Trados / Multiterm help

I'm hoping someone can help me out because I cannot for the life of me figure out what's happening. I'm trying to use Multiterm convert to make an Excel file into a usable file for a Multiterm term base.

It's supposed to convert an excel into three files: xdt, ftm and xml. I have the first two, but not the last. For some reason I always get a text file that Multiterm doesn't recognize when I try to load it in.

We had a course about it at school and it worked a singular time and now I can't figure out what the heck I'm doing wrong. It would make sense if the text file is what I need, except Multiterm wants an xml that I don't have. TT

My info might be outdated because I'm working with 2022 version. I am also assuming you just have a straightfoward bilingual, 2-column format. In Multiterm Convert there should be an option to choose MS Excel format before the conversion. Then in Multiterm itself you need to make sure the new termbase you create is set up as a 'bilngual glossary' from the predefined templates.
Edit to add: after multiterm convert I get these files: name.log, name.mtf.xml, name.xdt

every time so far ive had the same error which roughly translates to "object reference is not set to an example of an object" and i dont have the slighest clue what im doing wrong. I'm doing exactly what the 'how to' guide i have from the workshop says to do TT

If you have followed the instructions correctly and it still doesn't work, then perhaps you can try removing the ampersand from the original filename? Special characters in filenames often cause problems.

If you can’t solve the issue with MT Convert, you can try the free Glossary Converter app

I gave up on Multiterm and use Glossary Converter instead. It's wonderfully simple and so reliable.

is your text file actually an xml file? can you add .xml to the file name? do you have view file extensions turn on in windows settings?

i figured out that for some reason it was turning them into html files through microsoft edge WHICH I DONT EVEN USE, so now thats solved, so the text file is fine, the html file was meant to be the xml file. the xml file is called name.mtf though, idk

Nice detective work on the Edge thing. Before fighting the wizard further, check whether name.mtf is already what you want - newer MultiTerm versions keep the actual termbase as a .mtf file. Open MultiTerm, look at your termbase list, see if the terms are there. If they are, you are done; the xml and xdt were just ingredients. If not, rerun Convert now that extensions behave, then import the xml into the termbase definition - that import is its own step, separate from Convert.
