iPhone iPhone Duo Durability Test - DONT DO THIS

I can’t even look at this guy’s thumbnails without getting that sensory discomfort just from imagining the utility knife scratching the screen.

u/gabzmog 4d ago
Reading this comment..I could hear the screeching sound of blade against the chrome.

u/Endawmyke 4d ago
The sound of the blade on the metal peels my teeth.
I have to skip past it every time

u/Fuckin2FA 3d ago
Ironically premium has started to let me skip it cuz its a frequently skipped section 😂

It’s the sand and dirt inside the foldables’ hinges that makes me squirm just by thinking about it

Why watch him then? It’s just clickbait for tribal bullshit.
There’s very little science behind it other than breaking shit porn.
4
u/Aaawkward 3d ago
I mean it's pretty decent durability test (even if an extreme version), especially seeing how there're literally no others performing any tests that are even remotely similar.

u/wontellu 3d ago
I watched probably one or two of his videos. It's not that I dislike him (I actually follow his socials), it's that as soon as he brings out the scratching tools I can't keep watching, it literally gives me goosebumps.
-1
u/Aaawkward 3d ago
Kinda wild that a bit of silly whimsy is being seeing as cringe.
You do you but dang, it's nice for Youtubers to have any personality.
59
u/kellyjepsen 4d ago
Crazy he scratched the white one, but then removed the nano texture from the black one … I wanted to see what those scratches did to the layers behind that nano texture!
20
u/element515 3d ago
Yeah, is he keeping the black one for himself? lol. We all know the nano texture will scratch. He even talked about the glass in the folding screen. The only interesting thing was to see if it would scratch without the first layer
19
u/Objective_Swing160 3d ago
He usually does a durability test on one phone and a tear down of the other. At least when he’s worried the device will not survive the durability test (see: pixel fold)

u/leodw 4d ago
Anyone else kinda surprised about the sand test? I know he poured a handfull of dust on the hinge so obviously that would cause problems, but I was under the impression IP68 meant the phone can withstand dust actually preventing it from functioning?
I get that the inner screen can be easily scratched by sand on a beach, but it seems the major problem is dust getting inside the hinge… so does that mean it’s not truly IP68?
525
u/Time_Entertainer_319 4d ago
It’s a technicality Google and Apple exploit.
The hinge is said to not be inside the phone so they exclude it from the rating assessment.
Seems Samsung is the only honest one
107
u/Top_Flight2 3d ago
Samsung is more honest is being noted for me. Thanks for explaining this.
36
u/OphioukhosUnbound 3d ago
That depends on whether their phone can pass the by-the-letter ip68 test. If it can, and they intentionally downgrade themselves to better communicate limitations that would be quite somethign .... but if that were true I'd imagine there'd be more of an asterix -- as ip68 still matters, it's more that the test doesn't cover certain things that might be expected.
37
u/flatbuttboy 4d ago
It’s not really an exploit if that’s all that’s required for the test, maybe it just needs to be updated for foldables
158
u/Creative-Captain9278 4d ago edited 3d ago
It's a massive marketing exploit of how IP ratings actually work.
To get that "6" in IP68, the phone just sits completely still in a dust chamber. As long as dust doesn't reach the sealed internal logic board, it passes. The test completely ignores external mechanical parts like hinges.
When you take a foldable to the beach, sand gets trapped inside the moving gears of the hinge. The moment you fold it, that grit grinds against the mechanism and destroys it, even if the dust never technically "entered" the electronics.
They are basically leveraging a static lab test to slap "Dust-Proof" on the box, knowing damn well that real-world sand will still brick the hinge.0
0
u/JamesR624 2d ago
It's a HUGE fucking exploit. The fact that the people in charge of the rating doesn't make it not one, it just means they're in on it with Apple and Google to market these devices that are clearly not suitable for "the real world", as "ready" to get people to pay $2000 for a device that CANNOT STAND UP to normal use in the real world.

u/gtedvgt 3d ago
This is now the 2nd time samsung has surprised me with how "virtous" they are, at least as in these 2 very specific cases.
The 1st time was when I found out samsung for every phone past the note 7 has had higher battery cycle ratings for their phones, and if made perfect sense to me because my s21 ultra had better battery health than some of my family's iphones even though they were newer.
I'm so curious about stuff like this because for the note 7 maybe there was a strict internal policy to always focus on batteries or something, but I seriously can't imagine them giving a fuck about technically lying to get their ip rating, maybe they just don't know about it?
15
u/Ericjuuh 3d ago
Funny that you mention this because I had the exact opposite. My samsung s21 ultras battery gave up so fast that I switched to iPhone and never looked back. Maybe it was then just an issue on my side?
1
1
u/Humancentipede2lover 1d ago
So that means getting sand in the hinge doesnt count as a warranty case?
Tbh, that would be a scam
1
u/film_digital 3d ago
I had no idea about this and that seems like a huge exploit for consumers who think the Duo can withstand rough environments (construction workers, etc.)
0
u/u7q_1842x 3d ago
Google's at least handled the dust/sand better, though this isn't a scientific test at all.
76
u/Shkkzikxkaj 4d ago
The IP68 test for dust has the phone static, so the folding mechanism doesn’t get exposed to dust while in operation.
109
u/Yellow_Bee 4d ago edited 3d ago
Which is exactly why Samsung doesn't advertise IP68 rating even though their device meet that exact spec... (they purposely chose IP48 as a warning to consumers)
Samsung at least understood that to the layperson they'll assume IP68 applies to the folding hinge mechanism, whereas the rating is only true for a static device like current slab phones.
Apple prematurely/irresponsibly went the Google route of "me first" by claiming that their device is technically IP68 when they knew the rating is flawed/needs updating for foldables.
Honestly, I was half expecting Apple to innovate in this area by setting a whole new standard, one that the rating consortium would adopt (not the case if you watched their keynote). This is why most tech journalists shouldn't be trusted, they dunked on Samsung without understanding the nuance of how the IP rating system works (it was obvious w/ the Pixel Fold).
TL;DR: Samsung's IP48 rating (which technically meets IP68) is actually more responsible since it actually accounts for the folding mechanism (it's a physics problem). Apple went the lazy "technically correct" corporate route like lazy screen manufactures do with HDR support (which is arguable anti-consumer & very un-Apple).
Edit: comparisons like these will continue to pop-up, not a good look for Apple/John... https://youtu.be/u37MCjv3_DY
28
u/Shkkzikxkaj 4d ago edited 4d ago
Phone manufacturers also consider it accidental damage instead of a defect if you get water damage, despite the water rating… it’s weird that this is the standard in the industry to advertise your phone can resist water/dust but then blame the consumer when the resistance fails.
6
u/OphioukhosUnbound 3d ago
Apple coasting on reputational inertia sounds believeable to me.
Any reference that shows that samsung's foldables technically do pass ip68 -- I haven't even heared android users mentioning this. And I'd naively imagine they'd say something liek ip68/ip48 to communicate this, rather than just downgrading themselves without explanation. (As static ip48 vs 68 is still a meaningful stat.)

u/fairtonybeta 4d ago edited 4d ago
Seems like a glaring omission in the standard then. Maybe there should be some new levels to the test to rank ‘operation of movable parts’.
29
u/Injustice_Warrior 4d ago
That’s not actually the point of 60529 though.
The standard is about electrical safety so IP6X is about potentially conductive dust not being able to enter the electrical enclosure and potentially cause electrical faults (which might in turn lead to the user getting a shock or the device catching fire).
Whether or not you can get away with dust getting in the hinge would then depend on the end product standard as they might have different requirements for what constitutes a failure.
For example, for medical devices (my expertise) the manufacturer would have to separately risk assess the result to ensure it doesn’t cause an unacceptable risk. I have no experience testing phones though (which I assume come under the IT/AV equipment standard).
Source: this is my job.
14
u/TheBlueNovember 3d ago
Such a valid question and the comments are so good. Everyone else is bitching that he did this or poured it directly into the hinge. But that was super valid because someone’s gonna hear IP68 and do something or take this phone somewhere and get fucked
6
u/HillarysFloppyChode 3d ago
It’s getting stuck in the area between body and hinge cover. It looks like it all came out before he bent it
3
u/cookedart 3d ago
No, I'm not surprised. There are other foldables that have claimed ip68 (like the pixel) that sand could still enter the hinge. I figured there was a very high chance the duo would have the same issue.
3
u/Masson011 3d ago
Unless you work in an office I just cant see how anyone could get a duo like this
Shits going to get into the hinge and overtime youve got big problems. Theres nothing you can do about it
8
u/OphioukhosUnbound 3d ago
We've got 8ish years of foldables.
I'm curious how apple hinge compares to others and what livability is like in practice for others.I'm surprised we don't get more 'used experience' comparisons from the almost a decade of foldables out there when this stuff comes up.
4
u/Outlulz 3d ago
My husband has had foldables for about 6 years now. His first Samsung did get some gunk in the hinge that was keeping it from closing after about a year which he got fixed under warranty. Other than that I think he's had 3 or 4 different foldables with no issues. This includes a couple Hawaii vacations that included going to the beach.
The fact is Jerryrigeverything does not test normal usage, he tests extremes. Yes, if you bury your phone in the sand it's going to have problems due to the hinge. Try not to bury your phone in the sand.
-1
u/picastchio 3d ago
This test covers the case when you ever drop your phone on a natural dirty surface. So unless you spend 365x24 in a concrete jungle...this is relevant.
1
u/thesandman00 3d ago
Yes. That's the point of why he does that. The hinge on this thing is a big miss this year.
1
1
u/SirBill01 3d ago
looking at my Duo hinge I am just not seeing how sand or water can get in there at all. I don't think in real life very much if any dust/dirt is going to get in there.
1
u/scubac14 3d ago
These tests are so dumb. How this guy got famous doing dumb tests makes no sense. If you like watching tech be destroyed on purpose. Okay sure. If you’re expecting g any useful amount of day to day wear on a phone tests go somewhere else.

It's a shame so many people will miss out on the wonderful Samsung Folds thinking Apple's Duo is the standard for foldables yet it's so shit.
39
u/Viktor_Fury 3d ago
People who know Samsung exist I highly doubt actually consider Samsung hardware as bad or worse here.
The issue is Android. I have an Oppo Find N6 and it’s just objectively better than the Duo in hardware. The software though? Sucks ass.
18
u/SpeakingTheKingss 3d ago
Yup, it’s all about the software. I’d gladly use a Samsung phone if Apple let them use their OS.
1
u/kasakka1 2d ago
I moved from iPhone to Samsung foldables and prefer the software. Using a Fold 7 atm for well over a year.
I have found iOS to be very stagnant where it's not gaining any new features worth mentioning. Samsung OneUI is so highly customizable that I feel I can make it work the way I want, not the way Apple has decided I should use it.
Of course both have their own share of issues, but overall I feel more in control of my phone with Android. Performancewise I don't have any real complaints with either.
-3
u/GoobieDooobie 3d ago
I switched to the Fold 7 last year after being a long time Apple user and I have found Android to be just as easy.
2
u/FailBait- 1d ago
Oh a lot of us are aware, and while Samsung makes great components (and I do really like the boxy style of Samsungs newer phones), I refuse to buy another Samsung consumer product ever again. A few years ago I bought a $1400 Samsung monitor, the original G9 49” model. 8 months in it had enough with an issue that EVERY unit had for that model (if you enabled 240hz, GSYNC AND HDR the SoC got overloaded and it started only drawing every other line, like CRT scan lines). Opened a case with Samsung they told me the fix was to buy the newer version that just releases at $2k (fun fact it had the same issue) and refused to do anything to help me. After that response I was done. The only remaining Smsung branded item in my house is a soundbar (that also still works/sounds great) that I’ve blocked from the internet so they can’t firmware update it and it can start sucking. After that thing dies never again.
0
-8
u/MidniteCowby 3d ago
There is no "test" though because he is not using a scientifically sound method with a clean lab environment with results that can be replicated on several units.
12
u/Piersontheraven 3d ago
The world is not a clean lab environment, no one cares what would happen to their phone under perfect conditions. We all wanna see what's the worst case scenario
0
u/Xylamyla 3d ago
It matters when you’re comparing the results. If you’re not testing in the same exact conditions, there’s no point in comparing results.
28
u/HillarysFloppyChode 3d ago
As long as you aren’t intentionally forcing sand into it, or using it as a shovel, it should be ok.
47
u/Creative-Captain9278 3d ago
Drop it accidentally while at the beach and you got sand in your hinge. Is that unrealistic?
9
u/Dallaslum 3d ago
The damage could probably be avoided by cleaning the sand off before opening or closing the phone again
1
u/HillarysFloppyChode 3d ago
Shake the phone, or tap it on the table the sand will fall out.
It looks like it’s sticking in the space between the phone case halves and the hinge, not in the actual hinge.
0
u/SirBill01 3d ago
Then you rinse it off (or even just wipe it off) before you open it and it's fine.
2
u/DeathByPetrichor 3d ago
This is why I’m genuinely considering that number swap thing so I can take a beater phone to the beach or hiking or something and use the duo all the other time. Probably worth the $10 for peace of mind
61
u/TheOddEyes 3d ago
As someone who has frequent business trips to Arrakis, The Duo’s vulnerability to sand is a deal breaker to me
14
u/beanlikescoffee 3d ago
I have a work trip to tatooine. You’re telling me I can’t grasp a fist full of sands and pour into the hinge of the phone?
Return.
3
u/kasakka1 2d ago
I'm more of a farm worker and it's the drop tests on rocks that worry me more. I have to be constantly vigilant about graboids messing with me when I'm on sand.
4
u/woxvirus 3d ago
Do you get buried in the sand in your business meetings?
3
u/LZR0 3d ago edited 3d ago

It’s Gen 1 device, there is only so much you can defend it. It will be perfect by Ver 3, like always.
Till then issues are issues.
-1
u/Goodoflife 3d ago
But every foldable has the same vulnerability, plus he could've tried washing the iPhone Duo after getting it dusty.
1
u/pathalogicalMoron 3d ago
It's not a good enough reasoning, apple took years for a foldable and doesn't keep up with devices of way less price.

So... just going to point out, that Jerry is one sided. While doing the test for the Z Fold 8, he uses a minimum amount of dirt on the inside screen and hinge. But when doing the same test with the Duo he uses a handful. And when using sand on the hinge he purposely goes up and down the hinge on the Duo making sure to effect it, while on the Z Fold 8 he adds the smallest amount. Not the same test as its not getting the same results.
Edit: posted similar comment in the Samsung Galaxy sub... Definitely not liking the comment. I own both a Z Fold and iPhone Duo. Have owned an iphone since the 3Gs upgrading each year to the new model and have been off and on with android for the funky phones. I in no way wanna say one is better than the other. Each has their own thing. But lets be genuine when doing reviews. Consumers need a level an non biased review.
Edited for spelling and changed z fold to samsung Galaxy sub

u/Rbtywo30 3d ago
I thought you were being nit picky at first, but I went and watched the video and holy crap you are right. It’s like watching two different tests completely.
150
u/leafsforever811 3d ago
Literally uses a handful on the Duo and then uses a small nickle size on the Z Fold but also dumps it off the screen before closing the Z Fold. When doing the hinge, he almost pushes the sand into the Duo up and down the hing. But on the Z Fold again uses a smaller amount and only closes the phone once before turning upside down letting out sand and then closing it a few times. Totally different and causing different results. Jerry is a android fan boy. So he rigs his tests in favor of android.

u/Fuckin2FA 3d ago
Favor of android I mean look at the Pixel fold, didnt google create android? Pixel
2
u/CaptainCobraBubbles 3d ago
One advertises the IP48 and the other advertises IP68. One is supposed to be basically sealed against that, the other isn't.
1
u/Necessary_Purple_428 3d ago
Jerry isn't an android fanboy as much as he is an apple hater.
Regardless, the example you picked is cherry picked. He uses a ton of sand on the pixel fold and galaxy 8 fold ultra.
-4
u/massacre0520 3d ago
I just watched both videos, what are you going on about. I think its fairly tested in both, y'all are trippin'.
26
u/OneWhoSeeksAdvice 3d ago
Jerry’s tests are not controlled and have variance. I think it’s better to look at iFixIt’s tests for things like dust in the hinge, they’re more methodical.
74
u/Raveen396 3d ago
I think he’s just inconsistent, the Z Fold 8 Ultra test was pretty similar to the Duo test.
77
u/mobyte 3d ago edited 3d ago
He’s not a scientific tester. He just fucks around, scratches phones with some picks, tries to break them with maximum pressure, and calls it a day. They’re really not high quality videos (when it comes to being valuable information) and it’s something anybody could do.
21
u/Aaawkward 3d ago
They’re really not high quality videos (when it comes to being valuable information) and it’s something anybody could do.
I suppose so but nobody else is doing them.
It's nice to have at least some idea of the durability of phones.1
u/kasakka1 2d ago
I don't think it's reasonable to expect a highly scientific test for something like this.
Like are you supposed to measure your dust to a gram, make sure it has consistent amounts of small and big grains, pebbles etc? Have 10x $2000 phones lined up to consistently verify the results?
I find it still valuable to see what might happen if you scratch the phone with your keys, or drop it on a beach or somehow manage to sit on it or something.
24
u/No-Entertainer9386 3d ago
This..... Let's ignore the fact that the Duo is supposedly a higher dust rating. It failed and did worse than the both the Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra.
The screen failed as well, just like people have reported already
The other glaring item (no pun intended) was how washed out the screen looked side by side when he took off the matte layer.
The glazers will ignore all these issues and call the tests rigged. Oh, that's already happened.

He’s always been this way, his Apple product reviews are always underwhelming to him. The device would have to cure cancer for him to admit it’s a good product, there’s been maybe 2-3 times he’s even given them praise.
7
u/Danger_Mysterious 3d ago
I mean he does everything but outright say “I don’t like apple phones” in the video…
65
u/thedylannorwood 3d ago
Jerry has always been like this. He straight up stopped doing drop tests on iPhones because they kept passing all his tests but still kept praising Google and Samsung for years on how much more drop resistant they were to iPhones. I’m not sure he even does drop tests at all anymore
→ More replies (2)67
u/coronakillme 3d ago
But when you see the Z fold video, it says "the phone is not dust resistant" as he reads the instructions. Iphone duo is supposed to be IP68 dust proof (according to him)
→ More replies (3)22
u/leafsforever811 3d ago
The dust proof when they test is done with talcum powder. So going and dumping a handful of sand with rocks isnt the same. And when you test another phone and drop sand in the sreen but dump the sand off the screen... not the same test. Also not being genuine when you kinda rub the sand in and then open and close the the hinge a few times. Not sure about you, but if I knew I had dust or sand in my hinge I wouldn't be opening or closing it multiple times. I'd be rinsing it under water to flush it out seeing as its water resistant and can be rinsed to flush out those particles. Again... not being really genuine with the test.
→ More replies (9)6
u/Fuckin2FA 3d ago
Well so why are you linking to the fold 8 and not looking at the pixel fold which share the same IP 68 dust resistance?
I mean its clear that the pixel fold also got the same dust treatment as the duo can see for youself here; Pixel Fold

That was what I thought too. So people are purposely bending the phones backwards and then saying it’s a design issue lol
12
11
u/F242 3d ago
So this means that when the phone is submerged the entire hinge assembly actually gets flooded with water which is interesting. I wonder what that’ll do to the lubricants used on the gears.
6
u/roma79 3d ago
Mr Mobile already tested his in a swimming pool
3
u/F242 3d ago
Sure but the hinge mechanism is still going to get wet. So any dirt + water is really going to be a problem over time. Apple rates the Duo’s dust and water resistance the same as the 18P and 18PM so technically you should be able to submerge the Duo in sand and then water and not be a problem which it obviously is.

What I don't really like is how his hatred for apple gets in the way of what could be an actual durability test.
Why does he dump more sand in the display and hinges than any other foldable? Did the crapload of sand scratch the inner screen? Would clearing the sand from the magnets allow the phone to close? Why does the screen close sometimes after he said the screen wouldn't close anymore?
I prefer his teardowns rather than his durability tests, but I do understand the durability test is not scientific, it's done under his terms and it's meant to just bring views.
I find interesting that he's now considering getting an apple device. Of course he'll strap it on his knees and do the kneecopter every day and then say it's just something he always did with his previous phones with no issues, but I wonder if he'll eventually succumb.
45
u/kitsua 3d ago
His durability and tear down videos are potentially valuable but his unnecessary snark really puts me off. His whole bit in this video about Apple claiming they invent things that already exist just isn’t true, Apple never mentioned any other device or technology or claimed they were the first for anything, it’s just another hater narrative.
24
u/AngelicHanaKurusu 3d ago
I am not even a die hard Apple guy and prefer android, I only moved to apple last year because Apple Card
But I still hate all these people going “Apple claims this is the first foldable”blah blah. Why does he dump more sand in the display and hinges than any other foldable?
zfold ultra got just as much sand. half a cup for the inner display and he just pours the rest into the hinge directly. I would argue the duo got less dirt/sand in the hinge than the samsung.
→ More replies (1)13
u/Yellow_Bee 3d ago
Also, Apple is the one claiming IP68 whereas Samsung claims IP48. So not surprising he'd put more sand on one with the bigger claim vs. the other with the lower claim. It's no different from testing the advertised depth.
Lastly, the finer the sand the more ardous the test. Meaning, it's the small fine sand you should be worrying about more, not how much you can see.

I find his durability tests highly entertaining and I never read too much into it as to call the guy hateful. No one will ever do to a phone whatever he does to these devices, not by mistake anyway.
The Apple says that duo is scratch resistant so Jerry makes fun of this in his trademark way. It's meant as a joke. He does not do the same to the Z fold because samsung explicitly says that the screen IS NOT scratch resistant, so he treats the screen as such (making fun of it too, in his own way).
Lighten up folks.

How else could I describe his utmost despise against apple, in such way that it diverts good points that could be otherwise pointed out, in any other way than "hatred"?
In the end, Nelson is an entertainer. And he does it for entertainment. It's entertaining, but I don't really like when he skips the good stuff that could be potentially pointed out.
But I understand it... it's all entertainment.

I was looking forward to this video just for the inner screen scratch test. Was hoping Apple did a better job with it, but I guess there is only so much that can be done with the materials at hand. I'd be worried to use the apple pencil on this, it's going to scratch the hell out of the screen. I decided to skip it this year in hopes that they improve it next year.

The nanotexture filter is ugly as hell. Blurry and dulled colors. That's a no from me.

Not really a test. None of his “tests” are real tests.. it’s breaking stuff for clicks.. no owner of the duo would ever get in a situation like he tests

I also found the ‘Apple treats every phone like it’s the first of its kind’ annoying when a good chunk of the keynote was spent doing the BlackBerry comparison.
The fingernail test was what I was most curious about though, and it’s an interesting compromise. Yeah, a fingernail will dent the screen, but the matte finish basically makes it invisible.

“Small minority”
Dude is one of the largest tech reviewers, to the point that now i think I’ve seen his videos mentioned in most of the other reviews I’ve seen this year.

u/bloodwalker09 the new YouTube sharing feature is a privacy nightmare.
YouTube > Profile Pic (bottom-right) > Settings (top-right) > Privacy > disable “Channel visibility for shared links”.
I was able to see your whole account from the link you shared.
Thanks for the vid!
