First off, I want to apologize if this type of post isn’t allowed because while I think it relates to Taylor, it is not entirely about her. Before becoming a Swiftie, I was super into 5SOS and they quickly became my favorite band. While listening to Taylor, I realized a couple of songs had very similar themes that both artists have explored. This isn’t a new revelation or anything, many artists cover similar topics all the time, but there were certain lyrics that stood out to me to almost be a conversation between the two artists.
I just want to add, that I know they are not actual response songs to each other, it was just something I noticed how similar these songs could be to each other. I also want to say that I am not dissecting muses or that Taylor and 5SOS have some secret connection, just noticing similar themes and lyrics used. So with that said let’s get into the analysis.
High Infidelity vs. Bad Omens
So this is probably the most explicit connection I have been able to make between the two songs. In High Infidelity Taylor sings to her lover that she is over the relationship and has been with somebody new. She expresses that they shouldn’t be surprised because the relationship has slowly been dying for some time now, at least from her perspective. Throughout the song she continually mentions that the two lovers have been having issues for quite some time and she finally found a way out by feeling enamoured with a new person.
One of the lyrics she mentions that shows the relationship has been failing for a while is, “good husband, bad omen, dragged my feet right down the aisle”. To me this shows that even at a wedding, a time that is supposed to inspire love, joy, and togetherness, is filled with distraught and even some contempt. While the lover is a “good husband” who may provide for Taylor in all the acceptable ways society deems appropriate, the husband does not actually care deeply about her or know how she truly feels. If he did, her feet wouldn’t be dragged down the aisle (whether that be him literally dragging her or her begrudgingly going through with the wedding).
This lyric is also interesting to me because she specifically mentions the phrase bad omen. This is where the “response” song comes in. She mentions that the wedding and their subsequent marriage is failing because he couldn’t see the bad omen that she did not really care for him. Which becomes the main theme is 5 Seconds of Summer’s song Bad Omens.
Throughout Bad Omens, the singer laments about the failing of his relationship. That he is noticing all the cracks and he is desperately trying to hold onto it because he does not want to let his lover go, even though it is abundantly clear that the lover no longer cares for him and is seeking out someone else.
The lyrics that most interest me are from the chorus, “I died when you left that night for the thousandth time, ‘cause you love somebody else.” This line mimics a lot of what Taylor sings about in High Infidelity. It could be a direct response to the line, “do you really want to know where I was April 29th?” because of the woman leaving to be with her new beaux. But it also encaptures the entirety of what Taylor sings about in her song. The relationship is over, the woman seeks out a new lover, the previous one is surprised and hurt by learning they have been cheated on despite that this should not be new information to either member singing.
Another connection between these two songs is in the second verse of Bad Omens. The narrator sings, “I kiss you on your neck, you were staring at the ceiling, I should’ve known right there and then you were a runaway.” This mirrors what the narrator in Taylor’s song has been saying. That she was never fully invested in the relationship and was going to leave the minute someone she could truly connect with came along. That not only was she a runaway, as 5SOS puts it, but that she felt she was dragged down the aisle, as mentioned before. The two songs are repeating the same sentiment over and over again, almost as if it is a conversation where one partner cannot hear the other. They go in circles, which is another theme in Bad Omens, where they are doomed to repeat this pattern of coming together, being cheated on, and fighting to hold onto the relationship. This is evident when the Bad Omens chorus is also repeated as the bridge and when the narrator sings, “these bad omens, I look right through them.” Even though they see the bad omens, they see their partner falling in love with someone new, they are so deep in denial out of love for this individual or love of social appearances according to High Infidelity, that they are ignoring the warning signs. Which again, is evident in both songs. Taylor sings in a way of disbelief that the other person is surprised when it seems so clear that this was the inevitable end. The warning signs were present from the beginning.
Throughout the song there are different thematic parallels such as lust and regret. But these have been my main points in where I feel the true connections are clearest. My initial analysis had me analyzing four song comparisons but since this first one ended up being so much longer than I thought it would. I hope you found this interesting and would like to hear the analysis for the other three songs sometime soon. If you also listen to 5 Seconds of Summer and notice any comparisons or listen to other artists completely that you noticed had similar themes/topics with Taylor I would love to read your analysis!
