Rod Serling biography updates

We're one month out from the October 13 release of my Rod Serling biography, Serling: A Journey Into The Twilight Zone with TV's First Visionary, which I wrote about here: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwilightZone/comments/1stuml6/i_wrote_a_book_about_rod_serling_and_the_twilight/

You can preorder the book here: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/alan-sepinwall/serling/9781538773888/ And if you preorder, you can get a free bonus essay about my favorite Twilight Zone episode: https://hachettebookgroup.formstack.com/forms/serling

I have a lot of interviews and reviews and other stuff coming up. Rather than flood the subreddit with post after post, I'm going to put links to all of that stuff in here, updating daily. I'm happy to keep answering questions about it, and I'll keep participating in other people's threads, too.

Reviews are starting to roll in. Publishers Weekly gave it a starred review: https://www.publishersweekly.com/9781538773888 Kirkus Reviews had high praise, too: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/alan-sepinwall/serling-2/

Every day between now and October 13th, I’ll be doing a video countdown of the 31 best episodes of the show. I started out with a tricky case: “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” which on the one hand is incredible, and on the other wasn’t actually made FOR The Twilight Zone. You can see that video here: https://youtube.com/shorts/K-_1eKeZtXM?feature=share

I hope you like it. And, regardless, I'm here to answer whatever, whenever.

For The New York Times, I wrote about how Rod Serling create The Twilight Zone in part because it was the only way in the 1950 and 60s for him to comment on the subjects he cared about most, and how that's a good blueprint for contemporary media to deal with our surreal current moment: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/07/opinion/twilight-zone-tv-america.html?unlocked_article_code=1.G1E.r6FD.2Ml75fCaX-cR&smid=url-share

Was this an episode?

I saw an episode many many years ago that I swore was a TZ episode. The plot is that a man is trapped in a freeway tunnel, in bumper to bumper traffic. It takes place in real time the entire show is about him gradually breaking down and nearly going insane. And then the twist is that he’s actually in hell. I’m not finding it when looking through the OG TZ, so I thought maybe the 80s reboot but can’t find it there either. Anyone recognize the episode and know what series it might have been on?

(Ongoing) My personal ranking of EVERY Twilight Zone - I just finished Season 2

Here's the CURRENT standing and surprises:

-The "soap opera cameras" hurt the ranking of 22 and Long Distance Call because I'm really taking visuals/directing into consideration (But these are both great stories)
-Current Politics really affected my viewing of the The Obsolete Man and Eye of the Beholder.
-I love Dust and Nick of Time more than most people
-I got a lot of flack for my first season ranking of The Lonely and Third from the Sun.... I hope there aren't a lot of Mr. Dingle the Strong fans out there (Burgess Meredith is now the star of my 2nd favorite and 2nd least favorite episode.

Episode Discussion In the episode "A Nice Place to Visit", what if at this point Rocky genuinely left Hell for a moment when in the Hall of Records?

Post image

This has been something I have thought about for a while. We all know how the episode goes and everything, but what has still been bothering me is this section of the story, where Pip takes Rocky to view records on his life. With how it looked and everything, it made me wonder if this was part of Hell still, or what if for a moment, Rocky was actually taken out of Hell?

Feels like some cruel irony that Pip would do, as at this point Rocky doesn't know he is in Hell yet, so it's easy for Pip to take him out without knowing. Of course after realizing this was "the other place", he is now trapped, and can no longer go there. For a moment, Rocky was unknowingly free from his torture for a short amount of time.

Anyone else notice that Mr. Serling pronounced robots as robits? Seems odd

Do you think Ilsa ever told her adoptive parents about being trained in telepathy? Or do you think she would keep it a secret?

Disappointing.

I watch Twilight Zone two ways. I watch the ep and if I’m not familiar with lead, I research their life: The Hitch-Hiker

What’s the best thing about The Hitch-Hiker?? Save for his initial fourth wall break….hes actually the least creepy thing about the episode.

The sailor (Why is he sitting so close to Nan???). Then Nan manages to outcreep him. Finally her phone call to her mom. (shudder)

Then there’s reading up on Inger Stevens. Poor woman. How can someone do such high-profile work and end up like she did.

A lot of the TZ leads have such tragic ends (see Gig Young)

Personal Experiences Feeling a bit better on sharing this.

My grandfather passed away just over a month ago. He was a collector of so much Sci-fi and memorabilia (mainly Star Trek). I remember he was gifted this DVD box set of the entire series one year for his bday forever ago, and I also purchased him the DVD copy of the movie.

I remember one summer growing up, he let me borrow this set and I watched several classics and found several new to me episodes as well, and I would go back to his house and we would rewatch and talk about him growing up and all sort of things.

Needless to say, going through his belongings, this was the only item I asked for. Maybe one day soon I'll get a lazy Sunday and throw some of his favorites on.

What makes The Twilight Zone such a great show that is appealing to everybody and would it still be beloved in the modern day by younger audiences

Humor Can we talk about how "The Chaser" is the OG Obsession?

I mean the plot and message are very simular. TZ really was the blueprint for a lot of upcomming tropes, stories and horror
