General FAQs

I've been overcharged by Opal, what do I do?

  • You need to contact Opal to request an adjustment / refund. This typically takes 24 hours.

Do Suburban trains have toilets?

  • The Suburban trains do not have toilets on them. The OSCARS ( H Set) do have them however they are locked off when operating within the Suburban Network. (Note: While some OSCARS are now part of the Suburban Sets, they haven't all had their toilets removed yet)

Where can I apply to work for Sydney Trains?

  • The I work for NSW page has regular job postings for Trainee Driver, Trainee Guard, CSA, Cleaner and more.

How do I see what train / type is running?

Why is there a Waratah going towards Newcastle?

  • Both Millenniums (M Set) and Waratahs (A/B Sets) will travel either under their own power or loco hauled up the Main North to Cardiff where they undergo heavy maintenance that cannot be completed in Sydney.

Are quiet carriages not a thing anymore? Why don't people respect them?

  • Quiet carriages on the Suburban Network are not a thing. On the intercity side they do exist however the general population don't always adhere to it. Yes, it is very frustrating, but there are worse things to be upset about.

What is happening with the K Sets ?

  • They will run October 3 - 5 as an event by TFNSW.

The platform indicators are upside down, why?

  • Occasionally they do get messed up, either through human error or software glitches.

What are some good Trainspotting locations?

  • Passenger trains: Central, Redfern, Strathfield, Lidcombe
  • Freight trains: Concord West, Homebush, Flemington, Sydenham, Rhodes

Trainee Driver/Guard/Misc FAQs

What can I do to prepare for video / panel interviews?

  • Research the STAR method online and practice in front of a mirror at home to so on the day you aren't as nervous. SPACE behaviours is another subject to look up as it is part of the Sydney Trains corporate plan.

I've applied for a role but it says talent pool, what does this mean?

  • While you may get through all the application process and pass the medical, it does not guarantee you have a position yet. It is highly recommended you not leave your previous job until you've got a start date in writing. Many people are in the talent pool and you can be waiting weeks, months or even a year for a position to become available.

What does the Vieple (Video Interview) contain?

  • The Vieple Video interview usually contains a set of different questions, each giving 30 second prep and 60 seconds to record a response.
  • No, you cannot redo these. It is important you practice ahead of time.
  • No, the questions aren't the same for each interview.

What can I do to help prepare for interviews / general advice for any role?

  • Focus around safety, communication, people skills, problem solving and dealing with failure (resolution). Dress professionally (smart/office wear) for your interviews as well as your video portions.

What does the typical schedule for a Trainee Driver look like?

  • Day Zero (Your first day): Orientation at Petersham and general introductions / get to know you.
  • Month 1 to 2 (approx): Typically 0800 to 1600 at Petersham in a classroom environment. Will consist of theory, practical and simulator use. Exams are both written and practical.
  • Month 3 to 13 (approx): Assigned with a Driver Trainer each fortnight, rotating to a different trainer every fortnight. You work from their Depot and shift times. This means you are required to travel across the network to commence work. (Note: A list of the Depots is listed below) After you have completed each Sector, you will be required to complete both written and practical exams.
  • Final stage: Once you have finished all 3 Sectors and passed all exams, you will need to pass a final practical assessment. This is over a 2 day period, it will include everything you've learned throughout training. You MUST pass this exam in order to become a Qualified Driver.

What happens once you become a Qualified Driver / Guard?

  • After taking up, you will be placed at Central Depot and allocated a Line Number. Each fortnight you will rotate through the various lines and work the associated times and days of that line. This is known as a "Swinger". (Note: See below for more information about Rostering/Lines)

What are the medical requirements for Train Crew?

  • You need to be able to pass a CAT 1 Medical for Driver or a CAT 2 Medical for Guard, there is information online for what this involves. Sleep apnea is now a more common talking point as the national guidelines for rail safety work has been updated.

How long do you typically wait after completing the medical?

  • This can takes days or weeks depending on how busy things are. It is also done through a 3rd party which can impact time.

Does having pre-planned holidays affect training/talent pool?

  • You will need to disclose any holidays you've got pre-planned before starting training. This may affect your start date. Discuss this with your hiring coordinator.

What are the different Unions and are they worth joining?

  • RTBU – Operational Rail/Tram/Bus, focus on pay/safety/conditions
  • ETU – Electricians/Signallers, Training/Support
  • PSA – Admin/Back-office roles, pay/conditions
  • PA – Engineers/Designers/Surveyors, professional advocacy
  • Most people join (90–95%), typically from Day Zero at Petersham.
  • Benefits: support person, legal representation, picnic day, workplace allowances, employee travel card (specific to RTBU).

Typically Day Zero at Petersham there will be an info session with a union delegate where you can ask questions and join if you desire so.

Qualified Driver/Guard FAQs

What are the Sectors / Depots of the Suburban Network?

  • The Suburban Network is divided up into 3 Sectors. There are 13 Train Crew Depots spread across the Network. See below;
Sector Area Depots
Sector 1 Illawarra, Eastern Suburbs Mortdale, Cronulla, Waterfall
Sector 2 City, Inner West, SouthWest Auburn, Flemington, Leppington, Campbelltown
Sector 3 North & West North Sydney, Hornsby, Blacktown, Richmond, Penrith
All Sectors Suburban Network Central

What are the penalty rates / loading for working specific times / days?

Day Loading O/T (1st 2nd) Shift O/T (3rd 4th Shift)
Monday to Friday 100% +50% +100%
Saturday 150% +50% +50%
Sunday 200% +50% +50%
Shift Work Loading When
Early Morning Shift Commences at or between 0400 and 0530
Afternoon Shift Commences after 1000 and concludes after 1800
Night Shift Commences at or between 1800 and 0359

How does rostering work once I'm qualified?

  • After you have taken up, you will be based at Central Depot as a Swinger. You are allocated a line and then work the times of that line as per the Master Roster. Each fortnight you rotate through each line and follow the times / workings of said line. Each line for a swinger has a time on the Master Roster, eg 1000 SBY, however when receiving your actual fortnightly roster, this can swing +/- 2 hours. So you could be starting 0814 one day and 1157 the next.

Can I swap lines / shifts?

  • Yes, you can; however, this is all coordinated privately between crew then pending approval by Rosters at Burwood.

How do transfer work?

  • Transfers within the Suburban & Intercity Depots are all based off of Seniority. This mean those who have been on the job longer have the higher priority when applying for depot transfers. Each year you can apply for one or more depots. Based off of how many open positions at any given time in the year, they work down the list of those who have their name down for it and offer them the position. Some depots, like Waterfall and Blacktown, have extremely long waiting times due to their popularity and limited positions. (Note: There is no fixed time period, it all fluxuates based on positions available)

Shouldn’t the BMT stop at St Marys?

Now that the airport is open shouldn’t the BMT stop at St Marys just like how the SCO stops at Wolli Creek? Would make it easier for people coming from The Blue Mountains to get to the airport and remove the need to switch trains at Penrith with luggage

can someone ELI5 about two things:

  1. presumably it’s either physically impossible or impractical or not enough demand to have a line that goes as marked in the pic above, right? otherwise I just wonder why they never made it Liverpool to Bankstown

  2. if a big part of converting the old T3 to metro was taking the T3 off the city circle, why do the new T3 services still seem to run there? presumably it’s at a much reduced frequency or something?

these are probably dumb questions lol I’ve just been wondering

When will the Elizabeth St ("Eastern Stairs") Exit reopen at Central?

Was the main exit I use at Central annoyingly, its been shut for like a month or two. When will it reopen? I can't find any reference to it online.

They're the stairs from the north end of the T4 concourse, it doesn't have an exit number.

Am I slow or this is a new addition - St Marys now have the aeroplane sign on the indicator board (and platform concourse)

Bike racks on buses

Post image
79 Upvotes

What do we think on bike racks on buses? Especially the longer distance routes such as the M7 express bus, northern beach express buses, B1 etc.

Cycling in the CBD is slowly getting better as more bike lanes and office bike parking becomes available. It would encourage more people to cycle in the city as well, reducing congestion.

Canberra has them as well as some regional Victorian routes. Why can’t we have them in Sydney?

Why do the two-way gates take longer to change direction after a missed card tap?

Say I'm inside the station, exiting through the Opal gates, using the two-way gate (wheelchair gate). The card scanner is only active on the inside half the time, when the light is orange. The other half of the time, it's active for people outside looking to enter the station. It switches every second or so.

If you just miss the orange light and scan on a red, it takes a bit longer to switch back to scanning that side. Why is that?

Edit: I mean where the reader doesn't register a full misread. No feedback from the machine except the little light to the side stays red longer than usual.

More ways to get to bankstown

Surely there should be more ways to get to bankstown metro once it opens, no way it should take 40-50 minutes to get to bankstown from liverpool or over an hour for people around leppington? There no nearby parking at bankstown as well??

Why isn’t there a notice or announcement to change the T3 back to going through bankstown?

fare cost confusion

I just got back from a trip I did to sydney and some other areas of austrailia, but one thing that confuses me is what I was charged on my credit card for using the opal network vs what is shown on the NSW transaction history for my card. I was paying in Aus $, while my home currency is USD.

I had arrived into sydney on the morning of Oct 13th, and I know transactions are usually delayed by a day before showing on my credit card statement.

My credit card statement shows Rydges Syd central ICP for $23.76 and then $8.39 on Oct 14th.

Then for Oct 15th it shows a WW METRO/300 ELIZABETH ST charge of $22.87 and $9.86.

It lastly shows a TFNSW OPAL fare of $13.40

However, on the NSW website for transactions, it shows a total of $19.16 for Oct 13th (this was a combo of bus and metro trips).

It shows $7.36 for Oct 14th (metro trips) and then

$5.61 on Oct 15th for "L" line trips.

I understand the NSW transport info website shows only the last 10 days or something, but there is a large gap ($46) between what is being reported on their site vs my credit card and I cannot figure out why. I swear I tapped on and off correctly when I was supposed to so I don't believe I should have gotten charged the "max" amount for a given day for mistakenly not tapping once.

Are there replacement buses between Chiswick and abbotsford?

According to the travel alerts page, it says a replacement bus is provided. But I could not find any record of it in the GTFS feed or travel planners or even the opal travel app

And circular quay and Barangaroo have posters that don’t say a replacement bus is provided, only 438X/N

Can someone confirm this?

Why the different scaling?

Thumbnail

At gadigal station, why do the metro signs use different scaling methods? The Bankstown one is as compact as possible and the Tallawong one is stretched to fit the entire page.

Personally I prefer the Tallawong version because it’s easier to look at from a glance, but why use different scalings in the first place?

Why T2 to Parramatta is not assigned its own T number?

Just curious, the T2 local between Parramatta and city is quite well defined. It runs quite frequently, has a pretty standardized timetable.
Why is the T2 which also goes to leppington?
Wouldn't more clear in maps etc to be assigned its own number/color, like T22 or whatever?
So city to Homebush/Parramatta local would be clearly shown as a separate service.
I know most stations/trunk line is the same as leppingtons, but I just think it would be easier.

South Coast rail line to be electrified and duplicated

Thumbnail
2st.com.au
160 Upvotes

This plan consists of an immediate investment of $621 million, with work already underway to upgrade critical infrastructure ahead of electrification and duplication work beginning. This includes:

· Renewal and upgrade of power and signalling infrastructure.

· Upgrading drainage, culverts and raising sections of track to reduce flooding impacts.

· Strengthening embankments and stabilising slopes to prevent landslips and rockfalls between Waterfall and Wollongong.

· Work to better protect critical rail infrastructure from bushfire and extreme heat conditions.

Electrify the Kiama to Bomaderry line: this will facilitate the replacement of the ageing diesel trains with new electric trains, and allow a direct connection to Central, removing the need for passengers to interchange at Kiama.

Installation of additional tracks and passing loops between Wollongong to Kiama: this section is predominantly single track which limits capacity and reliability. Additional tracks will allow increased capacity, more frequent services with regular stopping patterns.

Removing South Coast bottlenecks: detailed planning work will address key issues including flat junctions, level crossings, and station and track locations.

Installing quadruple tracks between Hurstville to Sutherland: this section currently has two tracks which are shared by passenger and freight services on the South Coast Line and the T4 Illawarra Line. Doubling capacity will separate these two lines leading to increased frequency, capacity and reliability.

Detailed planning works for electrification and duplication will commence in 2027 and confirm the final scope and cost of the upgrades, with construction expected to be complete by the mid to late 2030s.

The transport links to the WSI airport so far went pretty well

There were lots of talk about even how bad it will be get to the airport.

From my experience, it wasn’t bad at all. 30 min from Leppington station and around that time from st Mary’s.

Yesterday, thousands of people came and the transport handled it fine.
