Legal loophole allows North Dakota to drain WPAs for oil well production water

Post image
42 Upvotes

So this WPA was drained earlier this year by a private comany that provides water for oil wells. When contacting the refuge managers about it, they stated there was nothing they could do because of the slivers of private land that border the body of water. In North Dakota, the state has jurisdiction over all surface water and is able to issue permits to companies, even though a majority of the wetland is under the WPA. If your a resident, make sure your voice is heard before the session starts this year. Middle of the session is too late.

First time snipe hunting - got a limit!

Post image

The ducks weren’t really flying this morning and I had seen some snipe around the area. I had never gone for them before so I figured I would give it a shot even though I don’t have a pointer or bird dog.

Decided to walk around for a few hours and bagged a limit!

I wing shoot with a micro red dot sight, which many people have told me is just not a good way to do it, but I am self taught (first hunt was 2 years ago) and played a lot of airsoft using a red dot so it was more comfortable for me.

I think getting this snipe limit really validated my choice to stick with the red dot instead of swapping to a bead like many have suggested.

My last 4 shots ended with 4 snipe down so I’m very happy with the hit rate.

A little patterning advice

I have a conventional question about an unconventional shotgun. I hunt with a PBBA Pro-20, which is a 20ga air-shotgun. It's a cylinder bore, but later versions than mine were threaded for chokes and I'm considering having it threaded. I patterned at 35yds with a variety of sizes of steel and bismuth shot, as shown in the pics. #6 steel is 1oz, #3 bismuth is about 25grams.

In the sub's opinion, am I getting good patterns? I'm mostly duck and dove hunting with 35-40yd shots, and I'm missing birds that I am confident I should be hitting. I'm wondering if my pattern is too loose. The google-fu just turns up a lot of non-answers and advertisements when I try to search for normal 20ga patterns.

In the field I'm mostly shooting #6 steel with a commander wad, and #3 bismuth with a commander wad. Don't mind the low pattern on some of those, I've since raised the cheek piece.

What is your quality of life purchase?

I’m just getting into waterfowl hunting in the Midwest and curious of some absolute game changing purchases. Are there certain items you would not mind paying a premium for?

I try to get all my stuff second hand so curious to see what I should be looking out for.

Hunting in Gator Country

Hi all, my wife and I moved down to the gulf coast (SE Texas) last year and this will be my first season waterfowl hunting this area. Gators are extremely common around here but I’ve never had to give them a second thought anywhere else I’ve hunted. I grew up in this area and am very familiar with gators in a general sense, but from a waterfowling standpoint, for those of you in a similar situation, anything I should be aware of or tips/tricks for hunting in gator-heavy areas that have worked for y’all?

Just starting to take waterfowl hunting more seriously and loving it so far. Got a drake wood duck and I believe a hen ring-necked duck? The woody I’m ageing in the fridge but I ate the other and it was pretty tasty, especially for a diver!

Alternatives to scissor blind on 14’ johnboat?

Last season, we built the classic diy scissor blind on my brother’s 14’ johnboat. Works quite well when set up, but….

My brother isn’t in the greatest shape and just had knee surgery; so he has been really struggling to get in and out when it’s set up The X crossbars at the end block off too much, which mean we have to lower everything when he needs to exit and enter (working with the new dog, pissing, pooping, etc)

We are in the process of changing a few things and might have a new plan, but I was wondering if anytime has a collapsible blond idea that would be better than the scissor design for out application/limitations. Searching YouTube only brings up 20 different builds of the same design.

Thanks

3 came into the decoys with cupped wings, got 2. That’s all the chances I had this morning. 67% shooting efficiency. Soaking in milk and will cook them up.

Any love for cormorants over here?

Had an amazing cormorant hunt in Sweden. We joined some guys taking part in a research project where they try to get rid of all the Cormorants in the area to see if the sea trout population will bounce back.

Goose opener here in Oregon. The spot is 1 mile from the house and the birds are roosting 500 yards away. I didn’t want to jump them by driving the truck in before sunrise. This worked great!

Illinois early Canada

I was planning a trip up to Chicago from Louisiana around September 2027, and saw yall have an early Canada running from the 1st-15th. Would love to try to fit a hunt in one day to shoot my first Canada if there’s even any outfitters or anything within driving range of Chicago. TIA!

Picked up a Northern Flight universal kayak blind on sale. Ended up making a few modifications to add more stubble straps on the doors. More than likely add more grass to it, but its pretty much ready to hunt

Steelshot

My dad and I went out pheasant hunting after our morning duck hunt and we shot 7 3in #4 steelshot into one single bird before it went down and when I was skinning out the pheasant it was ridiculous how many pellets fell out of the feathers and skin. Not a single pellet got through any of the breast feathers.

Is Steel worthless for anything other than ducks or do Pheasants just have armor😂
