Hey everyone! My friends and I are visiting Switzerland over Christmas/New Year’s and are planning to rent boards instead of bringing ours from the US.

We’ll be snowboarding:

• Zermatt: 2 days of riding
• Verbier: 1 day riding

Our biggest priority is a shop with storage near the lifts, so we can leave boards overnight or while we explore town instead of carrying everything back and forth.

We enjoy park riding but also want to explore the mountains, so we’re looking for quality boards. We’re hoping to ride over to Cervinia from Zermatt if conditions allow.

Which shops would you recommend for a good board selection, well-maintained equipment and fair prices? Any places that let you reserve a specific model or pick up the afternoon before?

I’ve come across Julen Sport and Bayard in Zermatt, but would love firsthand recommendations for either town. Any shops you’d avoid would also be helpful. Thanks!

My girlfriend and I are travelling to Zermatt from 9–16 January 2027, flying into Geneva on the 9th and flying home on the 17th. We’re really looking forward to the trip, but I’m struggling to work out the best way to get from Geneva Airport to Zermatt on the first night and would really appreciate some advice!

Our flight lands in Geneva at 7:30 pm on 9 January, but the last train connection that evening leaves at 7:55 pm, which realistically doesn’t give us enough time to get through the airport. The next connection isn’t until midnight, and we wouldn’t arrive in Zermatt until around 6:30 am on Sunday morning.

We’ve already booked and paid for our Airbnb in Zermatt from 9–16 January, so I’m keen to avoid wasting that first night. There’s an earlier flight available, but these flights would add around £300 on top of an already expensive trip.

I’ve only seen wildly priced private transfers so my only option might be hiring a car from Geneva Airport and driving to Täsch, then taking the shuttle train into Zermatt. However, I know driving in Switzerland in January comes with its own challenges, and we probably wouldn’t need a car during our week in Zermatt so if anyone has any recommendations in our situation other than this I’d really appreciate it, thank you!

With winter season coming up, a lot of people planning trips between Zermatt and Cervinia ask about wind holds at the top and how the new 3S lifts actually operate at 3,883m.

We recently got access from Zermatt Bergbahnen to walk through the control rooms, maintenance bays, and underground drive rooms at Trockener Steg and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise with Markus Schwizer from their team. Here are a few cool things we learned that you don't normally see as a skier riding up:

- Unlike standard gondolas on a single loop, the 3S runs on two fixed steel track cables (anchored at 70 tons of tension each) and one haul rope. That stability lets it cross a 3 km gap without a single support tower and keep running in winds up to 100 km/h.

- The old cable car maxed out at around 600 people an hour. The 52M CHF 3S upgrade pushed capacity to 2,000 people an hour, and the stations use angled ramps so gravity naturally slows cabins down from ~30 km/h on arrival and speeds them up on exit.

- The cabins don't have power cables attached while moving on the line. Instead, overhead rails in the station push a massive charge into supercapacitors in just a few seconds to run cabin electronics and cameras. The heated Pininfarina seats follow a strict safety protocol and only draw power while passing through the station.

- Everything is built with double or triple redundancy, two separate IT networks, fiber-optic lines inside the core of the steel track cables, gearless direct drives, emergency generators, and a diesel-hydraulic backup. Even if an entire underground technical room catches fire or the grid goes down, the system can bring every cabin back to the station on its own.

I’m Luca, 32M from Uruguay, planning a solo ski trip to Cervinia roughly Nov 7–15, 2026.

I’m an intermediate skier and I’m mainly looking for relaxed piste skiing, good food, après-ski and meeting other travelers.

I’ll probably stay somewhere inexpensive/social in Cervinia and would also be interested in sharing airport transfers or possibly accommodation if it makes sense.

We will be snowboarding in Zermatt for two days in February. We want to do the run from the Kleiner Matterhorn all the way to Valtournenche (85 → 88 → 7 → 35 → 10 → 1). I am wondering how many flat sections there are to get stuck and have skate. I’ve been snowboarding for a very long time and rarely get stuck, however for my partner it is a possibility. My concern would be doing a 22km run that is interrupted with many areas that a less adept snowboarder would constantly have to skate. My plan was to do this run first thing in the morning to have plenty of time to get back to Zermatt.

We’re staying in Bruson for the Verbier portion and going out in Verbier for NYE, so convenient equipment returns and somewhere to leave shoes or a small bag would also be helpful.

We enjoy park and all-mountain riding, so we’re looking for a good board selection and fair pricing. Any firsthand recommendations? Is storage usually included with rentals, and can you access it after the shop closes?

I know this is an insanely short trip, and wish we could stay longer but can't. Anywho, we are going to be in Zermatt for about a day and a half-ish. Leaving from Zurich early morning, Zermatt for the day & staying the night, and then heading to Lucerne that next day early afternoon.

Staying at Schloss Hotel since I've been reading this is spa season due to the decrease in daylight and their's is highly rated.

Depending on visibility/weather, hoping to do Gornergrat railway in the morning, grab lunch and relax for the evening. Big ACOTAR fan so obviously gonna squeeze in the Matterhorn view point. Would appreciate any other recommendations for must sees/do's if you have any for our short and sweet trip! 🫶🏼

I everybody, I'm hunting to find a place to stay at zermatt or close to for the upcoming winter. I'll be working at Zermatt's snowpark but I still need to find a place to stay. So if you can give me some tips or known someone who know someone to find a place to stay all winter it will be really appreciate. I'm serious, and I know how to take care of someone's place.

I’m planning a trip to Zermatt for early December (1st December to 4th of December). I see that Sunnegga/Rothorn and Gornergrat open November 28th, but for anyone who has visited around this time:

1. Weather: Did you get clear days for Matterhorn views, or is fog/clouds a big risk?

2. Village: Is the town partially lively yet?

3. Skiing: How good are the snow conditions?

I’ve skied in the past but wouldn’t consider my self an expert but intermediate skier. Also, I understand the weather is unpredictable, but I’m willing to take the risk of (hoping) getting a good day! Appreciate any insights or tips!

Hi folks, making my first trip to the beautiful Zermatt, in January 2027. We are staying in a hotel a good distance from the lifts, and also quite far away from any bus stop. So how easy is it to order a taxi in the morning, say at 8:30 AM, to go to the lifts? Or maybe book one the night before? I assume that they must be crazy busy in the mornings. Many thanks

We were trying to look at booking the Glacier Express for the ride back from Zermatt to Chur, however the website is unable to show available dates past October. My friends and I will be snowboarding in Zermatt in December and we would love to cross into Cervinia, Italy, for part of one day. We are comfortable riding most terrain.

Is the international route usually open in late December. How long does the full trip take, which lifts and runs should we follow, and what is the safest cutoff time for heading back to Zermatt?

I’ve heard that lift closures can leave people stranded on the Italian side, so I’d also appreciate advice about checking conditions, navigating the route and avoiding missing the final return lifts. Has anyone done this trip around the same time of year? Any advice would help!!
