Finally, we are in the post worlds patch, and Varus got buffed several times now.

Not only did we got a sizeable buff to the passive Atk speed scaling, but also a scaling to AP and AD conversion on W-on-hit. As well as changes to Q Basedamage and Charging.
W exlosion lost base damage and got scaling.

So all in all:
- Varus scales now better than ever with Atk speed
- Scaling in general got better while basedamage dropped, making his early weaker and his late better
- Hitting fully Charged Q is now stronger and more important than ever. This makes his burst stronger, but also means if it gets dodged, you loose a crazy amount of damage.
- AP arguably got better as well, because of buffed scaling.

Builds:
Lethality got better because of higher basedamage and Scaling on Q. I personally still dont like it.

Hybrid on hit got better by a ton, as you now get more AD/AP per Atkspeed from passive. Which then feeds into higher scalings from W-on-Hit. Terminus now also has an AD and AP scaling on the on-hit passive. If you build Nashor like 4th item, you have a 30%+15%+10% =55% AP scaling on every auto, in addition to the 20%AD scaling. All of that getting better through Rageblade passive and can get AOE Damage thoruogh statik shiv.
That means, After Statik, Rageblade and Terminus, you could go Nashor, rabadon, Zhonya. Sorc boots might be better here than berserkers.

Crit seems to also benefit from the Changes to passive and W-On-hit.
Yuntal into Phantom dancer gives crazy ATk speed at only 2 items, feeding into Bonus ad and On-hit which is then strong with the amount of AA`s you chrun out, at 50% crit.
Follow this up with Infinity and LDR, BT and Guardian angel.
Sounds strong at one, two, three and more items.
But then again, if you go utility crit, why not pick ashe in the first place?

Ap sounds stronger as well,
Nashor gives a better one item powerspike now. Still, i dont belive Nashor into full AP is better than 3 Hybrid on-hit into Nash, Raba, zhonya.

I was Varus OTP 1 year ago before nerfs , I started it again after adjustments. Now it is not bad but also not that good. You can be useful in some way but can't carry , you get outscaled at 30min. It feels like playing Ult/poke Ashe. Still I will play this champ even with %45wr at least it is playable I love Varus

In case someone had this same bug in the past and managed to fix it: so when i charge full Q and then shoot it i have a delay of like 2 secs, the pj doesnt shoot it and still charges it

I play varus bot. Before this patch I would almost always go shiv or kraken > attack speed boots > rageblade > terminus with lethal tempo rune page. I’m not sure if it’s the most optimal build but i’ve had the most fun on it by a mile and I do really well on it most of the time. I’ve seen a lot of discussion on the lethality build with arcane comet runes but if i’m understanding correctly that turns varus into an artillery mage and attack speed/getting up close like i do wont work well together. Would trying to make a hybrid of the two work or do i have to strictly pick one or the other? i almost always fully charge my arrow regardless of the build path especially with the new changes. Maybe it depends on the matchup? like if i’m going against viktor/lux/any hook support maybe that lethality poke works better than on hit?

first youmu, then complete manamune and third voltaic. Muramana + Voltaic with a full charged Q could do lot of dmg.

Runes: Comet

Considering the recent patch completely nerfs thr W damage and seems to help the Q max lethality build, do you think Varus top is still playable? Which build/runes would you go to?

So basically riot did something this patch that made varus q damage fall of not exist. This means that after level 5 and a pickaxe your q (if you go ad) will oneshot the casters for the rest of the game, and your e finsihes of meeles. This makes varus the literal most op champ in the game, because now he has the strongst and least interactive waveclear of any champ in the game. So if varus feels op this is why.

So if I am understanding correctly, base damage/scaling was nerfed but AD and AP ratios buffed, so overall Varus is just buffed across the board mid-late game once you have items? or am I misjudging the notes?

I read it and i don´t feel sure about what is going to be the best runes and build, it seems like a buff for lethality ones (wich are dead btw)

Hi! I always liked the flexibility around Varus builds and how he can adapt to any team comp. But for a long time I always wondered what build was the best. So I tested it.

I spent some time on practice tool testing with different target dummies of different HP and resistances an onhit build, a crit build and an ap build and stumbled upon surprising data that made me do this post and ask the question. Why the standard build on Varus is onhit, when it deals the least damage?

Upon testing, onhit at 2 items is the one which deals the most damage in normal scenarios, but not by much, but at 4 and 6 items, is quite the opposite; ap or crit deals way more damage, and the only particular case where onhit deals more damage than the crit build is fixed if you change just one item on the crit build for another. So, in all cases, in mid/late game, crit is the best in general and ap is the best in a very particular cases.

So my question is, is onhit the worst build on Varus? If I look at the numbers, in mid/late game, it is, but if onhit is the standard build, it must be for something. What am I missing?

Now what they mean with ‘larger work on him to make his builds make sense’ is something i’m very sure they will not handle well. I’m honestly prepared for the worst and ready to lose the champion i’ve loved for years now, probably next year.
