Reddit Meetup Reddit Toronto Monthly Meetup: Sat. Nov. 7 @ Front & Church, 7:00 p.m. start

Hey all, hope you've had a good week so far! This is going up earlier because it's my birth month haha.

Here are the details:

  • The monthly Reddit meetup is a no-cost event open to all genders. No RSVP is required. It is hosted by u/nervousTO, a woman in their early 30s, with support from a group of regular attendees. It's been running since August 2022 and has been described as wholesome.
  • Start time: 7:00 p.m. - show up whenever is convenient for you
  • End time: when the last person leaves or the place closes @ 2:00 a.m.
  • Location: Duke's Refresher St. Lawrence, 73 Front Street East
  • Where do I go: upstairs, using the stairs directly in front of you when you walk in. There should also be a chalkboard sign saying Reddit Meetup. Ignore the message if it says closed, I have a reservation, so it's never closed to our group.
  • Perks: We have the upstairs mostly to ourselves, although sometimes we share with another group, who will be closer to the bar. There's also a pool table, and games on the main floor (ping pong, basketball, etc.)

Note that no RSVP is required, but that by showing up, you commit to ordering something to support the venue, even if it's just a coke.

Our Q&A is here - I haven't included it with the post as it's quite detailed!

Send me a message or comment here if you have any questions or concerns about anything related to this meetup/questions that aren't answered in the Q&A.

Paid Event Slow Networking 🦥 for Introverts, Thurs. Oct. 29, 6-8pm, near Finch station

Would you still go to a networking event if only 1 or 2 people showed up? 🦥

"Only one person signed up for our event, so should we cancel it or postpone it?" - This is something that I (Jessie) know Mei and I have considered for ourselves.

Well, my answer is, you always CAN do that because you were expecting more people.

However, what if the next time you do this, or you postpone the event, and STILL only one person shows up? Then what happens?

I just feel that sometimes, when we host an event, whether it's our first time or we've been doing it for a while, if we don't have a full list of people, it feels like maybe we've failed. And we think we have to cancel it altogether.

But I just wanted to share that even if one person shows up, that's ONE person who wants to come to your event. And that's one person you get to show up for. I think that's equally important. And often, we forget that, right?

Mei and I have been hosting Slow Networking 🦥 for Introverts events for over a year now. And in the past, we've had sold-out events where only one or two people actually showed up.

You just can't predict that. Because life happens, you know? And sure, we could've cancelled or postponed. But if we've already booked the café, and someone has made the effort to come, why can't we still have the event for that person and just do things differently?

There are always ways to adapt the activities. And I also think it's a chance to REALLY get to know someone. Maybe they want to know more about how we got started, or maybe they just want to connect. There's still so much we can do!

Of course, there are things we can reflect on and improve for next time, whether that's how we're marketing the event or getting more visibility.

But I don't think having a small turnout automatically means the event was a failure. And I think this applies to people ATTENDING events, too.

Sometimes we see that only a few people are going, and we start wondering whether it's even worth showing up. Especially if we're already feeling anxious about going alone!

But here's something I've been thinking about.

What if that ONE person turns out to be the best connection you've made all year? You wouldn't know unless you showed up, right?

And I think sometimes we forget that you don't necessarily need a room full of people to have a meaningful conversation.

In fact, when there are fewer people, you might actually get more time to get to know each other.

It's like when you get a bag of M&M's. How do you know which colours you're going to get? Can you control it and say, "Hey, I want all orange ones"? I don't even know if there are orange M&M's. 😂

Anyway, the idea is that you can't always control how things turn out. But you CAN decide what you do with what's in front of you.

And for Mei and me, that means continuing to show up for the people who show up for us. Even if it's just one person. 💜

And if you're someone who's been thinking about attending an event but hesitating because it might be a small group, maybe this is your little encouragement to give it a try.

You never know who you'll meet or what that one conversation could turn into.

And speaking of showing up, Mei and I are hosting another Slow Networking 🦥 for Introverts event in North York this Thursday!

We keep our gatherings small and guided, so you don't have to worry about figuring out who to approach or what to say. We provide conversation prompts and activities to help people get to know each other beyond just what they do for work.

We'll also have a group brainstorming session where you can bring a challenge or question and hear different perspectives from the group.

If that sounds like your kind of event, we'd love for you to join us! 💜

https://luma.com/oc471t5d

Oh, this is a paid event $25, and we have a bring a friend discount!

And I'm curious!

Would you still attend an event if you knew only one or two other people were going? Or would you rather wait for a bigger group?

Meetup - Free How Technology Supports Modern Firefighting & Emergency Services @ Civic Tech Brampton, Oct 29

What technology helps firefighters and emergency services make decisions when every second matters?

Join Civic Tech Brampton for a discussion with Tina Hickey, Coordinator, Fire/Life Safety Education with Brampton Fire & Emergency Services, exploring how technology supports modern firefighting, emergency response, communication, planning, and public safety. Firefighting today involves much more than hoses and fire trucks. Emergency services depend on communication systems, data, dispatch, monitoring tools, mapping, coordination, and other technologies to help crews respond quickly and safely.

This session will give students, technologists, and community members a chance to learn more about the systems and tools that support emergency services behind the scenes.

Why show up?

  • Learn: Discover how technology supports firefighters and emergency responders during real incidents.
  • Understand: Learn how information is shared and coordinated when emergency crews need to make fast decisions.
  • Discuss: Ask questions about communication, planning, fire prevention, emergency response, and how technology is changing public safety.
  • Explore Civic Tech: Think about how data, software, communications, sensors, mapping, and other technologies can help improve emergency services and community resilience.
  • Connect: Meet students, technologists, public-sector professionals, and community members interested in technology and civic infrastructure.

New to Civic Tech? You are absolutely welcome. No technical background is required. This event is open to anyone interested in public safety, emergency services, technology, or how cities respond when things go wrong.

📅 Date: Thursday, October 29, 2026
🕕 Time: 6:00 PM–9:00 PM
📍 Location: SCEI Center, 8 Queen Street East, Brampton
🎙️ Guest Speaker: Tina Hickey, Coordinator, Fire/Life Safety Education
🚒 Organization: Brampton Fire & Emergency Services

Meetup - Free [Free Meetup] Heading east this Sunday! Coffee & Scarborough Bluffs walk (Nov 1 @ 10:30 AM)

Hey everyone!

After spending a lot of time exploring midtown and west-end trails, we’re finally heading east this weekend! If you’re looking to get outside, enjoy the fresh lake air, and meet some great local folks, come join us this Sunday, November 1st at 10:30 AM.

Most people come solo, so whether you’re new to the city or just want an easy excuse to spend a Sunday morning outside, you’ll be in good company.

The Plan

  • Meetup Spot: Bali Coffee Shop (2209 Kingston Rd)
  • Time: 10:30 AM (we'll grab drinks, chat for a bit, then head out together)
  • Trail: Walking down to Scarborough Bluffs Park
  • Vibe & Distance: A relaxed, social ~5 km walk (about 1.5 to 2 hours). No heavy hiking boots needed—standard sneakers or walking shoes work great.

Quick Request: BYO Reusable Mug / Thermos

We love supporting independent neighborhood spots, and we also try to keep things green by cutting down on single-use takeout cups. If you have a travel mug or thermos, bring it along! The café has even lined up a special perk for our group at the counter.

RSVP & Details

The walk is completely free. You can RSVP on our Luma page so we have a rough headcount:
https://luma.com/pwclza66

We also coordinate live location pins and updates in our group chat on the morning of the walk via the Luma link..

Drop a comment or DM me if you have any questions. Hope to see some of you out east on Sunday!

A perfect fall Sunday (with links). Weekly post is out, check it out. Here are today's picks:

Diwali Festival of Lights
Nathan Phillips Square | 12p-10p

Canada's largest Diwali celebration takes over Nathan Phillips Square with performances, cultural programming, and fireworks after dark. It's a free public event, so expect a crowd — which is really the whole point.

Pedestrian Sunday
Kensington Market | 12p-7p

The last Pedestrian Sunday of the season. The streets close to cars, the vendors set up, and Kensington does what it does best.

Catrinas Festival Canada
College Park | 11a-8p

Great food, local artisans, live music, and beautifully constructed altars, including one that is quite poignant in commemoration of memory and justice, honouring those who died of femicide, children, activists and journalists who killed.

Desfile de Catrincitos 2p | Children's parade celebrating Día de Muertos.
add to calendar

The Good Mourning Festival
Evergreen Brick Works | 10a-3p

Today's programming at Brick Works is centred on Día de los Muertos. Live performances by The Mexican's Folk Ballett, sugar skull decorating, face painting, an artisan market, and ofrendas.

Torontohenge
Multiple Locations | 5:45p-6:30p

The sunset is expected to line up cleanly with the city's east-west grid, sending that low golden light straight down the canyon between the buildings The peak is around 6:18p. King, Wellington, Adelaide, Richmond, and Bloor near Yonge are all good spots. You're going to have company, that makes standing in the middle of the street easier, but also makes it feel a little less unique.

**Cemetery Scavenger Hunt **
Park Lawn Cemetery | 2:30p

TalkDeath drops clues at 2:30p and you've got one hour to move through the cemetery, photographing as many headstones as you can based on symbolism, names, and dates. Submit your finds online when the time's up. BIPOC Death & Grief Talk will be on site, and Park Lawn is an official partner, so you're not just wandering around without consent.

Annex Unplugged
Tranzac | 7:30p-9:30p

Toronto's weekly Nashville-style writers' round, where the format puts the songs and the people who wrote them front and centre. This week's lineup pulls from Toronto, Montreal, and Nashville.]

Toronto Islands Photowalk
Toronto Islands | 2p-5p

Hart House Camera Club heads to the islands for an afternoon photowalk through the fall colour. Spots are limited, and you'll need to sort your own ferry ticket.

Riverside Halloween Fest
Joel Weeks Park | 11a-3p

Joel Weeks Park does Halloween a week early and costumes encouraged. There will be pumpkins to decorate, face painting, DJ, and treats. A good neighbourhood option if you've got kids who need to burn off some pre-trick-or-treat energy.

OXI Day Parade
Danforth Avenue (Euston Ave To Broadview Avenue) | 1:30p-4p

The day commemorates Greece's refusal to capitulate to Axis forces in 1940. A wreath-laying ceremony follows at 3p at Alexander the Great Parkette, at the corner of Danforth and Logan.

Presenting this special workshop will be members of the Kirtan Culture Initiative who have been sharing kirtan in various capacities throughout Toronto for close to 20 years. We hope to see you there!
