The community rules have been updated
All the mods have come together to revise the rules. The broad spirit remains the same, however there should hopefully be a bit more clarity on each point.
Thank you for bearing with us over this difficult period, and we hope to continue to provide a space for robust ans lively debate of Green politics.

Discussion Outside of Zack Polanski who do you like? :)
Often when it comes to Green Parties in a country the focus is on the national leader.
Here in Canada that would have been Elizabeth May now turning into Mike Morrice (Morrice like Polanski being an absolutely fantastic human being and great new leader of the national party) - https://www.reddit.com/r/GreenPartyOfCanada/comments/1xh7373/green_party_of_canada_mike_morrice_explains_what/
We also have our provincial party leaders and members:
- Mike Schreiner is the leader of the Ontario Greens and often does videos on the Housing Crisis in the province/nation. He and Aislinn Clancy come off incredibly community focused and really about helping the working class and most vulnerable with affordability of life/quality of life.
- We also have a new Green Party of British Columbia leader - Emily Lowan. She is a young energetic leader who has really created excitement around the provincial party. She comes with a type of Eco-Socialist energy and is big not just on climate/environmental issues but also on the Labour Movement and other progressive focuses.
When it comes to Green leaders and members outside of Zack Polanski in your area who do you like and why? :)
I thought it may be nice to build awareness and also recognize other amazing leaders/members!
Shout out to all those trying to protect the planet and sentient life therein alongside making the world a generally brighter & better place! :D

GPEW What do the GPEW emails look like?
Following the conference in Brighton, and the news around its controversial vote being the first I heard of it, I looked for an answer as to how that happened. Nothing in my emails, no option on the website, last thing I had left was to email support (@ gp org uk)
Support got back to me 3 weeks later as to where my emails are (are not) going. To summarise. "Thanks for waiting. Sorry you had an issue. Be subscribed. We're not responsible. Here's a guide page."
Within that guide it points out that the way to manage my email notifications is to click the unsubscribe button on an email. Heaven help me if I had none at all. Then, unstated in the guide, I had to scroll to the bottom of that page and find the final text link "view all of your subscriptions". Finally, on another third party page via a unsubscribe link and form, do I see all four of my email subscriptions. GPEW list is the top one.
If I'm subscribed, I must be blind. I don't have any email about the conference, or even things that look national in nature. I've checked spam, I've checked for anything being filtered. Nothing.
So what am I supposed to see here please? I'd rather not wait three more weeks from support.
(Sorry if this seems a bit ranty. I've tried to cut it back but this is frustrating)

Climate & Nature UK spending on ‘fairytale’ carbon capture tech is a national embarrassment, chancellor told | Carbon capture and storage (CCS)
“CCS is a tech fairytale,” the naturalist and broadcaster said. “It should be a national embarrassment that the UK is pumping more taxpayer money into it than any other country in the world. This budget is a chance to put things right.”
This is the quotation from Chris Packham. He might be correct -- I don't know. It's not my expertise.
However, I do know that the climate change committee's 7th budget means the UK will have colossal amounts of unabated emissions by 2050. Just aviation alone is sufficient to mean we don't reach net-zero from its contrails pollution alone.
For people who oppose CCS what do they see as the alternative to invest in?
- Forcing things like aviation to fully decarbonise (add cement, steel, home-heating, etc)
- Complexities for agriculture and aviation with non-CO2 emissions
- Scrapping the 2019 Net-Zero act with one of these 3 options:
- Scrap entirely this act and 2008 Climate Act
- Revert back to 80% emissions reduction of the 2008 Climate Act
- Delay the net-zero timeline beyond 2050
- Find alternative other robust ways to achieve negative emissions other than CCS.
- This could be mass option of rock weathering, biochar, etc.
I don't think it is sufficient to be against CCS without being pro something else. I don't know what the something else should be. I'd like to see aviation limited but it's clearly not something politically possible. What do people see as the alternative to the guaranteed reality that without something of negative emissions we will be still contributing to climate heating by 2050.

Discussion ‘No one saves the planet if it hits their pocket’: UK heat pump installers fear planned subsidy cuts | Heat pumps
I've seen a worrying narrative developing online with regard to heatpumps and the BUS (boiler upgrade scheme) grant in the UK. People seem to think that the BUS grant is being taken by the companies as pure profit and they are inflating their costs to basically price gouge people.
Then they say that by cutting or scrapping the grant entirely heatpumps will suddenly become really cheap and affordable for all. People who want to get a heatpump on heatpump subreddits are repeating this uncritically, coming out in support of cutting or scrapping the BUS grant. It's worrying and where has this false narrative come from? 75% of one company's customers require the grant to afford this. You don't do that to a nascent industry when only 0.35 per 1000 households have a heatpump and expect things to get better (in Norway it's 632 per 1000 households).
If the government do end up cutting state support for heatpumps while committing to the biggest spend in the developed world on the snake oil that is carbon capture at scale then they really have lost the plot and it will go down in history as one of the most boneheaded political decisions ever:
If it were up to me I'd move the £24 billion earmarked for carbon capture (which some say is a gross underestimate: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/jul/08/carbon-capture-con-andy-burnham-fossil-fuels-renewables) to heatpumps and make it free for anyone who is not a millionaire to get one. It would be infinitely more effective and would more than pay for itself I believe.
