DE Response DE, Please Do Something About the Chat Moderation, Specifically One Moderator I Will Not Name
First of all, I will start the post by saying that I have no ill intent to harm Digital Extremes’ (DE’s) reputation, nor am I willing to call for vigilante justice. I am not trying to play hero here. I'm too cowardly for that.
This post is not against the Naming rule since I will keep every name mentioned anonymous, and I am not willing to witch-hunt, and I am not telling others to do so. My post also has no legal bearing whatsoever, and in the end, it is DE’s freedom to decide whether to answer or not.
Please don’t take legal action (I really don't have the guts to handle that tbh), if anybody in DE wants me to delete the post, please DM me or comment, I will delete the post, and I will shut up about it. I want the best for DE, I am simply distraught at the current situation. Again, I do not want anything bad, nor am I calling for vigilante actions.
(English is my second language, so please ignore the syntax / grammar errors that may exist. Thank you)
One can argue that I can take this problem to Warframe Support, however, someone has already inquired about the issue about chat moderation and has received a message which sums up to ‘we can’t deal with it because chat bans are only temporary and you probably broke the rules.' (THE 3rd IMAGE IS NOT MINE.)
I, alongside several people in the community, want answers about what leads them to keep a moderator that allegedly goes on a ‘spree’ to limit chat for multiple people who claim they have not broken the rules. Further on, I want to see that DE actually is willing to change and deal with the problems of chat moderation that have been piling up for several years.
I will call the moderator A for brevity.
When I search up A’s username online, I can already find multiple posts about how A has a bad reputation. There’s even an online petition too. While it is possible that some bad actors in the chat wanted to frame the moderator, that is not the case most of the time. There are people that have uploaded their chat records, and they did not violate any rules. Some claim that people should leave the chat server when A joins.
For me, this doesn’t seem to be a problem of the players, but A’s. If a moderator actually did their job and banned people that ruined players’ experiences, why would they be feared instead of praised? This does not make any sense.
The biggest problem is not the unfair bans. The real problem is that A created a negative reputation about DE. Even worse, because of A’s alleged former claims about how they were ‘related to DE’, people are suspecting nepotism is at play. This is damaging the reputation of DE directly, and to prevent potential misinformation spreading, I believe that it is wise for DE to take action about A, and further on, investigate other chat moderators’ actions to assure that false bans are prevented.
Accepting that problems exist is not going to harm the company’s reputation. Neglecting and ignoring the problems will. The issue regarding A has existed for more than 5 years, judging by the post upload dates on online communities (most notably Reddit). There are multiple testimonies about how DE was completely silent about A, while they are quick to respond to other issues.
What I (and potentially others) want for the community: PLEASE talk about A. We need to make noise to let DE notice the problem. As loud as possible. (But do note the rules of the Subreddit, since they are quick to delete posts against the rules) Please spread this post around as much as you can. I want them to know. I know this problem was ignored for years, but maybe we can make that change now.
What I want DE to do: Please make it make sense. A moderator, possibly even multiple judging by several claims, is banning multiple people without any offenses in chat. This is a huge problem for the players’ gaming experience and might even cause people to give up playing the game. This beautiful game. That’s a loss. It is illogical to harm your own reputation and hurt other players just to ‘protect’ a single moderator.
Digital Extremes, please clarify about this issue, and check the current state of chat moderation as a whole to further prevent potential bad actors like A. And no, this cannot be taken to Support anymore, because at this point this is not just my problem, but several others', and Support saying they will 'look into the problem' will not help whatsoever. (Clarification: They do work. They work majority of the time (if you have personal problems regarding moderation PLEASE inquire Support!!).)
We need a public statement, since the problem is public in nature and is not a few peoples' problems.
Thank you for reading, and feel free to add your thoughts below. I may have missed a few evidence, but I tried my best to compile things for context in a short amount of time.
EDIT: PLEASE DO NOT. DO NOT. NAME THE MODERATOR IN THE COMMENTS. (THIS APPLIES TO OTHER MODERATORS TOO.) PLEASE NO INDIRECT NAMING, TOO.
EDIT AGAIN: THE NAMING RULE PREVENTS ME FROM MENTIONING THE NAME. I said this so many times in the comments. I can't tell you. It's the rules in the Subreddit, and I will get my post deleted if I say their name.
Please read the post before commenting or rushing to conclusions. Most questions are answered in the post.

Unless somebody's spewing swear words after swear words... or spamming racist words, it's very unreasonable.

u/SaoDesu Jul 23 '26
yeah... it happened to me recently... i was calling myself a fucking dumbass and got banned lol
2
u/Any-Newspaper1922 Jul 24 '26
They will ban for profanity but let region chat be a cesspool of filth every single day. Whenever I look on there i feel bad for the first impressions of new players coming into the game. And current players who cannot engage in the chat whenever that stuff is going on (which is very often). They need to review the whole thing as it is clearly not working currently.
2
u/CrescendoFuri Jul 24 '26
Sometimes region chat can be funny, but when you have a toggle for a basic chat as an option then that kind of shows DE knows it’s a chaotic mess of weird in there and maybe should be worked on.

u/IchBinSchlecht Jul 23 '26
Well, it’s the typical type of person who is all for “free speech” and all that until that speech may or may not hurt their feelings or somebody else feelings.
It’s just how chronically online people act.

u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26
I genuinely do not understand this situation. All they have to do is remove the moderator(s) and actually put people that aren't willing to ban everybody in the server. It's so illogical. This problem is extremely easy to fix in my point of view... and they are not doing anything. Anything!
271
u/ferrenberg Jul 23 '26
It's easy to understand. The moderator is friends with people from DE
301
u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26
Honestly if I had a friend that did this in my company's game, I feel like I would easily shut them out... ... Nepotism is so difficult to understand for me. Really.

u/DatLoonArt Jul 23 '26
You are mixing people. That other person was basically ostracized from community & was getting threats for years.

u/Odd-Obligation9800 Jul 23 '26
It's because it's kind of a legacy program from when they were literally bankrupt and unable to pay their employees for months at a time. Like yeas it would be really easy, but I'm sitting here thinking 'why don't they' and literally the only reason I can think of is that they HAD reason to initiate a non payed volunteer moderating platform but at this point it seems like they just don't want to have to pay anyone for that job cus people will do it for free; albeit really poorly. They need to realize this isn't a niche game anymore, bite the bullet, and actually fucking hire people to do the moderating. They just seem to not want to tbh
43
u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26
Like, I think I can moderate better if I had the time. Unfortunately I have real life things to deal with so I don't have the time. ... :(
66
u/Skebs_ Jul 23 '26
We have no problem with volunteer chat mods IF they do like every other corpo, and assblast any cunts who are powertripping & reported (once verified by a legit live personnel).
The problem is DE for some insane reason refuses to do this industry standard procedure...
58
u/Vast_Damage963 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
It's because it's kind of a legacy program from when they were literally bankrupt and unable to pay their employees for months at a time.
You have your timeline all wrong. DE's financial troubles were in 2013. The Guides of the Lotus program ran from 2015-2019. Never has DE ever said the GotL program was b/c of any financial hardship. You're just making this up and the rest of your comment is speculative
21
u/AmazingSully Jul 23 '26
I work in this space, and this is a much easier thing to say than to do. Most moderators are unpaid volunteers, and trust me, it is not a job a normal person would want. Because of this all the wrong people are attracted to the position and that makes it REALLY difficult to find good moderators.
Every moderator position should be a paid position. It brings out much better applicants, and puts people in fear of losing their job (because there is actual consequence for going out of bounds). Right now the type of mods you get that apply are people who are looking for the power, and they have no problem abusing that power because the worst thing that happens to them is that they stop giving unpaid labour.
DE has an amazing community team, with a significant amount of investment behind it, so it's shocking to me that they don't do better here.
8
u/wyldmage Jul 23 '26
Most moderators are unpaid volunteers, and trust me, it is not a job a normal person would want. Because of this all the wrong people are attracted to the position and that makes it REALLY difficult to find good moderators.
This is the crux of it. And it goes far far beyond DE mods.
It's the same with, for example, HOAs. Conceptually, HOAs are great. 100 households that agree on a set of guidelines for their community, in order to increase overall property value. Like a Neighborhood Watch, turned up past 10. However, someone needs to manage those affairs. And nobody in the proto-HOA wants to pay more dues so that the HOA can hire someone responsible to do it. So instead, they need a volunteer from inside the community. Who is most likely to volunteer? The dad who works 40 hours/week, the mom who stays home to raise 3 children, or the empty nester who spends half his/her day watching TV? And then among the people with free time, the ones most likely to WANT to do it are the ones who like the feeling of being in charge, or who are extra fixated on making the community look amazing. Those are then of course the people who are most likely to nitpick over minor rules infractions, and give HOAs a bad name (like they have). It gets worse when you include management companies who get a cut of the fines they write, but that's another story.
Ingame mods should NOT be a volunteer position. Not after over a decade of profit from the game. Ingame mods should be a paid DE employee. Someone who is there for a paycheck, not a power trip.

u/Darklord9999111 Jul 23 '26
It reminds me of when those two used to be moderators and it was bad it was real bad but I don't think those two are moderators anymore so good to know it's still bad but just reminding you of the past it used to be bad I guess it still is bad
3
u/VeshWolfe Jul 23 '26
The Mods are friends of people in the company. They also probably know things about DE that they would rather not get out.
29
u/Vast_Damage963 Jul 23 '26
ever since the failure of the guides of the lotus
There's something to be said about how poorly that program turned out specifically b/c DE didn't want to upset the LGBTQ+ communities by properly punishing the right people. They seem genuinely paralyzed to do anything and these problems just keep happening in the most predictable fashion.
44
u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26
What does that have to do with LGBTQ+ communities? I don't know the context

I will never NOT find it funny that when the original backlash to the nepotism of chat mods was brought up, Rebecca grabbed a random bundle of moderated messages to try to appease the community in some "look they are doing good work guys!". And yet, one of the messages was literally calling out chat mod nepotism.
As much as I enjoy the game, this is one of the worst things DE has and it still makes no sense how they allow this to be so fucking awful.

u/Chansharp Jul 23 '26
And appointing their known good friend DE Bear as their boss. Who proceeded to be friendly with the community for like a week before dropping off the face of the planet. Also u/rebulast "Chat Moderation Update: Part 1!" with no Part 2 and clearly there wasn't a change

Ho my... Guides of the lotus, I haven't heard that name in ages, what happened to these guys ?
158
u/IWatchPeopleSleep Jul 23 '26
The fact that, even when not named, almost everybody knows exactly who this post is referring to should really make it clear just how big of a problem they are and just how badly their behaviour needs addressing by DE.
You can quite literally see a NOTICEABLE decrease in the amount of people in the chats (both active and lurking) when they’re online. If someone’s mere presence alone is enough to essentially shut down an entire chat server then they SHOULD NOT be moderating.
Mods are meant to address harmful and rule breaking content, not make an entire server paranoid about what they say and do, even when they are clearly not in violation of any rules to the point where they’d rather not say anything at all for fear of unjust chatbans.
41
u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26
Yes! Making people fear you is not the right way to moderate. If not anything, that should be a sign that you're way too stern or you're doing something wrong...
8
u/Midnaighte Jul 23 '26
Does the name start with an M?

Sorry, the only way to get rid of this abusive chat mod is to harm DEs reputation. If this chat mod does enough damage, DE will do something. I see a post about this chatmod like, every couple weeks. There needs to be multiple posts daily, top page, for multiple weeks.

u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26

We have moderatos there were close friends with people at DE that every time they fucked up and got called out for it simply changed their name and kept going, there is a nepotism issue at DE that have been pointed out years ago (and instead of doing something about it at the time they decided to attack the person exposing it) and nothing really changed because many of these people are still around and some of the new people are just as batshit crazy as the previous ones, so no point bothering, the best you can do is what i did, for about 6-7 years now i havent spoke in any moderated chats unless its a very pressing question, and i have very small conversations in party chats.

The community absolutely needs to light a fire under DE’s ass about putting a stop to this shit. I sadly don’t know how to do so, outside of keep calling attention to it, and not giving them a single cent and not playing the game until they get it through their skulls, though :/
23
u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
I initially wanted to call for a boycott, but I assumed not many would choose to do so. And I didn't think I would have enough firepower for that. I'm no influencer.

62
u/Eddie__Winter Jul 23 '26
I never quite understood the "naming" rule. If someone's being shitty wouldnt you want other people to know so you can avoid them? Censoring something and using a workaround you might as well just use what was originally intended.
5
u/Inven13 Jul 23 '26
Specially if that person is a moderator.
I can understand protecting a regular member but every member of a sub has the right to know who's moderating their server, or in this case, the game itself.

I mean too fuckin bad? This is an employee in power, not some rando player. And I know it's not r/warframe specific. The rule is insane. Antiwork won't even let people name companies and locations that are committing actual crimes because of the witch hunt rule.
Maybe reddit is just shit and we should all go somewhere else.-1
u/Eddie__Winter Jul 23 '26

18
u/AlfieSR Jul 23 '26
What's that got to do with anything? That's a warning to say people might be racist or swear or post links to porn or something online even for games that aim at a lower age rating. In no way does it mean that a game that starts at Mature should somehow be treated as if it's a less adult environment online.

Best way to shed light on this subject is to amplify the message on platforms where DE will actually see it. Have streamers talk about it, put it on their social media posts. I don’t think DE actually sees posts like these because they either get downvoted too much or they’re deleted.

There’s honestly not a ton of streamers/creators who will say anything that can be perceived as negative bc they want that sweet creator program status

u/Ravengm Jul 23 '26
DE absolutely sees posts like this, they just don't take action or comment on them
84
u/Aurobouros Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
It will never be addressed by DE unless someone manages to force an interaction regarding it. Like, someone in the middle of a major Tennocon event, when given the opportunity to speak on the mic, needs to just fling it out there, name the names everyone already knows, and ask why they're allowing those people to abuse their power and tarnish an otherwise extremely positive experience.
Like, I get it, at the end of the day the amount of people they're affecting with their moderation abuse is less than a drop in a bucket, but when it gets to the point where a chunk of people have responses ranging from "Oh yeah that guy, just don't bother talking in region if he's around and you'll be fine." to "Yeah, he automatically 2-weeks me whenever he sees my name in region chat." Most other companies would have done something about it by now.
29
u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26
Yeah, I really want to do that next Tennocon if I ever manage to get a chance to go there 💔 sounds like I'll get stones thrown at the eager fans but I don't care at this point.
21
u/RSmeep13 Jul 23 '26
Sadly Tennocon really isn't like that anymore. I've gone for years and this last year was (while great) a lot less interactive. Autographs used to be the best way to get to exchange a few words with people but now that's a lottery. In years past you'd see DE people come by the crowds and take photos and chat with people in line. But this last year due to the venue change I think there was a lot less of that.
3
u/Meeeper Jul 23 '26
You could shout it from the stands if you have enough buddies to make it loud enough to be heard by the people on the stage. If this shit is still happening by next year's Tennocon, I wouldn't blame you and I'd say DE deserves their event ruined for it.
42
u/MarsInAres Jul 23 '26
DE this is making me dislike you
27
u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26
I felt so bad while writing the post, because I love DE. I loved their creativity, passion, the way they tell stories for humans... and it's alll crumbling down because of a single moderator, possibly even the whole moderation system, they refused to deal with for years.
26
u/Admirable_Profit_729 Jul 23 '26
Let's not forget the fact that DE's auto-mod solely relies on archaic methods like insta-banning you for specific phrases.
Like sure, slurs and such are very much a guaranteed ban on the spot... but really? Saying the word 'MILF' is a bannable offense, even if an NPC in-game (Quincy) says it?
'Asshole' is a bannable offense when the word 'tard' isn't (even if it's technically ban-evading for intentionally misspelling a banned slur?)
Hell, even the phrase 'LIGMA BALLS' is a bannable offense. Meanwhile you can drop dogwhistles and misspell slurs and you'll get away scot-free.
Thank you DE.
11
u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26
I do agree that Automod is necessary for such a huge game where human moderators are not enough to monitor every message, but that is so bad. Some words do have to be taken off the list.
1
u/DeathpunkinGaming Jul 24 '26
Let's not forget that we can't even explain to people, how to get Ceph's reputation up.
Cause Sheogorath forbid we discuss... Traps. We can't even talk about Vauban, the Trapper Warframe.
2
u/slashcuddle Jul 23 '26
I'm a newish player and sadly I have to say the same. People have to deal with nepotism at their jobs they certainly don't want to see it bleeding into abuse of power in their games.
53
u/TrainingSolution4096 Jul 23 '26
If People made as much of a noise as they did complaining about Hildryn then DE will need to adress it.
19
u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26
Yup. (As a Hildryn main and somebody who knows nothing about ETA / EDA I am happy to not know about what they were talking about)
29
u/Cross55 Jul 23 '26
lol, they're never dealing with him, most people are pretty sure he's a nepo hire
12
u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26
I would be less frustrated if they just outright SAID IT. If they ever confirmed that this moderator in question cannot be removed because of 'company practices' or whatever. That'd actually make me more comfortable knowing they'd never change.
Then I'd take my leave in peace and never look back. But I am not sure what makes them so radio silent about this. Perhaps it is indeed the Nepotism
14
u/CV514 Jul 23 '26
Moderation in it's nature can't be done ultimately right, but Warframe in-game char moderation is not even an effort.
If players are reluctant to communicate there because of some mod being power trippy, this alone is more of an issue than anything could be said. Need an example? You won't see me writing in regional chat, ever. Not because I was banned or something, never happened. But because I don't feel comfortable socialising with strangers under questionable supervision that can operate under vague terms just because they are in position of doing whatever they want.
What's worse, this makes it look like I am disappointed in all the moderation, while in fact I have all my respect to those who actually silently keeping our moshpits civil.
4
u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26
Yes, that's one of the points I made in the post. No moderator would just ignore their own problem, if their moderation was actively making people fear chatting. That's not the right way to moderate at all.
71
u/LostLotus_A Jul 23 '26
Again PLEASE note the NAMING RULE!! Please don't name the moderator in the Subreddit, and please don't send harassments to DE or anybody related, that's going to fix nothing. Let's act mature and civil. Thank you

They won’t. It’s been a problem for literal years, one of the older popular YouTubers, “Trainman” Rahetalius has a whole video series of them abusing their power to the detriment of the player base and DE just plugged their ears on the issue. One of the few things that I’ve ever been genuinely frustrated with when it comes to DE.

Pretty funny to see all the "thank you" responses in q&a get removed for being off-topic then people getting banned for asking about it. I don't even have to open the player list at this point, it's always him.

UPDATE FROM DE_Megan:
"to address some Qs from the opening post by lostlotus_a:
support ticket claims are brought to our attention, investigated, and moderator reviews are conducted. we have systems and communications in place for frequent check-ins with our volunteer moderators, and should there be clear abuse of power or a violation of the guidelines, we act. we ask that you use the official support system, where you can include evidence/proof, and we can see exactly what happened in the logs/backend to validate the claims.
having said that, we are conducting a review.
no one is above the guidelines. not moderators, not staff, not even me."

We appreciate that lots of y'all have been bringing up your concerns regarding this issue, and we're doing what we can on our end to look into it and address those concerns as directly as possible. This includes reaching out ourselves as best as we can for an answer regarding this situation, and keeping people posted on whatever information is publicly available.
In the meantime, please direct any of your own personal concerns towards DE's support in accordance with the "Chat Moderator Code of Conduct" section on the Warframe Volunteer page. Please review those guidelines, and head over to the Warframe support site and prepare your own individual report to help make this process as streamlined as possible.
I would just like to reminded everyone that Rule 2 still exists, and with matters like this, it's important to keep that rule in mind specifically. There have already been instances in which people have been trigger-happy enough to jump the gun and overlook that rule. This is just a reddit page, and the direct impact that can be made here isn't quite as great as some would like to imagine. While it is appreciated that awareness is being raised, it's not a cure-all silver bullet to post it here repeatedly. We are not the in-game chat moderators, and we are not associated with the chat moderators in any professional capacity.
We're considering the following linked post as the "main thread" for this issue, and to prevent spam and keep the subreddit on-topic (and minimize the likelihood of continued Rule 2 shenanigans), we'll be redirecting traffic that way.
Keep on keeping on, gang.
Edit: IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Reddit’s sitewide Rule 3 requires users to respect others’ privacy. Reddit guidelines also prohibit inviting harassment or encouraging, participating in, or cheering on vigilantism. Raising concerns and submitting evidence through the appropriate channels is welcome; organizing dogpiles, pursuing individuals across platforms, sharing personal information, or encouraging others to “take matters into their own hands” is not. We quite literally risk getting the subreddit shut down by Reddit admins for continued violation, or if this ramps up in intensity.
The limited exception involving public figures does not provide blanket permission to target anyone occupying a visible community role. A volunteer chat moderator is not reasonably comparable to an elected official or corporate executive, nor are they comparable to game developers, content creators, and other publicly recognized media figures. Their ability to perform the role does not depend on broad public recognition, public authority, or maintaining a public-facing identity. Additionally, their influence on the game and the community is not comparable to the identified categories in significance or scope. Even where a genuine public figure is involved, Reddit’s rules still prohibit harassment and vigilantism.
Finally, appeals to the First Amendment or “free speech” do not override these rules. The First Amendment limits government restrictions on expression, but does not require a privately operated platform or subreddit to host harassment, personal information, threats, or other rule-breaking content. Users remain free to criticize conduct, but that freedom does not guarantee access to every platform or immunity from moderation.
