Hello! I'm tearing my hair out trying to understand what has happened to my network and how to fix it. It's been pretty solid for a long time and I haven't really made any drastic changes, but the end user experience has been bad the last month or so...
Quick overview
- UCG Fiber
- 10G DAC to a USW24 Pro Max
- Edge connections from that to one G5 Turret (via a PoE injector), a Brother printer, Philips Hue hub, a HP N54L Microserver, a pair of 2.5G ports aggregated to a Thinkcentre for VMs/LXCs and a single 1G for Proxmox itself
- One connection again via a PoE injector to an AC Pro ceiling mounted on the top floor of my townhouse
- Then other onward switches - 2 Flex Minis w/ a handful of simple edge devices connected, 1 Flex 2.5G with my main PCs and work laptop docks, 1 USW Ultra again via injector in my detached garage powering 4 more G5 Turrets and an UAP AC-LITE (the garage AP is not meshing and is set to low power to avoid it ever stealing devices from the in-house AP)
As I say everything has been working great for a long time, but recently a few issues have come up which may or may not be related. The first is that there was a period where a lot of devices (mainly wireless ones) were seemingly disconnecting and reconnecting extremely regularly and I was seeing the "STP Convergence" warning. I eventually tracked this down to the fact that I hadn't aggregated the 2x 2.5G ports on the Proxmox host and set them as STP Edge. I also discovered one of the leaf switches was flapping, I suspect a bad cable somewhere - so I unplugged it from the network entirely to try and rule it out.
However whilst things are a lot better than they were, both my wife's iPhone and my Pixel plus a few other wireless devices seem to be disconnecting and then immediately reconnecting (and in a way where there is an obvious interruption, e.g. you open a browser and it's frozen for a good 10+ seconds before it reconnects and loads, and you sometimes see the phone drop from the network briefly and rejoin).
The only other changes I have made outside of ones trying to troubleshoot this were adding a new SSID/wireless network for the Steam Frame (but I disabled this some time ago when I thought it might be contributing)
Any tips at all on where to start investigating this? The thought has occurred to me that the signal strength to the upstairs AP could be responsible, but as I say it's been stable and fine for ages - also I've seen the disconnects happen when stood right by the AP so I don't think it's that...
