looking for producers - Experimental R&B / Emo

Anybody using any interesting Send FX apart from delay/reverb?

I have a section on my template that has all my send(aux) fx returns. There's a few reverbs and delays on there I can send anything to. It's tons of fun to play with.

So I'm curious is anybody using anything other than reverbs and delays on their sends?

Craig's list is a wasteland, google returns nothing but garbage & scams sites. How do you find bands in your area looking for musicians?

I'm a drummer. Loads of experience and new in town. I want to find a band that's looking for someone like me. Once upon a time I found people to collaborate with through recent ads on Craigs list. Now when go on Craigs list an ad will say in the search result that the ad was placed 5 hours ago but when you click through it says post created 28 days ago WTF? WTAF??

It's been a really long time (8 years) since I've tried looking for a new project to contribute to and it's getting really frustrating. Are there any legit websites that offer an actual musicians exchange? Where you might see a post "Neu-Disco flavored prog band seeks new members" and you can respond to it and maybe setup a time to meet up and jam? Is that even a thing anymore? There is a "MY TOWN" musicians reddit here but it's 99% people posting about their upcoming show.

Any help would be really, greatly appreciated.

Autoharp work-around?

I love the sound of autoharps but don't have access to one (or know how to play it for that matter). I produce in Ableton and want to try out an autoharp in some of my arrangements so any recommendations for digital instruments or samples would be great

Performing songs you have produced

I’ve been producing music for a few years and was wondering how I can tell if my music is worth sharing / performing live? I have had people tell me they like what I post online but I’m unsure whether it will translate well to a real setting. do I need a large following before I go for it or should I ask small local venues if I can play for free?

Studio workflow?

Our local library has a recording studio that's free for members to use. I booked a 3 hour session for next month and I want to make the most of my time. My goal is to release an EP sometime next year, so this will be the first of many sessions, just wondering if anyone has a suggestion on workflow. I'd like to get a scratch track to a click for 5 songs that I can send to the other musicians that will be involved. What would be a good plan of attack?

Trying to transition from 7th chords verse to a power chord riff and I can't figure out how to do it well

Hello! I am new to songwriting and I am having trouble putting together my verse and chorus. My verse is staccato 7th chords and then my chorus is powerchords played in an eight notes. They... really do not flow well together for some reason. I can't tell if I need to just rewrite the chorus to not be power chords or if I need to find the right transition between them. Any advice is appreciated, thank you

Mixing in a small studio space

Hey folks. I have been mixing mainly on a set of beyer dynamic dt880s, combined with soundID reference.

I have had some GIK acoustic panels and bass traps lying around for years in anticipation of having access to a reasonable sized room but unfortunately that hasn't worked out. The best I can do in that regard is a small 2*2m room. I have 8 thick bass traps along with a few thinner acoustic panels. My monitors are Focal Solos. Would i be wasting my time setting these up in such a small space, in which case should I just stick to using the headphones/software combo for the time being until I have access to a larger room (I don't envisage that being anytime soon)

Playing Live as an independent artist

Hey, what's going on. I am 16 years old and have been making and releasing indie pop/folk music for about a year now, and since I have a few singles and an EP I am about to release, I want to start performing live. I used to perform live all the time, but only at school; I rarely played in outside of school venues. So I am just wondering if anyone has any tips for me, I am pretty lost on how to get a gig and stuff.

I am also located in York, UK, so if anyone happens to know any good open mic or music venues here? Also, if I do perform at a show, would I only play my own music? I am also not a great singer, and my songs sound a bit better with a full band behind them, but I don't have a band yet, so I would have to do acoustic gigs, which is quite nerve-racking. Any tips will help 🙏

First time writing drums for a hard rock/post grunge/chugging Drop D album

EDIT: I didnt reply to anyone but I read all of them, been applying all this info over the past couple days and its been extremely helpful, thanks again everyone

So ive already come up with the guitar parts for an album but havent had to do drums before. Im generally doing the 2 bar call and response to keep it interesting. Ive been adding very basic kick/snare on each track then adding the hi hat stuff, then redoing the kick and snare to make it sound better with the hi hats and finally adding fills/cymbals. Idk if that makes sense as a work flow but how much space should the drums really be filling? Ive been trying to listen to records that are similar to what im trying to do but im just not a drummer

The latest one im working on alternates between having the snare on the guitar rhythm and then syncopating with it but that sounds kinda messy for a straightforward hard power chord type song. Just looking for some anecdotes from people making the same music on what they do with their drums

Thanks in advance

Developing a consistent vocal tone

I've been thinking about how much a vocalist's tone can change depending on the style of music they're working on. Sometimes a softer delivery fits a song better than a powerful one, even when both are technically good.

How do you approach finding the right vocal tone for a song without losing the qualities that make your voice recognizable?

What are the key tips for making MIDI drums feel real? I'm working with Ezdrummer 3 in Reaper.

I work in the genres of rock, punk, stoner, blues, so the robotic repetitive groove just won't do it. I guess proper accents and adding fills as long as it makes sense can kinda help, but I still have this feeling like nah, it's still robotic. Maybe I should do every single drum groove and fill by hand, no copypasting, and then I'll have the feeling that I did it myself thus it's not robotic...

Anyway, any tips?

How have you elevated your live show?

I’m in a garagy, post punkish band that plays around 20 shows a year. Most are of them are local, at smaller venues, but we have been fortunate enough to get some opportunities at larger venues as support for touring artists. We have been intentional with our live shows by taking the time to construct set lists with a good flow, play chunks of songs back to back and use samples during our tuning breaks to help elevate dead air. We have a sorta sleazy used car salesmen vibe that we all dress in, so not matching but cohesive.

We have just finished tracking our first full length album, and now we want to get back to improving our stage show as we get ready to do more touring and playing out to promote the album. So I’m looking for any advice, ideas, tips or tricks that have helped your group deliver a better live performance, outside of just being well rehearsed and dialed in, which I believe we are.

Much appreciated!

Putting EQ and compression a single track featuring vocals and piano.

Earlier today I recorded a video on my phone of me singing and playing piano that I want to toss into my DAW to add on to. I'm not sure how I would go about making that sound good though considering

  1. i recorded it on my phone

  2. both elements are on one track

Any suggestions on what to do?

Drone and ambient artists... do you ever use copy and paste?

I'm kinda aware that the purpose of drone is to focus on the evolution of the sound so there's not a whole lot of actual sameness in it and ambient also has heavy variations for the sake of remaining interesting... but is it foul to actually do copy and paste before the sections where variation happens? That is considering that I'm not modulating any sound in the music, the variation is often melodical or layers of other instruments.

It feels cheap to copy and paste, especially when its not really a track meant to have any complexity so it finishes itself within an hour even. Thoughts?

Help me with my master's project: what creative constraints should I use for an ambient electronica EP?

Hi everyone,

I'm a master's student in arts education, and for my project I'm making a 5-track ambient electronica EP. Each track will be made under a different creative constraint, and I'll document the process in a log and see how the constraints affect my creativity.

I'd love your suggestions for constraints. They can be anything: limits on instruments, plugins, time, structure, sounds, techniques, or workflow. The weirder the better, as long as it's possible to make one track under it.

A few examples to get started: only one synth for the whole track, no drums, a time limit of 2 hours, or all sounds must come from recordings you made yourself.

What constraints have worked for you, or what would you want to see someone try?

Thanks!

Bandlab confusion

So i made a cover of Sombr's Undressed as a garage rock version, it rough but still learning the ropes

I got my Scarlet 2i2, mic, guitar, the works.

Now i try to play along the built in metronome but man...either i dont hear it at all (when playing drums)

Go too fast (playing guitar) or just miss it (playing bass)

Currently my work flow is guitar, drums, bass then vocals. Matching bass to kick drum works but somehow a bpm checker says i am playing at 122 bpm while i put 117 in bandlab.

Any ideas what i am doing wrong?

Thx.

Best way to improve delivery for recording?

Especially rap. I'm thinking of writing my lyrics out in actual syllables and how they sound so I can enunciate them better when I rap. Singing is less of an issue
