dwarf hairgrass, baby Amazon sword, and Java fern. Please help.

Help Should I be concerned about small gap between tank and fish stand?

36 gallon on very sturdy platform made with 2x4 overkill and double layer plywood. Variable footings with 2k lb weight rating, used to level. HOWEVER, noticed small gaps under that tank indicating the platform has flatness imperfections.

I just resealed this tank, went well; think I did pretty solid job.

Additional non relevant details

Tank was just cycled for a week prior to fish with rocks from koi pond. The fish will go back in the koi pond in the summer, just brought them in for the winter for the kiddo. There are two current fans seen in the pics, only one is on. Cascade 1000 canister filter, 1 sponge filter, with two more sponge filters to be added soon on a shared 4.5 w aerator. Plants will be added in additional ceramic pots, maybe some floaters too. Pathos trims being started out the back.

Help African Clawed Frog Advice

Someone I know has no experience won one in a raffle. He is in a TWO GALLON tank. No filter. No heater. No light. No plants. Just some pebbles.
I’m trying to give her the info to take care of him or to take him home but I also have no idea what to do.

Please give me any info or resources so I can have her buy everything she needs or I can buy everything for my own set up.

I feel horrible for this poor frog and only have Betta experience.

Help Need help determining if this spot will hold a large tank

Post image

Hey folks! I recently bought a 55 gallon tank that I want to put in this archway in the main part of my house. However I’m a little concerned that it won’t hold the weight, I’m estimating a full 55 gallon would weigh 500-550 lbs. Just based on knocking on it, it seems like the studs are located in the red spots. I’ll have to confirm with a stud finder but what do yall think? Would this be too precarious? If so is there a stand that any 55 gallon owners recommend that I should use instead?

Help Suggestions needed

Hi! I’m fairly new to fish keeping, my partner does all the tank maintenance. We’re looking to add another fish or 3 to our freshwater community tank (20g) and would love some suggestions! We would like the new fish to be kinda flashy or funky looking, unique colors would be cool. Our planted tank currently consists of:
4 guppies
3 mollies
2 female bettas
9 small shrimp
Assorted snails

If I need to add more info please let me know! What kind of fish should we add?

Hey, I'm finally getting around to adding fish to my tank tomorrow. Just looking for some ideas that are similar to what I currently have in mind.

I'm thinking some Harlequin Rasbora, Glowlight tetras and a single(?) Honey Gourami. Not too sure about the numbers either. The tank is 100L (26.5gal), 400LPH filter, PH 6.7, KH 3, GH 4/5. Currently stocked with 9 cherry shrimp and 3 nerite snails. Thanks

Help Advice

Hello Reddit,

This is my first aquarium and I have a few issues.

I’m in the midst of a snail infestation due to contaminated plants I received. My first thought was to purchase a few assassin snails and to manually remove as many snails as I can.
- Would this take care of that issue?
- How do I humanely euthanize the snails removed?

My second issue is that the substrate looks funky. I used Japanese volcanic substrate then capped it with black gravel instead of sand. This may be an issue now as I’m trying to clean the gravel.
- So is the brown just the substrate coming up? I’m providing images of what I mean.
- Should I replace the substrate and replant?.

My third issue is that I’ve noted that the pH in the tank has lowered and hasn’t increased for a while. At first, I thought it was due to the driftwood, but I removed it for a month and the pH did not change. I’ll attach the most recent parameters here.
- From what I read for the pH it’s around 6.6-6.8. Is this what y’all read?
- How can I get it around 7.0-7.2?

Can I please get some advice on how to deal with these issues?

Thanks in advance!

Edit 1:
- 10 gallon aquarium.
- Water heater reads 81.1°F
- The tank was established in June where I cycled it for a month then added animals.
- I have amano shrimp, a betta, and the infestation snails.
- I used to lose a lot of water to evaporation, so I would be replenishing the water. Now with the lid I plan on doing water changes weekly for about 1/5 of the tank. I’m just worried about the water and the snails as I don’t want to release (possibly invasive) snails into our area.
- I feed the betta pellets and blood worms. 1-3 times a day in little amounts.
- there is no illness (except snails) to my knowledge.

I've only been keeping Guppies since August but since that time I had five batches of fry. Yesterday,

my black metal guppy female (pictured) looked like she was going to pop and sure enough today did just that. It has really started to hit me how many fish I am ending up with, but anyway I have Guppies ranging from 6 weeks to now. For those who have dealt with a population explosion, where oh where doyou re-home them? LFS. Local guppy groups? Aqua Swap ? Which is best? I live in Lancaster county Pennsylvania.. Thank you in advance , all!

And my wood decoration has what looks like mold on it and the water is still very murky. Any tips?

Illness/Injury Eggbound or something else? What to do

10 gallon tall freshwater
Bubbler and top fin filter
Planted
Fully cycled

Parameters: 6.6 ph, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 0 nitrate. 75 f
Tank residents: 2 peacock grudgeons, one male one female (have been here for around 6 months), 2 Ottocinclus (have been here for around 8 months), a lot of MTS

As of around 3 months ago was the last time our female peacock grudgeon laid eggs. Since then, she’s grown to be rather rotund. We thought she could possibly be Eggbound because of not laying eggs and the rotundness, even with the male’s best efforts. During this time, she has been perfectly normal. Still very social, swims around eats food no behavior or lack thereof to make us concerned. We started questioning if maybe she was just really chunky, so we put her on a diet for the past couple weeks. She still to this day has not exhibited any signs of behavior change.

Recently, while it did look like she had slimmed down a tiny bit, her belly has gotten red and kind of dilapidated but still rotund if that makes sense? Like divots kind of, with a tiny bit of white stuff poking out. Now we’re worried that if she was overweight or Eggbound that she possibly picked up a bacteria infection or internal parasites are starting to take hold. We dosed with prazipro and we’re planning to do an Epsom bath. We’re really kind of dumbfounded about how everything seemed ok even though she was big and then suddenly her stomach looked dramatically worse, and we’re at a loss of answers.

Does anyone have any idea what’s going on/what went wrong/ how to help? She still is behaving normal, and none of the other fish are displaying physical signs of being sick or have had behavioral changes
