I want to tell you about something we have been building for the past seven months. Not because it is perfect. Not because we have made millions. Not because we have a venture capital firm behind us or a fancy office or a team of fifty engineers. But because it is real, it is ours, and we believe Zimbabwe has needed it for a long time.
This is the story of Vanguard Digital.
Who we are:
Three young Zimbabweans, graduates in 2025 who could not find jobs after university (even though 1 of us is now working) and decided to build something instead of waiting for something.
Adonis — CEO and CTO. Economics and Development graduate from the University of Zimbabwe. IBM certified data analyst. Built the entire platform.
Takunda — COO. Supply Chain Management graduate from the University of Zimbabwe. Runs all logistics partnerships and fulfilment operations.
Yamikani — CFO. Actuarial Scientist. Handles all financial management, tax compliance, and investor relations.
We have recently brought on a fourth team member, a Zimbabwean social media influencer and model currently based in Poland who works with brands including Puma. He is joining us as our Strategic Director, Growth & Business Development, leading our marketing strategy and affiliate network from wherever he is in the world. We will share more about him when the time is right.
We are a small team. We are young. We are resourced on belief more than budget right now. But we are building something real.
The idea — where it started:
About seven months before our launch date we started seriously thinking about a problem that every Zimbabwean with a smartphone knows intimately.
Cross-border shopping in Zimbabwe is a nightmare.
If you want to order something from Amazon, Shein, Apple, Samsung Temu, Alibaba, 1688 or Takealot, your options are limited and all of them come with risk.
You can try to order directly. But international shipping to Zimbabwe is expensive, sometimes more than the item itself. Many platforms do not ship here at all. Payment methods are a barrier. And if your goods make it as far as Beitbridge without being declared properly, ZIMRA may seize them entirely.
Or you use a runner. You find someone on TikTok or Instagram or WhatsApp who says they ship from Shein or Amazon. You send them a deposit, usually to a personal EcoCash number. You wait. You ask for updates. You get "coming soon 🙏." You ask again. You get "it's at the border." Weeks pass. Sometimes months. Sometimes the number goes silent. Sometimes the number gets deactivated. Sometimes you go to collect and the balance is different from what you were quoted because of cashout charges nobody told you about. Sometimes the package is seized at Beitbridge because the shipment was undeclared. Sometimes everything goes fine and you breathe a sigh of relief and do it all again next time.
To be clear, we are not claiming to have invented cross-border shopping. Zimbabweans have been doing this for years. Runners, freight forwarders, sourcing agents, and informal shopping networks already serve a real and established market. The problem is not that the service doesn't exist. The problem is that much of it still operates through fragmented, manual, and often opaque processes that leave customers carrying unnecessary risk.
We are taking something that already exists and making it smarter, more transparent, more accountable, and more accessible through technology. We are bringing established logistics infrastructure, formal banking channels, regulatory compliance, transparent landed pricing, digital order management, and real-time tracking into one integrated platform. Instead of asking customers to trust a number on WhatsApp and hope for the best, we want to give them a system they can see, understand, and hold accountable.
This is not about reinventing the wheel. It is about upgrading the wheel for a generation that deserves better. The real-world service already exists; what has been missing is a more integrated, technology-driven way to deliver it.
The cross-border shopping market in Zimbabwe is estimated at USD $216 million and growing to $401 million by 2027. Ninety percent of it flows through informal, unregistered, non-ZIMRA-compliant channels. There is no formal, automated, accountable platform for any of it.
Or there was not. Until we built one.
The surveys and market validation:
We did not build first and ask questions later. We spent months asking questions, conducting surveys on our personal instagram stories before we wrote a single line of code.
We ran community polls across social media asking Zimbabweans about their cross-border shopping experiences. We documented the horror stories, the $266 lost to a ghost runner that went viral on TikTok with thousands of likes and comments. We studied the regulatory environment — SI 59 of 2026 which criminalises unlicensed commercial imports and which ZIMRA is actively enforcing with documented seizures, drone deployments, and convictions. We researched the market data through the US government International Trade Administration and logistics companies operating in the corridor. We spoke to freight forwarders. We compared notes with people who had tried and failed to build similar things before us.
By the time we started building we were certain of one thing. The demand was real. The pain was real. The gap was real. Nobody had formally filled it.
Building the platform:
We built the entire platform ourselves, using technology to modernise an existing service and make cross-border shopping simpler, more transparent, and more accountable. From browsing products and calculating full landed prices to secure payments, ZIMRA-compliant fiscal receipts, order management, real-time tracking, and our affiliate network, we have built an integrated digital experience designed around the needs of Zimbabwean shoppers. Real-time tracking workes through triggered order status updates that a customer receive on their WhatsApp number when fired and tracking can be utilized through a dedicated tracking page. Payments run through our registered Smile & Pay merchant account accepting EcoCash, OneMoney InnBucks, Omari, ZimSwitch, Visa and Mastercard. Customer notifications run through Meta Cloud API — WhatsApp Business. ZIMRA fiscalisation will be integrated directly via ZIMRA's own Virtual Fiscalisation API generating compliant fiscal receipts on every transaction when we reach the required benchmark for VAT registration. We have a full admin order management system, a real-time tracking interface, and an affiliate runner network portal with commission tracking and automated payout processing.
We used AI-assisted development tools to speed things up that is Cursor, Claude every serious developer does these days. But make no mistake. This was not a 30-minute task. It was seven months of building, breaking, rebuilding, compliance research, partnership negotiations, regulatory filings, and grinding through every obstacle Zimbabwe's startup environment could throw at us. And it threw a lot.
The company registration nightmare:
We engaged someone to handle our company registration with CIPAZ — the Companies and Intellectual Property Office of Zimbabwe. What should have been a straightforward process became months of delays, vague updates, and behaviour that genuinely made us wonder if we were being scammed. There were points where we seriously considered that the money we had paid and the time we had invested were gone.
They were not. The documents eventually came through.
Vanguard Digital (Private) Limited. Registration Number 128566A0272026. Incorporated 22 July 2026.
We have never been so relieved to see a piece of paper in our lives.
The compliance journey:
Once registered we threw ourselves into every compliance obligation we could identify. This is the part of building a startup in Zimbabwe that nobody talks about because it is unglamorous and exhausting. But we believed then and we believe now that compliance is not a burden. It is our competitive advantage. Every runner who cannot or will not comply is being pushed out of the market by the same regulatory environment that we chose to embrace.
We opened a USD Nostro Foreign Currency Account at our preferred bank. We registered as a Smile & Pay merchant under ZB Bank. We filed our CEBAS registration with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. We engaged an independent accountant. We will soon be applying for our POTRAZ Data Controller Licence. We drafted co-founders agreements, logistics partnership agreements, and share subscription agreements.
The biggest milestone in the compliance journey came when the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe approved us to formally procure international goods on behalf of customers through proper banking channels. Every order placed through Vanguard now moves through documented, legitimate, exchange-control-compliant infrastructure. Not a personal EcoCash number. Not an informal arrangement. Proper formal banking channels with proper documentation.
That approval meant something to us beyond the operational necessity. It meant Zimbabwe's central bank looked at what we were building and said yes. That matters.
Fun fact when we received an email for the approval it was an hour before I received a call from a company that had interviewed me, they had to update me that they were not going to move forward with me lol.
The pre-launch campaign:
For eight weeks before our launch date we ran a pre-launch marketing campaign across Instagram and TikTok. Community polls. Market education content. Platform teaser content. Relatable micro-moment posts about the runner experience that every Zimbabwean recognised immediately.
We gathered over 100 people on our waitlist before we processed a single order.
We launched officially on 16 September 2026.
The platforms we support:
Our platform aggregates multiple international shopping destinations into one checkout experience:
Amazon — live search, door delivery from UAE and SA routes.
Shein — cart link submission, SA store pricing, door delivery.
Takealot — live search, South Africa's largest retailer, door delivery from SA.
Apple and Samsung — Browse through live Apple products fetched directly from Apple Store sites.
Temu, Alibaba, and 1688 — these operate as sourcing services. Customers send us the product link or fill the RFQ, we source and calculate the full landed price (verified through our shipping partners), generate a checkout link for our sourcing fee, and then walk you through supplier payments and shipping payments until your order has landed or has been fulfilled.
Every order regardless of platform shows the complete landed price before payment — product cost, international freight, duties, and our service fee. One number. Before you pay. Nothing changes at collection.
The logistics infrastructure:
We have confirmed working with four logistics providers:
FSD Cargo — our primary partner — all-inclusive — China — Monday and Thursday departures — over 20 years of experience — ZIMRA licensed importer of record. They are the backbone of our China-sourced orders.
Dentad Logistics/LC Shipping — Dubai route — Thursday departures — specialists in Apple Store UAE, Samsung Store UAEand Amazon UAE.
Elite Air Express — China overflow — Tuesday and Friday departures.
Beyond Borders Logistics — South Africa specialist — dedicated Takealot route
And other for spillover and efficient procurement/logistics.
Between them we have active departure days from China four times a week. Every shipment is formally declared with a Bill of Entry. No seizures. No surprises.
Apple has a U.S. dedicated route that will be established soon for competitive Apple products prices.
Where we are right now — the honest version:
We have zero completed orders.
People are visiting the platform. People are making inquiries. Some are starting orders and leaving them pending. Some with insufficient funds. The platform works. The infrastructure is ready. The logistics partners are standing by and have also been asking on customers a sign that they have some belief in us.
What we do not have is the marketing budget to drive the awareness and trust that converts visitors into first-time buyers. We have run a few paid ads. Our entire marketing effort has been organic, social media content, community engagement, founder-led outreach, and exactly the kind of bootstrapped hustle you do when you have more belief than budget.
On the funding side we are raising our first external capital through a share subscription agreement with two incoming shareholders who will together contribute quite a substantial amount of money. Both are paying in instalments, small amounts here and there as they are able, with agreed deadlines. It is not a large sum. It may face delays given the instalment nature of the payments. But it represents real belief from real people in what we are building and we are grateful for every dollar.
We are open to further investment conversations. If you are reading this and you are interested in what we are building, reach out. We are early stage, registered, RBZ approved, compliance-first, and operating in a market with a documented $216 million opportunity and no formal competitor.
What is coming:
We are not standing still while we wait for our first orders.
HomeHaul by Vanguard is coming in Q1 2027 — a service specifically for the Zimbabwean diaspora in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, and Poland that will ship authentic Zimbabwean products like Mazoe, Cerevita, Tanganda, Nyimo, Kapenta, and more — from Harare directly to their doors worldwide. Taste home wherever you are.
We have brewing ideas for entirely new stores and categories that we will be introducing on the platform over the coming months. Our vision is a platform where the whole of Zimbabwe, regardless of suburb, income level, or banking status, can participate in formal, transparent, trustworthy global shopping. We are not there yet. But every decision we make is building toward that.
A mobile app is planned for Q2/Q3 2027 — iOS and Android.
SADC regional expansion is on the long-term roadmap, but only after Zimbabwe proves consistent, profitable, and repeatable. This expansion means that we will have to then slightly revise our model, but for now we are focusing on "vana vevhu" for the long term.
Why we are sharing this on Reddit:
We want Zimbabweans and people who know Zimbabwe to try the platform. Visit vanguarddigital.co.zw. Browse. Place an order. See the full landed price. Pay with EcoCash. Watch the tracking update on your phone. Receive it at your door.
Your first order matters more to us than you probably realise.
We also want creators and people with audiences to know about our Vanguard Runner Network affiliate programme. You apply, you get a unique referral link, your audience shops through your link, you earn up to 65% (depending on your tier) of our service fee automatically paid to your EcoCash/Innbucks every Friday on every successful referral order. No stock. No customs. No deposits. No client chasing. Apply at vanguarddigital.co.zw/affiliate.
And we want investors to know we exist. We are open. We are registered. We are building. If you want to be part of Zimbabwe's formal cross-border commerce infrastructure from the ground floor, we would love to talk.
A note to Zimbabwe:
We graduated into a country where the formal employment market could not absorb us and we understand it has been like that for a very long time now. So we built instead of waited. We did it with almost no money, in an environment with almost no startup support, navigating compliance frameworks that were not designed with young founders in mind, working with logistics partners who had never dealt with a platform like ours, and building technology that had never existed here before.
Our journey has also been one of faith. We believe God has a purpose for what we are building, and even when the resources are limited, the results have yet to come, and the road ahead is uncertain, we choose to keep showing up, keep working, and keep believing. We are trusting God to guide our decisions, give us the wisdom to build responsibly, and open doors that our own resources cannot. We know faith alone does not build a business, it takes work, discipline, patience, and perseverance, and of course funds. But faith is what keeps us going when the results have not yet caught up with the vision.
We are still standing. We are still building. And we genuinely believe that what we are creating will matter to Zimbabwe for a long time.
We are not perfect. The platform will improve. The service will improve. The range will expand. The experience will get better with every order, every iteration, every piece of feedback.
But we are here. We are registered. We are compliant. We are real.
And we are not going anywhere.
