What's your opinion on wrestlers using the argument "you've never done this so you can't criticize me"?
232
u/BryanAlvarezAMA Jul 02 '15
It's stupid.
With that said, if you've never done BJJ I don't want you telling me that Kimbo vs. Ken was fake.

It's super fucking stupid. Movie critics usually don't make movies, but they're perfectly entitled to their opinion. Why? Because that's what they do.
They know what makes something great, they've experienced it. That makes them enough of an authority to comment on the stuff.

u/TolerancEJ Jul 02 '15
Hi Bryan
What do you think would it take for WWE to get behind and give Cesaro a legitimate shot on the upper card? He's already had a number of good matches with John Cena, among others. (Please, no yodeling.)
220
u/BryanAlvarezAMA Jul 02 '15
Vince has to decide he's not boring.
47
u/Mi11ionaireman Jul 03 '15
This scares me considering I'd watch Lance Storm over Sheamus, yet he holds the MITB. Cesaro is not boring in comparison.
6
u/Corrosivecoke Jul 03 '15
i'd watch a gimmick where they had an inanimate object in the middle of the ring and pretended it was a person over Sheamus.
1
u/TheAdmiralCrunch Jul 03 '15
I wouldn't.
I'd take Cesaro over Sheamus, but I'd take Sheamus over Storm. Storm had better technical chops but Sheamus is just more interesting to watch, for me, as long as he's not in there with the wrong person.
Storm, I mean... if I don't give a shit about the lack-of-a-character I don't care how good they are in the ring.
-2
-7
Jul 03 '15
I know it's not a popular opinion on here but I actually do think Cesaro is more boring than Sheamus. For all his faults, Sheamus at least has a pretty intense presence (like a slightly worse version of Attitude Era HHH) – Cesaro always seems kind of aloof.
Like if you watch a promo like this, he's supposed to sound intense and serious, but he keeps smirking and smiling and fidgeting the whole time and it doesn't work.

u/TheHeroicOnion Jul 03 '15

u/RobertYoloMugabe2k12 Jul 02 '15
Who do you think, under the current NXT Roster will be the biggest deal this time next year and why?
104
u/Fox318 Jul 02 '15
At what point will the WWE be forced to make changes about the 3 hour raw killing public intrest in wrestling? Ratings for each raw keep on getting worse and worse and they aren't competing with WCW or the NFL right now. Even Tough Enough has resulted to a Victoria's Secret segment to try and pop ratings.
Could you see NBC/Universal/Comcast cutting the WWE deal since they could fit in another program and get more money per ad than they could with a WWE program if ratings keep on falling?
Will the WWE ever have good commentary again?
Long time F4/WO sub. Thanks for the content over the years.
139
u/BryanAlvarezAMA Jul 02 '15
Right now Raw is still doing great numbers for USA and WWE is making big money on three hours so I don't see any changes, unfortunately. But if things continue to sink, at some point everyone needs to get together and talk about whether that third hour is really worth it in the long run.
4
u/dustyfinish Jul 02 '15
Raw is still doing great numbers but is also sinking? Can you clarify?
27
Jul 02 '15
They're doing well above USA's average, hence why USA remains the #1 cable network. Which is also why Smackdown is moving to USA, because they do well above USAs avg
8
2
u/cooljayhu Jul 02 '15
They're doing great numbers for the USA Network. As in compared to the rest of USAN's programming (which is what btw? I'm Canadian so I have no idea) Raw still does excellent ratings. However when compared overall to other programming on other networks (such as Monday Night Football) or wrestling during other periods (even this time about a year ago) Raw is slumping.

How do you truly think CM Punk will do in his first UFC fight?
207
u/BryanAlvarezAMA Jul 02 '15
He's paying big money to train at a real camp with real guys. If he faces another 0-0 he SHOULD win. But he's also starting all of this VERY late, and he could get destroyed.
121
u/DoTheHarlotShake Jul 03 '15
So he might win, but he might lose?
90
4
u/parliboy Jul 03 '15
Well... yes. Alvarez picks Punk to win versus another 0-0 guy, who'll be someone who can only train part-time. But he'll be giving up physical skills simply from the deterioration of age and falling down a lot. And it is MMA, so no fight is a 100% lock.
2
2
u/BAWguy Jul 03 '15
The question was about the result of a yet-to-occur sporting event. Punk's opponent hasn't been named, nor has a date. How specific did you want him to get?
1
1
Jul 03 '15
It's up in the air: Punk is starting MMA very late in his life (he's in his mid 30s) and if he faces a young guy with little experience it will be an even fight at the very least.
1
u/Necramonium Jul 03 '15
Punk will have one advantage and that is that he knows pain and can fight through it from all the years of bumping.
1
1
u/NefariousNeezy Jul 04 '15
Depends on what kind of 0-0 that is, in the end.
Logan Stieber is also 0-0.
1
u/ChicoRamon Jul 03 '15
You know they're going to put him in there with a can, somebody 0-3 in the UFC and with a loss, would get cut by Dana.

Can someone please explain the reason behind this question? I don’t understand the connection between WWE & Conor McGregor. Thanks
40
u/badgersprite Jul 02 '15
Conor McGregor basically cuts wrestling promos and his OTT character is why he's popular. There's a good reason to think those kinds of personalities could be draws in wrestling and generate buzz.
32
u/dj_soo Jul 03 '15
It helps that he's a dynamic striker that has ko'd a bunch of people and has a pretty unique fighting style. He's also a fresh, young, and exciting fighter - things the sheamus is not.
2
2
u/GAY4DeGea Jul 02 '15
Hasn't there always been loud, obnoxious, over the top characters in both wrestling & combat sports. What makes Conor McGregor so unique?
9
u/badgersprite Jul 03 '15
He's actually being successful in attracting attention, hype and fans. By contrast, WWE hasn't made a lot of big, new, top, mainstream stars in recent memory who would attract new fans to WWE.
It's an example of the kind of personalities that appeal to wider audiences.
4
Jul 03 '15
Connor mcgregor is the biggest star out of Ireland at the moment. Guy has swagger for days, confident, cocky, arrogant. He markets himself very well and backs up, he can cut a promo and he's getting ready for a big pay day coming next week. Since sheamus is from Ireland as well....guess they thought people would see a connection and want sheamus to be like mcgregor.
1
u/GAY4DeGea Jul 03 '15
Do you not think that it's McGregor's popularity in his home country that drives this attention & hype? He's incredibly popular here & literally thousands of people travel to the states to see him fight. He essentially brings an army with him everywhere he competes so it's hard to go unnoticed.
2
Jul 03 '15
For the most part yeah but his popularity and hype was from his ability to sell himself. Guy can make you believe he's the greatest fighter in the world but ends up being a can (which he's not but just an example how well he sells a fight) in mma, if you can cut a decent promo you got people hooked doesn't really matter where you're from..people will come all over to hear some shit being talked.
1
u/dj_soo Jul 03 '15
I think it's a combination of that, his personality, and the fact that he's a young, fresh talent that's putting on exciting and dynamic fights.

u/TrimmersX7 Jul 02 '15

u/SoSaltyDoe Jul 03 '15

8
u/thekozmicpig Jul 03 '15
It's crazy how well they match up.
WCW started* with crazy goofy stuff like The Chamber of Horrors and Archnaman, TNA stated with The Johnsons and the King of Mountain match.
Suddenly WWE guys! WCW had Luger, Nash and Hall jump, TNA had Christian, Jeff Hardy and Kurt Angle.
Both promotions actually were solid (ratings and quality though in TNA just quality which stinks because they were good shows for a bit) until an overdose of Hogan and Russo sent them into death throws.
Both got rid of the Hogan and Russo and improved, but it was too late for WCW and maybe too late for TNA.
Bonus: Both let Scott Steiner cut awesome promos. I can't snark or hate on those.
Yes I know WCW was JCP. Hush. This is all after Turner bought them and they became officially became WCW.

108
u/BryanAlvarezAMA Jul 02 '15
I would be shocked if anyone was fired for leaking information to me or Dave or anyone else.
Most people leak information because they want a story out, they think something is funny or stupid or important for the world to know. It's not always negative stuff. People just focus on the negative stuff.

Hey Bryan, I have a question regarding The Empire~!
Not too long ago, The Lapsed Fan Podcast recorded some segments with Dave for their 30 Week, 30 Wrestlemania series. Their podcast is currently being released and supported by Wrestlezone, however, there seems to have been issues between the two sides recently, seemingly forcing them to release podcasts bi-weekly, rather than weekly.
As a F4/WO subscriber, I would be willing to pay 1 or 2 more dollars per month to help bring The Lapsed Fan into The Empire~! From hearing Jack Encarnacao discuss MMA events on his Sherdog podcast, I believe that Jack would make a great addition to the F4/WO team and could not only bring his great podcast, but his MMA knowledge to the site. Based on the Lapsed Fan thread on The Board, there are quite a few fans of the show that are also subscribers to your site.
So, after my long winded introduction, my question follows. Has there been any discussion about bringing The Lapsed Fan to the Observer site? If not, could you see a situation in which they could possibly be brought in?
Thanks for coming to Reddit for the AMA, and thanks for all of the hard work on the site and the audio that you provide.

u/BryanAlvarezAMA Jul 02 '15
Hasn't been any discussion of adding any other podcasts at the moment. There is a lot about the current site that needs to be fixed and things have been in the works for like a year now in various directions. I want to handle and optimize what we've got before we add more.

Hey Bryan, thanks for doing this.
I always wondered, what's the most hostile/interesting/fun experience you ever had while trying to get a scoop?
145
u/BryanAlvarezAMA Jul 02 '15
I don't recall ever having a HOSTILE experience. I do remember Austin Aries getting mad at me once because he didn't like that I said, "You had a great match." He said I should have said, "I THOUGHT you had a great match", because my original statement indicated that I was stating a FACT and not an opinion, and my opinion was not, in fact, a FACT.

Hey, Bryan. I’m a fan of WOL, but an even bigger fan of After Dark. I’d really like to hear Matt Sydal/Evan Bourne come on and talk in depth about Ayahuasca and stuff. He talked about it a little bit on Colt Cabana’s show. What do you think about that idea? I think it would be a cool crossover.
I also wanted to ask if you’ve ever had any paranormal experiences. Ever seen a ghost, experienced some kind of premonition or telepathy, seen a bigfoot, heard the sky trumpets or whatever?

I'll try to get him on.
I don't really believe in ghosts. However, when I was in Hawaii earlier this year, my wife and I were driving on this winding road and I SWEAR TO GOD I saw a phantom biker appear and disappear, and this was on a road where a biker could not, in fact, appear and disappear, and the key is MY WIFE SAW IT TOO. Craziest thing I ever saw. The way the road was set up, there was nowhere for a biker to come from or disappear to, so it blew our mind.

Hey Bryan, I immensely enjoy your rants on Wrestling Observer Live. My questions are:
-
Do you have any important tips on getting into Jiu-Jitsu? Do I need to be a gym regular before I start training?
-

Thanks!

For BJJ, unless your main goal is to be a fighter and have a short whirlwind career, find a gym that has kids, young people, 18-34s, plus 40-somethings and old people all training. Then you know it's a good atmosphere for longevity.

Hi Bryan, long time fan. Absolutely love the Bryan and Vinny Show. I've tweeted it to you in the past, but I hope to be 1/10th of the podcaster that you and Shoulders Torelli are. Seriously, you both fucking rock.
One of the staples of the Bryan and Vinny Show is the eclectic cast of characters like Granny, Lance "Grumpy Grump" Storm, Buddy Wayne, and of course, Brent Kremen. Each of them brings something new to the show with every appearance and contributes quite a lot. With such personalities, those around you and young Vinny V absolutely shine. Do you feel that associating with Brent Kremen would have given Savio Vega more credibility or was his career intended to go down like a stream of piss that was pissed straight up in the air following his loss to Mabel at King of the Ring 1995? After all, Brent is undefeated against Sycho Sid.
PS Tell Lance Storm to unblock me on Twitter. All I asked if he's ever read a book whilst driving since its two adventures at once.

hey Bryan! thanks for doing the AMA! in your eyes, do you believe that WWE will truly be better once Vince McMahon is gone (not necessarily dead just stepped away)? there's a lot of hype on here about Triple H and how he's headed in the right direction with NXT, do you think there's the potential for him to take the main roster down the same line of success that NXT is going through?
54
u/BryanAlvarezAMA Jul 02 '15
No idea until the day comes.
Vince does a lot of things wrong, I think, but he does a ton of things right. NXT is awesome, but it's NXT. The track record of NXT guys on the main roster isn't good, but who knows if that's an NXT issue, a HHH issue, a Vince issue, etc. Impossible to say until it happens.

Is it something you have all ruled out due to the cost and hassle? After being so far ahead of the game in podcasting, I strongly feel this is the one area where your company is a bit behind the times and could really could improve upon.

The new site will have a very good mobile version, an app is probably a ways down the road. There are issues involving paid podcasts, apps, Apple Store, etc. Not my department, but as usual, if it was an easy fix we'd have done it awhile ago.

When are you going to have Vampiro on After Dark for what would surely be the greatest episode in AD history?

I should work on that. I have no guest for this week yet in fact. Anyone weird who wants to come on, lemme know.

Appreciate everything you guys do over there.
Think Balor leaves Japan as the NXT champion? And do you think that Steen will be successful on the main roster as US champ (assuming he beats Cena)?

Over the years of doing Observer Radio, how many times have you had to ask Dave to replace his smoke detector battery?
