Mod Announcement Politics and this Subreddit
Hi all,
I know there has been a lot of discussion, especially recently, about politics in this sub. Before reading any further, please know this -- politics are and will always be allowed on this subreddit. Star Wars (particularly Andor) is inherently political. We as mods believe it would be a disservice to you all to not allow discussion of the political themes of this show and the connections it makes to our real world...even the difficult ones.
This post is not changing that whatsoever.
However, we do understand that some of the community doesn't wish to see those types of posts, and that is OK. Some of us use social media (even Reddit) as escapism from the real world, and there is nothing wrong with that. We are seeing an uptick in reports on posts of a political or sensitive nature, and despite efforts to cull said reports the mods are overwhelmed. This is only worsened by the fact that we have a handful of people on the subreddit going around and spamming reports - most of them being baseless.
Reddit doesn't give us the best tools when it comes to managing reports on posts and comments, so all we can really do about that is ask you all to use the report button sincerely. The more reports that we get that are unsubstantiated or are just pissed-off-reports, the harder it is for us to recognize the real ones. But I digress.
The point of this post is to announce a new sidebar option on the subreddit, a content filter. If you click on the "No Politics" button, you will be shown a version of the subreddit that does not include any posts with the Real World Politics flair. The hope is that this will make it easier for those who do not wish to see those posts (either all the time or sometimes) a way to enjoy the subreddit. We want as many of you to be a part of this community as possible. Remember, this is a 100% VOLUNTARY option. If you do nothing, you will continue to see the sub as you always have.
Thanks,
- sud

For the Smokey and the Bandit fans out there. Inspired by a comment a few days ago about this scene.
I trimmed it to the length of the song and few parts just lined up themselves. Enjoy. (SOUND ON!)

General Discussion Drop your favorite line from the series. I’ll go first:
“If you’re not a rebel spy, you’ve missed your calling.”

General Discussion The “making them proud of you” connection makes the visual rhyming of these three images hit hard Spoiler
The beach scene in Rogue One is frequently compared now to the final scene of Andor and that was clearly a conscious choice from the director and director of photography. It’s also echoed in the scene on Niamos at the end of season 1 ep 11. But the dialogue context makes it even more poignant.
In that top image, Cassian has just called home to Ferrix, and said to Xanwan: “Tell Maarva I'm okay. Tell her I'm thinking about her. She’d be proud of me. And I'll get back as soon as I can." Only then does Xanwan break the terrible news that he’s too late.
Moments after the bottom image from Rogue One, Cassian says to Jyn: “Your father would have been proud of you”. So now we think back to that moment on Niamos from five years previously and imagine Cassian comforting Jyn in a way that would have been central to him ever since that time. You can imagine him thinking of Clem too. He knows how important a parent’s pride is.
Bix’s sacrifice was especially painful as it involved betrayal of her own morality in addition to giving up something she holds dear. In the middle image she doesn’t yet know of Cassian’s imminent death but you can certainly imagine her finding out one day and comforting herself amidst the inevitable guilt with knowing that their child can be proud of their father, the man she had so much faith in - faith that ultimately mirrored Maarva’s, that Cassian would be “an unstoppable force for good”.
The cinematography in each shot is exquisite. Whether sunrise or sunset, or Death Star explosion: “I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I’ll never see”. Some children and some parents live but others die. All trying to “make it worth it” and “try” because “rebellions are built on hope”.
General Discussion How do you think the relationship between Nemik and Luke would have been if they had met?
We already know that Nemik is an idealist whose manifesto spread throughout the galaxy. At some point, Luke might have heard it or learned about it. But what would the relationship between the two have been like if Nemik hadn’t died and had eventually met Luke?

Real World Politics Paris protests
Just finished season 1, found this sign at Porte D’italie (Paris) last Saturday and I think it’s beautiful.

General Discussion Andor | Luthen Rael’s Monologue (spoilers season 1 maybe) Spoiler
youtube.comI knew this series was well rated, but i was saving it for later, i knew there were only two seasons, yesterday i started watching, but this monologue had some powerful lines
"I’m condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them. I burn my decency for someone else’s future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I’ll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude.
So what do I sacrifice?
Everything!"
Looking forward to season 2! dont spoil me lol
General Discussion Samm's redeeming act Spoiler
*Spoiler alert if you've not watched season 2.
4th or 5th rewatch, and I only first noticed that it was Samm (who killed Cinta with a carless blaster shot in the "What a Festive Evening" episode) driving the transport vehicle that saves Cassian from the K-2SO droid during the Ghorman massacre. It may not wipe the ledger, but it's a nice redemption arc, the result of which will reverberate through the Galaxy through Cassian's later actions on Scarif.

Question Rewatching Rogue One, why did Krennic land so far away from Erso's hut? Is he stupid?

Question What’s your favorite obscure prop, set piece, or background detail from the show?
Mine is from S1E6 where you can see the planet (Aldhani) about to pass through the belt on the monitor in the control tower.

General Discussion Syril in Palmo: so much world-building in a single frame
I particularly like the vintage speeder bike with its 1940s vibes and the cook over on the left. To the right, patrons enjoying a quick caf like in an Italian espresso bar where it’s always cheaper if you stand. The population are racially homogenous too; a deliberate casting decision. Very much giving a vibes of Vichy France and northern Italian cities in WW2 (Turin was a big influence for the café in the plaza). Beautiful set design too with the wide street and distinctive architecture.
Syril at the centre looking so at home in his beautifully tailored coat shows how much he thinks he’s found his place here. It kind of feels like he’s finally building some kind of independent identity for himself, away from the influence of his mother and even from Dedra. Of course it’s all a deception, but I think his heart is fully in it and he sees himself as ultimately protecting these people and their way of life from “outside agitators”. So very ironic.
Theory & Analysis Power dynamic in this scene
This scene Mon is asking Davo for her money to effectively be laundered (simplification).
I’m not very versed in high class hosting etiquette, but assuming everyone is drinking the same thing, they should all be drinking of the same style of glass.
Perrin & Mon’s glasses are typical of a whiskey glass, and Davo’s is taller. Very interesting little detail showing that he’s above them and he has the upper hand in the conversation.
Real World Politics Congratulations Serbia! Down with the corrupt autocrat!

Nothing makes me happier than moments like these.
Movements like these can free us from a future were people like Luthen doesn't have to burn their decency, and we don't have the sacrifices of Mon, Bix and Cassian.
And it was done by students too! Like so many other protest movements historically around the world.
Autocracy is not inevitable. Liberté, égalité, fraternité can still rule supreme.

Real World Politics Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere: Lula defeats Trump ally Bolsonaro, keeping Brazil left as Latin America shifts right

General Discussion This scene is so funny to me. It’s like the highway patrol pulling over James Bond for a traffic stop, because they don’t know his car is packed to the brim with ridiculous gadgets.

General Discussion I felt sympathy for Partagaz's end?
Even though I know he was well aware about the Emperor's evil plans in detail with no ambiguity, I still sympathize with his end like I did with Syril. Syril's character clearly deserved that sympathy tho, a deluded believer with a working conscience nonetheless. But Partagaz's conscience felt repressed out of fear? Felt like he was capable of being a good man and could very well be on the other side if there was a catalyst taking him to that path? Didn't seem like a psycho like the others lol, anyone else who shares this sentiment?
Real World Politics We are the Brazilians, the galaxy is watching
Today is the day Brazil is going to choose in the second round of elections between being a puppet within an empire in Latin America or remain free and sovereign.
As Nemik would say, tyranny requires constant effort. Bolsonaro already tried a coup and his son will try to do it again. There are reports about Bolsonaro supporter mayors reducing the fleet of public transportation in order to block Lula voters to reach the ballots, people with red shirts (red is the color of left-wing in Brazil) being harassed in the streets.
We'll resist. Freedom is a pure Idea.

General Discussion Mon Mothma arranging her daughter's marriage is the darkest move any "good guy" makes in Star Wars
Andor spoilerish if you haven't watched. She ties Leida to the Sculdun family partly to cover up where the Rebellion's money is coming from. Chandrilan tradition gives her the excuse, but we all know what's really going on.
Necessary sacrifice or the coldest thing any rebel ever did? I genuinely can't decide, and I think that's the point.

General Discussion Tbf to other SW shows the talent they got for Andor was amazing.
I love Andor and as much credit as Gilroy deserves they were able to get a writer from the Americans, the set designer of Chernobyl, and a huge budget.
Its HBO production.
