COMPLAINTS Why is almost everyone on Twitter so comfortable being racist?

I’ve never seen this much racism in my life. Why the hell are people just being racist to other races and other people don’t call them out on it? It’s a basic thing you learn in history class, Racism is bad, and having the racist mindset makes you a bad person. I genuinely never seen this much slurs be thrown around like it’s a daily occurrence. If anyone on Twitter were to be like this in real life, nobody would like them.

Like racist people exist in real life, but everyone hates them, people on twitter get to be racist and people agree and whenever someone disagrees, they get called slurs. It’s making me wonder if these people are bots because no one could ever be this racist without thinking of the consequences.

Pre-Musk, Twitter was pretty strict about racism and other expressions of hate speech. Often inconsistent and annoying, but generally strict.

One of Musk's promises when he took over was to "restore free speech", and the new company specifically un-banned a number of ultra-right and neo-nazi accounts that had been kicked off old Twitter.

The worst kind of people all took this as a signal that it was okay to be racist fuckheads on "X"... and since they don't get punished or banned for it anymore, they flourish.

u/deviltrombone 3d ago

Old Twitter (@jack and Dick Costolo) banned me for making jokes such as "25th Amendment Schizoid Man", a play on the King Crimson song title to describe that orange thing in its first term while everyone was uselessly crying for the 25th amendment to be invoked, as they're still uselessly crying. I also got banned for referring to its wife as a "skank's skank" in response to the nudies of her that had been posted thousands of times. "Hate speech", they called it. I've never seen such a bunch of ridiculous mods outside of a few reddit subs I can think of.

Not long after, I concluded Twitter is a readonly medium for people I follow, and looking at it today, the replies are uniformly pointless, witless garbage, and I'm talking about apparent real people. Real shit userbase, and the worst design for conversation that's ever been invented. That said, it seems to be mostly Nazis and Russian and other bots, and I still think they sell spam packages with prices going up with the number of daily alternates they give you to make blocking posters pointless. Look at any stock ticker, for example, and try to convince me otherwise. lol

That's why the bastard picked an X. It's just a Swastika with the lines on each spoke removed.

Nazi bastard isn't even subtle.

2

u/le-churchx 2d ago

Oh but was it though.

-3

u/konlon15_rblx 2d ago

Elon has been wanting to name products "X" for decades, long before he was right-wing politically...

-17

u/Far-Rub-6366 2d ago

Before, twitter was very left leaning, leftist could say the craziest shit without any consequences.

After musk bought twitter, it's the polar opposite.

And yes, both then and now, the moderation is pretty much "random" 2 near identical posts, can be treated very differently.

From before, musk, i saw hidden camera videos of twitter content moderators that more or less openly (On hidden camera ,but to other people) said, they very much moderated, based off of their own political views, now 99% of all moderation is done by AI, based off of reports from users.

If x users report a post for "violence" the AI will just flag it and assume it is true even if there is nothing violent in the post and getting a "real person" to look at the post is almost impossible

10

u/LordNikon2600 2d ago

This is a bot.. look at all the comments from the account.. full on Tesla Elon glazer

-8

u/Far-Rub-6366 2d ago

I just need to get clarification, are you calling me or the guy i replied to, a bot ?

6

u/chance000000 2d ago

Typical bot response

13

u/sorasoushi27 2d ago

Because racism is not punished by twitter's algorithms. In fact, they support it to spike engagements. I reported some pretty gross statements and almost every time they said that statement did not violate their terms.

12

u/PB_Jelly_444 2d ago

Think a majority is just a bunch of bots, bc they want to push the idea and convince the weak, that all problems reside in immigration.

3

u/TheRealBejeezus 2d ago

It works. And not just in America. Most of the right wing uprisings in Europe have been bot-fueled rage at immigration.

People are gullible all over.

86

u/Rustmutt 3d ago

Because it’s a Nazi site owned by a Nazi and he lets it happen.

-20

u/SamhainXCII 3d ago

Keep making that word mean nothing some more please.

7

u/Single_While6331 2d ago

Elon’s twitter postings are virtually indistinguishable from stormfront. Keep pretending you can’t see this

-3

u/SamhainXCII 2d ago

lmao "they're just like this fantasy character!"

3

u/Single_While6331 2d ago

Huh? A neo nazi website is a fantasy character? Do explain.

20

u/Rustmutt 2d ago

The salute and the overt white supremacy wasn’t enough for you?

-8

u/TaisonPunch2 2d ago

Leftists pretending to not understand something yet again.

8

u/Rustmutt 2d ago

Yeah why should I believe my lying eyes

-5

u/SamhainXCII 2d ago

Oh god yeah, the salute and the overt white supremacy. lmao.

1

u/TheRealBejeezus 2d ago

Would it benefit you if that word meant less? Why?

1

u/SamhainXCII 2d ago

It was sarcasm. I dont think you'd be able to wrap your tiny little mind around something like that. It does mean less by now, by alot. Its getting worse.

1

u/TheRealBejeezus 2d ago

I dont think you'd be able to wrap your tiny little mind around something like that. It does mean less by now, by alot. Its getting worse.

Hey, at least my tiny little mind can spell "it's" and "a lot".

1

u/trashmagicwoman 2d ago

Gave you an upvote on that one. People have used it with such less care it’s just a version of crying wolf for lazy minded people

5

u/SamhainXCII 2d ago

"Everyone i dont like is a nazi and a pedo!" Its just watering down the actual meaning and becomes just another word. I wonder what these people call actual neo nazis they come across since everyone is a nazi.

-18

u/FMCritic 3d ago

You know words have meaning, right?

7

u/Single_While6331 2d ago

Yeah he used them correctly

-2

u/FMCritic 2d ago

How so?

2

u/Single_While6331 2d ago

They accurately reflect reality.

O algo

9

u/cinnaminimoon 2d ago

For future reference guys, this phrase is a racist dog whistle from teenage losers who have nothing better to do than spread bigotry. When you see this, make sure to downvote!

11

u/astroturf-supreme 3d ago

One thing that's interesting to me is that you could find many accounts that just talk about one race multiple times a day, every single day... for my sanity , I just hope they're bots

15

u/Mariss716 3d ago

Those of us who were not comfortable with racism left when Musk bought it. He immediately let the worst back on

4

u/Waste_North_6537 2d ago

Same with pdfs too both are everywhere on x/twitter.

4

u/Any-Safety8261 2d ago

Everyone on that app is way too comfortable being all kinds of disgusting. I’ve seen people openly admit to being child predators.

4

u/Trina7982 2d ago

Anonymity

Also X rewards racist posts with views and interactions, it's a terrible platform.

6

u/FIicker7 2d ago

Trump and Elon.... Make a space safe for racism, don't be surprised when there is rampant racism.

3

u/Floor-notlava 3d ago

I left X pretty soon after Musk took over Twitter and changed the name, purely because of the sudden far-right shift.

Saying that, have you read any comment on here discussing anything to do with a Muslim allegation in the UK? r/ukpolitics and r/uknews are becoming cesspools.

3

u/corneliuSTalmidge 2d ago

Musk. Musk believes that leaving the doors wide open with nearly no accountability equals "truth".

It's unleashed unbridled hate narrative and very questionable sources; humans vs bots vs sham accounts; I don't even believe half the crap on twitter is even from humans and when it is, that it's not some hate-filled keyboard-jockey in his jockeys.

5

u/perpetual_stew 3d ago

The few times I drop in now, the racism in my feed has been completely drowned out by the misogyny

1

u/TheHistoryVoyagerPod 20h ago

My little theory about that is there are a lot of pre driving teenagers on the site

2

u/himynameisjared22 2d ago

Look who bought the app and is racist …..

2

u/Papa-Cinq 2d ago

I think that your answer is the same as the answer to, why does everyone generalize and make everything either black or white on Reddit when the world isn’t that simple?

5

u/GoldBlueberryy 3d ago

They’re racist here too, which is why you’re getting downvoted.

3

u/__breadstick__ 3d ago

Because they know they can hide behind a twitter profile and not see irl consequences. People got way too comfortable being anonymous

3

u/Comfortable-Mouse409 2d ago

Racism is bad but reffering to "you learn it in history class" is hilarious.

3

u/reeksfamous 2d ago

Delete Twitter

3

u/TFFPrisoner 2d ago

As we say in German, the fish rots from the head. In this case, the head of Twitter thinks being racist with no repercussions is essential to society (before anyone argues with me: He's said this multiple times, always with a very thin veil of plausible deniability). The site reflects that.

1

u/Affectionate_Use_164 2d ago

It's called Free Speech, good to have couple of platforms that aren't total left echo chambers.

Your opinion on what is "good" and what is "bad" is only your opinion, it isn't as universal as you think.

I lived for many years in 3 different countries, people aren't all the same, some I like, some I don't, the rest is neutral. If I don't like people from some country - I don't go there, everybody happy, but in last 10 years there was huge influx of immigrants from few places, that many people won't like after exposure.

Just how it is.

6

u/shadowstripes 2d ago

It's called Free Speech

X actively restricts several categories of speech that are otherwise legal under the First Amendment, like hate speech, harassment, and misinformation.

3

u/Affectionate_Use_164 2d ago

I noticed, still not that restricted as Reddit.

3

u/HeavyHighway6433 2d ago

Im glad you are associating racism to right wing political ideology. Usually it's the copout of  "wHy ArE yOu MaKiNg It AbOuT rAcE".

0

u/TFFPrisoner 2d ago

Try using the word "cis" on the site and you'll see how much he cares about free speech

0

u/Affectionate_Use_164 2d ago

Many uses it freely, many with all that trans stuff there.

But if crowd of people come and disagree in comments that there is no such thing, it is their free speech.

On Reddit you gave power to select few and they are constantly power tripping, banning everybody who not aligned enough with their political view, community rules written for the same reason. Can't even disagree here often, often not even present an argument or ask "wrong" question.

But it is good for you, you need a bubble when nobody can disagree with you, to continue living in imaginary world.

2

u/TFFPrisoner 2d ago

Maybe it has changed but Musk definitely set it so that if you used the word, your post would be hidden for being offensive and couldn't be liked or reposted.

1

u/Affectionate_Use_164 2d ago

Didn't see that, only if something can considered violent speech or whatever, usually only if enough people report the post.

Moderation there isn't perfect either, mob from 1 specific country coordinate in TG to complain about posts and take it down.

-4

u/BookerDewittAD 2d ago

6 yr account 52 karma checks out

1

u/Affectionate_Use_164 2d ago

I don't use Reddit so often, exactly because it's approach to free speech.

Your karma means nothing to me, why would I care about some social score.

-1

u/BookerDewittAD 2d ago

And yet here you here. Using reddit. You can't make this stuff up lol.

1

u/User2009002 3d ago

Western people thinkty are the center of the universe because they are just plain dumb and uncultured.

Most racist people don't know they are racist. They are just being themselves.

4

u/FMCritic 3d ago

Sorry, was your comment parody, or were you being serious?

0

u/User2009002 2d ago

Totally serious and I'm a Western person

1

u/FMCritic 2d ago

Dude. You just made a sweeping, contemptuous and highly despicable generalization about Western people, then explained that prejudiced people often don't recognize their own prejudice... have you considered that you might be illustrating your own point?

2

u/Depressed_Weirdo_ 3d ago

Those are actually just bot accounts or interaction-farming accounts looking for easy interactions to monetize; honestly, social media and, above all, interaction should never be monetizable, as Twitter had a huge downgrade in content because of that, and a lot of other stuff. Lol

2

u/americanonowendy 3d ago

Beside racism, I also see a lot of people keep on spreading hate and bad comment especially between their favorite with other artists

2

u/MangoesAllDay 2d ago

Bot farms from Russia and China.

Have seen who owns Twitter?

2

u/tristand666 2d ago

Nazi at the helm, it's no surprise.

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

I feel this is the combined effects 2 factors.

(a) the platform has lots of bots that produce hateful replies/posts to drive engagements (highly emotional posts);

(b) the algorithm favors high engagement content (the default "For You" feed is very different from "Following Feed in time order".

I decided to make a new, open-source, free mobile client for Twitter. To tackle information pollution. It does affect all of us, when our news feed contain an algorithmic mix of important news, ragebaits and half-truths from people we don't follow.

Launched it last week, details are here.. https://evergreen-labs.org/blog/introducing-robin

iOS: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/robin-non-algorithmic-x/id6817063233

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.evergreenlabs.robin

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

The very easy solution is not to follow racists on Twitter.

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

I think Twitter allows many types of Racism towards a breadth of people, sties like Reddit and other sites allows racism at certain targeted demographics.

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

The discourse of twitter over the last 10 years has just shown that the left and right in the extreme act exactly alike when one has control over the speech within it. Both sides refuse to call out and condemn their own nut jobs

1

u/Fair-Loan-4339 2d ago

"It’s a basic thing you learn in history class, Racism is bad" this might be the most reddit comment a comment has ever been

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

It’s so weird.

I hope it’s bots just trying to piss us off and make us all fight with one another.

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

Because they won’t get hit lol

1

u/Grayowl2 2d ago

Same thing with reddit but the inverse is anyone with a real opinion gets banned

1

u/jetsetter883 2d ago

Lol okay

1

u/LxverboyLance 2d ago

they're comfortable because they're behind a screen and they're allowed to be racist. It sucks and it's despicable but I take comfort in knowing that not everyone is like that in this world 😔

1

u/renakou 2d ago

Well….I’m just gonna motion towards the massive shift in American culture both online and offline since 2015.

1

u/atypicalgamergirl 2d ago

It is a slurry of com members, leftover 4ch'ers, paid accelerationists, govt social media agitators (with some com crossover), and so forth. If you aren't part of the rage-sewer churn then you are invisible, which is why it seems like a troglolith platform.

1

u/cragamere 2d ago

Twitter is just a cod lobby. It's mostly people joking around. Some actual racism. And a lot of that perception depends on what you yourself seem as racism.

1

u/Sesombre1 1d ago

I've seen plenty of racist posts against chinese people and white people on reddit and nobody seems to bat an eye

1

u/BroGodZilla 19h ago

to even believe in race is racism

1

u/Jujingamay 19h ago

Racist owner empowers racist users.

1

u/Myc0n1k 14h ago

Most likely because people love shock, conflict and debating people over nothing. Like this post.

1

u/TankieRedard 4h ago

There are way worse things than having a group preference.

0

u/Fell_Star7 2d ago

At least on twitter anyone can be racist to anyone, unlike this website whose admins allow blatant hate only towards certain groups of people.

Both twitter and reddit are cesspools, but at least twitter is more fair about it.

2

u/Far-Rub-6366 2d ago

On old twitter, as long as you were left leaning in your views, you could say the craziest things.

If someone said all black people should xxxx they would get tossed, but if the said the same about white males, it would be absolutely fine.

Twitter = Left leaning moderation, right leaning views would get sensored or banned.
X = The opposite of twitter.

Not defending one or the other, i think it's equally bad.

2

u/LordNikon2600 2d ago

you have data to backup your claim? Or did you just pull that out your ass.. I was around since Twitter first launched.. nothings changed..

5

u/Far-Rub-6366 2d ago

https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/7powct/ethics_project_veritas_twitter_engineers_to_ban_a/

These are hidden camera recordings of twitter employees directly saying they were using their own political views to ban or shadowban people and opinions they did not personally like.

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

Why is almost everyone on Reddit comfortable with censoring so many comments over mild disagreements?

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

Because a racist owns it duh

1

u/DeadSmellingFlower 2d ago

Call out is just making racist people more racist. It’s even creating more racists. SMH

1

u/MainelyGarry 2d ago

Keyboard warriors and bots

0

u/IndependentQuiet 2d ago

Why is everyone so comfortable calling everything racist? That word has zero meaning. Just like nazi. When weak minds over use words they lose all meaning. Most people are not so weak that words bother them either.

0

u/FMCritic 3d ago

What do people say on Twitter that you find racist, for example?

2

u/TFFPrisoner 2d ago

Black pilots are responsible for airplane mishaps, according to Elon.

-1

u/FMCritic 2d ago

Did he say it literally? Wasn't he criticizing DEI...?

0

u/Dull-Status-726 2d ago

You don't even know what racism is to even see it. Its a Twitter post. Unless they are out right saying 'I hate the (insert race or even culture)

0

u/wizzyone 2d ago

Why people talk about "racism" when you hate even your neighbours? It's hypocrisy. People aren't racist, they just hate each other, same as animals, even cats hate each other, cats are racists?

Rules of course are needed in a society, but when they are exaggerated like on Reddit they never work.

-5

u/guccimaneslawyer 3d ago

Stop taking the internet so seriously.

0

u/lbibackup 2d ago

I bet you do not know, or have not even seen posts from most of the people on twitter.

-1

u/mars_rovinator 2d ago

The real answer is really straightforward:

Nobody likes being colonized by a bunch of people who are nothing like them and only want access to their resources.

White people don't like being colonized any more than non-white people liked it.

So now everyone whose homelands have been subject to colonization by the postwar GDP empire finally has license to speak up about it and say "hey, my people aren't worthless, and our homeland is our inheritance, and we need our homeland so we can continue to survive."

This isn't racism, because nativism isn't racism.

Even white people have homelands, and all people, including white people, have a right to a homeland. The world has no right to the white race, just as the white race has no right to the rest of the world.

That's why.

I am a nativist. I am not a racist. I don't believe my race is superior; I don't believe other races are inferior.

I merely believe what is very obvious about our material reality: we aren't all the same on the inside, where it counts, and the best way to prevent constant interethnic conflict is by allowing every ethnic group its own secure, sovereign homeland, in which it may live unmolested by others.

You've been taught to believe it's a divine imperative for non-whites to decolonize, but it's also a divine imperative for whites to stand back and allow colonization as our cosmic punishment for our past imperial crimes.

It's time to learn something new: all people have the right to exist, and all nations have the right to secure homelands - even white people and white nations, because if we're the only race NOT allowed the right to self-determination. we are going to crack, we are going to collectivize, and we're going to end up brutalizing everyone else to send the message we are, in fact, real, and we do, in fact, have the right to a secure existence on our own terms - just like everyone else.

1

u/MichiganCraigslister 2d ago

From what you’ve said at least, I don’t think you’re racist or malicious. Can I ask what country are you from?

-1

u/batessl 2d ago

Well, when everything people said that didn’t tow the Dem/lib/left line became “racist” many people just said fuck it, they’re being called racist no matter what they say.

0

u/Hungry-Ad3140 2d ago

It’s just what russian bots do.

Attempting to sow division

0

u/LimpAd4924 2d ago

I’m convinced there’s a lot of fake accounts and/or bots and Musk has helped normalize making it into a different shitty world just filled with disinformation

0

u/Arxhart_671 2d ago

Be serious.

0

u/BlutoS7 2d ago

Im going to have to get on twitter now apparently.

0

u/delabay 2d ago

You need to whip your timeline into shape.

It seems pervasive because you are responding to it, so it serves you more.

Hit the "..." And pick not relevant and or see less from this individual. This goes a long way.

0

u/oskaremil 2d ago

Because it is a nazi bar.

0

u/Glum_Caterpillar_345 2d ago

A bunch of edge lords and far-right people love to nest in Twitter. They existed before Musk, but now that he bought it, they have more free range and know they wont suffer any consequences.

0

u/Ok_Gur2962 2d ago

I’m t has to be ur feed bcuz it sends you what you talk about the most… so if you stop talking about you’ll see that language fades away.

-4

u/Circle_Dot 3d ago

I only ever see antisemitism on X. I honestly don’t think I’ve seen any racist posts and maybe a handful of racist comments in the past 10 years. Not that any of it is cool, It must be the algorithm reflecting what you engage in. My feed is primarily EPL football, UFo/UAPs, tech/ai, and some celebs. I’m not engaging with politics, social issues, or really diving through comments deep in a thread. Just start blocking the users you see that engage in that shit.

-1

u/scrummnums 2d ago

They’re not. It’s just that most of the people who are not comfortable are not on Twitter. It’s like asking why are most people in bars drinking alcohol

-2

u/MurphsLaww 2d ago

What’s a twitter?

2

u/OskieWoskie24 2d ago

The one thing we're more than happy to dead-name.

2

u/trashmagicwoman 2d ago

That’s actually an interesting point. X doesn’t ban users for deadnaming it does it?

-2

u/LuckyMeasurement2380 2d ago

I’ve never seen this much homosexuality in my life. Why the hell are people just being gay and other people don’t call them out on it? It’s a basic thing you learn in history class, gay is bad, and having the gay mindset makes you a bad person. I genuinely never seen this much homosexuality like it’s a daily occurrence. If anyone on Twitter were to be like this in real life, nobody would like them.

Like gay people exist in real life, but everyone hates them, people on twitter get to be gay and people agree and whenever someone disagrees, they get called a homophobe. It’s making me wonder if these people are bots because no one could ever be this gay without thinking of the consequences.

Do you know what people would call you if you said this? "Gay"

You're just a closeted racist. You think that your flavor of racism isn't actually racism. It's not hate if they "deserve it", right?

1

u/Up_Jumped_daBoogie 5h ago

Easy, behind the keyboard you are Superman, invulnerable. You can say the worst shit ever and there are no repercussions. No one is going to reach through your monitor and strangle you, even though they should.

0

u/Gokuzawa 13h ago

this they are so bold being racist there it is insane soon as you see anything about race positivity or some type of dark history the racist come out in drones in the comment section having a huge gathering
