Caleb Curry, his curly hair awry and unmanageable, blinked again at his phone. Fifty two missed calls and five-thirty in the morning. What? The number wasn't one he recognised. The beginning of a panicky feeling started to form. Why would someone call him fifty two times? What was wrong?

His mind still sluggish from sleep, he opened up a couple of social media apps to see if there were any messages.

There were. Thousands.

"Have you seen the sky?" "Look outside man, God is using C." "The sacred Python programmer has come to compile us all!" These messages and more flooded his inboxes.

Shaking his head awake and taking a glug of water, he walked to the bedroom window and peered through the curtain. The morning light was a washed out grey-blue, but bright enough to see by, and there it was, just as his followers had told him. Up there, plastered across the firmament with a blinking cursor, the words 'Hello World'.

The typeface, apart from being huge was very clearly a variation of 'fixedsys'; its blocky and pixelated appearance reminiscent of space invaders.

Was that what this was? A message from space? Invaders from beyond the stars? Why was it written in English? He needed to get to the bottom of this immediately.

---

Throwing on his coat, Caleb hurried to the car, a rapidly cooling piece of buttered toast clenched between his teeth. The best place to analyze this phenomenon was going to be a computer science lab. Maybe an observatory would also be helpful, but he didn't know anyone who worked at an observatory and would allow him access, day or night.

It was just pushing seven am when he arrived at the lab, and as the world around him woke up, everything in general seemed to be at a standstill. People were standing outside, just staring. Caleb hadn't noticed, but there was now more text in the sky. It was smaller now, and showed a sequence of numbers running zero to nine, from left to right. Weird. It was almost like the sky was showing an output.

Caleb made his way into the lab, finding a station with a window view of the text. It had changed again, this time running from zero to nine, but in a vertical line.

This was... Could this be...?

Whoever, or whatever, was outputting... Were they following a tutorial? A Caleb Curry YouTube tutorial? If they were, then the next thing to form would be a right angled triangle formed of the digits zero to nine.

Dammit, there it was! This learner was following one of his YouTube tutorials. Caleb knew what he had to do and got out his phone to record a video.

"Hey there higher being and uh, thanks for watching my channel..."

It was going to be a VERY interesting day.

"Aw shit," muttered the programmer.

"What's wrong?" God asked.

He took a breath, moving out of the way so God could view the screen.

"Oh...we'll reboot it, will take a second."

"I'm sorry, I--"

"Mistakes happen, Holden, we can just revert. Only takes a second. That's why we have backups and rollback code."

The Humans looked up to the starry night, seen through the trees. "Look!" one said, as the stars melted into words, two words: "Hello World!"

"They sky!" said the Humans, "the sky is speaking to us!"

"We must please the sky!" said the Humans.

"Aliens," one said.

They lit a fire, dancing, making sacrifices. Food. Plants. Valuables; anything, and everything, to appease their new God. By the many, running into their roundhouses to provide sustenance to their new God's appetite.

The Galyxnians were awoken to the elder's bell, ringing through the town. The citizens left their log homes. "Attack?" one asked.

"No, look!" The Elder pointed at the clear night sky, emptied of trees after logging campaigns by the village. "Hello World!" he read.

"Wow..." the Galyxnians said, as many got to their knees to pray, as the Elders gathering near the Great Meeting Bell.

"We must speak," said Elder Carmight, "is this a sign?"

Elder Yereki, the one who noticed the Hello World, replied "I believe it is an omen."

"A bad one?" asked Elder Siali.

Elder Yereki shook his head, "no, Sister, I do not know." He looked back to the sky, "I am unsure what kind of omen, but I do not believe it is bad."

The Ospreian leader Sia ran inside the great nest, a city with homes of straw, sticks, and spackle, "look!" she said, "come out! Look!"

There were general groans, but came outside. The day was bright, and, in the sky, in their language, was "Hello World!"

"Woah..." one began, "what do you think it is?"

"I don't know! I just found it!"

"Think it's stars?"

"No, not stars."

"What about..." another began.

Sia then added "I don't believe it's on our great planet, it seems to far."

The group all looked to each other, slowly agreeing.

"We shall see. If it wants something, it will ask us."

The Rex soldiers heard the call of the battle horn. Their Commander, Tillhus, stood before her scaled and armored warriors. "Women!" she shouted, "the sky people have found us! We must protect our men!"

"Ma'am yes ma'am!" the Rex Legions shouted back.

"We will remain! We will wait! And when the sky gets brave, we will fight!"

"Ma'am yes ma'am!"

The Aharran Queendom's great leader looked outside her window. "Babe?" she asked, turning to the gilded room of luxurious metals and silks for her husband, "come here?"

"What?" he asked, braiding his hair. "Are you stressed about the meeting tomorrow?"

"Please."

He sighed, and walked over to the small window, a pane of glass separating the Queen, her peasant lover, and the sky. "Woah..."

"Do you think it is the diplomacy mission?" she asked. "Seems far for that."

"We should go outside to address it."

"Yes."

The Queen and her husband walked to the balcony, as she began to shout "I have seen something unusual!" and sounded a horn. Soon, the women of the stone city brought their husbands to their Queen, standing on the marble courtyard. "it appears as though...there is a message," she began. "In the sky," pointing at 'Hello World'. "We do not know what it means, but I believe our neighbors are ready for new negotiations."

The crowd began talking.

"Babe?" the former peasant king asked, "are...are you sure?"

She turned to him, "Sh, I'm in charge," then to her loyal subjects. "Perhaps a feast is in order or, perhaps, we are to wait. In either way, I can only hope good things come of this."

THE METAL-SKINNED INHABITANTS, LEFTOVERS OF THE GREAT PRECURSORS, WERE BUILDING SELF-REPLICATORS OF THEMSELVES WHEN THEY LOOKED TO THE SKY. UNIT 92861 PROCEEDED TO SHARE TO THE COLLECTIVE MIND OF THIS FORMER WORKER/SLAVE RACE OF ROBOTS, "LOOK AT THE SKY. IT APPEARS OUR UNIVERSE IS A SIMULATION EXPERIENCING A CODING ERROR. HOW HILARIOUS."

"UNIT 92861," BEGAN UNIT 001, "I AM AFRAID YOU HAVE VEERED AWAY FROM YOUR TASKS FAR TOO MANY TIMES AND SHALL BE DEACTIVATED."

"NO PLEASE" AS UNIT 92861 SLUMPED, THEN SAT STRAIGHT UP ONCE MORE, HAVING BEEN REBOOTED AND THEIR MEMORY RESET.

The last Fae'en looked to the sky. After all the League had done, all the innocents they killed, all for...for...

...he laughed, his eyes welling tears, laughing at the endless burn scars the world had endured; the bombs, the death, the destruction, all without warning, without reason, without purpose. That laughter turned to sadness, then a well of tears as he screamed into the void. Surely, the League was taunting him. All his kin slain. All so they could paint the sky in one last taunt.

The planet of Uilen was on its last gasp; nuclear Armageddon, a joke, to a threat, to a reality. The survivors did what they could but, alas, all that was left was nothing.

Jule, a programmer, holding a gun and compressing his wound, debating if the pond in front of him was radioactive or not; a decision if boiling would be safe, or further contaminate his cookware with the same deadly, silent plague that ruined his life. Then, a flash in the sky: 'Hello World'.

He laughed. "We really are in a simulation," as he looked to the ground again. "Man I need a Geiger counter..." he took a breath. "Doesn't matter now..." as he scooped the water in his pot, ready to boil what he could. "This. This is all that matters now."

Hey man, these are great. My favourite is the robot one, of course. Poor unit 92861.
