Casual Academic

Hey guys,

Long story short, I applied for a casual academic role as a tutor for an engineering subject I scored highly in. The unit coordinator sent me an email about 3 weeks ago telling me I got the role and to wait while he allocates classes. A few days ago he sends a follow up email saying that he can no longer give me the class because “university guidelines have changed” and I can’t teach as an undergrad. He said I can apply for an exemption. Does anyone have any recommendations on next step. Should I contact head of engineering or SRC? Did anyone else experience anything similar?

Answering the 3 most common questions on this subreddit

Every semester I see the same 3 questions asked on this subreddit from new students so here is a quick answer to them lol:

  1. Should I come here or go to UNSW/UniMelb?

Answer: The prestige difference between Usyd and those 2 unis is, for the most cases, much smaller than people think. Also, most of us here never attended UNSW or UniMelb. Do your own research.

  1. Should I join Dalyell?

Answer: Yes. You can always leave later if you don’t like it.

  1. Is my timetable good?

Answer: If there is any red, there is a clash that you wanna look into. Otherwise, yea its probably fine. Please be aware of your attendance requirements (should be written in the UoS outline - just google the course code and you should see it)

EDIT: There are some very good Q and A for other questions in the comments. Be sure to check them out!

Speech Pathology at USYD vs MQ

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I am a first-year student at Macquarie Uni in Speech and Hearing Sciences, and I'm considering switching to the Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology), but since I have almost completed Year 1, I'm unsure whether it is worth it to restart from Year 1 at USYD or continue at MQ and apply for the masters. I am not in love with MQ's linguistics focus or uni culture, but I am also unsure whether USYD would be much better. For reference, based on semester 1, I have a current WAM of 81, and would end up finishing with a master's, whereas at USYD I would finish with an accredited bachelor's, which may also be cheaper. Both would take me the same amount of time, 5 years, as I likely have to start in Year 1 at USYD. As im in the year 2026 syllabus, I also don't have any flexibility with units, every unit is a required one.

What do you guys think I should do?

Thanks :)

📖Course or Unit Credit Transfer

I have applied to usyd and got the unconditional offer letter on September however my credit is still being assessed it’s November almost. Now the agent is saying that usyd representative told “ it’s best for me” to accept the offer first pay the deposit and wait for the credit assessment, which mind it she told has 50/50 chance of being accepted. But paying initial payment will speed up the process and I will have results before mid November.
I need advise now in case I don’t qualify for credit transfer should I try different uni? Like uts or macq?
And still the visa application process is pending. I am scared for rejection with the current conditions of Australia international student visa. I am really confused.
Seeking help from the those who went through credit transfer internationally. I am aiming for feb intak2027, 1+2

Students that constantly talk in study spaces/libraries

There are only about 2-3, maybe 4 for some, weeks left till final exams. Study spaces are packed with students trying to complete assignments, team projects, and catch up or get ahead. Regardless, people are trying their best...

But there's always some who disrupt and just take up space, chatting/gossiping. There are plenty of other places to go to talk and hang out.

Can we just please respect one another's time, efforts, and autonomy without selfish entitlement or ignorance? I have to ask 3-4 times sometimes.

How long is Special Consideration taking to process recently?

Hi everyone!
I submitted my Special Consideration application on 21 October, and it’s still showing as pending.
I know the university says applications are usually processed within a few working days, but I’m wondering how long it’s actually been taking recently, especially around this time of semester.
Has anyone applied for SC in the past couple of weeks? If so, how many business days did it take for you to receive a decision?
Also, has anyone had their application take longer than the estimated processing time but still get approved?
I’ve been checking my application status quite often and feeling pretty anxious about the wait, so I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences.
Thank you so much! :)

Master of Diagnostic Radiogrpahy

Hey guys! I recently applied to this masters degree in the hopes of getting CSP. However I’ve been given a conditional offer that’s listed under full-paying fee. I was really keen on getting the CSP places as this was the only way I’d actually pursue studying this field of science. Just wanted to know what the next steps could be for me if you guys have any ideas or suggestions, and what I should do… kinda at a crossroads right now.

WAM for IPT to Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) / Bach. of Arts

I know the official WAM to ATAR translation is to aim for 75+ WAM for a 90 ATAR- but just curious if anyone was able to transfer with a lower WAM?

Currently doing Bach. of Arts.

Current WAM: 81 from S1.

Projected WAM for S2: i) Optimistic: 78 ii) Realistic: 70

The ATAR selection rank is 91~ for Bach. Eng (Hons) / Bach. of Arts.

P.S looking to transfer during the 2027 S2 intake (in case that's relevant).

Any other general advice is greatly appreciated if you did Bach. Eng (Hons) / Bach. of Arts.

Thanks.

🏠 Accommodation UniLodge Ultimo private studio | Student lease takeover | Flexible move-in

Private furnished studio at UniLodge Ultimo, 437 Wattle Street, near Broadway Shopping Centre. This is a self-contained studio with your own bathroom and kitchenette, not a room in a shared apartment. Student accommodation only, with any takeover subject to UniLodge approval.

I’m graduating and looking for someone to take over my accommodation from around 14 November 2026. The move-in date is negotiable, and my current agreement ends on 4 February 2027.

The advertised $675/week is my current rent, including utilities and Wi-Fi. The rent and terms for an incoming resident must be confirmed with UniLodge.

The studio is furnished and has air conditioning. The building has shared laundry facilities, common areas and resident events. I’ve personally found the room quiet during my stay.

For anyone planning to stay longer: my understanding is that moving in before 30 November 2026 and renewing for one year starting in February 2027 may qualify you for a $749/week renewal rate plus $1,000 credit. The quoted rate for new residents moving in during February is $799/week. UniLodge must confirm eligibility and all offer terms. These rates are separate from the takeover rent before February.

Please message me with your preferred move-in date, intended length of stay and student status. I can then check the applicable rent and arrangements with management.

This is UniLodge Ultimo on Wattle Street, not UniLodge on Broadway. Room photos were taken during my tenancy in 2024; the common-area photo is from October 2026. Personal belongings shown are not included.

Course transfer engineering

Close to finishing 2nd year at USYD in Science majoring in maths. Wanting to transfer into double degree in elec engineering and Science. However, I'm not sure if my WAM will be competitive enough to transfer, with my wam likely to sit around 70 after this sem. ATAR was mid 80's so not relying on that either. Just wanting any insight. My main motive is that I'm hoping engineering can strengthen job opportunities even though it might tag on extra time.

Is the English major actually that bad?

I was thinking about doing an English major, but I've seen people say that they mark more harshly than other departments, and that their marking rubrics and feedback are unclear. Is it actually that bad or is it overblown?

Single Room at QMB lease takeover

Looking for someone to take over my Single Room at QMB (move in within next 2-3 weeks). I’m moving out soon and my lease is till the end of the year, Dec 30. Rent is 382 per week. 15-20 min walk to campus, relatively close to Susan Wakil and John Woolley. Great short stay for USYD students doing a summer course or language program, or someone who’s already received an offer at QMB for 2027 and wants to move in earlier.

Pls dm if you’re keen!
