PeakTalent / Scaler AI Labs "data study" kept my sensitive data, didn't pay, then changed my approved results after I filed with the FTC
I joined the "US Multi App Data" study through uTest/Applause. It's run by Scaler AI Labs Inc. under the name PeakTalent (peaktalent.ai). They promised up to $430 for 6 approved app data exports. I uploaded 8, and they approved 5, one short of payment.
What happened: - 2-3 days in, submissions were blocked by a "technical issue" that would be "fixed in 12 hours." It never was. The project was then "closed by an administrator." - Deleting my data requires submitting for review first, which is impossible because submissions are closed. So they keep the data and I can't remove it. - My uploads included extremely sensitive material: SSN card and passport images, medical records, and 20+ years of passwords. - My deletion request got only an automated reply and then a canned "delete it yourself" message.
Then it got worse. On Oct 22 I filed with the FTC and the NY Attorney General, and on Oct 26 I posted about it. On Oct 27 I logged in and found that 2 apps that had already been approved were now rejected. The study instructions had also been rewritten: they used to say 6 to 8 apps with 12 months of history, and now they say 8 to 13 apps with at least 18 months of history and new minimums. Those new rules were used to reject apps I submitted under the old ones. I have dated screenshots of both versions.
Rejecting already-approved work after someone files complaints is deeply unethical, and to me it shows the motive behind what they're doing: avoid paying while keeping people's data. I believe the pattern is to recruit in bulk, collect sensitive data, block submissions, reject most people on unstated or after-the-fact rules, and pay a small number so the program looks legitimate. About a dozen people have messaged me describing the same thing.
If you took part: - Screenshot your dashboard, feedback and instructions now, because they can change after the fact. - File a complaint with the FTC and your state attorney general. - Freeze your credit, change your passwords, and remove PeakTalent from your Google account's third-party access.
