Trying headphones with an echo effect to manage my stutter while preaching

Hello! I’m 19 years old, and I’ve struggled with stuttering my entire life. On top of that, I grew up bilingual, so I’ve never really had the chance to speak fluently in either of the languages I know.

I stutter a lot in Arabic, and I used to stutter a lot in Russian too, although it has gotten better. Until I was 14, I was a really shy kid, but then I stopped letting my stuttering define me and started living a normal life. Thank God I moved to Russia, where everyone speaks Russian, and I find Russian phonetics much easier.

When I was 17, I gave my life to Jesus, and my pastor asked me to start preaching. I was like, “Okay!” 😅 I genuinely tried preaching in small groups, but it was really hard for people to listen to me sometimes because of my stuttering.

So today, I bought some headphones to simulate an echo effect while preaching, hoping it would help reduce my stuttering. I’m also going to code my own app, and maybe I’ll add a vibration feature to help me speak in rhythm through tactile feedback.

Stutter

(First post kinda nervous)
I 27F have a speech impediment and I’m looking into if there’s any bigger online support groups? I’ve only seen “parents with children with stutters”

I’ve had a stutter ever since I could remember but it seems like I’ve gone through phases in my life where it’s hardly noticeable or it’s practically every conversation I have and it’s starting to work on my mental health.

Going on dates

I’ve had a stutter all my life but as of last year it’s been a lot worse than normal. I’ve been really insecure and I’ve been pretty much avoiding talking to people because of how awkward it makes me feel. I’ve been talking to this guy for a few days and we are meeting tomorrow evening and then we’ll watch a movie together. I haven’t mentioned my stutter to him and I’m not sure if I should. What do you think? Should I mention it or no?

Rant ahead

Just cooked to the core man, this cold dm and dating app shit wont work for me at all at any case..

Have proper height and looks and appearance and working in corporate, hitting the gym regularly and all of it,still because of my fucking stuttering I have the peak urge to approach any female but my stuttering shit pulls me up everytime.

It's not like I never tried, but everytime ends up like as if I'm asking girl for a help, and it's a turn off for a girl instantly...

I just don't know man, used to have hope ,but now am really losing it totally, living in a different city, don't have any spice in life 😔

the worst part is others think why the hell u won't approach man,it's so easy..

But it's really impossible shit for me,unless I talk in DM or if the girl is really interested in me..

from india btw

Survey Participants Needed: Experiences With Speech Therapy and Stuttering

Hello everyone,

I am a graduate student conducting a research project examining how the length and frequency of speech therapy may relate to the social and functional experiences of people with fluency disorders, specifically stuttering.

If you have experience with stuttering and have participated in speech therapy, I would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey. The survey takes approximately 10–15 minutes to complete and asks about your experiences with speech therapy and communication in everyday life.

Participation is completely voluntary, and anonymous.

Thank you for considering participation and for helping contribute to fluency disorder research.

I stutter. What would you actually want from speech technology, if anything?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone. I stutter, and I’ve been thinking a lot about how technology could (or shouldn’t) fit into our lives.

Something I keep coming back to: most of what people notice about stuttering is the audible part, but a lot of it isn’t audible at all. Blocks are just silence, and things like word avoidance, anticipating a stutter, dreading phone calls, and hiding it never show up in a recording.

So I’m curious:

Which part affects you most day to day: the speech itself, the physical tension, or the anxiety around it? Are there situations (calls, interviews, ordering food) where you wish something could make things easier? Have you tried any apps or tools? What worked, and what felt useless or even insulting? Is there anything you’d never want technology to do?

No agenda here. Just trying to understand other people’s experiences better. If you’d rather share privately, feel free to DM me.

Thanks for reading.

Did James Fishback really have a stutter as a child? If so, is his recovery one of the greatest turns of fortune of the stuttering community, especially since he is a capable orator now?
