LLMs are peak mediocrity

35

u/LorryToTheFace 14h ago

Makes you realise why so many people love them. If your capabilities are below average, being able to churn out 'product' of an average quality will feel like an improvement.

u/legendwolfA 14h ago

And a lot of people who think AI will liberate them don't understand this: good art is good not because the idea itself is good but its because of that plus refinery. In whatever, music, games, movie production, you do have to review and edit your shit a lot before it get good

They're fast tracking through the refinery process thinking it doesn't matter but that's where mid becomes good and good becomes great

They think personal improvement is no longer necessary since AI is improving for us. But I am not content with stagnation.

LLMs the ones who do all the work in many of these "games," but obviously, if you can make the minimum effort, there are ways to get the most out of it, but unfortunately, they don't care about that.

LLMS scale with the user, so if you get mediocre outputs, it's because you are an mediocre person.

u/NyakoChan51 15h ago

But... But reddit users told me AI is the future and anyone who regrets it is just self sabotaging

We shouldn't be extremists; if a technology can achieve the bare minimum, then it can do more. The problem is that many people already settle for the bare minimum, since they know nothing about programming or game design.

6

u/NyakoChan51 13h ago

That technology is literally stealing my job oportunities right now on tech fields because is cheaper that hiring an actual person. Sorry for sounding extremist but I don't like that a machine is stealing my job oportunities

u/Embarrassed-Coast-32 13h ago

Excuse me, I'm also part of the tech industry, why do you say that? There are several studies that show AI is much more expensive than humans, and news reports that prove it. Are you a frontend developer or something like that?

2

u/NyakoChan51 13h ago

I'm a junior dev that has just graduated from college, I'm the most easily replazable part in any tech work

Another day another Sakurai W

1

u/ZayParolik 1h ago

Next W will be when Smash 6 comes out

14

u/Skate_faced 14h ago

Yes it can.

But an artist has to make it first.

So that the Ai can steal it. So a moron can say it's their originality at work.

That came from a monthly slop sub. That stole all the work.

Like duh, guys.

First we got the Pope throwing bars in Magnificat Humanitas. Then we got Sakurai tweeting bars. Peak.

3

u/New-Two-1349 14h ago

I think he'd also be against those AI decompilations that merge 2 games, as well.

u/dondashall 14h ago

Least surprising take ever if you know anything about him. Still great he speaks out though, more big names need to.

If anyone is looking for games made without AI, we have a list for you over here https://noailist.org/games/

2

u/Wooden_Instruction_1 11h ago

Correct take here. AI is regurgitated slop.

Fired by nintendo in 1 year.

12

u/BebeFanMasterJ 14h ago

He can't be fired when he's not even employed by them in the first place.

He's a contract worker who pops in, makes Kirby/Kid Icarus/Smash, and leaves.

1

u/DamirVanKalaz 3h ago

And he's supposedly done with Smash, and tragically I doubt they'll bring back the peak that was Kid Icarus because post-Iwata death Nintendo is scared of making games people want that aren't regularly scheduled new console releases, so he's just here for Kirby at this point.

1

u/BebeFanMasterJ 3h ago

I mean I wouldn't go that far.

They brought back Star Fox, made a new Donkey Kong game, a new Yoshi game, a new Tomadachi Life, and a new Rhythm Heaven. None of these are regular releases.

1

u/DamirVanKalaz 3h ago

That's fair I guess, though I wouldn't count the """new""" Star Fox, personally. It's just Star Fox 64, again, which, itself, is a remake of Star Fox SNES. The last 3 games in the franchise have all been rehashes of 64. It's more than tiring at this point.

I wouldn't really count DK and Yoshi as those still fall under the "mario" banner. You're always guaranteed to get some Mario spinoffs of some kind with the IP's other characters. It's the other IPs that aren't Mario, Zelda, Metroid, or Kirby that have to beg and plead to be remembered, and even Metroid only recently came back from the void.

I'd somewhat give you Tomadachi Life, but I'd argue that it also falls under the "Mii" IP that Nintendo has kept alive and well since it was created on the Wii.

Rhythm Heaven, though, I can completely agree with you on. That's a very valid one to call out as an exception to what I said, but even then, that's the only real exception on the Switch 2 so far, and the Switch 1 didn't fare much better.

Japan is not fan as a whole of AI. It as to do with the cultural value of taking pride in craftmanship.

1

u/MuNansen 13h ago

It can't even really copy ideas well. Would be like asking you to copy a style of writing in a language you don't speak. You could visually mimic the lettering and the phrasing, but nothing more in-depth than that.

u/Weird_Albatross_9659 13h ago

Tbh EA sports was churning out the same games for decades with no original content

1

u/darkmodexc3 1h ago

thats just ea sports

1

u/DogeMoustache 12h ago

Shigeru Miyamoto said the same thing in different words, but allso said that people should distinct creativity and doing the work, because people now confuse doing the work with creativity

1

u/Shim8080 12h ago

Nice ! So there's nothing to worry about

1

u/Beginning_Bobcat4422 10h ago

finally a rich person that doesn't glaze AI

1

u/Eazy12345678 8h ago

humans just copy ideas from other humans

nintendo has long history of being anti consumer. dont act like they are your friend

How this is not the ONLY take is beyond me.

u/_PykeGaming_ 4m ago

Tbf the guy made 8 different Kirby games.

-1

u/Jolly-Score-821 13h ago

I think all those mathematicians that got blown out last month are feeling pretty happy about it. I think gamers will be the same.

-2

u/Savings-Pomelo-6031 13h ago

Am I the only one that finds it ironic that SSB just takes existing character IPs and makes them fight though lol

-4

u/000TSC000 13h ago

Big talk coming from the guy whose last good game released in 2001.

5

u/kriscrossapplesause 12h ago

Still better than anything an AI has created.

-11

u/Sure_Distribution809 14h ago

I got nothing but love and respect for Sakurai, he is what game designers should aim to be, but there is a notable amount of irony of him talking about originality when he hasn't made an original game in well over 30 years. I fear this comment stems from ignorance of what AI is and how it can be used.

11

u/FunkiestOfKongs 14h ago

Play Kid Icarus Uprising and tell me again this man hasn't put out a single unqiue game in 30 years

-4

u/Sure_Distribution809 14h ago

I have and it's a great game but the IP existed for decades prior to him touching it, thus not original.

8

u/FunkiestOfKongs 14h ago

Wild take, it's a completely new and original take on the franchise that plays completely differently not just when compared to the rest of the franchise, but any videogame I've ever played. I can't name a single other hybrid on rails shooter/3rd person action game

3

u/spookyhardt 14h ago

Original games can be made using existing IPs. I feel like you aren’t understanding that.

4

u/spookyhardt 14h ago

Making a sequel that introduces new ideas and mechanics is not the same as making the same game over again. It does take creativity and originality to make a series to innovate with each entry and that’s what Sakurai does. Look at the last 5 Kirby games and tell me they aren’t completely different kinds of games.

-2

u/Sure_Distribution809 14h ago

Can you point to a single original mechanic?
