It's Halloween and it's pumping season!!! So I'm looking for a good horror read with—and this is very very important— SMART MAIN CHARACTERS.
You might think I'm bonkers "horror without the dumb shit? That's like asking for an egg-less omelette or bread sticks without bread"
As to which yes I'm asking bread sticks without the bread, I'll just take the sticks thank you very much.
I've never dipped my toes into the horror side when I'm exclusively a fantasy reader who dabbles in a smidgen of sci fi so this is going to be a first time experience.
I'm very interested in eldritch type horrors like bird box (I've already seen the movie) but I'm also open to horror nuns, summoned demons, bloodline cursed and other stuff.
I also like my main characters to undergo a bit of psychological thriller and horror, just to spice things up a little.

So sorry if this was asked here before because I am just looking for some young adult fiction with a fantasy aspect where the story has a great deal of mystery surrounding it.
I mean, yes I know there is Harry Potter as the thing is that the book is often surrounded by controversy due to the actions of its own author that I was wondering what other fantasy books are worth reading that aren’t marred by controversy in some way.

i just finished rereading a series i loved in high school and realized the "endgame" couple makes me want to scream. the love interest is genuinely sweet but the other person had way more chemistry with the mc, and it feels like the author just picked the "safer" option? curious if anyone else has gotten halfway through a book just rooting for the "wrong" ship to win out.

I reread this series after 6 (almost 7!) years, and WOWWW, it’s still so good!! Usually, YA books tend to feel a bit more juvenile or cringe when you reread them as an adult, but that wasn’t the case with this series at all. In fact, I appreciated everyone’s characters even more now. I first read it in middle school, and I remember not really liking Derek but now I realize that he was just a scared teen who was trying his best to keep his friends and family safe.
Chloe’s narration is amazing, and I still love her soooo much to this day. She’s such an underrated book girl, and I love how she’s aware of her limitations but never complains about them. Instead, she focuses on what she CAN do with her strengths. Chloe and Derek’s relationship is also SO well done!! I just love how they start out as friends and slowly grow closer until they eventually realize their feelings for each other. They’re so cute together and they both of them all each other a better person. They just WORK!!
Also, the pacing is great, and it NEVER gets boring!! The action is so good, and I LOVEEE seeing the dynamics between the teens in their group. I finished the entire trilogy, along with all the other short stories and books where they make cameos, in just ONE WEEK!!
This series is still SOOO freaking amazinggg, oh my goodness!! It makes me want to reread it all over again!!

I loved Divergent as a teenager, and I picked up The Sixth Faction at a bookstore the other day but I couldn’t bring myself to buy it.
I’m afraid it’s either going to feel so much like Divergent that it will feel like a waste of time to read, or so opposite that I’ll find myself frustrated the entire time lol.
Has anyone who loved Divergent in its prime read it? Is it possible for you to tell me how it differs from the original without spoiling it? And in the end, were you happy you read it?

just picked up a book i loved in like 2015 and i'm reading it with adult eyes and i'm like... why was everyone so into this guy. he's controlling and kind of gaslights her and the whole fandom was losing it over him. makes me wonder how many ya characters i thought were swoon-worthy that would actually be terrible in real life lol

i just finished rereading a series and realized the guy the mc rejected in book two was lowkey making valid arguments the whole time. now i'm wondering if anyone else has had that experience where you finish a book and think "wait, actually the love triangle wasn't what i thought it was"?

I have finally gotten around to reading the entirety of the ToG series. I’ve previously read the first 5 books or some other amount at different times, but always skipped AB because I really didn’t see the point of it.
And now that I have read it?
I still don’t think it’s necessary. 😭
Spoilers ahead!
I really didn’t think Sam and Celaena’s romance was some great love story. She hated him for 2/3 of the book? Don’t throw stones at me, but I think her romance with KhaoI was more emotional and heart wrenching. I 100% guessed what Arobynn was doing when she returned from the red desert, including the twist at the end. I also think what happened to Nehemia is a much bigger driver to Calaena’s character than what happens in AB. I essentially don’t think we needed a entire book to explain why she is against slavery.
I am firmly on the side of telling someone they can read a synopsis of the book.

Like the quintessential YA books, that define the genre?
I would say:
The Hunger Games
Twilight
The Maze Runner
Divergent?
The Fault in Our Stars?
The Mortal Instruments
But I'm not certain. What would you all say?

Just finished reading The Sixth Faction and I can honestly say it was a complete and utter let down. Just supremely disappointed here. I’m not posting spoilers because that wouldn’t be right but anyone else finish the book and get this huge overwhelming feeling of shame and disgust?!

I love to read, but contemporary romance has never been my favorite genre (it's not contemporary romance, but the only romance books I've read are certain classics like Jane Austen's novels). I wanted to try reading contemporary romance and I read Better Than The Movies, which I really enjoyed. :)
So, I would appreciate your recommendations for romance novels with a non-toxic male protagonist and no explicit scenes, please. :)
I apologize in advance if I can't reply to all the comments. :)

I started reading it a few months ago and since I read multiple books at once… I kinda forgot about it. I was iffy on it because I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews on it so I wasn’t really sure what to expect.
I read the first I think 60 pages and read a few pages since then over the last few months. Until last night, I picked it back up again last night and just read. I think I stopped somehere around page 180 last night because I was just really tired. That’s kind of when it started to pick up for me.
I became more intrigued and at some point I looked at the page count and was like woah I’m already at page 300??? It just got more exciting and it just grasped my attention.
I don’t have many bad things to say beyond that it took nearly 200 pages for it to be intriguing. I liked the idea of the book, the characters, the magic. Sure somw writing choices were iffy, but otherwise I enjoyed it. Also I’m obsessed with Julian’s nickname for her gahhhhh!
I gave it 4/5 stars in the end

Tell me the series, and what about the author did or something else that made you quit a genuinely good series you otherwise would've continued if it wasn't for the author.

Hi, Reddit!
I (M27) want to surprise my girlfriend (F26) with more books, but I honestly have almost zero knowledge about books. Most of the media I consume is movies and music, so I’m hoping you guys can help me out!
My girlfriend and I have been living together for over a year. Last month, we came across a book sale and found The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. We decided to get it, and she really enjoyed reading it.
A week later, the trailer for Sunrise on the Reaping came out, and she got so excited that we ended up binge-watching all the Hunger Games movies together. Seeing how much she loved the series, I decided to buy her Sunrise on the Reaping as a surprise.
When I gave her the book, her face lit up with this childish smile, like a kid finally getting something they’d been asking for. It genuinely made me happy to see her that excited. Today, she even told me, “I feel like a kid again.”
That honestly made me want to do this more often.
So, I’m turning to you, fellow readers, for recommendations! I’d love to find more books that would give her that same excitement, especially dystopian novels similar to The Hunger Games. She also loves thrillers and stories with unreliable narrators, so I’m open to those genres, too.
I’ve added a photo of the books we currently have in our apartment to give you an idea of what she might enjoy.
I may not know much about books, but I’d love to learn enough to surprise her with something she’ll genuinely love.
What books would you recommend? Bonus points if they’re the kind of books that make you wish you could read them for the first time all over again.
Thanks in advance!

47m here. Loved HP. Looking for a series with similar vibe, and found Alcatraz. Loved it. In fact read all the 6 books in 6 days. Right now we are having holidays in my place.
So, any series that has similar vibe like Alcatraz? It should be fast paced, with lots of humor and sarcasm (romance is optional and should not be the main focus). I am also fine with the following
This is my first post on reddit. 😄
Thanks
Edit: The series I am referring to is Alcatraz vs. The Evil Librarian by Brandon Sanderson.
Edit 2: I am not just looking for children books, rather anything that is similar to Alcatraz.

I did not know this was coming so soon. These books are great and the author just passed away. The last book is due out November 3rd.
