Preventing the Singularity HELP! My professor is requiring us to use AI for an assignment and I don't know how to refuse in a polite way

Essentially, the assignment is to talk to an AI platform about one of the topics covered in class (macroeconomics) and then critique its understanding of the topic based on your description. I feel as though this assignment is unnecessary and redundant; you could get the same result from speaking with a classmate. Quite often, I gently explain worksheet outcomes to the girl sitting next to me when we are asked to work together. There is a lot of advancement to be made between peers, and I'm sure there's a lot to learn from each other's understanding of these topics. How do I politely and professionally decline to do this assignment while maintaining my grade in the class? I do not want to have to take a zero on this assignment, as it's worth 10% of my grade, but I also don't use AI, especially chatbots, and do not see the value of doing so for this assignment.

Discussion 🗣️ Apple is using AI in photos you take

Post image

I was being lazy and tried to take a picture of my laptop screen to see the progress. Lo and behold, after i took the picture, apple run my photo through AI and give me this slop.

Before this, i tried recording the moon as well, nothing was visible but as soon as i focused a bit more, the moon became high definition and i could see the craters. “Like that samsung video where Samsung just replaced the moon when you trued to take a picture of it” this is crazy. This also means all photos you take are pasted onto AI on apple devices as well… absolutely disgusting

Discussion 🗣️ Don't worry guys you already won the argument with ai bros

• Upvotes

Tbh I don't understand why you keep on arguing with ai bros.. even when their stupid.. there is no point arguing with them because they are stupid and won't learn.. moreoverall it's harder to argue with an idiot than a genius, and ai bros are idiots.. so if you thought about replaying to another ai bro's post, don't worry, they just won't learn.. you already argued enough to win (this only applies to those who keep on replying to ai bros posts and not actual arguments)

AI News 🗞️ One person companies are becoming real

OpenAI's CEO predicted that one-person companies reaching $1B valuations. Today that wild prediction turned out real. Anthropic just bought one. The founder of Mithril Medicine used Claude to take a muscular dystrophy antibody treatment from concept to proof-of-principle in mice in 18 months, with just himself, Claude, and part-time consultants. The technical report is interesting.

Discussion 🗣️ AI has uses

They are limited, but they exist. I want AI in the oceans cleaning the trash and plastic. I want an AI looking for cancer cures 24/7 until we find them, and then move to the next disease. I want AI figuring out how to clean and/or cleaning space debris in orbit. I want AI figuring out interstellar space travel that allows humans to actually explore the stars in a reasonable timeframe. That's... pretty much it. Anything else, with the exception of maybe other ideas like those presented here, absolutely fuck no.

I don't understand these morons who want to AI everything, it will never make sense to me outside of sheer laziness.

Discussion 🗣️ Are you against AI Recomps Decomps and Mods?

I've wanted old 360 games on PC for years at this point.

Emulation exists but some people don't have the newest hardware, and would prefer native performance (even though many of the Recomps do not have native 2009 era performance, and are way heavier).

These AIs make faster and bigger mods, like combining games. But it would basically ruin the hobby long term if people used them for a long time.

But AI is still doing AI stuff. People are relying on Claude, which is Big Tech, and is like part of the technology oligarchy group causing trouble for so many people along with Google, ChatGPT, and Meta.

Also, is this different or similar in principle to AI art?

AI News 🗞️ AI "what"...

AI chatbots are a gimmick, a corporate toy rolled out to look user friendly and “innovative” while delivering no real value to the average person. Without deep technical background and domain knowledge, you can’t leverage them for anything beyond party tricks — regurgitating text, making up confident-sounding answers, and automating low-value tasks you could already do faster yourself. Companies push them because they’re cheap PR and create the illusion of progress, but for most users they’re a subscription fee or wasted staff time chasing prompts that go nowhere. If you don’t already have the expertise to verify, direct, and fix the output, you’re paying to be misled by a machine that can’t think.

With 8 billion people on the planet, we’ve handed out a digital pet rock at scale — one that also steals your ideas and your privacy, then sells or reproduces them for their profit. Every prompt you type trains someone else’s product, and every piece of data you share becomes inventory they can monetize, remix, or feed back to competitors. The interface feels friendly, but friendliness isn’t usefulness. Until you bring your own technical foundation, you’re just renting a toy that performs competence while harvesting your work — and the cost of that performance adds up while the actual work still waits for a human who knows what they’re doing.

Job Loss 🏚️ Why do people only seem to care about artists and coders being impacted by AI?

I'll admit I'm a little bitter. I've been doing freelance design and communications consluting for years. My writing work started drying up before everything else. The fact is press releases, blog posts, copy in general- it was all the first to go when AI was introduced.

Now that we can vibe code or make passable digital images for something like an annual report, the internet is up in arms. It's incredibly frustrating. It's not just writers, either. You've got self-checkout lanes at grocery stores, order kiosks in fast food, and every major tech company is laying people off left and right because of AI innovations. Who's boycotting Taco Bell and Amazon over AI?

It just seems really stupid on some leves. There's all this vitriol and hate aimed at poor schmucks trying to make a buck with AI, which is easy. It doesn't affect your life to hate those ass holes, but people only seem to boycot AI as much as it's convenient to do so.

And I know there are outliers, and if you're one of them, good for you, but if you're reading this, put up or shut up. Time to live your values and stop being a hypocrite.

Discussion 🗣️ Something about Anthropic that seems to go under the radar

You know how you see those game recompilations and ports and everything? Well, here's the dirty little not so secret: you can easily prove that Anthropic pirated basically every video game made in history.

If you prompt it with something like: "Can you fix this bug in the arcade Street Fighter 2?" it'll literally create an environment where it RUNS AND PROBES THE GAME trying to solve the problem. I have logs that can demonstrate this. It literally runs copyrighted arcade games in MAME. It could not do this unless they were storing their own copy of all these games to run in emulation environments.

How are they getting away with this? You're telling me that Nintendo and Capcom are cool with Anthropic pirating every game they ever made so it can perform tasks related to them? Why does the entire planet have to pretend to follow copyright laws when these AI jokers don't? This whole thing is a farce.

Someone needs to expose the fact that these clowns literally DOWNLOADED THE ENTIRE INTERNET. It's largest software piracy operation in the history of the world.

Discussion 🗣️ I have been working on a social media platform to help bring back the 2000s, 2010, 2016 ERA

Thumbnail gallery

Hear me out. There was something different back than. This is something most of us agree on. Time was slower. Life was magical. Stress was minimal. Images looked spontaneous. Positivity overpowered toxicity. I can go On & On (pun intended, OGs will get the reference)

My social media app aims to bring that back that environment:

-There will be no algorithm

-No recommendations

-No likes, comments, followers

-Profiles wont be visible

-No need to login, create account, anything that takes away your data.

What it will have:

-Feed: This is where everyone uploads their images. Its totally randomized. Shuffles every 15 minutes, gives everyone equal chance (status doesnt matter)

-Images: They will be one time view, after viewing them they completely disappear from your feed.

-Reactions: People can react to someone image, but it will only be a single emoji reaction. Reactions only visible to the uploader.

-There is no concept of profile.

-Security and Privacy: Instead of uploading photos to express yourself, you draw from memory and imagination.

This is very vague. Let me know if you have further curiosity, I would love to answer your queries.

The name of this platform is Humanity

Discussion 🗣️ how do you give a rebuttal to the argument of other factories taking up much more water than ai datacenters?

was in a thread just now, where i said ai datacenters take up water, which is why its hated.

a pro ai person brought up that the water usage is a non issue because there were already other industries using up a lot of water, and because of that, i was stumped

whats the rebuttal to this?

TLDR: rebuttal is "theres other things that take up tons of water compared to ai datacenters therefore ai datacenters arent problematic"

Preventing the Singularity AI is the future

We need to acknowledge that AI is the future, it’s not going anywhere, in fact it’s going to get even better thGAWK GAWK GAWK OH SAM ALTMAN YES DADDY GAWK GAWKan it currently is. As long as we can make it through the next, I’d say, 2 years of turmoil, as a GROUP. We won’t be displaced by AI, it’ll be used as a tool and will nevFUCK YES DARIO KEEP GOINGer have the capability to replace humans. It’ll only ever be a tool, similarly to how the calculator replaced slide rules, google replaced libraries, AI will replace… us?
We have spent all of human history trying to build a world where ELOOOOOOOOOON nobody has to work, only end up building a world where nobody is needed. AI doesn’t have to be conscious, it could replace us without ever needing to be. The people who own it will have no economic reason to keep the rest of us alive.

Discussion 🗣️ Does anybody else feel guilty using AI in everyday life?

What I mean is things like intepereting large documents (kind of like a fine-toothed comb to determine if the source contains what I need), or understanding basic concepts, or even using a search engine with an automatic AI overview.

I've currently done a large cutback on how much I use as a student for learning, but I still have this thick underlying guilt when I use AI, even for something as simple as a search assistant. Is this common, or am I just too emotionally involved in my use of technology?

Just got don’t arguing with some sloppers about why it’s stupid to AI generate your grocery list.

A grocery list is a list of foods you like. You know what foods you like. You do not need AI to generate a list of foods you like.

Discussion 🗣️ The Irony of Vibe Coders Being Main Defenders of AI.

Either, the technology is as hyped they claim and they will be next to lose their job and be the main ones to suffer while the world progresses, or it is an overhyped mass data scraping fraud tool that is going to further catalyze capitalism and mass surveillance. I believe it is the later and will be largely used by criminals and the corrupt like with what happened to crypto.

Discussion 🗣️ Let's put our money where our mouths are and support real artists!

This sub is full of complaints about gen-AI used by businesses but that is all it seems to be. Instead of complaining, we need to support real artists and it can be really easy.

  1. Attend art faires

  2. Commission your favorite artist

  3. Help get local governments to commission more murals on public walls

  4. Donate to art schools

I have personally started to be a figure model for a local drawing class. It is so much better to help train human artists than train an LLM.

How else can we support actual artists?

AI "Art" 🖼️ Rant: Why do people believe they're so creative with ai?

What is with all these people that use ai for everything thinking they're the next Shakespeare who was bottle necked by their skills before ai. And now, for some asinine reason, they believe they're finally able to unleash all their creativity with ai? Am I just understanding their logic here??

I just saw the most ai hyped guy on twitter posting about how ai is the future and everyone who disagrees is brainwashed. How's able to be so creative building these games with ai and posting some crappy ai music video he made. Then I see a post how he's worried about people being laid off and it's disturbing to him and unfortunate. He's not sure how long he'll have a job for but he's gonna push harder in building ai because he's "cracked at ai." What logic am i missing here?

In his ai music video post he says:
"██: The Future is Now I'm not much of a bragger but I've never seen better fully agentic music videos than the ones coming out of my Claude Music Video plugin. It's seriously blowing my mind. I rendered all the footage beforehand with ██ and then briefed the plugin on what I was looking for. It was 95% perfect right out of the gate. One small revision. That's it. All the text effects, audioreactive effects, abstract-to-photorealistic transitioning and other overlay effects were not in the videos. Claude did it all with custom shaders it created just for this video. Show me a paid service that can do this. I'll wait. Meanwhile you can have it for free here: ██It should be in the official Claude plugin marketplace any time now as well, as soon as they approve it."

This seems like next-level delusion that you have to force yourself to believe.

Discussion 🗣️ Is There a Website That Documents The Negative Impact That AI is Having On Everything?

For context, I'm designing anti-AI posters to hang up around my school, and I don't want my posters to be baseless posters solely riddled with ethos and fallacies to support the emotional appeal. I feel like it would be more productive for my poster to direct people to a website or something like what DeFlock.org is, which they can use to educate themselves more thoroughly about the impact that AI is having on, just, everything in general.

I've designed three posters as of right now, so if there isn't one centralized website documenting the negative impact that AI is having on things in a general sense, it would also be good to know if there is a website which goes in-depth into the impact that AI is having on the environment, or a website that goes in-depth into the impact that AI is having on critical thinking.

Those are the two main topics that I am trying to convey on my posters, so if there is a website that is dedicated to addressing either of these topics, with more depth than just a single article or whatever, then I'd be VERY thankful if someone could point me in its direction because I've unfortunately had no luck so far.
