Looking to add new moderators

Hey yall, I am not all that active on reddit these days and looks like most of the other mods arent either. A couple of them posted within the last month in other communities, and the rest of them havent posted/commented in years.

So it looks like it's time for some new mods!

Feel free to comment on here as to why you think you'd make a good moderator and uhh, idk I guess I'll start with the top 3 most upvoted comments as new mods? Unless yall have better ideas. But yeah its time to get some current students as mods and not alumni who are 10+ years out from college.

Edit: jeez i suck at typing on phones. Also looks like we are all "inactive" so I am trying to get permissions back so I can add new people

Chances

Hello! I am a Miami native who moved to GA. My essay is deeply personal and centers on that experience. I am applying ED and for financial aid. I'm not sure whether I should check "no" for financial aid. Also, my major is Nursing.

Stats are:

  • 92/100 W. GPA
  • 1330 SAT (I know)
  • 10 dual enrollment Classes
  • 2 AP's
  • 7 Honors
  • Upward trend (I had undiagnosed ADHD, which is in my counselor's letter of recommendation)
  • Event coordinator of the Multicultural Association
  • Hospital volunteering
  • Food bank volunteering
  • HOSA, DECA, and Hispanic Organization Promoting Education member
  • 2 Jobs
  • Good essay

question regarding application deadline

The November 1st deadline for early action is coming up— but I have yet to get my recommendation letter.

Is the recommendation letter part of the documents required before November 1st, or is it part of the documents that have the extended deadline after applying?

What are my chances of getting into UM?

Hi everyone! I'm aware my chances of getting in are relatively low but I was hoping someone could give me a reference.

Applying: UM EA College of Arts and Sciences, Political Science Major

Applying for financial aid

SAT: 1240 Superscore (660 RW, 540 Math) ACT: 28 (31 English, 35 Reading, 17 Math)

GPA: 5.0 W / 4.72 UW

APs: 2 - World, Hug

College courses: Full associates by time of graduation, 1 class with Miami (Marching Band)

Main ECs: Tenor Saxophonist, UM Frost Band of the Hour, Founder & Co-President of Law club on College Campus, Intern at Legal Aid firm in 9th grade, Part time job, Peer mentor 10th & 12th grade

PSA: High income but parents cannot afford to pay for college (which is why I'm applying EA) but deliberating on whether I should wait till RD to get my Math ACT score up. I am applying as a first year but I'm considering applying as a transfer if I don't get in as a first year.

Please lmk what you'd reccomend! I'd really appreciate it!!

Does turning down a UMiami Pre-College offer last year hurt my chances of getting accepted again?

ast year, I applied to the University of Miami's Pre-College Summer Program for engineering. I didn't get accepted into engineering, but they offered me a spot in the business program instead. I ended up not attending because engineering was what I really wanted to study.

I'm planning to apply again this year for engineering, hopefully through Early Action. Looking back, I kind of regret not going last year, especially because UM is one of my top choices for college.

I'm wondering if declining the offer last year could hurt my chances of getting accepted into the engineering program this time around. Would they even take that into consideration?

I'm also thinking that if I don't get into engineering again, I'll just accept whatever other program they offer me because I really want the opportunity to experience UM before applying to college.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or reapplied to the Pre-College Program after declining an offer? Also, does attending the summer program help at all when applying to UM for undergrad?

Can someone please advice me

Hiii I’m an international student from Ghana and I’m really confused about how aid works.

My parents technically have enough to pay the full tuition but it would be quite strenuous on us considering they pay for our ENTIRE extended families livelihoods as well (all my like 10+ cousins tuition and even our family abroad’s rent and more) also their income fluctuates a LOT since they’re self employed

If they put the house value, their bank statements etc I’m sure we wouldn’t qualify. In that case, would it be redundant for me to request for aid? I’m only requesting because I feel it would help (I can pay about 65k/yr comfortably) but if they will just calculate that we don’t need it, is it better for me to apply with no aid in order to boost my chances since I won’t get it anyways? Or should I still try requesting for aid eventho that hurts chances a lot? Could I still get aid even if we make a lot?

Thoughts on MS Media Management

Hi! I am planning to apply for the MS Media Management program for Fall 2027, and I wanted to hear from students/alumni about their experience or take on the program. Are the professors and courses of great quality?

Crucially, how are the job prospects after? I’m also an international student (who did her bachelors in the US), so I want to know if it is a good program for job placements/sponsorship as a non-citizen? Any comments or feedback on the program would be super helpful!

How is UMiami for veterans

Hello y’all I’m keeping this short but I’m active duty right now and was thinking about getting out and trying to go to UMiami as it’s close to home. Just looking for any people that have been in my position if there are any things to know about applying as a veteran and if there’s any culture of the sort around there. Bonus points if anyone knows about the Air Force ROTC program as a vet. Thank you all.

Political Science Majors: Does anyone have any insight on Ariel Powell?

Hi! Incoming freshman here planning out my schedule!

What are her teaching methods? Is she a hard professor? I can’t find her on rate my professor so I’m looking for any insight on her. She’s teaching a BUNCH of poli sci classes this semester so pretty much anything on her would be nice.

PS: if you have any specific classes and the assignments she assigns, that would be awesome.

Chance me for UMiami ED I — 3.1 GPA, 35 ACT, strong upward trend

Miami is my first choice. Looking for honest opinions, especially from people who applied with a low GPA and high test score.
Academics
Around 3.1 unweighted GPA.
35 ACT: 36 English, 36 Reading, 32 Math.
Strong upward trend: roughly 79–81 averages early in high school, then 88–90 junior year.
Private school in NY with a dual secular/Judaic curriculum and around nine classes.
My school didn’t permit me to take AP/DE courses until senior year because of my earlier grades. Currently taking DE Calculus and AP Psychology.
Health circumstances affected my earlier performance; planning to explain these and the course restrictions with counselor support.
Activities
Varsity tennis throughout high school; team won a championship.
Class president.
Ticket-reselling business with approximately $30,000 in sales.
Building a ticket marketplace.
Founded a nonprofit focused on community service.
Volunteering with children facing serious illnesses.
Real estate internship.
Tennis coaching and a babysitting job.
Clubs and other community service.
Application
Applying ED I.
Not requesting financial aid.
Open to spring admission.
Consistent demonstrated interest through campus visits, academic experiences and direct contact with admissions.
How competitive is this realistically? If you had a similar profile, what was your outcome, and did you apply ED, EA or RD?

HELPPP

Hey guys, I’m Moroccan and currently in my first semester of CS at Al Akhawayn University in Morocco. I got an 18.53/20 on my Bac and a 1340 SAT, and my dream is to study in the US, especially at the University of Miami. The problem is that my family can’t afford US tuition, so I’d need a full ride or something close to it. Since I’ve already started university after high school, am I basically forced to apply as a transfer everywhere, or do some universities still let students in my situation apply as freshmen? I’m worried that transfer students have way fewer scholarship opportunities, especially for international students. Are there universities that actually offer full rides to international transfers, or should I focus on schools where I can get good aid as a freshman if their policies allow it? Some scholarship deadlines are coming up soon, and I don’t want to miss my chances because I misunderstood the process. If anyone has been in a similar situation or knows universities worth looking into, I’d really appreciate the advice.
My initial plan was applying as a transfer but I would do anything to not kill any chance I got.
My essay is still not done and most of my projects that will be present in my transfer application wont be in my freshman application
I just wanna know please what to do
thanks
its all about the U, it is my dream destination.

intl student stats

Hi guys im a female international student from a low income family. I am planning on applying thru ED I so I really need opinions on whether my stats are good enough.

GPA: 3.99uw. we dont have weighted gpa here.

SAT: 1450 (770Math / 680 RW) - my r&w is pretty low but i have ielts 8.0??

I did igcse/as levels and is doing 3 a levels this year. igcse grades are A*A*ABBC whereas as levels are AB. (retaking another as level because i got U)

ECs: internship at a tech company, 300+ hours of volunteering, tutoring(math, english, it), paid teaching(english), working at a family business, 2 leadership positions, worked as a liaison officer(translator also) x2, babysitting my 1 year old sister..etc theyre pretty mid

Our school is a pretty small public school and we only 52 students in our grade so we dont do class rank. Are my stats enough?

so right now I have an 1180 SAT and I wanted to do early decision but I also wanted to take the sat one more time. The scores will come out after the material deadline for early decision. Would it be a better idea to do early decision have a week or score or to have a strong score for early action or early decision 2. does anyone know the difference between ed 1 and 2?
