Our Longstanding “No Politics” Rule remains unchanged

Read our rules. We have had a longstanding “No Religion, No Politics” rule here at r/tools.

The mods aren’t stupid. We also don’t like getting buckets of reports in the inbox.

If someone posts/comments with politics, resist the urge to reply and argue. Just report, downvote (if that’s your jam) and move on with life.

A small flag, sticker, etc that appears in a photo will generally be allowed (so long as it doesn’t violate other rules and doesn’t draw a bunch of reports) but a bunch of people in the comments saying “Hell Yeah, a fellow [INSERT PARTY] Supporter!” is gonna get the post pulled. Political content that is clearly the motivation for the post will get the post pulled.

First time it’s a short ban, second time it’s permanent. And as we’ve discussed before, the mod team doesn’t go looking for posts, we’re not lifeguards, we respond to the reports we receive.

Let's talk about the report button.

"No advertising or promoting tools, brands, 25000 woodworking plans, your YouTube channel, etc."

Somebody is reporting things constantly for breaking rule 4, and you're batting zero for it being right.

These are some examples of posts that have been reported over the last day. None of the are breaking any rules, please stop reporting things like this. The reports are only mucking up the moderator inbox and are being kicked up the Reddit chain to the admins as abusing the report button.

Unless you see a post that boils down to "hey guys, this is XXX from YYY, come check out our suspicious sale at toolname.malware.com" leave the report button alone. Same goes for the people who report literally every YouTube link ever posted. If someone's only interaction with r/tools is them spamming their YouTube channel that's a problem; a relevant and organic video isn't.

If someone thinks the above links are spam, please tell us why. Rule changes aren't unheard of and if it's what the people want I'm fine with it. I'm just not seeing any advertisement in the posts.

Other than that you guys are great. Keep up the good work.

I'm completely aware that this is a useless post for 99.99% of our users. If anyone has questions or comments about the sub feel free to chit chat here and I'll try my best to answer things if you want; or just ignore me completely, I'm good with either.

I work with a lot of through-bolts at my job on brackets that are nearly impossible to fit my hand in to start the nut. This thing has saved me so much time and frustration. Yes, I know certain types of tape work too. I've done that plenty of times. This is better, and worth it for such short money.

Do you even use your tools!

Why are they so clean! I get that comment all the time, so here is the answer:

Yes, I use them, not professionally. I get don’t make a big mess, I keep my hands and workspace clean. I wipe my tools off with crocodile cloth, and put them back into their nice organized foam trays.

I changed oil and filters on 2 diesels today as well as fuel filters, tire rotations, and greased the chassis. I also welded some sheet metal.

Most of what I work on is newer, I move at a 3-beer per oil change pace, and could not make money at it unless I went much faster.

Anyone remember these? I just found them in my father’s tool cabinet, along with a SnakeLight. 😂

Hello all, new to this sub but have a question for the group. I've been offered the chance to buy a retiring auto mechanics entire tool box. Pictured is the box in question and its contents. There is more in the smaller cabinet but I'm not sure what. The black cabinet is also included but is empty. Initial sale price is $7500. Is that a fair deal or not worth it?

Old Sears jig or scroll saw (??) I'm not a wood worker. This thing have any value? It runs. No blades. Thinking about scrapping it.

Or bootleg? I found them in an attic and they work okay, but I don't have enough experience to know for sure.

Unfortunately, I missed it, all that was left when i got there was this.

I don't even need it, but that demo saw was calling my name.

NTD: Added a tc001max thermal camera to the workbench

Post image
3 Upvotes

Like taking apart old appliances and trying to get them working again, though I've probably got more unfinished projects than finished ones at this point.

Went with this tc001max for the thermal/visible overlay. Having the component outlines in the image should make it easier to tell which part is getting hot when everything's packed together on a board.

Haven't tried it on a repair yet, but I've got a few old boards to start with, including some I put aside a while ago. Looking forward to spending some time at the bench this weekend.

I’m a tech guy that feels sick throwing away empty compressed air cans.

I clean three desktop towers every few months and always end up with several empty compressed-air cans afterward. A rechargeable electric duster sounds less wasteful when it is used regularly, but it also has a battery and electronics that will eventually need proper recycling. For people who have made the switch, how long has your unit lasted and how often do you actually use it? I'm trying to work out whether the reusable option makes sense at my usage level rather than assuming it is automatically better.

Home Depot deals?

• Upvotes

Anybody know what Home Depot will be discounting next month? I find every year I can usually stock up on some stuff there in November like saw blades, gloves, etc for work.

Dumore 16-021 Sensitive drill press model 8226

I inherited this tool from my father, who got it maybe 50 years ago or more, though I'm not really sure. I have a drill press for my woodworking and have no need for this one, which he used for jewelry making. I'm not on Facebook but I'm told that might be a place to try to sell it. Anybody have any advice about selling this sort of thing, or how much to ask? (I'm in the SF Bay area if that matters.) Or is there some other sub where it might be more sensible to post this? Thanks for your time.

I’ve opened it up and given it a good clean which hasn’t helped.
