gear, techniques, photo challenges & trends Are you a 35/85 photographer?

I’ve been running a 28-70/70-200 for the last couple of seasons and I love it. I find the 28-70 is as sharp as a prime lens, and I can get a huge variety of photos with this setup.

However, the effect on my body isn’t ideal! I’m hypermobile, and have given myself wrist issues. I also find it super annoying to have both heavy lenses hanging by my side all day.

I trialled a 35/85 setup at a wedding last weekend. I definitely moved a lot more (I zoomed with my feet, ha!) but there were times when I really missed being able to get wider or tighter with photos.

For those that tend to do a day with just those primes, have you got any tips to fall in love with it? Because my body would really love me to fall in love with it 🤣

Folks got a question.

How to start wedding photography journey? I would absolutely love to give it a try. I'm 35 and been doing photography for few years now. I think Im not that old yet to start new career - been a chef for a past 15 years so I don't mind at all long hours working day

Mostly been photographing landscapes and wildlife. I totally understand that weddings are different, already did one - my friend was getting marriage few months ago. They got 500photos and really liked them. I also was groom's best man so I was doing my best !😂

l I did some portrait photography with some of my friends also. But I know practise make masters.

Should I just offer my self as a second shooter on wedding market place or should I get contact directly to some photographers and see if they fancy help? What you think ? How to start...building wedding portfolio ?

I don't wanna make profit for now , that's not my goal, so I don't mind work for absolutely minimum even just to get transport costs fees back for a year or two as long I can build my portfolio.

I do have Sony A7IV and few lenses (24-70 2.8 GMII, 70-200 2.8 GMII, 85 1.4 GMII, 100mm macro lens 2.8 GM) also have speed light godox v100, godox ad200proII + 90cm softbox so gear is here.

All photography basics are here I know them, I think i just got lack of self confidence to give it a try...I don't know..

I'm located in Scotland.

gear, techniques, photo challenges & trends On-camera flash and moving subjects

• Upvotes

Photographing a dimly lit ceremony. It does have some ambient light so I am hoping to use my on camera flash for fill and hoping that it won’t “look” like I have used flash… but I definitely do need that extra light.

Would 1/25-1/60 shutter speed be okay for moving subjects aka walking/running down the aisle? Or would you turn on HSS and bump up the shutter? Someone told me once years ago that shutter speeds dont really matter with flash as the light “freezes” the moment so you don’t have to worry about blur too much with shutter speed. Is this true??

My settings Im thinking of using currently:
- 1/25-1/60 shutter
- ISO 800-2000
- F2.8-4
- TTL
Depending on ambient light adjusting the iso or aperture. I use a Sony body!

Just trying to refresh my memory before going into darker and poorly lit weddings!
