Weekly General Discussion Thread

Welcome to our first weekly open/general discussion thread!

We are introducing this thread which will be posted weekly on Mondays for general discussion about the team and smaller thoughts that may not warrant their own post.

That can include news, recent game play, thoughts about the roster and lineups, upcoming games, etc. We are hoping this will be a way continue and streamline discussion and provide a place for general chat, and that it will be utilized more leading up to the World Cup next summer.

Qualifiers for the 2027 WWC in late November for the USWNT. It's feasible Girma could miss out on these matches. 😕

Bringing this over from a thread I saw on the NWSL subreddit because I’m curious what everyone thinks. Maybe I’m a little biased being from San Diego, and I know she’s still super young, but Melanie Barcenas... girl...

I don’t think she’s quite ready for this World Cup cycle, but I genuinely see a bright future for her with the national team.

The way she can cut inside and absolutely RIP a shot, especially at her size, is insane! And her 1v1 dribbling ability? I honestly haven’t seen someone with that kind of flair and confidence since Tobin Heath.

I really think she could be something special for the USWNT down the road....

Analysis of recent match against Spain

This analysis I found on YouTube is incredible. The most accurate by far and it highlights some really nice changes between the first and second game that I didn't quite catch.

https://youtu.be/rgJ9HfBVphI?si=NpMSKOHq3OJMV0zM

In own personal opinion, though, and obviously I'm not at practice or training or anything, but I really think at this point in their careers, Tara Rudd is better than Tierna Davidson. I think Davidson lacks speed and Rudd is more athletic. I wish Tara had been given some minutes or a chance to see how she pairs with Kennedy Wesley this camp. I know Girma will be the starter injury permitting but my opinion has Rudd (or with hesitation, potentially Wesley) alongside her.

Offense wise, I think Mal brings something that nobody else ever has, past or present. I don't really know what it is, the team just always seems to do better when she's there. Maybe she's got the leadership, maybe she connects well with the younger players age-wise but has the leadership of the veterans, or maybe she just has the IT factor. I think she has an incredible work ethic and is such a great player. If she's on the field for us at the World Cup, we go far. If she were on the field for us in 2023, we likely would have gotten at least through semi's.

Ashley Sanchez should have been called up in June. She came into this camp with so much to prove and proved it all and then some - if she keeps this up, she could start in the World Cup. IMO she does more than A. Thompson and she deserves every second she spends on the field.

Why is the USWNT failing?

2015 was the first time I watched womens soccer. The local station here in Ireland showed the 2015 Womens World Cup that USA won. It seemed USWNT was just miles ahead of everyone in every aspect. Post covid it feels like the USWNT are falling off a cliff. Feels like the warning signs have been there since the embarrassment of the last World Cup. In my opinon the NWSL is by far the best league in the world based off competitiveness and actually feels like the girls are actually respected by having proper stadiums. Yes Barcelona and Lyon are incredible teams but they learn nothing winning every game 6-0 while in NWSL anyone can beat anyone. I seen people say perhaps the lack of NWSL academies is a major issue compared to Spain who have multiple divisions and B teams which is why they have taken over as the Queen's of Soccer. How they are value youth soccer unlike the USWNT who dont value u17/u20 World Cups by not releasing their best players. Is this the reason why USWNT missed out on someone like Scarlett Camberos or the other Mexican/American girls? People here in Ireland dont understand how she went undrafted but is now ballon d'or candidate after winning everything possible in the region. Please let me know your opinions people and educate me more about the USWNT.

Thoughts USA fans? All I’m gonna say is haters are gonna hate. I’ve been saying for a few days now and I’m gonna say it on here there’s literally 4 teams that can go win that Women’s World Cup next summer and I honestly believe that there’s only 3 potential teams that I view as contenders and can compete with and go toe to toe with Spain and stop their super team from going back to back. That is US, England and Brazil. Some one in the comments section in this video said Germany have a good chance but I’m pretty skeptical and on the fence on that. Some people have said Japan have a good chance of stopping Spain but from what i heard is that their new coach is a bit meh.

I think I’m kinda sold on Cooper as an outside back. Last window in Brazil, I was feeling it a little bit, but this past camp? Yeah, she REALLY grew on me. Modern day outside backs are basically attackers half the time anyway, and Cooper’s got that attacking bag AND can hold it down defensively. Is she the perfect Dunn replacement? 👀🤔

POST MATCH Why has goal scoring gotten worse?

I’ve been doing a study of our attack over the last few years and it’s become clear to me that we aren’t developing goal scorers like we used to and I don’t know what’s happened. This seems to have been noticeable ever since the Vlatko era.

Point one I’ve noticed: we don’t really score off set pieces. It was common in years past to put 3 goals past a weak opponent due to set pieces but that obviously doesn’t happen anymore. I think it’s just not valued anymore by the coaching staff or the players. I remember seeing an interview with Ally Sentnor where she said that she “can’t score with her head” and that I think is representative of most of our players. Even players like Rodman who are tall and can beat players in the air are poor when it comes to directing it on frame.

Point two I’ve noticed: There is a lot of disconnectedness from our attackers. I just don’t think our players play well together or link up well with each other. If you watch Rodman with Fox there is not much link up play. Most of our players don’t work well with each other. I do think this is mostly down to the inconsistent lineups. I think it could definitely improve with more time but I do think a lot of our players are bad in tight spaces and more transitional

There is no point 3 but I would just say the general clinical ability of our players is just not the appropriate standard. 10 years ago we had players who would come off the bench and use their chance to score a goal. Now we have loads of players who have been on the team for ages and haven’t scored much. People used to complain about Carli Lloyd later in her career for blasting it way over but she always had a good record from the bench. Maybe this is just how we are now but I hope it can change.

We could’ve hung FOUR on Spain that second half.

Last game I said how glad I was to see Mallory and Ashley getting minutes. Boom. Speed, desire, grit and pure class.

There is zero reason that the US shouldn’t have the fastest team in the world, from the back to the front. Every sub made tonight injected more pace into the US side and it showed. Tactics, experience, aggression, and IQ are important only if you can leverage them more quickly than the other team.

I feel like we saw a generational shift tonight. A double friendly against the number one team in the world. The kids from the last World Cup and Olympics are now the leaders. The debutantes are a different breed: Raised and trained in an era of modern, technical football, they possess next-level spatial awareness and holding abilities.

There can be little doubt that there is a World Cup winning team in the heart of this camp. Just give Emma the contract through 2031.

Great display of future potential from both the Men and Women.
