REQUEST RE: DECEASED PEOPLE Stuck at great-father because he was in orphanage

I don’t know what information I would need to provide but my great grandfather was in an orphanage called St. John’s Orphan Asylum from a census in 1910 and was 10yo at the time. His name was Edward Henry Walsh Sr and was born on Feb. 17 1900(may be slightly different). I believe he may have been born in Ireland due to me not being able to find his birth certificate. I do not know if his family was deceased or couldn’t take care of home anymore. If anyone can help me find more information about him or his parents, I would greatly appreciate it.( or a way to access Irish records)

GENERAL Looking for a missing branch of my Albanian family — Aliosha Spahiu, possibly 1949 in Chelyabinsk, Soviet Union

Hello everyone,

I'm writing this post in the hope that someone, somewhere, might be able to help my family uncover a story that has remained unresolved for generations.

According to the family information passed down to us, a man named Islam Spahiu, son of Ali, went to Chelyabinsk in the Soviet Union to study topography. During his time there, he reportedly had a relationship with a woman named Anna, and they may have had a son around 1949, known within our family as Aliosha.

Unfortunately, we have no documents confirming these details. We don't know whether Aliosha was his official name, what happened to him, or whether he had descendants of his own.

All we have are the fragments of a family story and the hope that they might lead us somewhere.

I understand that these clues are limited, and I don't want to present family recollections as established historical facts. Still, I believe it's worth trying. Perhaps someone familiar with Albanian families who lived or studied in the Soviet Union, historical records from Chelyabinsk, or Russian naming conventions might be able to point us in the right direction.

I'm not expecting anyone to solve this mystery overnight. Even a suggestion about which archives to consult, which spelling variations to search for, or where to look for historical records would mean a great deal to us.

Maybe this story will lead nowhere. But maybe someone will recognize a detail that we have been unable to understand for decades.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any advice or research leads would be deeply appreciated.

REQUEST RE: LIVING PEOPLE Looking for help

Good Morning,

I have recently received documents on my adoption.

Through various searches I have found that my mother passed in 2015, but my father is still alive (no obituary can be found).

I’m trying to find answers and I’m making myself crazy not finding any or because I’m not listed as a authorized person I cannot even get records for my mother to know why she passed or any next of kin information that would help me bring peace and closure to my story.

I have 2 other siblings one that was adopted to the same family as me but we have a brother that we know nothing about.

I’m going crazy trying to find help and answers to questions and getting no where.

Any advice or help or anything really and truly would help.

Thanks and I appreciate everyone

GENERAL Committed registry office fraud twice and then seemingly disappeared.

Hello,

So- I'm looking into my 2X great aunt, Minnie Jessie Warriner. in 1898 she had a baby called Ernest Charles Warriner out of wedlock, she registered her brother, Robert Charles Warriner as Ernest's father.

It seems that in 1901 she was living with her brother and her child, and was correctly marked on the 1901 census as his sister, and Ernest as his nephew.

On the 1911 census something strange happened. Robert was married by then, and Ernest was still living with him as his nephew along with his growing family. Minnie, however, was not. Also, they'd changed Ernest's birth date from 1898 to 1900.

It seems that Minnie had reregistered Ernest's birth, but instead of her brother (Robert Charles Warriner), she'd changed the "father"'s name to "Charles Warriner", and put her own maiden name as her mother's maiden name "Mitchell", putting "Warriner" down as her (Minnie's) "married name". And then... it just seems like Minnie disappeared and I can't figure out where. Maybe an asylum? Maybe she changed her name and fled? What could have happened?

UK/ England BTW.

Edit: They're 2 different babies (1898 baby died on the day he was born), but neither 'father' registered on the certificates is the real father.

Robert is the informant for the 1898 baby, and Minnie herself is the informant for the 2nd.

REQUEST RE: DECEASED PEOPLE Request for Assistance Locating Uncle's Records

I'm trying to identify records for genealogy purposes, for my use, my children and my sister's kids. I've been looking for records related to my Jewish great uncle William Salzmann, and his marriage to my Austrian great aunt, Anna Horacek (see below). Their marriage took place at the height of Germany's campaign to annex Austria, the Anschluß, in 1938.

My great grandmother, Anna Matz, turned her daughter Anna Salzmann and her new son-in-law, William Salzmann in to the Nazis. The entire family was imperilled, and my Grandmother, Grandfather, my mother, my Great Aunt, and Great Uncle all fled, with the S.S. in pursuit. They escaped. They relocated.

So, the big score here would be the marriage license of my great aunt and uncle, but also chasing them around during their escape from WW II Europe, and documenting their passage, secondarily. These are the stories I grew up with around the Sunday evening dinner table, with Grandma, Great Aunt, granddaughters, nieces, and my Mom in attendance.

I have all of the family's original birth, marriage, and legal immigration records at this point. Even so, it can be challenging to find them listed in European registries.

Marriage Record of William Salzmann and Anna Horacek, Year: 1938.

It might be in Austria or Berlin. My grandmother told me the marriage year; it was the year Austria was annexed to Germany (1938).

Bride: Anna Horacek (also Horác'ek), DOB: 13 Feb.1911, Baptism 26 Feb. 1911. Pfarre: Zwischenbrücken- Katholic

Mother- Anna Matz DOB: 10 Oct. 1879; Father- Alois Horác'ek DOB: 11???1863. Married 30 Sep. 1901, Wien III, St. Johann

Groom: William Salzmann, DOB: 1912 in Austria. Jewish, a physician. Married Anna in 1938, and both fled Austria, and emigrated from France to Port au Prince, Haiti. I have the ship's transit log listing William from Port au Prince to New York in 1947. Anna also escaped.

Mother: not known, yet.

Father: not known, Dr. ????? Salzmann, DOB: unk. A physician, Jewish, living in Port au Prince, Haiti around WW2, 1938-1945.

Many, many thanks in advance for any assistance! If there is other info needed, please let me know.

INVESTIGATOR VERIFICATION Introduction...

My name is Friðrik, located in Iceland. I sold a small company I owned a few years ago, and with much more spare time than I used to have, I have taken up the hobby of helping people interpret their DNA results to answer questions - usually the identity of their biological fathers.

So far...

  • 30 cases fully solved and confirmed (by "confirmed", I mean for example that someone was asked to test and was clearly a half-sibling).
  • 12 cases probably solved, but lacking final DNA confirmation.
  • 14 cases being worked on - in most cases waiting for one or more other people to take a test, to distinguish between two or more candidates (typically brothers).
  • 2 cases that I have been unable to solve for years - simply because there are absolutely no close relatives who have tested (no matches sharing over 100 cM), and combined with the persistent endogamy here, there is little I can do but wait.

I am only taking cases in Iceland or involving people of Icelandic ancestry - that is where my expertise is, and more-importantly my data, as I am in the somewhat enviable position of having the pretty much comprehensive "on-paper" trees of every single person with "deep roots" in my country. This, combined with some custom-written software, means that half of the time I can go from getting the DNA test results to having a very short list of candidates for the bio-father (usually a set of brothers) in about 15 minutes.

So, in the (unlikely) event that you have any problem involving Iceland, I can help - otherwise, well, I may be able to share my expertise on certain things, but that's it.

REQUEST RE: DECEASED PEOPLE New York Subway worker records 1929-1933

Mystery of DNA.. my Irish mother given away at birth. Unwed mother used fake name on birth certificate. Turns out my bio Irish grandfather lived in New York! He worked on subway as “track man”. How can I find more info on him?

Hello! Through DNA I have found both by Irish grandparents. I was born in Boston, MA. My mother’s birth was always a mystery with a forged birth certificate and no father listed. She was raised by a lovely family who must have taken her at birth through a verbal agreement. No formal adoption. DNA worked its magic and now I know my birth grandparents. They mystery my mother could not even begin to know. She died 47 years ago at age 44. My birth grandfathers side is in denial. I just want to know more about him. Amazingly he worked on the New York subway system as a track man. From 1925 census. He is Peter O’Reilly from Cavan born March 3, 1903. For him being in New York:

\*\*Arrived\*\* NY Sep 30, 1929 and lived with his cousin Michael Traynor 1093 Franklin Ave Bronx New York

\*\*1930\*\* Age 27 \*\*Residence\*\*
9 Apr 1930 • Bronx, Bronx, New York
Marital Status: Single; Relation to Head: Boarder 574 Boston Road Bronx, NY

\*\*1931\*\* Age 27 \*\*Naturalisation Declaration\*\*
12 Mar 1931 • New York
433 East 147 St. Bronx NY

I have no proof of when he left and it can’t be proved when he arrived back in Ireland. But my mother would have been conceived August 1933. His grandson did DNA and he and I match as 1/2 first cousins.

I would think there would be documents on subway workers specifically. He could have worked October 1929-1931.. or 1932. Maybe there is termination work that would prove when he left.

Thank you, and I would appreciate any help and direction.

GENERAL Need help finding info about one of my ancestors

Hello guys!

I’ve been stuck on my 4th great grandfather Lawrence Montgomery Attaway and I need some help finding who his parents were. He was born in 1824 in Alabama. He married Catherine Jordan Tillinghouse about 1850 and had three children; Mary, George, and Lawrence. He enlisted as a captain in the Confederate Army on 11 Feb 1862 and died of disease on 9 July 1862. Many online family trees list his mother as Isabella Kyle although there aren’t any records proving this.

REQUEST RE: DECEASED PEOPLE Need assistance in confirming third great grandparents

After months of research I think I found my second great grandmother’s parents but cannot confirm 100% without a birth record. Is it possible with Ancestry Thrulines to confirm this? I built my tree based on this assumption and I do have some DNA matches coming from that but how do I know it’s not just random? Could anyone look at it for me that knows what to look for?

REQUEST RE: DECEASED PEOPLE Mysterious Grandfather

Wow! I am excited to find this sub!

My Grandfather has always been a mystery - my Grandmother would not talk about him at all other than to tell us he was in the Air Force as a Military Police, from Texas (or at least they met in Texas), and his name was Roy (possible Royce?) David Hicks.

My Grandma was born in 1930 and passed away in 2005, we are from Rochester, New York, but she had met him when she was on a trip to Texas and my Mother was born as a result in late 1954. So they must have met sometime in 1953/4. For awhile I wasn't sure if they were married, but I've since come to believe they were, at least for a bit of time. My grandmother's name was Elizabeth Marie Root.

We've never been able to solve this mystery and I have always wondered.

A few times I've thought I've come close, even finding a grave in the south that I thought might be a match but have never been able to confirm it at all.

I would love if anyone could point to resources that might help? I got into ancestry awhile ago and have an extensive Ancestry.com tree, but this has still always been something I could never solve.

I'm not sure that I can provide any more information, but here is the information on my Grandmother:

Name: Elizabeth "Betty" Marie Hicks (nee Root) (I think when she was younger she went by Lizzie instead of Betty)

DOB: February 3, 1930 (Rochester, NY)

Death: November 4, 2005 (Rochester, NY)

Burial: Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rochester, NY

She has always lived in Rochester, NY but her time meeting my grandfather would have been 1952-1954 in (or near) Texas

I am a Cinematographer, I know a lot about my great grandfathers story in world war 2. I would like to contact someone's family to ask them more about their great grandfathers encounter with mine. I would love to create a film/documentary with information on both sides. How do I find the pilots next of kin so that I can find their current family?
