if you're transitioning from single player to multiplayer, play the ranked ladder, do NOT play casual rooms

Do you feel like multiplayer is no fun, because you join a room and get stomped by someone many times better than you, or worse, you just get kicked from the room for being too low?

I think a lot of new players see casual games and ranked games as the two options and assume "oh casual must be for noobs whereas ranked games must be where all the pros are". The assumption is that "ranked" = death and "casual" = a chance of winning (credit to Ok-Acanthisitta-1126 )

That's actually completely backwards.

Casual rooms are best used if you have specific people you already know who are at your level. In fact, they are commonly used at the very high level to setup matches for tourneys and for grinding strats, bc it can be hard for the very best people in aoe3 to find good games in quicksearch. If you are playing alone and you join a random casual game lobby, you will almost certainly either 1. get kicked, 2. get stomped or 3. stomp some poor person who is even more noob than you.

The solution is to play ranked quick search. This is an ingenious system that will quickly figure out your rank, and then match you against people who are a similar rank to you, so you can play fun, competitive games where you will usually end up winning or losing about half the time, unless you start making some actual progress in learning the game. The only thing is you will probably have to lose about 5-10 games before the ELO system will accurately rank you, so don't worry about these early games. In fact, you might even want to just resign quickly in your first 5-10 games just so you can get ranked low sooner, so you can start playing fun games faster.

play ranked, get ranked, start playing enjoyable and competitive matches with people at exactly your own skill level

Question Are there alternative fun ways to play the Aztecs?

Post image
23 Upvotes

I wanna unlock the Total Eclipse cosmetic. Hopefully before I jump back into AoE4 tomorrow. But I find the Aztecs so one-dimensional...

They are one of the strongest Civs in the game, they have some of the best units, best cards, best buffs, best buildings, etc. But I invariably end up playing with a safe mix of Arrows Knights and Skull Knights.

The fact that the Aztecs lack Mercenaries, Outlaws and Revolutions makes adding some alternatives to their gameplay very hard. Maybe there are some Natives or Navy approaches out there that I am not aware of. So please let me know about them!

By the way, I play PVE only basically.

Help No sound after short time in battle

Hi, i just remembered that remaster of this game exist and decided to try it out. When i play campaign at first there is no problem with sounds, but later on it almost completely disappears. Dialogs, unit voicelines, cannons, basically every sound become absent. Is this known issue or is there something wrong with my game?

French vs Jap

Hello everyone!
What strategy would you, as french, adopt vs japanese? I literally win almost everything, excepting solely the games vs jap. I usually play french, mainly rush (that would be also highly advisable vs Japanese as I saw) but still cannot manage to beat them.
I come from many hours played on Legacy so I’m not familiarised at all yet with those new civs. Sweds seemed to be also dangerous.
Thanks!

Tip: Install a sound overhaul mod

The one I used is called Upgraded Sound Package. It changes a load of the main sfx very slightly.

I'm not sure if it's a partial or a total fix, but it's definitely much better.

Strategies Wssup with rushes? (2v2)

Alright so real talk, those who play 2v2 I'd love to know what exactly are you trying to achieve?

More often than not - it doesn't work, you have zero map control and you're unable to get to age 3 because.. well, because you suck.

1v1 is something else, not the topic... but 2v2 - there're team cards, whatever if you're playing with random or teammate please just communicate.. get some team cards in - don't act like you're alone in the match.

Disclaimer: this is by no means a complaint toward any random teammate I got... just saying, in general.

Dependence Mode

Independence Mode gave us a mode with no cards (technically a few cards, just automatic and pre sent). How would you feel about a mode being able to send ALL the cards? And to help speed things up, the experience curve never goes up, so shipments are plentiful and comes blazing fast, especially by late game.

And to expand on that, maybe even ALL the Age Up options. Italians can get both strong Mercenaries AND Leonardo's Tank (and maybe even make it replaceable) for example. Aztecs can have super strong eco, defensive buildings, and War Chief. Federal Americans can have all types of additional card interactions from their States. Asians can build (and rebuild) all Wonders (and by extention, Factories and Forts can be rebuilt by everyone too).

And to go further, card and techs that replaces units simply adds the units without taking existing ones away.

And to go even further, ALL Revolts are available, like they just come with being in the Industrial Age (or whatever Age it unlocks at). There probably needs to be a new card UI for this, cause Mexicans alone have like seven separate decks.

And if I may be so bold, make map Mercenaries and Outlaws available AND viable for everyone even in the late game.

And for added debauchery and excess, make all cards that can be renewed in Imperial infinite, so you can keep sending any and all resource and unit shipments. (Might want to cap Nuestras Señoras at twice though in the name of balance, or not in the name of fun.)

Is Ai weak?

Feels like AOE's II Hd and DE is way harder than III's orginial and DE. Is there a way to improve this, or is the game forever cooked?

A settler wagon (German), a coureur de bois, a Cree coureur de bois (from the settlement next to my camp) and a classic settler. All possible at the same time, thanks to the United States. Not being political here, but couldn't help but notice how beautiful it looks together.

P.S. Still lost to French AI in skirmish mode : (

Does the unit cost translate to balance? eg: units that cost the same perform the same.

Post image
89 Upvotes

On the pic there are 3 similar units, same roles, same price (200 resources). That means they perform the same? Their stats are different, but are the end results the same?

A Russian Cossack is 25% cheaper. That means a Russian Cossack is 75% of a Hussar?

The Hospitaller and the Doppelsoldner cost the same. That means they perform roughly the same, more or less? The Rodelero costs half, so that means each Rodelero is half a Hospitaller?

Are there units that given their price, perform significantly better or significantly worse than units of the same price?

Question Would an Australian aboriginal civ make a sensible addition

Just hypothetically because I'm doing a Pacific DLC what-if.

It seems to be that when this topic is brought up people here will usually say "but they're primitive."

However, AOE3 has always centered around European colonization and usually adds either colonial empires or people that fought those empires, hence the addition of the "primitive" native American civs.

I think a Pacific DLC would be an interesting addition as it could come with lots of new maps, and I read that they were already intending for Australian themed maps.

Question Does French AI always revolt in treaty?

I've played a couple of treaty games with the French and they always seem to revolt, causing them to not collect resources anymore and get steamrolled instantly.
