Technically this isn't a video of me, as I'm a middle-aged lady, but it's also a video of me.

This meme reddit has been the most eye opening thing on the planet. I always cursed myself for my clumsiness and have been accused of being careless when I really do care a lot but no matter how much I try something will inevitably fall and break and it feels awful.
To others it may be weird to cry over a broken plate but to me it feels like smoking gun evidence of my motoric function incompetence.

The word is proprioception, and for folks with ADHD it's often a bit poor!
To add to that, I tend to mindlessly destruct things as a stim too, so objects beware!

I don't get asked to help others moving anymore. I was so anxious to not break anything my friends wanted me to carry, but somehow I still managed to damage it.
2
u/rnottaken 11h ago
A friend of mine literally told me one time that "she puts away everything fragile when i came around". That kinda hurt
2
u/Neppingten 10h ago
It always does hurt. Not sure what hurts more though. People not trusting me with their stuff or the fact I know I'd unwillingly damage it.
2
u/LordoftheFuzzys 1d ago
When I was a kid my mom called me Destructo the Magnificent. That shit hurts.

I bought a gaming laptop advertised for its durability. When I went to the computer store to buy it, multiple sales people tried to sway me toward daintier models and I was just like "Nope. I need this. Trust me. It will do perfectly well as a stardew valley machine and it won't immediately break if I kick it accidentally"
3
u/ASatyros 2d ago
Which laptop dod you get?
6
u/museumlad 2d ago
Asus tuf, I am not especially techy, I just needed a machine that would run heavily modded stardew without a hiccup

u/Maxxtherat 2d ago
So, why does this seem to happen to us? 😭
57
u/lvioletsnow 2d ago
Poor proprioception (remembering where your limbs are in space), not paying attention to force exerted, and general forgetfulness.
I was actually expecting him to accidentally yeet the mug, but this was funnier.
18
u/AmputeeHandModel 2d ago
Yeah sometimes I forget I am 3-dimensional and not a floating point in space. I bump into things a lot. So much that my pediatrician was going to call CPS but then they realized I needed glasses. It wasn't the glasses, it was the ADHD. ADHD Walk
3
u/PerpetuallyDistracte 1d ago
I literally just noticed a walnut sized bruise on the side of my hip from bumping into something and I have no idea where it came from. Happens all the time. Hips, knees and elbows whack into things so often that it doesn't even register anymore.
3
u/rinkirankkaus 22h ago
That "pockets and belt hoops getting stuck in things" hit me right in the fucking soul. The fucking soul, man.

One very young coworker of mine said I lack spatial awareness. I do. I live in a house that 25 years older than my own mother and I walk into the door frames THAT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE! The house has not been remodeled since I've been around, livin' there every day. Same with the gate in the yard. Oh there's a gate? Let me just gouge my hip on the hinge that's been there for years.
Also I just spent 20 minutes looking up different features on a fence gate. I would not have gone with hinge. U-locky system works best for me.

I’ve developed a minor superpower of catching things I knock over. It only works like half the time but that means I’m 50% less destructive!
3
u/Maxxtherat 22h ago
I have good reflexes so if something falls I'll catch it like 90% of the time, but the amount of stuff I break in other ways is annoying. I feel like if I look at shit, I break it 🫠
24
u/dover_oxide 2d ago
It's this very thing that also makes us good at fixing shit. It probably won't look good anymore but it'll work
45
u/OddestCabbage 2d ago
This is the reason I used plastic dinnerware wellllll into adulthood.
21
u/Kurokotsu 2d ago
I just hate doing dishes and the emotional cost of washing forks every few days is higher than the $4 for 100 plastic forks Amazon gives.
4
2
u/Cheesemagazine 1d ago
I felt like this for a while but my worry about the amount of plastic waste I create drives me too crazy. Bullied myself with a pair of nice dish gloves to keep from the Wet Food Touch
2
u/Kurokotsu 1d ago
I could toss a fork after every single bite of food and still not make a noticeable amount of waste compared to the biggest companies causing problems in the world.
1
u/Cheesemagazine 1d ago
Ok? I just care about making less waste. My coping method is dish gloves. Yours is ready-made forks. Whatever.
19
u/justhangingaroud 2d ago
I dropped my favourite mug and it landed on my only other mug, breaking both
15
u/Public-Entrance8816 2d ago
I tell myself it'll be different with every nice delicate thing I buy.
See also: I'm definitely not going to lose this one.

Anyone else destroy chairs? I'm not an especially big guy, maybe 180 lbs at most usually, but I absolutely mangle chairs of all types.
Not sure if it's the ADHD or if I just am especially good at sinking every ounce of my weight in to the weakest points.

u/rainbow__raccoon 1d ago
Some people sit “hard”. I had to realize I throw myself into couches and beds and I had to ease up on that.
Edit to add: people with adhd can have bad proprioception (knowing where your body is in space) so that’s why this stuff is common.
5
u/Cognitive_Spoon 1d ago
I just start falling at the bed, frfr. Gravity take me I am no longer animate
4
u/InitialLandscape 2d ago
First thing I do with a new office chair is removing all that blue thread locker on the screws, and replace it with red loctite. The one they use for car engines.
1
u/Happy_Confection90 1d ago
Unsure. What's considered a good lifespan for a basic office chair, 3, 4 years?

u/Pm_me_clown_pics3 2d ago
A week ago I was visiting my mom and she made tea for me. I took one sip and set the cup down and it cracked horizontally and leaked tea all over the table.

u/nearfrance 1d ago
Yes , can relate. Constantly drop and break things. As a teenager broke a safety glass pane in a door with my shoulder, the old style with wire reinforcement. Put a nail through my foot by standing on a plank that I was working on.
2
u/Neppingten 1d ago
Yes the door thing me too. Like a door with a rectangle of glass inside. I was like 1 second away from the door walking casually, no stumbling or anything. Then space time shenanigans and suddenly the glass was broken
15
u/Spiritual-Handle7583 2d ago
Can't relate to this one, I rarely break anything. Took 4+ years for my last phone to die
7
u/Giraffe-colour 2d ago
Same here. Grew up in poverty to maybe that’s why I take such good care of my own stuff. I also have good reflexes and hand eye coordination. I do still bump into shit all the time though apparently (apparently because I don’t remember ever doing it), my legs currently look like bruised bananas…
4
u/simonhunterhawk 2d ago
i also take good care of my stuff (replace my phone every 5 years usually bc it slows down or the battery goes bad) but i still live in fear of breaking my laptop every day by leaving something on the keyboard even though i never do 😅 mostly bc my first few smart phones died in horrible ways that were completely out of my control
i am just saying adhd doesn’t give a shit we live in poverty that’s why the adhd tax is so harsh
3
u/Spiritual-Handle7583 2d ago
I definitely didn't grow up well off and it sounds like we're cut from the same cloth. I broke my toe on a door frame recently but I can also snatch mosquitoes out of the hair with my bare hands so, I think my reflexes are alright lol
5
u/Footloose_Feline 2d ago
Too anxious to break my things. My phone case is made of motorcycle helmet material.
1
5
u/ssquirt1 1d ago
If I had $5 for every time I’ve dropped my phone…
Seeing people walk around using their phones without cases gives me anxiety lol.
2
u/Spiritual-Handle7583 1d ago
OMG same. My new phone came in the mail before the case did so I set it up and put it back in the box lol
3
u/aWizardsTail 2d ago
I've had mine for 12 yeas lol. Still rocking my Galaxy S2 lol
1
u/Spiritual-Handle7583 2d ago
Holy shit! My longest run was with an A5
1
u/aWizardsTail 2d ago
lol, I mean, I will admit that I use my cell phone like a house phone and hate having it on me and honestly hate having it even charged most of the time. I didn't even get a cell phone for like a decade after everyone else did lol. I wish things were like they used to be, life felt so much more simple before cell phones but I do get it. I'm a PC guy so people having a computer in their pocket is cool and all but just not for me.

I'll tack on for others like us lol
ADHD has made me hyper-aware enough of myself and my surroundings that I can kinda be "reckless." Sure, it mostly leaves me paralyzed from doing the things that I want to do and actively ruins my life, but you can't be clumsy if your brain isn't capable of inattention to your surroundings. Most of the time I use my phone without a case because it's less bulky and part of the reason I buy things is because I like how they look.

I can’t buy expensive sunglasses because if I don’t forget them somewhere, they’ll still be smashed within three weeks. New shirts will have stains on them within twenty minutes. I regularly am bleeding somewhere on my body and don’t realize until I happen to glance at it or someone tells me. So yeah.
6
u/KestrelTank 2d ago
I buy the same type of sunglasses at like $20ish on Amazon. They just work for me and I can replace them easy.
My husband on the other hand has expensive sunglasses and the other day he was like “We really need to get get you a nicer set of sunglasses”
He paused for about 2 seconds before realizing his error.
“….No … no we don’t”

u/olagorie 1d ago
This is why I always carry my mobile phone on a cord around my neck.
Total game changer.
It also helps finding the sucker.

I wasn't paying attention yesterday and I knocked a bottle of balsamic vinegar out of the cabinet and it fell and went fucking everywhere. Flowed under the stove so I had to move that and clean under it. Ugh.

I've always be a human stress test in a box. Didn't survive me for 5 minutes? Not going to survive general humanity for 5 years
3
u/GoatApprehensive9606 2d ago
This is precisely why I bought a stainless steel, gasket sealed water bottle and all my glasses are borosilicate, it makes life a little easier.
3
u/Lost_Historian2344 2d ago
I'm the reason at work we had to buy expensive well made gear, if you wanted to know if something was well made just let me use it normally for an hour 😐

u/DamePants 2d ago
I’m so good at doing this I can even find a way to make software stop working in the strangest ways.

Bruh I just got my e rig thru the most stress full camping weekend where I legit thought it broke like 6 times but didn't, I sit down grab the jar that has the wax in it go to scoop up a bit and I spass out and hit the tip of the glass mouthpiece w the jar just barley and I hear glass breaking behind my hand...... whole mouthpiece collapsed and shattered and I just seat there in complete defeat for like 15 mins. IVE DROPPED IT SOOO MANY TIMES AND THE GENTLE TAP 1 SHOT IT.
Happened again last week same way and I wanna cry. I have back up glass but mannnn wtf.

My Tylenol is kept in an unlabeled zip lock bag. One of the first things I did after moving out was buy a billion-count bottle, and then I promptly managed to destroy the bottle by absent-mindedly fiddling with it and a PVC pipe cutter that I forgot to put away.
I'm sure there's no way the baggie of unlabeled pills in my desk drawer will come back to bite me.

We bought a new stove and within a week i dropped a bottle of worchester sauce from the above cabinet and shattered the top. It cost as much to replace it.

I broke a jar in the sink because my hand decided to hulk grip it for no fuckin reason

u/think_i_am_smart 2d ago
i have days like that... and the best course of action i have found that works for me is... to go to sleep... when you wake up the spirit has moved on... mostly... on rare occasions you remain haunted till next day...
and if you cant sleep due to work or whatever... do just one thing slowly... overthink... figure out how you can break it and avoid that... usually if you break it in imagination in some way... that way gets locked out from reality so you can perform it safely in reality...
hope that makes sense... if it does, hope it helps...

u/BearDiscombobulated4 1d ago
Okay, I always have the urge to break something (especially the clip on a ballpoint pen), but I've never had a problem with accidentally breaking everything.
Do you guys seriously struggle with that?

This guy gets it. Who is he? He perfectly shows off what i call being "out of phase" its like being on a different layer of reality than everyone else

I always thought it was weird how every time I put a flat object down on a flat surface it fuckin falls anyways. That and any door I try close doesn't close so it swings back open.
1
u/ssquirt1 1d ago
I’m in this video and I don’t like it.
Seriously though, is this really yet another adhd thing? I CONSTANTLY drop things, knock things over, bang things into other things, run into things, etc.
1
u/ssquirt1 1d ago
My first husband bought me a set of twelve beautiful etched wine glasses. Fast forward 25 years later…only two have escaped a horrible fate at my clumsy-ass hands.

u/royalrush05 19h ago
Genuinely, is this why I keep breaking mugs? It seems every ceramic mug I use develops hairline cracks on the sides after about 6 months.

Given an almost finished rubik's cube during a speech class demonstration
"Oh, it's only two moves away from being finished? I can do this myself without instruction!"
The cube is now FUBAR

I've broken like 3 plates and two bowls...in the microwave?! (Literally just normally heating food, nothing weird).
I've also noticed it gets worse around my period. Apparently the "PMS clumies" is a thing a lot of people get.

“We thought you’d interact with this object like an NPC. Also, we hate you and love money, so we’re going to keep the design as-is. So it breaks when you use it.” -hostile device devs

u/aWizardsTail 2d ago
I have pretty bad ADHD but am 100% the opposite of this. I don't break anything and if I did, I'd fix it just as fast as I broke it lol.
0
u/Dee_Jiensai 1d ago
my sympathy is limited.
It's true. BUT. BUT. YOU KNOW YOU BREAK THINGS, WHY MAKE IT MORE PROBABLE BY PUTTING GLASSES ON THE EDGE OF THE TABLE!
WHY TRY TO CARRY 12 THINGS INSTEAD OF GOING TWICE!
WHY PUT A FULL CUP ON TOP OF YOUR COMPUTER "JUST FOR A SECOND"!
WHY??????
